Over the next few weeks, the other boys dropped out of the project. But Freddie kept on. Some friends laughed at him, thinking it was a waste of time. However, Freddie decided to stick it out. Even in the heat of summer, he wouldn't miss one day. Whenever he saw a piece of litter along the road, he would stop to pick it up and put it into the bags. The first day of the new school year soon arrived. At the opening ceremony, the headmaster said, "The community has presented a certificate to one of our pupils in recognition of the work by him. Freddie Forbes, please come onto the stage."
Hearing his name called by the headmaster, Freddie nervously made his way to the stage. The headmaster smiled at
Freddie. "This certificate you have worked so hard to achieve will hang in the school office, and you'll get a personal
award too." A teacher came onto the stage, bringing a jacket that Freddie had desired so much and that he thought he would never wear. The headmaster asked Freddie to take off his coat and helped him into the jacket. As the pupils who had dropped out looked on enviously Freddie knew that collecting waste was certainly not a waste of time.

Many of us spend hours dreaming of getting away from it all — of getting far from the crowded and busy life. Two men from the Solomon Islands by accident did just that and spent 29 days escaping their jobs and lives. They got lost at sea for over four weeks.
Livae Nanjikana and Junior Qoloni set off from Mono Island on September 3 in a small 7-meter boat to travel 200 km to New Georgia Island. It was a trip they had taken several times before. Soon after they set out, they were hit by a storm which damaged their navigation system (导航系统). They said the storm pushed their boat out to sea and their GPS battery died. They lost their ability to tell their location or find their destination at sea. They had to set sail following the direction of the wind. The storm blew them off course (航线) and they ended up off the coast of Papua New Guinea.
The two men were not beaten by their unplanned adventure. Rather than being distressed about their difficulty, they enjoyed the life-threatening escape at sea. Mr Nanjikana said, “We didn’t know where we were but did not expect to be in another country.” They survived by eating oranges they had bought for their journey and coconuts (椰子) they found floating in the ocean, and drinking rainwater. A Papua New Guinean fisherman spotted their boat and brought them to safety.
They’re now staying in Papua New Guinea while making arrangements to get home. Nanjikana said, “I look forward to going back home, but I guess it was a nice break from everything.” However, due to some restrictions, they will not be able to travel from Papua New Guinea to the Solomon Islands for a little while yet.
24. What did the two men plan to do by boat?
A. Test their GPS. B. Travel to an island.
C. Make an adventure. D. Escape their jobs and lives.
25. What was the two men’s attitude towards their unplanned sea exploration?
A. Positive. B. Guilty. C. Annoyed. D. Frightened.
26. What did the two men do to survive?
A. They tried drinking seawater. B. They set sail for another country.
C. They had some fruit and rainwater. D. They repaired the navigation system.
27. What can be concluded from the text?
A. Good heart defeats ill fortune. B. Failure is the mother of success.
C. Where there is a will, there is a way. D. God helps those who help themselves.

