The brothers set off from the Jiayuguan in Gansu Province on July 15. It took the two 131 days of running and walking along the main west-to-east length of the Great Wall to reach the Shanhaiguan on November 22. Their Great Wall journey covered 3,263 kilometers. They are the first known brothers and Thomas the youngest person, to succeed in running the wall in one journey.
The two brothers’ love for the Great Wall is from their father William. William once ran along the wall 35 years ago. And it took him about half a year. He has spent more than 30 years of his life visiting, studying and protecting the wall. And his action influenced his two sons. They spent most of their weekends walking, photographing and picking up rubbish from the Great Wall.

We often say that we should “live in the moment”, enjoying what we are doing right now—perhaps by looking at the world around us or focusing on just one thing at a time. However, it’s very easy to spend time thinking about the future. Experts (专家) say that this can be good for us, too—especially when we’re thinking about the holidays we’d like to take!
Long before you pack your bags, get on a plane or put your feet in the sea, thinking about your holiday can have a good effect (影响) on your mind. Expert Matthew Killingsworth did research (研究) on this subject. “We spend a lot of our mental lives living in the future,” he said.
Looking to the future can make us happy if we know that good things are coming. As Killingsworth said, “Travel is an especially good thing to look forward to.” He says that we can start enjoying a trip as soon as we start planning it. We know that vacations are short, so we enjoy every moment of them, even before they start.
Even if you don’t have a holiday coming up, searching online for places to visit and things to see can make you happy. Picturing your future trip will make you look forward to all the fun you’re going to have.
One thing that doesn’t feel so good, however, is the end of the holiday!
39. What did Matthew Killingsworth’s research show?
A. Holidays need careful planning.
B. People often think about the future.
C. Travel makes people forget problems.
D. People enjoy vacations more than work.
40. Why does planning a trip make people happy?
A. Because it stops travel problems.
B. Because it saves money and time.
C. Because it brings hope for future fun.
D. Because it teaches them new planning skills.
41. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?
A. B. C. D.
42. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Why holidays often end sadly.
B. Why vacations are short but fun.
C. Reasons for living in the moment.
D. How planning holidays brings happiness.
D
The 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China points out the importance of reading and calls on people to read more books, so shared bookhouses have appeared in many places. Reading has become a trend in our country.
A reading campaign (行动) took place in Shenyang in April, 2023. Many people took part in it. Li Hong, a girl from a junior high school, said, “My mother and I took part in the campaign because both of us like reading. Books are our necessary furniture in our house. I know a lot about Chinese classic (经典的) works. Reading makes my life colourful and will change my dream into reality (现实).”
Reading is one thing, but knowing how to read and what to read is another.
There are mainly three kinds of reading: recreational reading, study-type reading and survey reading. Recreational reading can bring you much fun. You can read at a relaxed speed. Study-type reading usually needs you to read the text very carefully to understand the ideas and details. Survey reading is a way of reading fast to get the main idea or find the information you need.
What kind of books should you read? Emerson, a great writer and thinker, had three rules: never read a book that is not a year old; never read any but famous books; never read a book you don’t like.
Good books can lift you to a higher plane (境界). Whatever you read, read with interest, with the whole mind. Try to be a best reader. If you are getting the most out of a book, you will do things more confidently. Reading is rewarding (有益的)!
43. What can we infer (推断) about Li Hong from the second paragraph?
A. There is no other furniture in her house but books.
B. Her mother teaches Chinese in a junior high school.
C. She has probably read the book Journey to the West.
D. She has changed her dream because of the campaign.
44. Which of the following probably belongs to survey reading?
A. Learning a long poem at a relaxed speed.
B. Reading a novel carefully to write a report.
C. Enjoying interesting comic strips as you like.
D. Searching newspapers quickly for something.
45. What kind of books should we read according to Emerson?
A. Books that are well known. B. Books that cost a lot of money.
C. Books that are about rules. D. Books that come out within a year.
46. What is the purpose of writing this text?
A. To introduce a reading campaign. B. To advise us to build bookhouses.
C. To encourage people to read books. D. To tell us about some classic works.

Many children don’t like doing chores. But asking children to do chores is more than just getting the house cleaned. It can also help children to be independent and responsible.
Luckily, there is an app to help. The app You Rule Chores lets kids get up from the sofa and do chores. Through smartphone games, the app turns children into housework players. “It is difficult to get kids to do work around the house. We made the app to teach kids self-control, which is very important to their future,” one of the app engineers said.
The games are fun, and the app is super easy to use. You Rule Chores is my favourite chore app so far.
—Sam, a middle school student
Young kids like to help out around the house, but fewer parents hear the words “What can I do to help?” from their older kids. A study shows that only 65% of the kids aged 16 to 18 take part in chores.
You Rule Chores is an app the whole family will benefit from (从中受益). Now my kids often compete to see who can do more housework.
—Brooke, a mother of three kids
How to use You Rule Chores? First, each child needs to choose one of the app’s characters (角色). Then the child can start to do chores. Once he finishes it, he can get some coins (硬币) from the app. He can use them to buy things from the online store.

Even if you don’t have a holiday coming up searching online for places to visit and things to see can make you happy. Picturing your future trip will make you look forward to all the fun you’re going to have.
One thing that doesn’t feel so good, however, is the end of the holiday!

The 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China points out the importance of reading and calls on people to read more books, so shared bookhouses have appeared in many places. Reading has become a trend in our country.
A reading campaign (行动) took place in Shenyang in April, 2023. Many people took part in it.

Guilin is famous for its beautiful scenery. The Lijiang River is a must-see. We took a boat ride on the river, and it felt like rowing in a picture. We took lots of photos there. In the evening, we just couldn’t wait to try the local food—Guilin Rice Noodles. They tasted very delicious.
