The sun rose gently when I picked up my new schoolbag and left home. Standing at the gate of the senior high school, I felt a little nervous but also excited — this campus was much bigger than my junior high school.
I stepped into the classroom, and many classmates were already there. We all looked at each other with odd eyes. Our head teacher was a kind woman. She smiled and asked us to introduce ourselves. When it was my turn, my voice was small, but her encouraging look helped me relax.
In the morning, the classes were interesting. Our Chinese teacher told us funny stories, and our math teacher used easy examples to explain new knowledge. I took notes carefully. During the break, the girl next to me talked to me. We found that we both loved taking photos, which made us become friends quickly.
At noon, I had lunch in the school dining hall. There were more kinds of food. I stood in line with my new friend and talked about our primary school stories. In the afternoon P.E. class, we ran and played games together. The strange feeling was gone, and the playground was full of our laughter.
When school ended, the sunset made the sky red. I walked home happily. It was a great first day. I can’t wait for tomorrow!

The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have for one night. It’s best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to do.
Frank, Aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both anxious and excited before their first day. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join in some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
David, Aged 19
I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.
Eddie, Aged 20
When I started high school, I was really nervous too, especially since I had been homeschooled all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.
1.What can we infer from Sharon’s words about high school?
A.Teachers are quite strict.
B.Students often stay up at night.
C.Teachers provide little care for students.
D.Students should make good use of their time.
2.Who mentions the importance of friends?
A.David. B.Frank. C.Sharon. D.Eddie.
3.How did Eddie feel on his first day of high school?
A.Excited. B.Worried. C.Bored. D.Relaxed.
What a day! That morning. I was worried that no one would talk to me. But I was wrong. I didn’t feel awkward or frightened at all on the first day of senior high school. I miss my friends from junior high school, but I believe I will make new friends here and that there’s a lot to explore at senior high school. I feel much more confident than I felt that morning.
My name is Adam and I’m a freshman at senior high school. Going from junior high school to senior high school is a really big challenge. The first week was a little confusing.
First, I had to think very carefully about which courses I wanted to take. The school adviser helped me choose the suitable ones from maths, English, chemistry, world history, Chinese and so on. I know that Chinese is a very difficult language, but I hope to be fluent when I graduate. My adviser recommended (推荐) that I should sign up for advanced literature because I like English and I’m good at it.
I had to choose extra-curricular activities, too. I tried to join the school football team, but the coach told me that I didn’t play well enough. Obviously, I was unhappy, but I won’t quit. I’ll find a way to improve on my own so that I can make the team next year. I joined a volunteer club instead. Every Wednesday, we work at a soup kitchen and hand out food to homeless people in the community.
I know I’ll have to study harder as a senior high school student and get used to being responsible for a lot more. I’m a bit worried about keeping up with the other students in my advanced courses, and it’ll be quite difficult to get used to all the homework. Still, I’m happy to be here. Studying hard isn’t always fun, but I’ll be well prepared for university or whatever else comes in the future.
1.How did the author feel after the first morning of senior high school?
A.He felt anxious. B.He felt more confident.
C.He felt helpful. D.He felt very frightened.
2.Which course did the school adviser recommend the author to take?

3.What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?
A.Adam made up his mind to make the team the next year.
B.The coach helped Adam practice playing football.
C.Adam handed out food to the students in the school.
D.The coach agreed that Adam could enter the team in the second year.
4.Which of the following words can describe Adam?
A.Positive. B.Negative. C.Dependent. D.Patient.
Unit 1话题练习
After entering high school, you may find there are many clubs at your school. You may think you’re too busy to join one. But as a former high school student, I can tell you joining a school club can greatly benefit you.
Your old friends may have left you after entering high school. And it means you need to meet new people. Joining a club allows you to talk with others and find those who have similar interests as you. Based on my experience, I have met some of my best friends from club activities which opened up many new doors for me.
Another really nice thing about joining a club is that it looks really good on your applications. Trying new things is something that looks really good on any application. Being outgoing is considered a very good quality. What’s more, it can help you develop skills that can serve you during future college interviews.
