Ⅱ. Grammar and Vocabulary(共20分,每题1分)
Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passages coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Will Robots Take Your Job in the Future?
In 2013, researchers at Oxford University did a study on the future of work. They concluded that almost one in every two jobs have a high risk of ____21____ (automate) by machines. Machine learning is the technology that’s responsible for most of this situation. It’s the most powerful branch of artificial intelligence. It allows machines to learn from data and imitate some of the things ____22____ humans can do.
Machine learning started making its way into industry in the early 1990s. It started with relatively simple tasks. It started with things ____23____ assessing credit risk from loan applications, sorting the mail by reading handwritten characters from zip codes. Over the past few years, we ____24____ (make) dramatic breakthroughs. Machine learning is now capable of far, far ____25____ (complex) tasks. In 2012, Kaggle challenged its community ____26____ (build) an algorithm (算法) that could grade high-school essays. The winning algorithms were able to match the grades given by human teachers.
Now, ____27____ (give) the right data, machines are going to outperform humans at tasks like this. A teacher ____28____ read 10,000 essays over a 40-year career. A machine can read millions of essays within minutes. We have no chance of competing against machines on frequent, high-volume tasks.
But there are things we can do that machines can’t do. ____29____ machines have made very little progress is in dealing with novel situations. They can’t handle things they haven’t seen many times before. The fundamental limitation of machine learning is that it needs to learn from large volumes of past data. Now, humans don’t. We have the ability to connect seemingly different threads to solve problems we’ve never seen before. Machines cannot compete with us when it comes to dealing with novel situations, and this _____30_____ (put) a fundamental limit on the human tasks that machines will automate.
Section B

Stepney Words
Chris Searle’s journey as a teacher at Sir John Cass Secondary School in Stepney, East London, began in 1970. He was driven by a strong ___31___ to the area and a progressive vision for education. Having completed a postgraduate thesis (论文) on Isaac Rosenberg, a poet from the East End, Searle saw Stepney as a place filled with potential, in spite of its ___32___ as a hopeless community. He believed that education, particularly through poetry, could transform the lives of his students, many of whom came from low-income, high-risk backgrounds.
Searle’s ___33___ approach conflicted with the traditional views of the school’s governors and teachers. At a time when discipline was harsh and students were often regarded as troublemakers, Searle viewed these ___34___ teenagers as individuals with untapped potential. He believed that poetry could unlock their creativity and help them express their experiences, offering them a sense of hope and purpose.
His belief in poetry’s power materialized in the creation of Stepney Words, a collection of his students’ poems. Despite the ___35___ from some staff who thought his methods too liberal, the poems gained attention, and some of them were even published in The Sun newspaper by March 1971. The ___36___ gave the students a voice, but it also drew criticism from school officials who thought the poems were “too gloomy.”
Searle’s progressive ideals led to his ___37___ from the school. However, his students, ___38___ by the decision, organized a protest led by 16-year-old Zenaida de la Cruz. The entire school quickly ___39___, standing together with Searle. On his return to the school, he found 800 students standing outside the gates in the rain, showing their support.
Though the government eventually allowed him to return, he decided to leave the school in 1974. His commitment to education did not end there — he continued to teach around the world and published his own poetry, leaving behind a(n) ___40___ impact of optimism, innovation, and faith in the power of education to bring about change.
Ⅲ. Reading comprehension:(共45分;41-55每题1分;56-70每题2分)
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage, there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Organizations and societies rely on fines and rewards to control people’s self-interest in the service of the common good. The ____41____ of a ticket keeps drivers in line, and the promise of a bonus inspires high performance. But incentives (激励) can also ____42____, discouraging the very behaviour they’re meant to encourage.
A generation ago, Richard Titmuss claimed that paying people to donate blood ____43____ the supply. Economists were skeptical, citing a lack of scientific evidence. But since then, new data and models have prompted a sea change in how economists think about incentives — showing, among other things, that Titmuss was right in so many cases that businesses should ____44____.
