Those who do live so long can hardly walk, let alone take part in any activities. A few people, however, take part in dangerous activities even though they are more than 100 years old — They keep going and going! There is a great grandmother who likes to challenge herself although she is 101 years old this year. Mary Hardison believes that people should always be cheerful and more importantly, take on all kinds of adventures while they physically still can. So, instead of celebrating her 101st birthday with a boring party, she decided to go paragliding (滑翔跳伞) — an idea she got from her 75-year-old son who recently took it up as a hobby. So on her birthday, cheered on by her big family, she tied herself up together with expert instructor Kevin Hintze, and jumped down fearlessly from the sky near her home in Ogden, Utah. And, it was not just a simple jump either. According to Kevin Hintze, the grandmother recommended him to turn around, as they made their way down. This is not the first time that Mary has done something “wild” and “crazy”. For her 90th birthday she rode all the adult rides at Disneyland. And, she is not done yet — For her 102nd birthday she hopes to go down the 3,000 feet Alpine Slide at Utah’s Park City Mountain Resort! Not surprisingly, this great action has made Mary Hardison very famous and also earned her a place in the Guinness World Records where she broke a 2007 record set by a 100-year-old British woman. What a lady! 4 What do we know about Mary Hardison? A. She took up paragliding as her hobby at the age of 75. B. She is a 101-year-old lady who likes to challenge herself. C. She was recorded in the Guinness World Records in 2007. D. She is the oldest woman in the Guinness World Records. 5. From whom did Mary get the idea of going paragliding? A. Her grandson. B. Kevin Hintze. C. A 100-year-old British woman. D. Her 75-year-old son. 6. How does the author feel about Mary’s action? A. Amazed. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Worried. 7. Where can you probably read such a text? A. a news report. B. an advertisement. C. a novel. D. a science report. 4. B 5. D 6. A 7. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida. “A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says. “Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is. The scale can’t tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them. You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (强度) training class. Don’t get too excited—it’s just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight, and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day. So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body composition. Keep in mind that if you’re exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer. 8. What can we know from Dolgan’s words from paragraph 2? A Your weight changes little during a day. B. Your scale mass is affected by many factors. C. Your workout is not effective if you gain weight. D. Your weight is determined only by muscle and fat. 9. What will most probably happen after you exercise and eat healthy for 3 months? A. You will weigh more. B. Your muscle mass will decrease. C. Your body fat will increase. D. Your body composition will change. 10. How much water may a man weighing 150 pounds have in his body? A. 30 pounds. B. 60 pounds. C. 100 pounds. D. 140 pounds. 11. Which of the following could be the best title for the text? A. Why Do We Gain Weight? B. How to Work Out Effectively? C. What Is the Composition of Our Body? D. Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain? 【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章解释了在坚持锻炼并进行健康饮食的同时,体重不降反增的原因。 【8题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段第一句““A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says.(他说:“一个人的体表质量是肌肉、脂肪、骨头、血液,甚至是我们肺中携带的空气的组合。”)”可知,体重是肌肉、脂肪、骨骼、血液甚至肺里空气的质量总和。由此可推知,体重受多种因素影响。故选B。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段的“When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease.(当你开始通过锻炼来改变你的身体组成——通过增加更多的肌肉量和减少体脂——你的体重可能会增加,而体脂率可能会降低。)”可推知,在坚持锻炼并进行健康饮食后,最有可能发生的是你的身体组成会发生变化。故选D。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight(水大约占一个人体重的65%到90%)”可知,人体的含水量约占人体体重的65%到90%。由此可知,体重150磅的人体内含水量应在(150×65%=97.5)磅至(150×90%=135)磅之间。故选C。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds? “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.(你是否一直在锻炼,饮食也很健康,但当你站在秤上时,秤上显示你胖了几磅?“这很正常,这并不意味着你的锻炼没有效果,”佛罗里达州迈阿密海滩的运动生理学家Jeffrey A. Dolgan说。)”和第二段的“Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.(在例行锻炼后,身体各个部位的质量百分比会立即发生15%的变化。所以,如果你在锻炼和健康饮食的同时体重增加,这可能不是你想的那种类型的体重增加。)”可知,文章主要分析了坚持锻炼并进行健康饮食后体重不降反增的原因。D项“Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain?(为什么我锻炼后体重反而增加了?)”能概括文章主要内容,最适合作本文标题。故选D。 