Walking into school on the first day of sixth grade, my legs felt weak and my hands were shaking. I was always nervous on the first day of school. But this was my last first day of primary school, and I had never had a male teacher before. Somehow, I knew this school year would be different, but I had no idea the lifelong influence it would have on me.
Mr. Tony Harrison quickly soothed (安抚) my uneasiness with his friendly welcome and a big smile on his face. “Welcome to sixth grade! Take any seat,” he said. Mr. H, he preferred to be called, was young, energetic and showed happiness with his smiling face and cheerful voice. I chose a seat near the front of the classroom. My mum always told me sitting in the back encouraged trouble, besides I was also nearsighted.
Mr. H was an encouraging teacher and he made learning exciting with his fun ideas. I had always loved school, but somehow Mr. H made school even better. It did not matter if you were the best or worst student in the class, he made you feel special.
Smiley faces were his trademark. He always put a smiley face on the chalkboard, homework assignments and test papers. When he signed my yearbook, he added a smiley face. I am sure he did the same in everyone’s book. At the end of the school year, Mr. H gave each student a yellow, enamel pin-on(珐琅别针) smiley face. Years later, when I saw my first smiley face emoji, I immediately thought of Mr. H.
I realised Mr. H’s influence on me when I started my first job in high school. Even as a part-timer working in the mail room, I had the ability to influence others and make their day. Mr. H taught many students and adults during his lifetime. His cheerful outlook and kindness left a positive influence on me and countless others.

7. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the last paragraph?

Do you sometimes feel too afraid to try new things? If you want to grow and get better, you need to take risks and challenge yourself. But your brain often tells you to stay safe. It might say, “Don’t bother trying something new.” Even when these thoughts aren’t reasonable, our anxiety can still win. Instead of thinking about the good things that could happen, we worry more about “What if something goes wrong?”
Avoiding all risks might seem smart, but it can make you feel unhappy. The problem is that we often make decisions based on feelings, not facts. We think, “The more scared I feel, the riskier it is.” But feelings aren’t always reasonable. If we knew how to think about risks clearly, we’d know which risks are worth taking. For example, trying a new hobby like painting might feel daunting at first, but it could bring you joy and new skills.
Whether you’re afraid to change your job or too nervous to ask a friend for coffee, learning to take “good risks” can improve your life. Here are good ways to help.
Balance feelings with facts. Many times, we think fear means something risky. But that’s not true. For example, driving a car feels safe because we do it every day, but giving a speech in public might make your heart beat fast. Yet the fact shows that car accidents are much more common than getting hurt while speaking! So before you avoid doing something scary, take three deep breaths and ask yourself, “What’s the real risk here?”
Take steps to succeed. You can do many small things to lower risks. If you’re nervous about a test, make a study plan and review each day — this helps you feel more prepared. It’s okay to feel butterflies in your stomach when you try something new. Facing fear helps build your mental muscle, just like exercising builds physical muscle. So, taking smart risks helps you become mentally stronger.
8. What is the main reason people avoid trying new things?
A. Their brains tell them to stay safe. B. They lack the necessary skills.
C They don’t have enough time. D. They prefer familiar hobbies.
9. What does the underlined word “daunting” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Exciting. B. Frightening. C. Useless. D. Impressive.
10. Which of the following statements would the author most likely agree with?
A. Fear is a good sign of real danger.
B. People should avoid activities that cause fear.
C. Daily habits make risks seem smaller than they are.
D. Public speaking is more dangerous than driving.
11. What does the author suggest doing to reduce the risk of failing a test?
A. Think positively. B. Ask a friend for help.
C. Avoid taking the test. D. Make a study plan and review daily.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. C 11. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。本文探讨了人们因害怕风险而避免尝试新事物的问题,指出大脑常让人选择安全,但过度规避风险会带来不快乐,并给出了平衡感受与事实、采取成功步骤等应对建议。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“But your brain often tells you to stay safe. It might say, “Don’t bother trying something new.”(但是你的大脑经常告诉你要保持安全。它可能会说,“别费心尝试新事物了。”)”可知,人们避免尝试新事物的主要原因是他们的大脑告诉他们要保持安全。故选A。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“For example, trying a new hobby like painting might feel daunting at first, but it could bring you joy and new skills.(例如,尝试像绘画这样的新爱好一开始可能会让人感到_____,但它能给你带来快乐和新技能。)”后半句的转折词but可知,前后两句为转折关系,后半句说尝试新爱好能带来快乐和新技能,为积极方面,所以前半句应表示尝试新爱好一开始可能让人感到害怕,为消极方面,故daunting在此处的意思是“令人害怕的”。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“For example, driving a car feels safe because we do it every day, but giving a speech in public might make your heart beat fast. Yet the fact shows that car accidents are much more common than getting hurt while speaking.(例如,开车感觉很安全,因为我们每天都开车,但是在公共场合演讲可能会让你的心跳加快。然而,事实表明,车祸比在演讲时受伤要常见得多。)”可知,日常习惯如开车会使我们觉得风险很小,但实际上车祸比在演讲时受伤要常见得多,这说明日常习惯使风险看起来比实际小。故选C。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“If you’re nervous about a test, make a study plan and review each day — this helps you feel more prepared.(如果你对考试感到紧张,制定一个学习计划并每天复习——这会让你感觉准备得更充分。)”可知,作者建议制定学习计划并每天复习来降低考试不及格的风险。故选D。