Besides, joining a club can make students use their free time wisely. Most teens go to schools, then go back home and spend the rest of the day in front of a screen. Teens are also very likely to fall into the wrong crowd, which could lead to some bad results. Clubs are good places to spend time, with good people to fall back on.
The most important reason why you should join a club is the long-term benefits it brings. The skills you learn in clubs are necessary ones that can be used in everyday life, which I think is the final goal of joining a club.
So if you haven’t joined a school club yet, you know what you should do now.
1.What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A.Friends should share common interests.
B.Joining a club helps one make friends.
C.Joining a club benefits one’s mental health.
D.Friends may leave each other sooner or later.
2.What does Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Teens today aren’t so interested in joining clubs.
B.Some classrooms are not big enough for students.
C.Doing club activities can help teens attend a good university.
D.Joining a club helps keep students away from doing bad things.
3.In the author’s opinion, what’s the greatest benefit of joining a club?
A.Developing new hobbies.
B.Meeting different people.
C.Getting useful life skills.
D.Making use of your free time.
4.What’s the best title for the text?
A.Why Should You Join a Club?
B.What Club Should You Join?
C.How Can You Join a Club You Like?
D.Should You Join a Second Club?
Joining a club is a great way to make friends, develop skills, and enrich your school life. Here are three popular clubs at our school for you to explore:
Environmental Protection Club
The Environmental Protection Club focuses on raising students’ awareness of environmental issues and organizing practical activities. Every month, we hold “Green Campus” campaigns, such as tree-planting on the school playground and waste-sorting competitions in classrooms. Last semester, we worked with the local community to clean up the nearby river, which was highly praised by the town government. Members also get the chance to attend environmental lectures given by university professors. Whether you’re interested in protecting wildlife or reducing plastic waste, this club is for you.
Drama Club
If you love acting, singing, or stage design, the Drama Club is the perfect choice. We put on two plays every school year — one in the fall and one in the spring. Last year, our performance of The Little Prince attracted over 300 audience members, including students, teachers, and parents. Club members take turns in different roles: some act as characters, some design costumes and sets, and others handle lighting and sound. Even if you have no prior experience, our experienced teachers will provide training sessions every Wednesday afternoon.
Robotics Club
For students who are curious about technology and engineering, the Robotics Club offers an exciting platform. We learn to build and program robots using simple kits. Every year, we take part in the provincial high school robotics competition. Last year, our team won the third prize for designing a robot that could help with household chores like sweeping the floor. The club meets every Tuesday and Thursday after school in the science lab. You don’t need to be good at math or science — just bring your enthusiasm.

3.What do we know about the Robotics Club?
A.It meets once a week. B.It requires members to be good at math.
C.Its team won a prize last year. D.It teaches members to build household robots only.
I was thirteen years old. My family had moved to Southern California from North Florida a year before. Angry and stubborn, I could not adapt to this sudden change. Like so many teenagers, I struggled to escape from anything that did not agree with my picture of the world. A “good without need of guidance” kid, I rejected any kind of offering of love.
One night, after a particularly difficult day, I stormed into my room, shut the door and got into bed. As I lay down in the privacy of my bed, my hands slipped under my pillow. There was an envelope. I pulled it out and on the envelope, it read, “To read when you’re alone.” Since I was alone, no one would know whether I read it or not, so I opened it. It said “Mike, I know life is hard right now, I know you are upset and I know we don’t do everything right. I also know that I love you completely and nothing you do or say will ever change that. I am here for you and I love you — that will never change. Love, Mom.” That was the first of several “To read when you’re alone” letters.
