girl on the first day. She seemed very lonely and often sat 7 at
the table. I tried to give her confidence to join other children in
different activities. By the end of my 8 there, she had made
some friends and looked much happier than before.
I loved every minute there and 9 to see the look of
pleasure on every child’s face. The children were upset when I
was 10 , but I thought I was even sadder. I told them I would
visit them if I was free.

A cousin sent an email saying she had been out cutting her
lawn (草坪) for two hours in the hot sun. She said it reminded
her of her dad working outside. “There was not a breath of cool
air, which was unbearable (难以忍受的) for all the people but
my dad. That was my hero—loyal, and very hard-working.”
Her dad and my dad were brothers. There were five boys in
the family. The boys were cut from the same cloth.Every one of
them enjoyed hard work. It wasn’t easy raising a large family
during the Depression (大萧条), but their farm was the first
one for miles around to have electricity. Their dad made a small
power station using batteries. Resourcefulness (足智多谋) was
another nature of them. When my parents married, they didn’t
have much. When they got a dog, my father managed to build a
doghouse from wood.
I think of my dad when I see a barbecue. He loved to have a
barbecue. For years, he and Mum prepared a big meal on July 4th
every year. Dad loved grilling out especially when it was hot. That
was also his favourite time to cut the lawn. He and all his brothers
were most comfortable outside. It came from the spring planting
and the fall harvest.
At my dad’s retirement party, at a large university where he
had worked his way up to purchasing director (采购总监), he
laughed and said, “I never want a desk job.” I didn’t realize
how much our dad loved us until that moment. He had enjoyed his
career and the people he had worked with, but until the day he
died, there was nothing as beautiful as a field of corn.
Here’s to dads who work hard and do what needs to be done
because of their love of their families.

hikers to accompany you. Their knowledge of the trail can be
invaluable (极有用的) in keeping you and the others with you
safe and on track.