Experimental economists have found that offering to pay women for donating blood decreases the number willing to donate by almost half, and that letting them contribute the payment to charity ____45____ the effect. Dozens of recent experiments show that rewarding self-interest with economic incentives can have the opposite result when they destroy what Adam Smith called “the moral sentiments (情绪).” Psychology here has escaped blackboard economists, but it will be no surprise to people in business: When we take a job or buy a car, we are not only trying to get stuff — we are also trying to be a certain kind of person. ____46____, people desire to be respected by others as ethical and dignified. And they don’t want to be taken for losers. Rewarding blood donations may not serve the intended purpose because it suggests that the donor is less interested in being ____47____ than in making a dollar. Incentives also run into trouble when they signal that the employee ____48____ the employee or is greedy. Close supervision of workers coupled with ____49____ for performance is textbook economics, but it can lead to the depression of employees.
Perhaps most important, incentives affect what our actions signal, whether we’re being self-interested or civic-minded, manipulated or trusted, and they can imply — sometimes wrongly — what ____50____ us. Fines or public criticism that appeal to our moral sentiments by signaling social disapproval (think of littering) can be highly effective. But incentives go wrong when they ____51____ or brake our ethical sensibilities.
This does not mean it’s ____52____ to appeal to self- interested and ethical motivations at the same time — just that efforts to do so often fail. ____53____, policies support socially valued ends not only by controlling self- interest but also by encouraging public-spiritedness. The small tax on plastic grocery bags passed by law in Ireland in 2002 that ____54____ their virtual elimination appears to have had such an effect. It caused offenders ____55____ while conveying a moral message. Carrying a plastic bag joined wearing a fur coat in the gallery of outdated and socially unacceptable practice.

(A)
Dialects are a cultural resource and the collection of ordinary people’s wisdom. They promote the culture of a region. When an area’s dialect dies out, it means the failure of the local culture, such as folk arts. Dialects are also an essential material to study the history of a country’s language and its evolution, making up for lack of documents. They are human memories whose extinction cannot be reversed.
According to UNESCO, nearly 7,000 languages and dialects worldwide are facing extinction, falling out of use at the rate of about one every two weeks. In China, there are over 120 languages at risk of extinction. More than half of them is spoken by fewer than 10,000 people.
Xu Kaifei, a new media journalist who has a 7-year-old son, finds that Hainanese is not being spoken by the younger generation: “Children do not use the dialect, and some can’t even understand it.” So he started to teach his son the language word by word, uploading videos on social media platforms for viewers interested in Hainanese.
Due to education and work, where standard Chinese is used, many young people who spoke dialects have turned to standard Chinese. Some think speaking only a dialect is an obstacle to finding jobs in cities, where standard Chinese is widely used. So they stop using their native tongue. In many families, the parents guide the switch for their children.
To research dialects, Zhao Rixin, a professor studying dialects at the Beijing Language and Culture University, has visited over 100 places, mostly villages. “Villages are the best sites as their dialects are well preserved, thanks to the small-scale input of outsiders,” he said. His last survey was done in a village in Chengde, Hebei Province in north China, whose dialect is close to standard Chinese.
The dialects in north and northeast China have been better preserved than in other places, he said. The former is similar to standard Chinese, so the local people regard their language as standard Chinese. The dialects of northeast China are popular due to their culture, tradition and economic development. The development of the media and genres (类型) of art has also enhanced people’s pride in this region’s language.