D A broken heart and a sad ending to a long friendship. That’s something most of us have experienced, or probably will. After all, it’s part of human life. But the experience can be hard to get over. But research shows there are pathways through the heartache. Listening to sad music is a major one. It can help you begin to feel joy and hopefulness about your life again. It can arouse the desire to connect with others. Sad music can help heal and uplift you from your broken heart. A recent study from Germany found the emotional influence of listening to sad music is an arousal of feelings of empathy (同情), and a desire for positive connection with others. That, itself, is psychologically healing. It draws you away from concentration on yourself, and possibly towards helping others in need of comfort. Another experiment, from the University of Kent, found that when people were experiencing sadness, listening to music that was “beautiful but sad” improved their mood. In fact, it did so when the person first consciously accept the situation causing their sadness, and then began listening to the sad music. That is, when they intended that the sad music might help, they found that it did. These findings link with other studies that show accepting your sad situation emotionally leads to healing and growth beyond it. It seems unbelievable but it does make sense. For example, research from Cornell University found that accepting discomfort about a life experience or new situation, and viewing it as a step towards growth and change, motivates people to find a pathway through it, beyond it. As Churchill famously said, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” That discomfort points you towards creating a plan, a new action. It brings hope. 12. What can we learn from Paragraph 3 and 4? A. Sad music can make sad people feel better. B. Sad music can make people help others. C. Sad music can make people believe in themselves. D. Sad music can make people concentrate on themselves. 13. What does the underlined phrase in the last paragraph mean? A. Hearing a swear word used by enemies. B. Having an unpleasant experience. C. Getting an extremely pleasant time. D. Avoiding a place to go after death. 14. How does the author develop this article? A. By comparing examples. B. By giving directions. C. By listing figures. D. By presenting research findings. 15. Which of the following can be the best title for the article? A. How to Find Pathways through Heartaches B. Why Listening to Sad Music Heals Your Broken Heart C. What We Can Do to Overcome Discomfort in Life D. How We React to a Broken Heart Matters a Lot 【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了听悲伤的音乐在治愈心灵创伤中的作用,相关研究表明,听悲伤的音乐可以帮助人们重新感受到生活的快乐和希望,唤起同理心,并激发与他人建立积极联系的欲望。 【12题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“Sad music can help heal and uplift you from your broken heart. A recent study from Germany found the emotional influence of listening to sad music is an arousal of feelings of empathy (同情), and a desire for positive connection with others.(悲伤的音乐能够帮助你从破碎的心灵中恢复过来并重新振作起来。德国最近的一项研究发现,聆听悲伤音乐所产生的情感影响会引发共鸣之情,并促使人们渴望与他人建立积极的联系)”可知,悲伤的音乐对悲伤的人而言有治愈作用,能改善他们的情绪。故选A项。 【13题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词下文“That discomfort points you towards creating a plan, a new action. It brings hope.(这种不适会让你制定一个计划,一个新的行动。它带来了希望)”可推知,此处描述的一种不适的、糟糕的经历。结合选项内容可知,划线短语意思应该是“有难以忍受的经历”。故选B项。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“A recent study from Germany found the emotional influence of listening to sad music is an arousal of feelings of empathy (同情), and a desire for positive connection with others.(德国最近的一项研究发现,聆听悲伤音乐所产生的情感影响是唤起了人们的同情心,并激发了与他人建立积极联系的欲望)”、第四段“Another experiment, from the University of Kent, found that when people were experiencing sadness, listening to music that was “beautiful but sad” improved their mood.(肯特大学的另一项实验表明,当人们感到悲伤时,聆听“优美但悲伤”的音乐能够改善他们的情绪)”和最后一段中“For example, research from Cornell University found that accepting discomfort about a life experience or new situation, and viewing it as a step towards growth and change, motivates people to find a pathway through it, beyond it.(例如,康奈尔大学的研究发现,接受对某种生活经历或新情况的不适感,并将其视为迈向成长和改变的一步,会激励人们找到克服这种不适的方法,甚至超越它)”可推知,文章通过呈现多个研究结果,来表明听悲伤音乐的积极作用。故选D项。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中“But research shows there are pathways through the heartache. Listening to sad music is a major one. It can help you begin to feel joy and hopefulness about your life again. It can arouse the desire to connect with others.(但研究表明,人们可以通过一些方式来缓解心痛情绪。 Four Ways to Be a Great Roommate Having a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or, easily, one of the worst.___16___Follow these tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships sour. ◇Talk things out. 4. What do we know about Mary Hardison? A. She took up paragliding as her hobby at the age of 75. B. She is a 101-year-old lady who likes to challenge herself. C. She was recorded in the Guinness World Records in 2007. D. She is the oldest woman in the Guinness World Records. 5. From whom did Mary get the idea of going paragliding? A. Her grandson. B. Kevin Hintze. C. A 100-year-old British woman. D. Her 75-year-old son. 6. How does the author feel about Mary’s action? A. Amazed. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Worried. 7. Where can you probably read such a text? A. a news report. B. an advertisement. C. a novel. D. a science report. C Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds? “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. A. Your weight changes little during a day. D A broken heart and a sad ending to a long friendship. 14 How does the author develop this article? Some roommates become the best of friends, and some don't. Don't put pressure on yourself or your roommate, especially when you first meet.___18___And if your roommate doesn't end up being your best friend, don't worry. ◇Ask before you take.
