Here is a story:A man sees a butterfly ()The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis ()
Feeling sorry for it,the man decides to help.He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out easily.
Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is unable to fly.If the butterfly doesn't struggle(挣扎;奋斗)to
leave the chrysalis,it can't fly!The struggle develops the energy in the butterfly which makes it fly.
Similarly, the challenges of life bring out the best in young people and make the fly.
入
When people are young, meeting and overcoming challenges will make them strong and ready to face
life. When we look at successful people,we see that the most successful of them are people who have had
to struggle. One famous businessman, who now owns many big supermarkets, used to carry clothes on
his back and sell them from door to door when he was young.Another successful man is Dennis. His father
died when he was only twenty. His father's death forced him to mature fast.He had to bring up a family
$
of nine people. He took up the challenges and overcame them.Today his brothers and sisters are leading
successful lives.
Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them.So some parents and
teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges. They might organize some activities for young
people which provide them with challenges, like rock-climbing,camping,volunteer work and so on.
However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life.We must meet and overcome challenges.
The young people of today will become the leaders of tomorrow. For countries to continue to become
successful,it is important that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them.
24.From the story we know that the butterfly can't fly because
A.it gets out by itself
B.the man feels sorry for it
C.it tries to challenge itself
D.the man helps it come out
25.Dennis's example shows that successful people should
A.overcome the difficulties
B.take up business early
C.become the leaders of tomorrow
D.sell clothes from door to door
26.What is the writer trying to do in this passage?
A.Describe where a butterfly comes from.
B.Encourage young people to face challenges
C.Suggest how to become a successful businessman.
D.Explain what will happen if a person fails the exam.

(海啸)·
On Dec.26,2004,a magnitude-9.1 earthquake in Indonesia set off a massive tsunami. It killed
more than 230,000 people across four countries and cost an estimated 10 billion in damage.
丝
Nov.5 is World Tsunami Awareness Day and at the United Nations Wednesday, disaster risk
reduction was high on the agenda
"What I can tell you is that the tsunami wave cannot be stopped,"said Bulgarians U.N.
Ambassador Georgi Velikov Panayotov. He was on vacation in Thailand in 2004 and survived the tsunami.
"What we can do is to build early warning systems and,of course, educate the population about the
damaging power of the tsunami wave,he said.
On March 11,2011,a magnitude-9 earthquake rocked northeastern Japan triggering a fierce
tsunami that also damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, south of Sendai.
"When the big earthquake hit Japan in 2011,people thought that we were prepared for it,said
Japan's U.N.Ambassador Koro Bessho."It caused severe damage.We had dams;we had drills
However,we had been counting on something that hits every 100 years and the earthquake was of the size
of possibly every 500 years or thousand years,he said.
These two events sent the countries of the region into overdrive to review and improve disaster
preparedness. In 2015 the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction was born.It aims to help create
a better understanding of disaster risk and improve preparedness for an effective response.
Indonesia is made up of thousands of islands which are disaster-prone(易受灾地区).Willem
Rampangilei, head of the Disaster Management Agency of Indonesia, said his government now has
plans for every disaster-prone city.
Countries at risk are also expanding their education programs.Children from an early age are taught
how to react in case of a tsunami and then go with their classmates to higher ground away from coastal
areas to avoid the walls of water the tsunami triggers.

A.The general features of a tsunami.
B.Ways for humans to face a tsunami.
C.His suffering in the 2004 tsunami.
D.The loss caused by the 2004 tsunami.

A.It caused a fierce tsunami.
B.It destroyed a nuclear plant.
C.The size was beyond expectation.
D.There was no effective defense system.

A.Children should be protected by all means.
B.The improvement of preparedness can reduce damage.
C.Proper response in case of a tsunami can save one's life.
D.Stronger measures should be taken in disaster-prone areas.

C.The Unpredictable and Destructive Disaster.
D.Learn from Disasters to Prevent Future Ones.

A "lost tribe"that reached America from Australia may have been the first Native Americans,
according to a new theory.
If proved by DNA evidence, the theory will break long established beliefs about the southerly
migration of people who entered America across the Bering Strait, found it empty and occupied it.
On this theory rests the belief of Native Americans to have been the first true Americans. They would
be classified to the ranks of escapee, beaten to the New World by Aboriginals (in boats.
To a European, this may seem like an academic argument, but to Americans it is a philosophical
question about identity,Silvia Gonzales,of Liverpool University said.
Her claims are based on skeletons found in the California Peninsula of Mexico that have skulls quite
unlike the broad Mongolian features of Native Americans. These narrow-skulled people have more in
common with southern Asians,Aboriginal Australians and people of the South Pacific Region.
The bones, stored at the National Museum of Anthropology(人类学)in Mexico City, have been
carbon-dated and one is 12,700 years old, which places it several thousand years before the arrival of
people from the North."We think there were several migration waves into the Americas at different times
by different human groups,"Dr.Conzales said."The timing, route and point of origin of the first
colonization of the Americas remains a most contentious topic in human evolution."
But comparisons based on skull shape are not considered conclusive by anthropologists,so a team
of Mexican and British scientists, backed by the Natural Environment Research Council, has also
attempted to take out DNA from the bones.Dr.Gonzales declined yesterday to say exactly what the results
were,as they need to be checked, but indicated that they were consistent (with an Australian
origin.

I was a single mother in my 30s who lived down and out with my daughter Peggy in a small apartment,
struggling hard to make our needs meet.
One day,I headed to the downtown for an interview.I sat down in the streetcar, and there against the
seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle decorated with gold,on which there was a name
carved.
On impulse (I determined to find the owner myself.I got off the streetcar in the heavy rain
and thankfully opened the umbrella to protect myself. Then I searched a telephone book for the name.I
found it immediately and called it,waiting patiently, and then a lady answered.
"Yes,"she said in surprise, with extreme excitement."It was my umbrella which had been stolen
a year ago.”
So appealing was her pleasure that I forgot I was looking for a job and went directly to her small
house. She took the umbrella, with teary eyes, explaining with choking voice that the umbrella was given
by her parents, now dead. Her happiness at recovering this special possession was such that to have
accepted her reward would have ruined something,so I refused her offer and left.

Suddenly, the doorbell rang and Peggy rushed to answer it,

Peggy and I took the package in,exchanging confused looks.I was

I was still in confusion when a note attached to the package

my mind.It had been sent by the lady who owned the umbrella.
Holding the note tightly,I couldn't control my tears,a stream of