56. The figures used in paragraph 2 are intended to ______
A. illustrate the diversity of dialects across China.
B. reveal the serious problem that dialects are disappearing.
C. propose a possible solution to protect endangered dialects.
D. explain why so many dialects are threatened with extinction.
57. What problem did Xu Kaifei (in Para.3) find about the children?
A. They almost abandon Hainanese. B. They don’t have classes in Hainanese.
C. They often visit social media platforms. D. They don’t learn standard Chinese at school.
58. What does “the switch” in (Para.4) refer to?
A. Speaking a dialect fluently despite their education background.
B. Finding ideal jobs in cities with their good language ability.
C. Giving up the native tongue for the standard Chinese.
D. Taking seriously parents’ advice on language learning
59. Which of the following is a reason why dialects are better preserved in north China?
A. The economic development there is not satisfactory.
B. The dialect there resembles the standard Chinese.
C. Few traditions have been well kept there.
D. Few outsiders have come to live there.

Wheat was among the first plants to be domesticated and is now the most widespread crop in the world. It thus sounds unlikely there would be much left to learn about what makes it so popular. Yet, some 12,000 years after relations between people and wheat began, a wheat plant has been caught doing something unexpected. It helped itself to some much-needed phosphorus (磷) when its leaves received a coating of desert dust.
The plant (or, rather, plants) in question were in the care of Avner Gross of the Ben Gurion University of the Negev, in Israel. As Dr Gross told this year’s meeting of the American Geophysical Union, his study was inspired by a hike he had taken near Neve Shalom, his home village in the Judean Hills. On these, he often noticed plant leaves completely covered in dust that had been carried there by sand storms from the Sahara Desert.
It occurred to him that this dust might not be the light-blocking substance it appeared at first sight. It could, on the contrary, be beneficial because of the growth-enhancing elements such as phosphorus which it contained. Until then, botanists had assumed that phosphorus in dust landing on a plant was of little value, because it is locked up in a mineral called apatite. This makes it unavailable for absorption. Dr Gross, however, reasoned that plants which had evolved near deserts, the source of almost all naturally occurring dust in the atmosphere, might well have evolved to exploit it.
He and two colleagues, therefore started experimenting with a pair of species, wheat and chickpeas (the world’s 17th most planted crop), that both came originally from the Middle East. As a control, they also raised some maize (玉米), a plant from the Americas that evolved in far less dusty surroundings.
First, having established them as seedlings (秧苗), they starved their supply of phosphorus until signs of deficiency such as yellow leaves appeared. Then they spread desert dust on the leaves of half of them, while taking steps to stop any of it reaching the soil. After this, though the dust-covered maize continued to suffer from phosphorus deficiency, the wheat and chickpea plants grew to more than double the size of their undusted lab-mates. What is more, these species were clearly ready for the dust’s arrival. As soon as a lack of phosphorus announced itself, two things happened. Their leaves became hairier, and therefore better at capturing dust. And those leaves also started secreting acid fluids that could dissolve any incoming apatite, assisting phosphorus’s absorption.
63. Why is phosphorus much needed by some plants?
A. It is common in America. B. It can be found in the dust.
C. It helps them to grow well. D. It has some unexpected effects.
64. Before Dr Gross, botanists considered phosphorus in dust landing on a plant useless because they thought _______.
A. plants couldn’t take it in B. desert plants didn’t need it
C. it worked by blocking light D. it could work well with apatite
65. The word “deficiency” (in Para.5) is closest in meaning to _______ .
A. Over-consumption B. disadvantage C. inefficiency D. shortage
66. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Chickpea evolved better than domesticated wheat.
B. Sandstorm dust might contain unknown chemicals.
C. Maize couldn’t produce apatite-dissolving substance.
D. Plants couldn’t absorb enough nutrition from the soil.
Section C
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
With just over 500 different species of shark classified and a further two dozen waiting to be formally scientifically named, shark classification is not for the faint-hearted. ____67____
Sporting a wide, flattened head that is uniquely shaped like a double-headed hammer, it’s not hard to see how these sharks got their names. The eyes and openings at the end of the nose are located at either end of the “hammer” — or cephalofoil, as it’s technically called.