Nowadays, I travel the world helping people. I was in Sarasota, Florida, teaching a seminar (研讨课) when, at the end of the day, a woman came up to me and shared the difficulty she was having with her son. We walked out to the beach, and I told her of my mom’s undying love and about the “To read when you’re alone” letters. Several weeks later, I got a card that said she had written her first letter and left it for her son. That night as I went to bed, I put my hands under my pillow and remembered the relief I felt every time I got a letter. In the midst of my teen years, the letters were reminders of calm that I was loved in spite of my shortcomings. Today, when the seas of life get stormy, I know that what under my pillow is assurance of love — consistent (始终如一的) and unconditional love changes my life.
1.The author was angry and stubborn mainly because ________.
A.he didn’t like his new school
B.he didn’t get along well with his parents

A.It was written by the author’s friend.
B.It showed mom’s love and understanding.
C.It focused on the author’s school life.
D.It advised the author to move back to Florida.
3.What inspired the lady in Sarasota to write a letter to her son?
A.Her own difficult experience.
B.Her son’s poor performance at school.
C.The author’s rich teaching experience.
D.The author’s sharing of his mother’s action.
4.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Teenage Trouble: Growing Pains
B.Mom’s Love Letters: My Secret Comfort
C.Helping Others: A Journey of Kindness
D.Parental Guidance: My Inner Strength Source

Hello everyone! Meet my new friend Marco. He says Ciao! This means hello in his language. Marco travelled with me this month. When he showed me his country on the map, I was attracted by its shape. It looks like a high-heeled boot (高跟靴) in the Mediterranean Sea that’s kicking a strange-shaped ball. Can you find the name of this ball on the world map?
Marco told me that he loves cars and that his country is well-known for super-fast cars like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati. Isn’t it cool? The people also love soccer here. They call it “Calcio.” He told me that they have won four World Cups. The most recent win was in 2006! When he shared this with me, he was very excited and proud.
We visited the country’s capital and I was amazed to find that it was more than 2500 years old! We walked around and soon it was time for dinner. Marco told me that people there eat pasta (意大利面食) at least once a day. The different sauces and toppings (酱汁和佐料) mean they never get bored of it. Also, they love including seasonal vegetables in their dinners. I couldn’t wait to enjoy the pizza and pasta with different toppings and sauces. The cappuccino and focaccia bread also made me happy. It’s no wonder that the world has adopted so much of their food! The people in this country celebrate many holidays and enjoy eating big meals with their family. The festive atmosphere makes everyone happy.
I was lucky to travel to this country in March and enjoy the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. It is held for four days every year. Last summer, I went on a trip to Ireland, a place full of mystery and charm (魅力). As soon as I arrived on the beautiful island, I felt the fresh sea wind and saw the green sights that seemed to go on forever.
In Dublin, I walked through the narrow streets of Temple Bar. The locals were very friendly and always willing to help. I visited a local market where I saw all kinds of handmade crafts (手艺) and tasted delicious traditional food. The vendors (小贩) were so kind and told me about the history behind their products. I also explored the beautiful parks and gardens, where I saw many people enjoying the sunshine and the natural beauty.
I also visited a small village in the west of Ireland. There, I experienced the simple and real countryside life. The people in the village were warm and welcoming. I stayed with a local family, and the grandmother taught me how to make traditional Irish soda bread. The kitchen was full of the smell of the freshly baked bread, and when I ate, I felt it was as delicious as I had never tasted. I also helped them with some farm work, like feeding the animals and collecting eggs. It was a great way to experience the Irish way of life.
The Irish culture, with its old traditions and the spirit of togetherness, left a lasting mark on me. Unit 3话题练习
Sports play a key role in the physical and mental development of children. Although it’s great to see a child succeed in one sport, it’s important to keep their activities in balance. Joining in multiple (多样的) sports enables children to acquire a knowledge of many movement skills. In addition to this, here are some other good reasons why kids should be encouraged to play several sorts of sports.
Repetitive (重复的) movements can cause the growing bodies to get injured later on. With multi-sports, each sport works the body slightly differently. This will lead to fewer overuse injuries. Also, kids who are expert in one sport may end up losing interest and eventually give up. Being expert in a sport raises expectations and may put too much pressure on young kids. Having all kinds of experiences will keep children interested and active, and even make them enjoy sports without any pressure.
