The first day of high school felt like stepping onto a new planet. The hallways of Oak Creek High were a noisy river of unfamiliar faces and echoing slamming lockers. My heart hammered against my ribs (肋骨) as I held my schedule tightly, desperately searching for locker 203.
After what felt like a century, I found it—a bright blue metal box that was supposed to be my tiny piece of space. I turned the combination lock, but nothing happened. I tried again, more slowly. The lock refused to open. A wave of panic washed over me. I was trapped in the hallway, late for my first class, defeated by a simple lock.
Just as I was considering hiding in the bathroom, a voice beside me said, “Stubborn, isn’t it?” A girl with warm brown eyes and a friendly smile was standing by locker 205. “Here, let me try.” She took the lock, her movements confident, and with a quick twist, it clicked open. “There you go! I’m Chloe.”
Relief flooded through me. “Thank you! I’m Alex. I was sure I was going to be late.”
“Don’t worry,” she laughed. “We’re heading to the same class, Mr. Davis’s history. I got lost twice already.” Walking to class together, the overwhelming maze of the school suddenly felt a little smaller. That locked door wasn’t just about a locker; it was the barrier to start my new life. And Chloe, with her simple, kind act, was the key that unlocked it all.
4. What was the main problem Alex faced at the beginning?
A. He lost his class schedule. B. His locker combination wouldn’t work.
C. He couldn’t find his classroom. D. He didn’t have any school supplies.
5. How did Chloe help Alex?
A. She gave him her locker. B. She showed him where Mr. Davis’ class was.
C. She opened the lock for him. D. She found the correct locker number for him.
6. How did Alex most likely feel after Chloe helped him?
A. Angry and embarrassed. B. Relieved and grateful.
C. Bored and uninterested. D. Confused and anxious.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. The importance of being on time for class.
B. The challenges of using combination locks.
C. A small act of kindness making a new school day.
D. The difficulty of finding your way in a large school.
B 5. C 6. B 7. C

When Holly Ford walked past a long-disused phone box in her home village of Cladich in 2017, an idea began to form, which combined her love of baking with a new use for the box ignored by almost everyone.
Holly got permission from the community council to use the call box. “Nobody told us it wouldn’t work, but we did get a few locals who thought people would just help themselves to cakes without paying.”
These concerns proved to be wholly unfounded. The honesty box, which is located next to the bread, cookies, lemon drizzle cakes, jams, eggs and candles, has always been used correctly by customers, claims Holly, with the box remaining entirely unstaffed.
“It’s a surprisingly busy road for traffic in the summer,” Holly remarks, “and we do get quite a few notes that people leave for us saying how much they like the idea.”
Only open during the summer months, Holly has turned the box into layers of shelves for her cakes and other local produce. Able to make close to $100 a day in peak summer months, she also runs regular charity bakes in the community.
“I’m not sure the honesty box approach would work in a more urban area,” she tells me. “But for where we live it’s surprisingly easy to make something like this happen. It’s really important to put in the work on social media and to keep your self-belief in the idea.”
Holly is able to judge which cakes most tickle the taste of passing travelers with a sweet tooth. “The brownies are the most popular, always,” she tells me. “I do like expanding the range. The only thing is that I can’t get them to rise at the moment! Maybe next summer they’ll be in the box!”
8. What was the initial reaction of some locals to Holly’s phone box idea?
A. They fully supported her creative business plan.
B. They believed the idea would attract too many tourists.
C. They thought the phone box should be used for other purposes.
D. They were concerned that people might take cakes without paying.
9. Why is the box beside the cakes called “the honesty box”?
A. Because Holly is an honest and reliable cake maker.
B. Because customers use it properly with no salesman.
C. Because the cakes and local produce are safe to buy and eat.
D. Because Holly has gained official permission for her business.
10. What does the underlined word “tickle” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Please. B. Influence. C. Develop. D. Change.
11 Which word best describes customers’ attitude towards Holly’s call box?
A. Favorable. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Doubtful.
D 9. B 10. A 11. A