Researchers have developed a new soft robot with three behaviours at the same time: rolling (翻滚) forward, turning like a record and following a path that goes around a central point. The equipment, which operates without human or computer control, is useful for developing soft robots that can be used to map unknown environments. The new soft robots are made of something like a ribbon (缎带) and then joined together at the end to form a ring.
When the robots are placed on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the surrounding air, one part of the ribbon touching the surface becomes smaller, while one part in the air does not. This results in a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls. “The ribbon rolls on its horizontal axis (横轴), giving the ring forward strength.” says Jie Yin, a professor of mechanical engineering.
The robot also turns along its central axis. And as it moves forward it travels in a path around a central point, basically moving in a large circle. However, if the robot meets a boundary (障碍), like the wall of a box, it will travel along the boundary.
The twisted ring robots are examples of equipment whose behaviour is controlled by physical intelligence, meaning their actions are determined by their structural design and the materials they are made of, rather than being directed by a computer or human.
“Soft robotics is still a relatively new field.” Yin says. “Finding new ways to control the movement of soft robots in a repeatable and engineered way moves the field forward. And advancing our understanding of what is possible is exciting.”
28. What makes the robot roll faster?
A. The ribbon. B. The central axis.
C. The shape and material. D. The surface temperature.
29. How does the author introduce the new soft robots?
A. By explaining the working ways. B. By listing experts’ opinions.
C. By making some comparisons. D. By offering reasons and results.
30. Why can the robot keep travelling when meeting a boundary?
A. It is controlled by computer. B. It has special equipment.
C. It has its own intelligence. D. It is designed by human.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Ribbons and Their Rolling. B. The New Soft Robots.
C. Three Creative Movements. D. Twisted Rings and the Axis.
D
From Mozart to Metallica, tons of people enjoy listening to various types of music while they paint, write, or draw. Most believe that music helps increase creativity, but an international study conducted by English and Swedish researchers is challenging that view. The study results were echoed by scientists from Lancaster University, and the University of Gavle, saying their findings show music actually weakens creativity.
To reach their conclusions (结论), researchers had volunteers complete verbal (口头的) problems designed to inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet room, and then again while music played in the background. They found that background music significantly weakened the volunteers’ ability to complete tasks connected with verbal creativity. The team also tested background noises like those commonly heard in a library, but found that such noises had no influence on subjects’ creativity.
The tasks were simple word games. For example, volunteers were given three words, such as dress, rise, and flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word connected with all three that could be combined (结合) to form a common phrase or word. The single word, in this case, would be “sun” (sundress, sunrise, sunflower). Volunteers completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while listening to two different types of music: rock music or light music
“We found strong evidence of weakened performance when playing background music in comparison to quiet background conditions,” says co-author D. Neil McLatchie of Lancaster University. He and his colleagues find that music negatively influences the verbal working memory processes of the brain, preventing creativity. Also, as far as the library background noises having seemingly (似乎) no effect, the study’s authors believe that was the case because library noises create a “regular state” environment that doesn’t affect concentration.
“To conclude, the findings here challenge the popular view that music increases creativity, and instead show that music, whatever type it is, is always a disadvantage for creative performance in problem solving,” the study reads.
32. What does the underlined word “echoed” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Challenged B. Accepted C. Doubted D. Heard
33. What were the volunteers asked to do in the study?
A. To play music. B. To combine given words.
C. To create new words. D. To connect words with music.
34. What can we infer from the study?
A. Quiet background inspires creativity best. B. Library noise does no harm to creativity.
C. Music has a bad effect on language ability. D. Music types matter in creative performance.
35. Which is the main idea of the passage?
A. Quiet Environments Prevent Concentration. B. Background Noise Affects Concentration.
C. Composing Music Weakens Creativity. D. Listening to Music Reduces Creativity.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many high school students focus only on grades and personal hobbies. However, they might be overlooking an important activity: volunteering. 36 In my opinion, volunteering is one of the most valuable experiences a teenager can have.
Volunteering teaches students important skills beyond the classroom. For example, if you volunteer at a local food bank or an elderly care center, you learn to communicate effectively, to organize tasks, and to work as part of a team. 37
Volunteering helps develop empathy and a sense of social responsibility. When students spend time helping people in need, they become more understanding and caring. 38 For example, cleaning a park or helping the elderly gives students a sense of pride and achievement. Such experiences make volunteers realize that they have the power to improve someone else’s life.
39 It shows that a student is well-rounded and cares about the community. While studying is important, volunteering can even help students get better grades. This is because doing volunteer work often inspires them and teaches them valuable time management skills.
In a word, I strongly believe that teenagers should do some volunteer work. It not only contributes to society but also helps volunteers grow into better and more capable people. 40 It is far more valuable than just earning money or playing video games in one’s spare time.
A. It benefits both themselves and others.
B. They offer valuable advice and opportunities.
C. Volunteering greatly improves social responsibility.
D. Even small contributions can make a big difference.
E. The satisfaction of volunteering is a reward in itself.
F. These skills can make you more responsible and confident.
G. Volunteering is highly appreciated by universities and employers.

Freddie Forbes looked excitedly at the stage (舞台) in the packed school hall. The headmaster walked onto the stage, followed by the captains of the school soccer team. Freddie watched enviously as each was presented with a certificate of honour and a special jacket for their contribution to the school’s sporting success over the past year. When the next presentation of special jackets would come around, Freddie knew there was little hope that he would be the receiver of one of these treasured things.
“I wish you all a happy summer holiday,” the headmaster said. “Although most of you will be going away to summer camps, there are still others who will be staying near their home. The local community has asked the school to undertake a project over the next six weeks to help clear up litter around the area and separate it for recycling. If anyone is interested, come to my office and you will be provided with a litter picker, bags and heavy-duty gloves.”
Freddie knew he would be doing nothing over the holiday, so he went to the office along with four other boys to pick up the equipment needed to gather up the rubbish which littered the streets around the school. When he arrived home, his mother looked at him curiously as he placed the equipment on the kitchen table.
“What is all this about?” she asked with a smile on her face. “Mum, I’m a normal pupil and I’m not very good at sports,” he replied. “This waste recycling is one way I can contribute to the good name of the school.”
“Just as long as you don’t get fed up and stop halfway through,” said Mum.
“I have made up my mind to stick this out through thick and thin,” Freddie said confidently.

Thanks for coming to this short presentation on our new product design. We've already developed our adventure hair care oil and named IT adventure tech. Our market research show that our target customers are men between eighteen and forty who like to be outdoors and also enjoy unique products, so we needed to design a new bottle for adventure tech to appeal to that market. Now i'm happy to show you our new bottle design look. IT fits smoothly into your hand and can be easily opened using one hand. Its color and shape are inspired by a black metal drinking flask, and IT comes in two sizes, the regular size and the small travel size. You have probably noticed that we're putting IT out on our official website in two months. Next, i'm going to share with you a short video about our production timeline.
