But 43 percent of these languages are dying out, according to UNESCO (联合国教科文组织). Languages become endangered for many reasons. One of the reasons is that fewer and fewer people speak these languages. These people sometimes leave their communities and move to cities or towns. Once a language dies, it never comes back to life. Governments all over the world are taking action to stop this. In New Zealand, the government has said it wants more than 20 percent of the country’s population to be able to speak basic Maori (毛利语) by 2040. It plans to provide Maori lessons in all New Zealand schools by 2025, The New York Times reported. China is also trying to protect its languages. About 130 languages are spoken in China. In 2015, the government started a project to record all the languages spoken in China. Universities like Minzu University of China have set up these language learning courses for their students. Some people argue that language loss, like the loss of some animal species, is simply a fact of life on Earth. However, all languages are human heritage. When we lose a language, we lose the culture of the people who speak it. Language itself is often the only way to pass on a certain community’s history and culture, as well as its knowledge of things like math and geography. 21. How many languages are dying out? A. About 43. B. About 130. C. About 2,500. 22. Why do so many languages become endangered? A. Because there are fewer people in these countries. B. Because these languages are not useful in communication. C. Because more people work in cities and fewer people speak these languages. 23. According to the passage, what is often the only way to pass on the history, culture and knowledge of a certain community? A. Its language. B. Its culture. C. The government. 24. Zigong lanterns are known as the best lanterns in the world. The Zigong Lantern Festival dates back to the Tang Dynasty. The festival has rapidly developed with traditional culture and modern technologies. In 2008, the Zigong Lantern Festival was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (国家级非物质文化遗产), becoming a shining name card for Chinese culture to go out into the world. “Making a huge lantern for exhibition requires 17 steps,” said Wan Songtao, an inheritor (传承人) of Zigong lantern-making. “Each step is finished by a team instead of a single maker,” Wan added. The sundial (日晷), a kind of lantern, made by Wan’s team, for example, took about 80 makers over 50 days to complete the whole process. Unlike the lanterns in other places, Zigong lanterns use modern technologies such as AI, mechanical engineering (机械工程), and holography (全息摄影术). They are perfect combinations (结合) of lights, sounds and movements. What’s more, the theme of the lantern can be chosen in different ways. “Anything that can be designed on a lantern can make a wonderful show, and everyone is encouraged to turn their ideas into real works,” said Zhang Fanglai, a leading researcher at the Colorful Lantern Museum of China. And the rich themes of Zigong lanterns show the spirit of creativity and warmth from the bottom of the local people’s hearts. The government encourages local people to learn lantern-making widely. Without doubt, at the heart of the Zigong Lantern Festival’s success is the local tradition of pulling together. Zigong lanterns are getting more and more popular. Driven by the collective efforts of the whole city, they have reached over 80 countries. It’s believed that Zigong lanterns will reach every corner of the world in the future. 31. Which of the following poets (诗人) could probably enjoy Zigong lanterns? A. Cao Cao. B. Li Bai. C. Tao Yuanming. 32. And this book keeps being printed, and it keeps growing. At its last printing, it consisted of 20 volumes (卷), with nearly 22,000 pages. This book is one of the most famous dictionaries in the English-speaking world, the Oxford English Dictionary. The Oxford English Dictionary or OED for short, began in 1857 as just an idea of a group of people who thought the world needed an English-language dictionary to show the history of English words from 1150 CE to the present. It wasn’t until the late 1870s, however, when James Murray joined the project that it began to grow. Murray planned for a dictionary of about 6,400 pages in four volumes, completed in 10 years. James Murray (1837—1915) did most of his work in a small metal building called the Scriptorium. That small building, hot in summer and cold in winter, was the place where Murray and his assistants (助手) collected millions of pieces of paper, each one with a word and an example sentence or phrase written on it. Murray and his assistants worked hard, but after five years they had only reached the word ant! It was not until 1928 that the dictionary was told to the public to be completed and published: 10 volumes with over 400,000 words and phrases. James Murray did not live to see the completion of his life’s work. He passed away in 1915, over ten years before the OED came out. As soon as the dictionary was published, however, the editors started to update (更新) it! In 1933, the Oxford English Dictionary was reprinted in 12 volumes. Between 1972 and 1986, four more volumes were added with new technical and scientific vocabulary and words from other English-speaking countries, such as Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. In 1989, the entire (整个的) dictionary was reprinted in 20 volumes! Three years later, all 20 volumes were put onto CD, and the entire dictionary is available online today. With about 600,000 words and three million quotations (引语) from over 1,000 years of English, the OED records where the English language has come from and has also become an important part of English-speaking cultures around the world. They did this to remember soldiers who died in 1949 to set the city free. This year is the 30th year of the “walking ideological and political education class (行走的思政课)”, a tradition that began in 1995 and has encouraged more than 30,000 students. The journey begins before the sun comes up. The people taking part carry white flowers they made by hand and sing patriotic (爱国的) songs like Ode to the Motherland. They walk through mountain paths (小路) to Renshanhe Martyrs’ Cemetery, where 391 soldiers are sleeping—many of whom were teenagers aged 18-25. The walk is not easy. People often face rain or snow. In 2021, a snowstorm turned the trip into a 14-hour fight, yet everyone didn’t give up. This activity mixes history with learning by doing. Students study battle maps (作战地图) in geography class, write poems to martyrs, and act out historical stories during English lessons. At the cemetery, they clean tombstones and read the names of fallen soldiers. One student shared, “Touching the cold stones made me understand their bravery of giving up their lives for our country.” Over the years, the walk has become a national model for education. Many who used to be students, like spacecraft engineer Yan Qi, believe the walk teaches them to be strong and work as a team. Teachers say it helps students understand the price of peace better than textbooks ever could. This 30-year tradition shows that education is not just about books—it’s about feeling history with your feet and heart. As one teacher said, “When students walk this path, they carry forward both memory and responsibility (责任感).” 56. Why do the teachers and students do the walk every year around the Qingming Festival? _____________________________________________________________________________________________ 57. How difficult is the walk? (explain from two points) _____________________________________________________________________________________________ 58. In 2015 the government started a project to record all the languages spoken in China. B. 31. B.任务型阅读 根据短文内容,按要求回答问题。 On April 3, 2025, the day before the Qingming Festival, over 2,300 students and teachers from Guyuan City, Ningxia, started on their yearly 54-kilometer walk.