Multi-sports also allow kids to experience different roles. Being a goalkeeper in a football team is very different from being a point guard in basketball. Being exposed to (接触) baseball develops better hand-eye coordination (协调). Soccer develops better footwork. Volleyball develops jumping and hand-eye coordination. The list goes on and on! Joining in multiple sports broadens a child’s developmental, social, and situational experience. It opens up opportunities to become a better competitor and a promising athlete — flexible and energetic.
Besides developing a wide range of sports skills, more importantly, multi-sports provide opportunities for children to discover their liking. With the help of the right coaches, sports become fun, inspiring kids’ interests. So if you can’t decide whether your child should focus on one sport or try some different sports, I hope you can make a better decision now.
1.What will happen to kids if they do one sport repeatedly?
A.They can be more likely to get injured.
B.They can spare more time to study.
C.They can be skilled at the sport early.
D.They can stay more concentrated.
2.What’s implied about multi-sports in Paragraph 3?
A.They inspire kids’ sporting spirit.
B.They help kids develop their special talents
C.They help advance kids’ all-round development.
D.They have much higher requirements for kids.
3.What does the author want to express in the last paragraph?
A.Children should turn their interests into professions.
B.Sports skills make kids more popular at school.
C.Parents should lower their expectations for kids
D.Multi-sports help kids find their favorite sports.
4.What is the text mainly about?
A.How sports benefit kids.
B.Why kids should try multi-sports.
C.What sports children should try.
D.Why multi-sports are popular today.
Making exercise fun is a challenge for many people who struggle to find the motivation (动机) to work out. But rather than forcing yourself to enjoy running or that gym class you once attended, the solution may lie in something more straightforward — simply choosing exercises that fit your personality, according to a recent study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology.
To reach their findings, the study’s co-lead author, Flaminia Ronca, a professor in exercise science at University College London, and her coworkers first directed the 132 subjects, aged between 25 and 51 years old, to complete a questionnaire showing their personality types.
The study took a commonly used model that describes someone’s personality, namely outgoing people, quiet worriers, kind helpers, curious explorers, and careful planners. The researchers then ran fitness tests on the subjects and put them into two groups. One group was given an eight-week biking plan, while the control group did 10 minutes a week of stretching (伸展) exercises. Of the 132 subjects, 86 completed both pre-and post-testing either side of these eight weeks.
The study team found that, although fitness improved across all personality types for those who completed the biking and stretching programs, there was a marked difference in enjoyment of exercise. Outgoing people enjoyed the higher-intensity (强度) lab fitness tests, while quiet worriers enjoyed the home-based light-intensity workouts.
The study also showed how exercise affected people’s stress levels based on their personality. People who scored high in neuroticism, meaning they feel more anxious, experienced a bigger drop in stress levels compared with other groups.
“I think that’s quite a powerful message to give,” Ronca said. Considering the many benefits of exercise, she hoped their findings would encourage people to find forms of exercise they enjoy, making it easier to stick to a fitness routine and to improve their fitness over time.
1.In what way were the two groups different in terms of research design?
A.Their age. B.Their hobby. C.Exercise type. D.Health condition.
2.What did the study find about personality?
A.It drives people to achieve dreams. B.It affects the enjoyment of exercise.
C.It shows similarities in certain ways. D.It helps us complete more exercises.
3.What does Ronca intend to explain in the last paragraph?
A.The application of the findings. B.The background of the experiment.
C.The direction of further research. D.The arrangement for daily exercise.
4.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.The Influence of Exercise on Personality B.The Benefits of the Stretching Program
C.Giving You New Motivation to Exercise D.Matching Workouts to Your Personality
It may seem hard to believe, but snacking several times a day can boost your health and fitness — exercise snacking, that is. “Exercise snacks” are short bursts of activity — 30 seconds to 5 or 10 minutes max — that include almost any type of movement. Think climbing stairs, walking, cycling, or dancing. Today, numerous studies prove these mini workouts can make a difference.
