Detectives on the Case
Early this morning, a valuable diamond necklace was stolen from Lady Tuckup’s mansion. Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson were called to investigate. The necklace was last seen in the locked ballroom during a grand party. A witness reported seeing a suspicious figure wearing a black coat near the scene. Holmes carefully examined the room and found a small piece of torn cloth and a muddy footprint. "The thief must have entered through the window," he concluded. "Let’s check the security footage and interview all guests."

1. The necklace was last seen in the locked ballroom during a grand party.

2. A witness reported seeing a suspicious figure wearing a black coat near the scene.

分析:
复合宾语结构(reported seeing)中,动名词短语 “seeing...” 作宾语,表示目击者主动提供的信息。
现在分词短语 “wearing a black coat” 作后置定语,生动刻画可疑人物的特征,增强画面感。
3. Holmes carefully examined the room and found a small piece of torn cloth and a muddy footprint.

It’s getting hot. You go to have your hair cut. The barber Tony cuts off part of your hair and sweeps it away, but your hair’s journey is not over after the haircut.
Have you ever thought of planting your old hair after it’s cut off? Some farmers do! What comes up? Not wigs (假发) , but bigger and tastier crops. Hair is full of nitrogen (氮) that helps plants to grow. When cut hair is mixed into soil, the hair breaks down, slowly letting out nitrogen so it can help flowers and vegetables got big a little faster.
If you’ve got a wool sweater on, you’re wearing a sheep’s haircut. Sheep grow fine curly fur called wool. All those curls make air pockets that trap heat, keeping the sheep warm. Farmers shear the sheep in summer, so the sheep don’t feel too hot. And we use the hair to make warm clothes, socks, and hats. Wool can even take in rain without feeling wet. Wool also doesn’t catch fire easily.
What does your hair say about you? Even many years after it has been cut, hair can tell surprising secrets. Because hair is made from bits of old cells, it has trace of chemicals that were in the body when the hair grew. When people are kept in the situation of dangerous chemicals, these traces remain in the hair, even long after they have disappeared from the body itself. Testing hair can help doctors know if there are dangerous chemicals in the food and water. Hair can tell another important secret—whose hair is it? This can be used to help solve crimes.
Hair does so many things for us. It keeps us warm and cool, helps farmers, shows mysteries, and provides endless styling fun. One thing is for sure, it’s not just for wigs any more.
1.In which part of a magazine can we probably read this passage?
A.History B.Fashion C.Science D.Health

A.Hair can absorb nitrogen in the soil to keep it moist.
B.Hair releases nitrogen as it breaks down to help plants grow.
C.Hair prevents nitrogen from damaging crops.
D.Hair replaces chemical fertilizers to reduce costs.
3.What does the underlined part “shear the sheep” mean?
A.Give enough food to the sheep. B.Wash the sheep many times.

阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Most people had never heard of a pet detective (侦探) before watching the old movie Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. However, real-life pet detectives are different from the noisy and funny detective Ventura in the movie. They are trained experts who take their jobs very seriously.
Liu Wei, a 35-year-old man from Shanghai, is quite famous in this new business. He entered the business early. In 2012, he read an article about pet detectives by chance. He decided to become a pet detective. At first, he met with opposition from his family because it was a new industry. And it was not easy to make money by finding an animal. However, Liu didn’t give up. Now Liu has a 12-person team working with him. They have about 30 orders every month.
“It’s a great sense of achievement when I finally find a missing pet after days of efforts,” he said. When he starts to search for a missing pet, the pet owners will tell Liu many details like the pet’s looks, hobbies, health history and others. This is very important. Then Liu waits in the long grass secretly, checks underground pipelines (管道) carefully and searches in the parking lots. To find a missing pet, it’s very common for him to walk tens of thousands of steps a day. Liu also makes good use of modern tools while searching.
The pet detective business has grown in China in recent years as more people keep pets at home. Hiring (雇佣) a pet detective is not cheap. It can cost a few thousand to more than 10,000yuan depending on the area, but it’s worth it for pet owners. “They are not animals. They are members of the family,” Liu said.
So far, Liu’s team has helped reunite (使团聚) more than 1,000 lost cats, dogs and birds with their worried, sad owners.
1.Do real-life pet detectives take their jobs seriously?
2.Who disagreed with Liu’s decision to become a pet detective?
3.What will the pet owners do when Liu starts to search for a missing pet?
4.Why has the pet detective business grown in China recently?
5.What’s passage mainly about?
