Four female pioneers from different fields will soon appear on some US coins. Generations to come will look at the coins bearing these designs and be reminded of what can be accomplished with determination and a desire to improve opportunities for all.
Anna May Wong
Wong was the first Chinese American film star in Hollywood, appearing in more than 60 movies. Her coin shows her resting her head on her hand, surrounded by the round lights of a stage.
A film critic once noted that Wong’s performances often carried a sense of longing, as if she was yearning for a Hollywood that fully accepted her.
Maya Angelou
The late writer and social activist has already received a presidential Medal of Freedom, won a National Book Award, and published more than 30 bestselling poems. Angelou’s coin will show her with her arms lifted, in front of a bird in flight and a rising sun. Those images are inspired by her poetry and symbolic of the way she lived. Scholars analyze that her works frequently explored themes of resilience (恢复) and hope, mirroring her own life journey marked by overcoming hardships.
Sally Ride
The late astronaut, physicist and educator is best known as the first American woman — and youngest American — to travel to space. After her retirement, she devoted herself to inspiring young people, particularly girls, in science, engineering, technology and math. Her coin design shows her standing next to a window on a spaceship, which is inspired by what she once said. “When I wasn’t working, I was usually at a window looking down at Earth.”
Wilma Mankiller
Mankiller was the first elected female chief of the Cherokee Nation in 1987, and is celebrated as an activist for Native American and women’s rights. Under her leadership, infant death rate declined and educational levels rose. Mankiller’s coin shows her in a traditional dress in front of the seven-pointed star of the Cherokee Nation. Historians emphasize that her leadership style was both inclusive (包容的) and decisive, bringing about tangible (明确的) changes for her people.
1. What can we infer about Anna May Wong from the passage?
A. Her performances lacked emotional depth.
B. She was widely accepted by Hollywood from the start.
C She faced challenges in gaining full acceptance in Hollywood.
D. She starred in fewer than 50 movies throughout her career.
2. Why are the images of a bird in flight and a rising sun chosen for Maya Angelou’s coin?
A. They represent her love for nature.
B. They are symbols of her favorite hobbies.
C. They were randomly selected by coin designers.
D. They reflect the themes in her poetry and her life attitude.
3. Which of the following best describes Wilma Mankiller’s leadership?

Mr Dan Marcanruono, known as Mr Marc, teaches philosophy and moral thinking at a high school. Before becoming an educator, Mr Marc worked in healthcare consulting, drove a delivery truck for a laundry company and worked temporarily in business development. Teaching wasn’t something he had seriously considered until he joined the Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. As part of his scholarship, he was required to teach courses in creative writing to college students. “I don’t think I would have gotten into teaching if I hadn’t gone to that school.” he said.
From his teaching experiences, Mr Marc quickly realized that teaching requires more than just knowing the subject. One moment that reshaped his view of teaching occurred during his first year when a student lost his father. The experience made him realize how essential it is to create an environment that assists students facing personal challenges.
When transitioning from teaching college to high school, Mr Marc admitted that he struggled with constantly having to adapt and come up with new ideas. “Getting accustomed to the workload and curriculum when it’s all so new to me has been one of the biggest challenges so far,” he explained.
Mr Marc believes authority doesn’t come from simply having a title. “There’s a lot I can be doing to make students feel confident and capable in the classroom,” he said. By encouraging a sense of teamwork and mutual respect, he aims to create an environment where students feel valued. “I try to get to know my students and then take time during class to talk to them individually,” he added. This approach helps students feel noticed.
“My ultimate goal as a teacher is to help students start to question the things they take for granted or the things they just assume are true about the world,” said Mr Marc, who describes his teaching journey as a blessing. He acknowledges that his path to teaching was unexpected, but he’s grateful for the experiences he has come across.