Slang (俚语) words are specific words or phrases that have a cultural meaning that is different from the basic meaning. For example, when you “keep your cool”, you are not talking about the temperature. You are saying that you will stay calm under pressure.
Cool slang changes all the time. Some slang examples, like “what’s up?”, have been around so long that they have become idioms (习语), or common expressions where the meaning of certain word combinations (组合) are really different from their basic meaning. An example of an idiom is “out of the blue” to show something that happened without warning.
Other slang words are popular, or come from new music, TV, or movies, and are only used for a short time. Knowing how and when to use slang words or college slang will help you connect with and better understand American students.
As a general rule, you can use popular words and phrases now with your friends and classmates, but should use more formal English when speaking to professors and co-workers. If you use today’s slang in more formal settings, like at work, people might see you as rude (粗鲁的) or unprofessional.
Pop culture and youth culture tend to create new slang words and trends (趋势). Historically, that meant that the TV shows, pop and hip-hop music, movies, and video games popular with kids, teens, and young adults influenced today’s slang. While those forms of media still shape new slang words and cool slang, young people now tend to spend more time online — and with that change, the Internet, and especially social media, drive most of American slang in 2025.
While the Internet and pop culture have created common slang words around the country, keep in mind that different areas of the country may use different slang words. Wherever you decide to study, you’ll quickly hear the local slang — and it may even become part of your own vocabulary!
12. Why is slang said to help students connect?
A. It shows respect. B. It breaks language walls.
C. It sounds funny. D. It follows grammar rules.
13. What could happen if you use slang the wrong way?
A. It can show language skills. B. It may confuse friends.
C. It helps people build trust. D. It could seem impolite.
14. What can we know about slang usage across different places?
A. It varies by location. B. It’s only used online.
C. It’s hard to learn. D. It remains unchanged over time.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The History of American Slang
B. Slang: Cultural Meaning and Modern Trends
C. How to Use Slang Correctly in Formal Settings
D. The Differences Between Slang and Idioms
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. B

【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段中“While the Internet and pop culture have created common slang words around the country, keep in mind that different areas of the country may use different slang words.(虽然互联网和流行文化在全国范围内创造了通用的俚语,但要记住,美国不同地区可能会使用不同的俚语)”可知,不同地区的俚语使用情况存在差异,即俚语使用因地点而异。故选A。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并根据第一段中“Slang (俚语) words are specific words or phrases that have a cultural meaning that is different from the basic meaning.(俚语是指具有与基本含义不同的文化含义的特定单词或短语)”可知,文章首先介绍了俚语具有不同于基本含义的文化意义。再根据第五段中“Pop culture and youth culture tend to create new slang words and trends (趋势).(流行文化和青年文化倾向于创造新的俚语词汇和趋势)”以及“While those forms of media still shape new slang words and cool slang, young people now tend to spend more time online — and with that change, the Internet, and especially social media, drive most of American slang in 2025.(虽然这些形式的媒体仍然在塑造新的俚语和很酷的俚语,但年轻人现在倾向于花更多的时间在网上——随着这种变化,到2025年,互联网,尤其是社交媒体,将主导大部分美国俚语)”可知,文章还讲述了流行文化、青年文化以及互联网和社交媒体等对俚语新趋势的影响,即现代俚语的发展趋势。选项B“俚语:文化意义与现代趋势”能概括全文内容,可以作为最佳标题。故选B。

I totally get why you’re confused about balancing study and hobbies — many of us face this problem too! It’s normal to feel stuck when both need time.
Here are a few tips. First, make a weekly schedule: mark study hours for key tasks like homework or exams, and leave small blocks for hobbies, like 30 minutes of painting after finishing homework. Second, set priorities — if there’s a test coming up, cut hobby time temporarily, but don’t give it up entirely. This way, you won’t fall behind in study or lose your joy.
Hope this helps!

4. What does Paragraph 1 tell us about the author?
A. He disliked his primary school. B. He was afraid of male teachers.
C. He had a bad experience in sixth grade. D. He was always nervous on the first day of school.
5. Why did the author choose a seat in the front?
A. To make more friends. B. To avoid trouble and see clearly.
C. To please his teachers. D. To stay closer to teachers.
6. Which words can best describe Mr. H?
A. Supportive and joyful. B. Curious and patient.
C. Honest and brave. D. Traditional and strict.
7. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the last paragraph?
A. To praise his workmates. B. To list the work he had done.
C. To draw reader’s attention. D. To show Mr. H’s influence on him.

Many times we think fear means something risky.
C. They don’t have enough time.
