Overview
The Department of Drawings and Prints of The Met takes pride in more than one million
南
drawings, prints, and illustrated books made in Europe and the Americas from around 1400 to
the present day.Because of their number and sensitivity to light, the works can only be
鞍
妇
exhibited for a limited period. To highlight the vast range of works on paper, the department
organizes four exhibitions a year in the Robert Wood Johnson,Jr.Gallery.Each exhibition is
the product of cooperation among curators()and consists of up to 100 objects grouped by
artist,technique,style,period,or subject.
The current exhibition this year explores the ways artists embed()their works with
complex layers of meaning, whether relating stories, ideas, and feelings through symbols,as
in allegory,or suggesting them through line,color,and pattern,as in abstraction.Featured
is Matisse's 1947 series Jazz. Its colorful images bring to mind joyful memories of circuses,
folktales, and travel, and also indicate the dark days in France during World War II.From
the same year,Louise Bourgeois's He Disappeared into Complete Silence, described by the
artist as "a drama of the self",similarly employs allegory and abstraction to create a
psychological self-portrait.Also on view are works about dancers, ranging in date from the
茶
Renaissance to the twentieth century. In these works, emotions and stories unfold through
abstract movements.

At a primary school in Takeo province's Tram Kok District, the students in Grade One
read aloud from their storybooks, copying the movements of animals in the story. With arms
stretched wide like wings, they fly with excitement, their faces lit up with joy as they bring
each sentence to life.
Thanks to an Early Grade Learning initiative, which is to tackle constant learning
challenges among early grade learners of primary education and was introduced by the
Ministry of Education of Cambodia(柬埔寨),with support from UNICEF.
In Cambodia, despite significant progress in education, most students fail to meet the
minimum proficiency()levels in essential skills like reading and mathematics.National
learning assessments for Grade Six in 2021 revealed 45 per cent of students were below basic
proficiency in Cambodian and 75 per cent were below basic proficiency in mathematics.
Now,instead of relying only on traditional textbooks and learning, teachers use
structured and engaging learning tools that make learning both more fun and more effective.
New student books, writing practice books, storybooks, flashcards, and colourful classroom
visuals help students master Cambodian letters and sounds in a step-by-step way.
Alongside the introduction of the new teaching materials, all Grade One teachers,
primary school directors, and school mentors()from Tram Kok District participated in
training on EGR instruction methods, facilitation skills and classroom management.
"There were times when I felt confused about what and how to teach, and I was never
sure if my pronunciation or explanations were correct,"teacher Nop Chankev says."But
now, with systematic lesson plans and well-designed materials,my lessons have a much
clearer flow, and the students are able to follow along much more easily. After completing the
teacher training,I feel I have the ability to prepare and deliver my classes successfully.

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute(RI)have developed a new
sensing technology, called SonicBoom. It's designed to help robots locate and identify crops
using sound rather than cameras like before. The system, still in early development, could
eventually assist agricultural robots with tasks such as pruning(修剪树枝)or detecting ripe
fruit hidden by leaves.
Lee,a Ph.D.student in robotics, explained that the technology can determine the three-
dimensional(3-D)shape of objects through touch, without relying on a camera. This approach
solves a common problem in agricultural robotics, where visual sensors struggle to operate
effectively in environments with heavy leaf cover that obscures both the fruit and the paths
robot arms must take to reach it.
SonicBoom differs from existing sensors by using contact microphones to detect vibrations
when an object is touched.Unlike camera-based touch sensors, which can be weak,or
pressure sensors, which can be expensive to install over large areas, contact microphones are
more durable and can be housed in protective casings. The prototype()consists of six
contact microphones mounted inside a PVC pipe. When the pipe makes contact with an object
such as a branch, the microphones record vibrations, and the system locates the point of
contact with a precision between 0.43 and 2.2 centimeters. The PVC housing also protects
the microphones from damage.
【高三英语卷第3页(共8页)】
6052C
To train the system, the team collected data from 18,000 contacts between the sensor and
a wooden rod.A machine learning model was then used to map the audio signals to specific
contact points. While the current version is designed to detect rigid objects, adjustments to
the set-up could enable it to sense softer targets, such as fruit.
Lee said further research is exploring the potential for the microphone array to identify
objects in addition to locating them.Possible uses outside agriculture could include safety
systems for robots working near people, robots designed for human interaction,or operations
in low-light environments.
28.What is special about SonicBoom compared with previous sensors?
A.It is much cheaper to develop.
B.It can work without using cameras.
C.It will replace agricultural workers.
D.It serves longer in indoor conditions.
29.What does the underlined word "obscures"in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Protects.
B.Damages.
C.Hides.
D.Exposes.
30.What can be inferred about the prototype of SonicBoom from the text?
A.It does well in detecting softer objects.
B.It needs 18,000 contacts to work normally.
C.It gains protection from the PVC housing.
D.It needs more microphones for better precision.
31.What does Lee think of the future of SonicBoom?
A.Promising.
B.Limited.
C.Profitable.
D.Impractical.

According to a new study, harmful microplastics are not only stored in agricultural and
urban soils, but also in forests. The majority of the tiny plastic particles()enter the
forests from the air and stay in the forest soil.
"The microplastics from the atmosphere initially settle on the leaves of the tree crowns,
which scientists refer to as the 'comb-out effect',"explains lead author Dr Collin J.Weber
from the Institute of Applied Geosciences at TU Darmstadt."Then,in deciduous()
forests, the particles are transported to the forest soil by rain or the autumn leaf fall, for
example.”
To conduct their study, researchers from the Department of Soil Mineralogy and Soil
Chemistry collected samples at four forest locations east of Darmstadt,Germany. They
applied a newly refined analytical technique that allowed them to measure the concentration of
microplastics in soil, fallen leaves, and atmospheric deposition(the movement of substances
from the Earth's atmosphere to its surface). The team then used spectroscopic
methods to chemically analyze the samples. In addition, they created a model estimating
atmospheric microplastic inputs since the 1950s,helping them assess how much these inputs
have contributed to overall storage in forest soils.
【高三英语卷第4页(共8页)】
6052C
"Our results indicate that microplastics in forest soils originate primarily from
atmospheric deposition and from leaves falling to the ground, known as litterfall.Other
sources,on the other hand,have only a minor influence,explains Weber."We conclude that
forests are good indicators of atmospheric microplastic pollution and that a high concentration
of microplastics in forest soils indicates a high input-as opposed to direct inputs such as from
fertilizers in agriculture-of particles from the air into these ecosystems."
The study is the first to demonstrate the pollution of forests with microplastics and the
direct link between atmospheric inputs and the storage of microplastics in forest soil,as these
issues had not previously been scientifically investigated. The results provide an important
basis for assessing the environmental risks posed by microplastics in the air and soil. The
findings may highlight the global transport of microplastics in the air and thus also in the air
we breathe.
32.What does Weber want to tell us in paragraph 2?
A.The meaning of a new concept.
B.The features of deciduous forests.
C.Why trees can consume plastics.
D.How microplastics enter forest soil.
33.What did the researchers do in the study?
A.They got involved in forest restoration programs.
B.They collected random samples of agricultural soils.
C.They investigated atmospheric microplastic inputs.
D.They recommended redefining atmospheric deposition.
34.What can be learned about the findings of the study?
A.They break the tie between forests and plastics.
B.They have previously been scientifically proved.
C.They go against the global transport of microplastics.
D.They might contribute to evaluation of environmental threats.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Forests Are Raining Plastics
B.Forest Soils Are Decreasing
C.Will Forests Provide Clean Air?
D.Can Forests Fight Microplastics?