4. What can we learn about Mr Marc before he became a teacher?
A. He worked in various fields. B. He specialized in creative writing.
C. He taught at a university full-time. D. He had always dreamed of being a teacher.
5. What made Mr Marc change his view on teaching?
A. His scholarship requirement. B. A student’s personal tragedy.
C. His Master’s program in creative writing. D. The difference between college and high school teaching.
6. Which of the following is a challenge Mr Marc faced when teaching high school?
A. Building authority among students. B. Helping students facing personal challenges.
C. Adapting to the new workload and curriculum. D. Making students feel valued in class.
7. What is Mr Marc’s ultimate goal as a teacher?
A. To help students develop critical thinking. B. To make students feel confident in class.
C. To encourage teamwork among students. D. To get to know each student individually.
A 5. B 6. C 7. A

Self-confidence is trusting in our abilities or qualities. It’s usually seen as a good thing. But is it possible that we might benefit from a little less confidence in our beliefs?
For many years, Dr. Mark Leary, a neuroscientist at Duke University in Durham, N.C. , has studied the role of people’s beliefs in their behavior. He found overconfidence is very common, especially when it comes to what people believe to be true, and can lead us to disastrous decisions. In 1986, NASA believed that the risk of loss for any space flight was roughly 1 in 100,000. It was an overconfident belief and might have led to the explosion of the Challenger. The good news is that there’s a “vaccine (疫苗)” for overconfidence, and that’s what scientists call “intellectual humility”— recognizing that your beliefs could be wrong.
A survey of 144 college students to measure their intellectual humility found that students who saw their thinking could be wrong tended to be more curious and more likely to seek out new knowledge. They ended up knowing more at the end of the day. But does it actually help you beyond that?
To find out more, Dr. Tenelle Porter at Ball State University conducted a series of studies with high school students. She found that students with intellectual humility were much more likely to test themselves to see whether they really understood the material and seek out potential holes in their understanding. When they got test scores, they’d change their study strategics to improve their performance and master the material for the next test.
Students who didn’t see their knowledge could be wrong might instead just sail through their studying and wouldn’t stop to ask themselves if they truly understood what they read, heard, or did. Such students thought they got a subject down pat, but when asked to explain it on a test, they found they didn’t actually understand as much as they had thought.
Although it might be good for you, researchers recognize that questioning your beliefs can be truly hard. Still, it’s important to remember that questioning beliefs isn’t always about replacing old ones with new ones. If you find it hard to question a belief, try taking “baby steps.”
8. Why does the author mention the explosion of the Challenger?
A. To express his sorrow for the loss.
B. To stress the high risk of space flights.
C. To show the result of wrong operation.
D. To give an example of overconfidence.
9. What do we know about intellectual humility according to Porter’s research?
A. It urged students to gain recognition.
B. It encouraged students to take exams.
C. It helped students to adjust learning methods.
D. It motivated students to memorize knowledge.
10. What do the underlined words “got a subject down pat” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Fully mastered a subject. B. Put great effort into a subject
C. Really enjoyed a subject. D. Benefited a lot from a subject.
11. What will probably be discussed in the following paragraphs?
A. Why questioning our belief is hard.
B. Why intellectual humility is helpful.
C. How to become a confident person.
D. How to practice intellectual humility.
D 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据第二段第二至第四句“He found overconfidence is very common, especially when it comes to what people believe to be true, and can lead us to disastrous decisions. In 1986, NASA believed that the risk of loss for any space flight was roughly 1 in 100,000. It was an overconfident belief and might have led to the explosion of the Challenger.
