Edward was a professional football player, but in 2017 he had an accident during a training. After that, he couldn’t move his body from the shoulders down.
Doctors told him that he’d probably never walk again, but Edward didn’t believe this. He had married a woman and he said that she was the main reason he wanted to get better. He spent six days staring at his toes (脚趾) and trying to make them move—and finally, he succeeded! This was the start of a long journey.
While in hospital, Edward met Paul, a man in his late thirties. Doctors had also told Paul he would never walk again, but Edward encouraged him not to give up and six months later, Paul told Edward he was walking with a stick.
Only a year after his accident, Edward climbed the highest mountain in Wales. Since then, he has also climbed a 6,500-meter mountain in Nepal and he said that after each big climb, he noticed his body could do new movements.
Two years later, 31-year-old Edward climbed 8,848 meters, the same height as the world’s highest mountain, by going up and down his parents’ stairs 2,783 times. When he finished, he told a news reporter he loved it although it sometimes was “painful” and “boring”. He also raised £46,000 for charity.
Edward hopes his story can help people. That’s why he started his own charity, M2M, which aims to support “people facing challenges in life.”

Overthinking is natural but can cause problems. It means thinking about the same thing again and again leading you to see things in the worst possible way. This is because our brains are always looking for dangers so that they can make plans to deal with those dangers and keep us safe.
Imagine you are going to give a speech the next day. The night before, you spend a lot of time thinking about the possible mistakes whether you’re prepared enough. Or maybe everyone will laugh at you if you lose. Well, you might be overthinking.
Some people believe that overthinking may be helpful because it helps us look at a problem from every possible direction and get ready for what might happen. However, research suggests that overthinking can make us stressed, worried and unhappy.
What’s more, overthinking might create problems with how you get along with others. As you think the worst, make incorrect guesses, or worry about every little thing others do and say, you might misunderstand what they mean.
So, instead of sitting and thinking about a problem again and again, you can pay attention to something else instead of the problem itself. Your brain might find better ways to solve the problem while you’re doing something fun, like gardening, watching a comedy or even sleeping.
Also, when you find yourself overthinking, challenge these thoughts. Ask yourself if they will be sure to happen and think about other possibilities. It can be hard at first, after some practice, you will behave better and better.
9. What does overthinking mean?
A. Thinking about future things only.
B. Thinking about different things quickly.
C. Thinking about positive things all the time.
D. Thinking about the same thing over and over.
10. If you are a person who is always overthinking, what might you think if you lose a basketball game?
A. I believe I will do better next time if I practice harder.
B. I will talk with my coach to find out why I lost the game.
C. My teachers will not like me and the classmates will laugh at me.
D. Although I lost the game, I will treat myself to something delicious.
11. How does the writer support his idea in Paragraph 5?
A By listing numbers. B. By giving examples.
C. By raising questions. D. By showing pictures.
12. What can we do when we find ourselves overthinking?
A. Keep thinking about it. B. Ignore it and do nothing.
C. Question the thoughts. D. Talk to everyone about it.
D
①We spend most of our time with friends whom we like. Well, who would stay with a person one doesn’t like? What kind of people are welcomed by others, then?
②There are people that naturally attract you. By being with them just once, you start to like them. If you wonder why they attract people and want to be a person like them, you should learn how to develop the traits (特点) that they have.
③Firstly, everybody wants to be happy, and nobody wants to spend their time with a sad person. Well, you see, there is what you call mood linkage. If you are with a cheerful person, you are more likely to be happy. When people choose to spend time with a person, they are more likely to choose those who are joyful. So if you are a happy person, many people will want to spend their time with you.
④Next, everybody needs someone to give encouragement to them, because sometimes in our lives we experience failure, sadness, problems and other bad things. So if you always choose to cheer others up with encouraging words or actions, they will be willing to spend time with you.
⑤Lastly, you are not a friend if you don’t lend a hand to your friends when they need help. You should always be helpful to them, no matter what it costs, because when you need help, they will be there for you, too.
⑥It feels good if people want to be your friends because of your character. So if you want to attract friends, I suggest you learn to develop these traits.
13. Why does the writer raise two questions in Paragraph 1?
A. To express the writer’s strong feelings.
B. To show an important research result.
C. To introduce a way to make friends.
D. To draw readers’ attention to the text.
14. What does “mood linkage” mean in the text?
A. Joy can spread among people. B. Happiness will change over time.
C. Sadness is nearly unavoidable. D. More people bring more cheer.
15. Which of the following shows the right structure of the passage? (①=Paragraph 1, …)
A. B. C. D.
16. What is the best title of the text?
A. How to be an attractive person. B. How to introduce one’s traits.
C. How to live a happy life. D. How to find a real friend.

Grandpa kept dropping food on his shirt. Other diners watched him in an unfriendly way, while Jeff was at peace.
