Not long after the spring break started, Tim and Dave began to feel bored. “Let’s visit Grandma’s new neighbor, Mrs Wilson. She has a dog!” Dave said.
When Tim and Dave arrived at Mrs Wilson’s house, they greeted her and asked, “Can we play with your dog?”
“Sure!” Mrs Wilson said with a smile.
After running after the dog for a while, the boys were tired. Mrs Wilson gave them some orange juice. As they drank it, they saw her take something dark out of a box.
“What’s that?” Dave asked.
“It’s compost (堆肥),” Mrs Wilson explained. “It’s made from kitchen waste, leaves, and grass. It helps plants grow.”
“Can we help?” the boys asked. Mrs Wilson smiled and let them put the compost in her garden.
Over the next few days, the two boys visited Mrs Wilson several times. They helped her plant seeds (种子).
When the spring break ended, the boys went home. Then, when the summer vacation came around, the boys returned to their grandmother’s house. The first thing they did was to visit Mrs.Wilson.
What a surprise! The garden was full of green plants. Summer squash vines (西葫芦藤) covered the garden beds, and carrots grew under the soil (土壤). There was still more work to do, though. The boys helped by pulling up weeds (杂草) and picking vegetables.
“This is fun!” Dave said. “I want to be a gardener.”

Sometimes our friends do things that make us sad, and we might want to talk to them about these things. But how can we make these talks easier? Here is some advice.
It’s important to have good evidence (证据) that there is a problem. The evidence should be something that you both agree on. Once you have evidence, you can explain how the problem affects you. Describe the problem with “I”. Saying “I feel hurt because you spend less time with me.” is less accusatory (谴责的) than saying “You never spend time with me!”
It is necessary to stay calm during the talk. Getting angry could result in a fight. You could tell your friend that you feel a little worried about the talk. You can continue the talk after both of you become calm.
Don’t try to show you are right all the time. It’s important to listen to your friend’s opinion. Don’t just concentrate on showing that you are right. Try to understand how your friend feels.
Listen and plan. You can cut down on arguments by listening carefully to your friend. Many experts say that planning what you want to say helps you to express yourself in a way that won’t cause trouble.
Be realistic. Remember that it’s not possible to solve difficult problems in just one talk. Think about what is possible to achieve in one talk. This will help you set realistic goals.
23. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. How you can find evidence that there is a problem.
B. Why you should talk with a friend about your problem.
C. Which problems between friends are important.

A. Focus on. B. Dream of. C. Fight against. D. Agree with.
25 Which of the following is the writer’s opinion according to the text?
A. It is best to solve difficult problems in one talk.
B. Being a good listener in a talk is very important.
C. It isn’t a good idea to use “I” language in a talk.
D. Stop talking right away if you become calm.
26. What is the main purpose of the text?
A To compare different kinds of friendships.
B. To give advice on healthy communication.
C. To explain why friends fight with each other.
D. To share funny stories about problems in friendships.

The Venus flytrap (捕蝇草) is an amazing meat-eating plant growing in a small area of North Carolina and South Carolina in the United States. While most plants get their “food” from the soil, this clever hunter uses special leaves to catch insects. Each leaf acts like a tiny green mouth with special hairs.
When an insect touches one of the hairs, the leaf is triggered (触发), but it doesn’t close right away. However, if the insect touches a second hair within 20 seconds, the leaf closes quickly and catches the insect inside. This “double-touch rule” stops the plant from wasting energy on things like drops of rain. Even then, the plant waits for the fifth touch from the insect before digesting (消化) it.
The Venus flytrap does not need to eat insects very often. In fact, it can live for weeks without food as long as it gets enough sunlight. On average, it catches two to three insects every month. These meals help the plant to grow, much like a bear living off a few large fish.
▲ A survey by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program in 2019 found 163,951 Venus flytraps in North Carolina and 4,876 in South Carolina. This marked a 93% drop compared with 4.5 million in 1979. By 2016, the plant could only be found in the wild in 71 places. However, only 20 of these could help the plant to grow.
The Venus flytrap shows us how creative nature can be It’s not just a plant—it’s a smart hunter too!
27. What does Paragraph 2 mainly want to show?
A. How the hunting system works.
B. Why the Venus flytrap eats insects.
C. What the Venus flytrap looks like.
D. What the Venus flytrap needs to grow well.
28. Which of the following can be put into “▲” in Paragraph 4?

30. What’s the best title of the text?

After running after the dog for a while, the boys were tired. Mrs Wilson gave them some orange juice. As they drank it, they saw her take something dark out of a box.
“What’s that?” Dave asked.
“It’s compost (堆肥),” Mrs Wilson explained. “It’s made from kitchen waste, leaves, and grass. It helps plants grow.”

The Venus flytrap shows us how creative nature can be. It’s not just a plant—it’s a smart hunter too!
A. Where can people find the plant?
B. Sadly, this amazing plant is in danger.
C. Scientists are interested in this amazing plant.
D. How many Venus flytraps are there in the world?
29. Which of the following questions can be answered by the text?
A. How can people protect the Venus flytrap?
B. Where did people first see the Venus flytrap?
C. Is it possible to grow a Venus flytrap at home?
D. What else can help the Venus flytrap grow besides insects?