Performing 15-to 30-second exercise snacks three times daily was shown to improve cardiorespiratory (心和肺的) fitness levels and exercise performance in inactive adults, according to a small January 2022 study published in the journal Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews.
Adults who reported they didn't work out saw a 17% to 18% reduction in cancer cases after they began doing just 3.4 to 3.6 minutes of intense (激烈的) physical activity daily, a July 2023 study of 22,398 people found. Their daily physical activity was done in bursts lasting less than one or two minutes. Hitting 4.5 minutes (in total) of intense physical activity each day was linked to a 31% to 32% lower risk of cancer, according to the study published in JAMA Oncology.
The benefits of movement extend to brain health, too. Doing even a small amount of easy to hard physical activity every day reduces your risk of dementia (痴呆), according to a March study in JAMDA: The Journal of the Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medical Association.
Exercise snacks are a favorite tool used by Dr. Supatra Tovar, owner of Dr. Supatra Tovar & Associates. “I’m a big proponent of behavior change that starts tiny,” Tovar said. “So I like to create behaviors with my clients that are easy, achievable and doable every day of the week.”
“Your body is kind of lazy,” said Michael Betts, a personal trainer and director at TrainFitness who’s based in London. “Doing these little exercise snacks reminds your body that it does need to work to maintain and improve its overall function.”
1.What can be called an exercise snack according to the text?
A.Singing songs with your classmates.
B.Turning off the lights before leaving school.
C.Jogging without stopping for 20 minutes in PE class.
D.Rushing from your classroom to the dining hall for lunch.
2.What is a benefit that exercise snacks bring according to the text?
A.Lowering cancer risk. B.Improving muscle strength.
C.Keeping people away from dementia. D.Improving the heart rate of inactive adults.
3.What does the underlined word “proponent” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A.Researcher. B.Judge. C.Explorer. D.Supporter.
4.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To compare different types of exercise.
B.To encourage short bursts of physical activity.
C.To show some studies about mini workouts.
D.To stress the importance of daily exercise.

2.What do we know about the letter found under the pillow?
根据文章第一段“Angry and stubborn, I could not adapt to this sudden change.(我生气又固执,无法适应这种突然的变化。)”可知,作者之所以生气和固执,主要是因为他难以适应新环境。故选D。
2.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“It said ‘Mike, I know life is hard right now, I know you are upset and I know we don’t do everything right. I also know that I love you completely and nothing you do or say will ever change that. I am here for you and I love you — that will never change. Love, Mom’.(上面写着:‘迈克,我知道现在生活很艰难,我知道你很不开心,我也知道我们做的并不都是对的。但我也知道,我完全爱你,无论你做什么或说什么,都不会改变这一点。我在这里陪着你,我爱你——这永远不会改变。爱你的,妈妈’。)”可知,这封信是作者的妈妈写的,表达了妈妈的爱和理解。故选B。
3.推理判断题。根据文章第三段“I was in Sarasota, Florida, teaching a seminar (研讨课) when, at the end of the day, a woman came up to me and shared the difficulty she was having with her son. Several weeks later, I got a card that said she had written her first letter and left it for her son.(我当时在佛罗里达州的萨拉索塔教一个研讨班,课快结束的时候,一位女士走到我面前,和我分享了她和儿子之间的困难。

We also visited the Colosseum, Pantheon, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which was really wonderful! Before I said goodbye to Marco, I made a promise to visit again.
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.D 4.B

2.推理判断题。根据第三段“Multi-sports also allow kids to experience different roles. It opens up opportunities to become a better competitor and a promising athlete — flexible and energetic.(参与多项运动还能让孩子体验不同角色。
根据最后一段“Besides developing a wide range of sports skills, more importantly, multi-sports provide opportunities for children to discover their liking. (除了培养广泛的运动技能,更重要的是,多项运动为孩子提供了发现自己喜好的机会。)”可知,作者在最后一段想表达多项运动帮助孩子找到喜欢的运动。故选D项。