根据第四段第二、三句“She found that students with intellectual humility were much more likely to test themselves to see whether they really understood the material and seek out potential holes in their understanding. When they got test scores, they’d change their study strategics to improve their performance and master the material for the next test. (她发现,智力谦逊的学生更有可能去检验自己是否真正理解了学习材料,并寻找自己理解上的漏洞。当他们看到考试成绩时,他们会调整学习策略,以提高学习表现,并掌握好材料为下一次考试做准备)”可知,智力谦逊这种特质会使学生及时反思自己的学习,相应调整学习方法。故选C项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段第二句“Such students thought they got a subject down pat, but when asked to explain it on a test, they found they didn’t actually understand as much as they had thought. (这些学生以为自己对某个科目got down pat,但在考试中被要求解释时,他们发现自己的理解并没有自己想象的那么多)”可知,学生们在考试之前应是对自己比较自信,认为自己对该相关知识十分了解,或已经全会了,但到考场答题时,才发现自己会的不如原本所认为的那么多。由此可知,got a subject down pat应是“对某科目了解很多”或“对某科目完全掌握”之意。故选A项。
根据第二段最后一句“The good news is that there’s a “vaccine (疫苗)” for overconfidence, and that’s what scientists call “intellectual humility”— recognizing that your beliefs could be wrong. (好消息是,过度自信有一种“疫苗”,科学家称之为“智力谦逊”——即认识到你的信念可能是错误的)”及全文最后一句“If you find it hard to question a belief, try taking “baby steps.” (如果你觉得很难质疑一种信念,可以尝试迈出“一小步”)”可知,最后一句中所说的“question a belief”即前文所说的“recognizing that your beliefs could be wrong”,也就是第二段最后一句引号中所言的“智力谦逊”。全文最后一句又说,“可以尝试迈出‘一小步’”。由此推知,所谓的“一小步”究竟该怎么做,会在下文进行介绍,即如何练习做到“智力谦虚”。故选D项。
D
Poetry is maybe the most human of all human endeavors, which is thought least likely to be taken over by AI. But according to a recent study, this is not so, as non-experts rate AI poetry higher than poetry written by humans.
The researchers chose 10 famous poets: Samuel Butler, Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare... They then asked ChatGTP 3.5 to write poems in the style of each poet. And they asked the participants, who were not experts, to rate the work on 14 scales, like profundity, rhythm, originality, imagery, beauty, emotion, and overall quality.
What was surprising indeed is that most of these non-experts, when they were not told whether a poem was composed by AI or by a human systematically, ranked the ones that were actually written by AI higher than the ones written by humans.
What does this experiment show exactly? The researchers are very clear that these findings were limited to non-experts. The research team’s own explanation has to do with participants’ lack of expertise, concluding that these non-experts preferred the AI poetry because it was less complicated, and more straightforward
This must be part of the story, but it’s not the whole story. Take another deeply human endeavor, wine-tasting, as an example. It was first reported that non-experts are very bad at making the simplest distinctions about wine, but shortly afterwards it was found that experts make the same kind of mistakes and sometimes they in fact made more mistakes.
Plus it is usually tricky to do experiments on aesthetic (美学) appreciation. This experiment was about the participants’ self-report about their experiences and, as we know from literally thousands of studies, self-reports can be misleading in most contexts. So this experiment was not about the real aesthetic experience of poetry, which is what really maters. It was about what participants thought about their aesthetic experience.
The study is important and creative. But it doesn’t show that promising poets should abandon their passion. Not yet, anyway.
12. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The process of the experiment. B. The principle of the experiment.
C. The subject of the experiment. D. The result of the experiment.
13. Why does the author mention “wine-tasting” in paragraph 5?
A. To compare poetry with wine. B. To show non-experts’ preferences.
C. To prove the research findings. D. To argue against the team’s explanation.
14. What can be inferred about the non-experts according to the text?
A. They showed good aesthetic appreciation skills.
B. They had prior experience in evaluating poetic quality.
C. They rated the poems based on their aesthetic experience.
D. They were expert in distinguishing AI poetry from human poetry.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of human poetry?
