Teenagers have their own TV channels, websites and magazines. So what about books?
Last year one publisher, Martins, started publishing a series called Waves. We spoke to the director Julia Smith. She explained, "Teenage fiction has been published since the 1970s but publishers have never been very successful in getting teenagers to buy and read books. Now they're realizing that teenagers are just older children, but are not adults either. They are often not interested in adult fiction. For this series we are looking for new writers who write especially for teenagers.
Athene Gorr's novel was published in the series last year and is selling well. Its title is The Purple Ring. She says, "The important thing is to encourage teenagers to pick up your book. I'm a new writer. Although I've got an unusual name which people might remember, nobody knows it yet! But my book has a fantastic cover which makes people want to look inside. Then they realize what an excellent story it is!"
And what do teenagers themselves think about the series? We talked to Sophie Clarke, aged 15. She said? "I've read a few books in the Waves series. They say they are for 14-19 year olds and I agree with that. We're not interested in the same things as people in their twenties and thirties. I like them and I think they look really good too. The only thing is that because bookshops put them in the children section, lots of teenagers won't find them so they may not do very well. And it's a shame there's no such series as I think lots of teenagers, especially boys, might buy."
4. What can we infer from Paragraph 2? ______
A. The Waves series are suitable for adults.
B. It is necessary to publish books aimed at teenagers.
C. Teenagers are more interested in reading nowadays.
D. Teenagers should be encouraged to read.
5. What makes The Purple Ring catch people's eye? ______
A. Its writer.
B. Its cover.
C. Its price.
D. Its title.
6. What do we know about the Waves series? ______
A. They have attractive covers.
B. They are about real facts.
C. They are popular with teenage boys.
D. They are wrongly placed in the children section.
7. What does the author intend to do with the passage? ______
A. To compare different series of teenage fiction.
B. To give information about a new series of books.
C. To encourage more writers to create fictions for teenagers.
D. To explain why teenage fiction is easier to write than adult fiction.
C
Cristina Mittermeier, a pioneering (开创性的) photographer, cares about nature and wants to protect it. Her lens (镜头) inspires action and offers hope.
Mittermeier’s love for nature began early. This love led her to study marine (海洋的) biology, a field she focused on with the dream of studying whales at first. But soon she saw the damaging effects of industrial fishing, which caused a change in her career (职业). “What I wanted to do was try my best to call on the whole world to understand how easily the oceans can be destroyed.” she explained. Science, while necessary, felt not enough to influence a larger population. Photography became her chosen tool.
She has invented her work a form of “visual medicine”, balancing the seriousness of environmental problems with a call to action. Her ideas for helping nature are practical and include listening to what local people know and how they live with the environment.
Mittermeier’s latest book Hope shows her efforts in environmental protection. By working with people from all over the world to create the book, she turned it into a group effort instead of just her own. The book’s 130 photographs, covering twenty years, are displayed (展示) not by geography or species, but by themes that tell the story of life on our planet.
Through her work, Mittermeier continually attaches importance to the role of youth in reshaping the planet’s future, Visual storytelling, she argues, is likely to encourage young people to take action quickly — not through fear but by directing attention to finding means of solving problems and celebrating victories (胜利), however small.
Cristina Mittermeier’s life shows the great power of art with a purpose. Her lens catches not just what is but what could be, urging us all to act toward a future where people and nature can live peacefully.
8. What caused a change in Mittermeier’s career?
A. Her interest in nature. B. Her love for photography.
C. The power of science. D. The alarming scene of industrial fishing.
9. Which of the following can best describe Mittermeier?
A. Creative and inspiring B. Curious and independent.
C. Hardworking and calm. D. Energetic and humorous.
10. What can we learn about Hope?
A. It focuses on present-day photos. B. It talks about the same species.
C. It is created through shared efforts. D. It is a story book for children.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Cristina Mittermeier: Photography Inspires Action
B. Cristina Mittermeier: Dreams Come True
C. Environmental Protection: Ocean Has Artistic Beauty
D. Environmental Protection: Measures Come First
D
Each of us individually is the accumulated product of thousands of generations that have come before us in an unbroken line. Our culture and technology today are also the result of thousands of years of accumulated, and remixed cultural knowledge. Cumulative culture allowed human populations to build on and recombine the solutions of prior generations and to develop new complex solutions to problems very quickly, thus helping humans to adapt to a diversity of environments and challenges. However, it is unclear when cumulative culture first developed during ancient human evolution.
In order to explore the origin of cumulative culture, Perreault analyzed changes in the complexity of stone tool manufacturing techniques across the past 3.3 million years of the archaeological record. As a baseline for the complexity of stone tool technologies achievable without cumulative culture, Perreault first analyzed technologies used by nonhuman primates, such as chimpanzees (大猩猩). He then analyzed stone tool manufacturing experiments involving inexperienced human flintknapping (燧石加工技术) and randomized flaking (石片打制技术). Perreault assessed the complexity of the stone tool technologies by counting the number of steps (procedural units, or PUs) involved in each tool-making sequence.
The results suggested that from around 3.3 to 1.8 million years ago, stone tool-making sequences remained within the baseline range(1 to 6 PUs). From around 1.8 million to 600,000 years ago, making sequences began to overlap with and even slightly exceed the baseline complexity (4 to 7 PUs). However, after around 600,000 years ago, the complexity of making sequences increased rapidly (5 to 18PUs). “From around-600,000 years ago. ancient human populations started relying on unusually complex technologies, and we only see rapid increases in complexity after that time as well,” said Perreault.
Tool-assisted food-hunting may have been the motive for the earliest beginning of the evolution of cumulative culture. Early ancient humans,3.4 to 2 million years ago, likely relied on strategies that require tools — like accessing meat, marrow and organs — leading to changes in brain size, lifespan and biology that set the stage for cumulative culture.
12. What does cumulative culture refer to according to the text?
A. Emphasizing individual development.
B. Paying attention to reforming social structure.
C. Adapting to a changing living condition step by step.
D. Building up technological improvements over generations.
13. What’s Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. How Perreault conducted the research.
B. What the baseline of cumulative culture was.
C. How important stone tool technologies were.
D. Why Perreault chose chimpanzees for the study.
14. Which of the following is true about what happened around 600,000 years ago?
A. The population of the earth increased sharply.
B. Tool-making sequences remained unchanged.
C. The ancestors began to make stone tools.
D. The technology reached a turning point.
15. Why are strategies that require tools mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To indicate the significance of common culture.
B. To show the result of human brains’ changes.
C. To illustrate the motive of cumulative culture.
D. To stress the eating habits of human ancestors.
