Autumn on a cider farm smells like apples. The rich, deep and fruity smell of apples will attract you.
“It is really a wonderful time, one of the most beautiful times for the farm,” Matilda Temperley points out as we enjoy the sight of the trees with apples, relax in the cool morning light and bathe in a light mist that appears around the farm.
While the Temperleys have been farming here since the 1960s, cider has been made here for hundreds of years, with the area famous for its apples and the quality of cider it produces.
“We have a total of about 105 different kinds of apples on the farm, but we use 40 main kinds in our cider,” Matilda explains as we head down a path.“Harvesting starts in September with pears and eating apples, and then the main cider apple harvest starts in October and runs through until Christmas.”
As we walk past the trees, the different apples are close to our eyes and so many apples are on the trees. Matilda picks up a small, yellowy-green apple from the ground as we walk, taking a bite before tossing the core into the trees.
We reach a few rows of trees that look different from the others. These trees are thick with small branches and small red apples.“They are called‘Stoke Red’. You can always recognize them because they look like big olive trees and grow like weeds,” she explains.
“Living among apple trees and enjoying the smell of cider, what a pleasant life it is!”I say to myself while walking among apple trees with Matilda.

A father had a family of sons who were always quarrelling with each other. When he failed 31 (deal) with their quarrels by his exhortations, he decided to give them a practical explanation of the 32 (advantage) of disunity.
One day, he told his sons to bring him 33 bundle of sticks. He then placed the bundle of sticks into the hands of each of them one after the other, and ordered them to break it 34 pieces. They tried their best but were 35 (able) to do it.
He then untied the bundle, took the 36 (separately) sticks one by one, and again put them into his sons' hands. Thus they broke them 37 (easy). He then educated them in these words:“My sons, 38 you are of one mind and unit e to help each other, you will be as strong as this bundle of sticks, but if you are divided, you 39 (break) as easily as these sticks. You should understand that unity is 40 (strong).”