A. Optimistic. B. Indifferent. C. Critical. D. Doubtful.
A 13. D 14. C 15. A
根据第二段“The researchers chose 10 famous poets: Samuel Butler, Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare... They then asked ChatGTP 3.5 to write poems in the style of each poet. And they asked the participants, who were not experts, to rate the work on 14 scales, like profundity, rhythm, originality, imagery, beauty, emotion, and overall quality.(研究人员选择了10位著名诗人:塞缪尔·巴特勒、杰弗里·乔叟、威廉·莎士比亚……然后他们让ChatGTP 3.5模仿每位诗人的风格写诗。他们还让非专家参与者从14个维度对这些作品进行评分,如深刻性、韵律、独创性、意象、美感、情感和整体质量)”可知,该段详细描述了实验的具体操作步骤,即实验过程。故选A项。
根据第五段“This must be part of the story, but it’s not the whole story. Take another deeply human endeavor, wine-tasting, as an example. It was first reported that non-experts are very bad at making the simplest distinctions about wine, but shortly afterwards it was found that experts make the same kind of mistakes and sometimes they in fact made more mistakes.(这一定是部分原因,但并非全部。以另一项极具人类特色的活动——品酒为例。最初有报道称,非专家在对葡萄酒进行最简单的区分时表现很差,但不久之后发现,专家也会犯同样的错误,有时甚至犯更多的错误)”可推知,作者提到品酒是为了反驳研究团队关于“非专家因缺乏专业知识而更偏好AI诗歌”的解释,说明专家也可能犯错,不能仅将原因归结于非专家的专业性不足。故选D项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段中的“This experiment was about the participants’ self-report about their experiences and, as we know from literally thousands of studies, self-reports can be misleading in most contexts. So this experiment was not about the real aesthetic experience of poetry, which is what really maters. It was about what participants thought about their aesthetic experience.(这个实验是关于参与者对自己体验的自我报告,正如我们从成千上万的研究中所知道的,在大多数情况下,自我报告可能会产生误导。所以这个实验并不是关于诗歌真正的审美体验,而这才是真正重要的。它是关于参与者对自己审美体验的看法)”可推断,非专家是根据自己的审美体验来给诗歌评分的,只是这种自我报告可能存在误导性。故选C项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“The study is important and creative. But it doesn’t show that promising poets should abandon their passion. Not yet, anyway.(这项研究既重要又有创意。但这并不意味着有前途的诗人应该放弃他们的热情。至少现在还不是)”可知,作者认为该研究虽有意义,但并不能说明人类诗歌会被AI取代,对人类诗歌的未来持乐观态度。故选A项。

In a quiet little village surrounded by rolling hills, Lucy and her brother Max were walking to the family’s strawberry fields to pick some strawberries when they came across an injured baby owl (猫头鹰). The tiny owl was lying on the ground, with one of its wings badly hurt and its big, brown eyes looking helplessly at the teens. Lucy and Max were animal lovers and they knew they had to do something to help the poor, little creature.
“We have to save this baby owl. Max,” Lucy said as she knelt down beside the bird.
Max nodded. “I agree. But where can we take it?”
Lucy thought for a moment and then remembered a wildlife rehabilitation center (野生动物康复) located a few miles away. They quickly placed the baby owl in the small box they had planned to put strawberries in. Max took off his shirt to cover the box to keep the bird warm. They carefully placed the box in their backpack and headed out to the center.
The journey was not without its challenges. The skies suddenly darkened and the rain began to pour down, wetting Lucy and Max completely in seconds. But they were determined to save the baby owl, and so they trudged on (步履艰难地走), searching for shelter from the rain. They finally found a big tree to hide under and huddled (蜷缩) together, trying to keep the box dry:
As the rain continued to fall, Lucy and Max looked at the baby owl in the box. It was so small and weak. They felt a sense of determination and protectiveness towards the little bird. They knew that they had to save it, no matter what.
Gradually, the rain got weaker and Lucy and Max continued their journey. They walked along a winding path, which was wet and slippery. They had to use some tree branches as walking sticks to provide them with extra support and to ensure their stability.

It was now time for the little bird to be released back into the wild. They were invited to witness the wonderful scene.
From his teaching experiences Mr Marc quickly realized that teaching requires more than just knowing the subject.
C

Plus, it is usually tricky to do experiments on aesthetic (美学) appreciation.
A The process of the experiment. B. The principle of the experiment.
C. The subject of the experiment. D. The result of the experiment.
13 Why does the author mention “wine-tasting” in paragraph 5?
C. Critical. D. Doubtful.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