根据最后一段中的“Holly is able to judge which cakes most tickle the taste of passing travelers with a sweet tooth. “The brownies are the most popular, always,” she tells me. (Holly能够判断出哪种蛋糕最能_____路过的甜食爱好者的口味。“布朗尼蛋糕总是最受欢迎的,”她告诉我。)”可知,后文提到布朗尼蛋糕最受欢迎,说明“tickle”应与“满足、取悦”相关,“Please”意为“使满意、取悦”符合语境。故选A项。
根据第四段中的““It’s a surprisingly busy road for traffic in the summer,” Holly remarks, “and we do get quite a few notes that people leave for us saying how much they like the idea.” (“夏天这条路的交通出奇地繁忙,”霍莉说,“而且我们确实收到不少人们留给我们的便条,说他们非常喜欢这个想法。”)”以及最后一段提到布朗尼蛋糕最受欢迎可知,顾客对霍莉的电话亭售卖点持支持、认可的态度,“Favorable”意为“赞许的、支持的”符合语境。故选A项。
Going from middle school to high school can be difficult, as students are faced with new academic (学业的) and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and their families should know.
People who have a fixed mindset (思维倾向) believe that they are born to be great or weak. On the other hand, people that have a growth mindset believe that their greatness or weakness is because of their own actions. I totally agree that students should have a growth mindset. I don’t expect any student to move from just passing a subject to an A+. It’s going to take time and focused effort; just keep working on it.
Parents should prepare students to fight the battle “on the pillow” and “in the kitchen”. When I say “pillow” I mean sleep. Not having enough sleep can have some surprising effects on students, including improper behavior, anxiety and poor grades. The second weapon (武器) is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades. This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled (安排过度的) time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.
A lot of students know each other from primary and middle school. They are in their “comfort zones”, feeling they have a sense of control over and expectation of their relationships. But come the first real day of high school, that will all change. The reason I encourage high school freshmen to step out of their comfort zones, though often scary, is that comfort zones get boring and there are many kinds of people to get to know. Let’s encourage them to get involved, have fun and play.
12. Which of the following represents (代表) a fixed mindset?
A. I’m at the starting point of my ability. B. My mother is not good at chemistry either.
C. I should start studying a little earlier next time. D. It’s okay if I fail; at least I’ve learned something.
13. What might the author encourage parents to do?
A. To prepare healthy meals for their kids.
B. To praise their kids when they do well in school.
C. To take their kids to visit their grandparents often.
D. To buy soft pillows for their kids to have a good rest.
14. What is the third weapon mainly about?
A. Enjoying good health. B. Owning the ability to say no.
C. Balancing schoolwork and play. D. Developing time management skills.
15. Which one is the best title of the passage?
A. Making friends in High School
B. Academic Challenges in High School
C. Differences between Middle School and High School
D. Preparations for High School: What you need to know
B 13. A 14. D 15. D

根据第二段“People who have a fixed mindset (思维倾向) believe that they are born to be great or weak.(拥有固定思维倾向的人认为他们生来就是厉害或弱小的)”可知,固定思维倾向是把人的能力归为与生俱来的。
根据第三段“The second weapon (武器) is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades.(第二个武器是健康均衡的饮食。研究表明,每天吃营养食物和锻炼60分钟的学生在上学期间注意力更集中,学习成绩和成绩也有所提高)”可知,作者认为健康均衡的饮食很重要,可以帮助孩子们改善学习表现。因此,作者会鼓励家长为他们的孩子准备健康的食物。故选A项。
根据第三段中“This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled (安排过度的) time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.(最后这一“秘密”策略就是不要过度安排时间。要确保学生们懂得如何制定切实可行的计划,以及如何拒绝那些对他们而言不重要的任务和活动)”可知,第三个武器主要是培养时间管理技能,合理安排时间。故选D项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并根据第一段“Going from middle school to high school can be difficult, as students are faced with new academic (学业的) and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and their families should know.(从初中升入高中可能会很困难,因为学生们会面临新的学业和社交方面的挑战。在高中开学的第一天之前,每一位即将升入高中的新生及其家人都应该了解一些事情)”可知,文章主要为每个即将进入高中的新生和他们的家人介绍了一些应该知道的事情。D选项“高中入学准备:你需要了解的内容”最符合文章标题。故选D项。

The first day of high school felt like stepping onto a new planet. The hallways of Oak Creek High were a noisy river of unfamiliar faces and echoing slamming lockers. My heart hammered against my ribs (肋骨) as I held my schedule tightly, desperately searching for locker 203.
After what felt like a century I found it—a bright blue metal box that was supposed to be my tiny piece of space.

A. Favorable. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Doubtful.