____68____ While undoubtedly giving the sharks extra lift, the cephalofoil may also help them make sharper turns in the water. The widely spaced eyes allow for effective three-D vision, while the head’s broad shape also houses a sense organ operating like an underwater metal detector, it helps the predators to detect prey hidden on or just under the sea-floor deposit. Another possible function for the hammerhead’s head is to help pin down any slippery prey unearthed from the sea.
Though widespread, the scalloped(扇形的)hammerhead, one of the nine species of hammerhead, is most commonly encountered in the Hammerhead Triangle in the eastern Pacific. While it can be relatively easily observed at a number of sites, particularly around seamounts, there are only a few places where it gathers in large numbers. ____69____
At locations such as the Hammerhead Triangle, numbers can reach into the hundreds or even, on occasion, thousands. As the sharks tend to assemble relatively close to the water’s surface, this is one ocean spectacle for divers.
With its fins(鱼翅)highly prized as the key ingredient in shark-fin soup, it’s no surprise that the scalloped hammerhead has experienced a dramatic population decline. Any sharks caught are often subjected to the frankly horrible treatment of ‘finning’, whereby fins are sliced off and the bodies thrown overboard.
However, with hammerheads consistently ranking among the world’s top underwater wildlife attractions, shark tourism presents a sustainable alternative to fishing them into extinction. ____70____.
A. Added to this, the shark is often the victim of fishing bycatch.
B. The explanation behind the shape of the hammerhead’s head has long been debated.
C. But there is one group that everyone would immediately recognize: the hammerheads.
D. The scalloped hammerhead can be distinguished by the V-shaped cut at its cephalofoil.
E. These groups of sharks tend to consist mostly of females, with the males remaining out in deeper waters.
F. Doubtless, those enjoying this magnificent spectacle agree that the fins look far better on the sharks than they do floating in a bowl of soup.
Ⅳ. Summary Writing(共10分)

Fiction Reading
For many people, nothing is more enjoyable than spending a whole afternoon reading a good novel. But are novels simply a pleasant way to pass the time, or could it be true that reading fiction actually benefits our lives?
One of the joys of fiction is that it can take us to places that our lives won’t. It can transport us to 17th-century France, or to war-torn Germany. It can take us to a future world in which artificial intelligence takes over and books are banned, or a fantasy world where people bail it out for food. Fiction can also introduce us to a whole range of people that we haven’t yet met. And this, according to Carrie Oates, a novelist and academic, is perhaps the real benefit of stories.
In one of Oates’ studies, participants were asked to read either a short story by Chekhov or a version of the story in documentary form. Those who were given the fictionalized version were found to be more likely to sympathize with the characters, thus going through greater changes in personality.
In another study, she showed participants photos of the eyes of people who were feeling and thinking different things. The people who read fiction were better able to interpret those thoughts and feelings than those who didn’t. Oates explains that when we read fiction, we enter into the minds of the characters. We think about why they behave in a certain way, and what they are likely to do next. Just as we might become more knowledgeable about psychology and astronomy if we read about psychology and astronomy, we get better at this kind of social thinking if we read fiction. This improves our understanding of the thoughts and feelings of those around us in real life.

【答案】 A Survey on Senior 3 Students’ Career Planning Awareness and Preparation
As part of our research study, we conducted a comprehensive survey among all senior 3 students at Mingqi High School regarding their career planning awareness and preparation. Here is what we found: 40% of students have clear career plans. 30% have gotten advice about careers. Only 20% have tried job-related activities outside school.
Several factors may account for this situation. Firstly, the heavy academic workload leaves limited time for career exploration. Secondly, there’s a lack of systematic career education programs in our school curriculum. Thirdly, many students tend to focus solely on immediate academic performance rather than long-term career development.
Aiming to address these issues, we propose the following suggestions. Schools should incorporate career education into regular curriculum and organize more career experience activities. Students should actively seek career information and participate in relevant practical activities. Parents and society should also provide more support and opportunities for career exploration. Only by implementing these measures can we create a supportive environment for students’ career planning.
