In a small village, there lived a young boy named Tim. Tim was known for his extraordinary talent in painting, but he was also known for being short of confidence. He often hid his paintings, fearing they would not be good enough for others to see.
One day, an art competition was announced in the village. Tim’s friends and family encouraged him to enter, but he hesitated (犹豫), doubting his abilities. His grandfather, a wise old man, noticed Tim’s hesitation and took him to the village river.
“Look at the river, Tim,” said his grandfather. “Do you see how the water keeps moving forward, even when it runs into rocks? No matter what trouble it meets with, it always finds a way around or over them.”
Tim watched the water, understanding the lesson. His grandfather continued, “Your talent is like the water. It’s powerful and beautiful. Don’t let fear block your path. Flow like the water, and let your talent shine.”
Encouraged by his grandfather’s words, Tim decided to enter the competition. He painted with all his heart, pouring his emotions into the painting. When the day of the competition came, he handed in his painting, still nervous but committed (坚定的).
The results were announced, and to everyone’s surprise, Tim won the first prize. His painting was admired for its depth and emotion. Tim learned a valuable lesson that day: Confidence comes from within, and it’s very important to believe in oneself.
From then on, Tim never hid his paintings again. He became a well-known artist, always remembering the day his grandfather taught him to flow like water, overcoming every difficulty with determination (决心).
24. Why did Tim hesitate to enter the art competition at first?
A. He had no time to prepare for it. B. He didn’t think he could make it.

People send messages every day on social media. These online conversations can have a huge impact and shape how societies make decisions. However, there is a growing problem: Sometimes, people may not listen to each other and end up saying hurtful things. Would it be better if there were an advisor in online conversations? We tried to use artificial intelligence (AI) to carry out this task.
So, we did an online experiment (实验) with pairs of people discussing a challenging topic. In the first group, one participant (参与者) in each pair had an AI helper. The AI tried to make sure the discussion was polite and respectful (尊敬的). It didn’t change the participant’s point of view, though! The participant could accept or refuse the suggestions or completely edit the message an AI helper offered. In the control group, the people had a conversation on the same topic but neither of the participants had an AI helper. After the discussions ended, the pairs shared their thoughts on how good the conversation was.
In our study, the participants accepted the AI’s suggestions two-thirds of the time. When they used the AI’s suggestions, the messages became more positive and polite. Participants whose partners used the AI reported feeling better about the conversation. They were more willing to understand and respect each other, even if they still disagreed. The people who used the AI themselves didn’t report a huge change in how they felt about the conversation. However, they were more willing to respect the opinions of others!
The results of our study show that AI did a good job of making online discussions more polite. But you don’t need a reminder to be respectful. Even in the vast digital world, each conversation matters. Your choice to be kind and respectful can make a big difference. It can promote a culture of healthy discussion and understanding. This is also true for real-life conversations.
28. What is the function of Paragraph 1?
A. To offer a suggestion. B. To give a conclusion.
C. To lead in the topic. D. To present a research finding.
29. What was the role of AI in the experiment?
A. It made sure the conversation was more friendly. B. It provided new topics for discussions.
C. It made participants disagree less. D. It changed participants’ opinions.
30. What did the participants whose partners used the AI report after the discussion?
A. They found it harder to respect each other.
B. They felt more positive about the conversation.
C. They were more likely to disagree with their partners.
D. They became more interested in the topic of discussion.
31. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Will AI Be the Future of Social Media? B. Can AI Help Reduce Real-life Arguments?
C. Should AI Manage Our Online Conversations? D. Can AI Make Online Discussions More Polite?
D
The Amazon rainforest is as undisturbed a place as most people can imagine, but even there, the effects of a changing climate (气候) are becoming clear. Now, research suggests that many of the region’s most sensitive bird species (物种) are starting to evolve (进化) in reaction to warming.
Birds are often considered sentinel species, meaning that they show the health of an ecosystem (生态系统), so scientists are particularly interested in the way they act when the climate changes. In general, the news has not been good. For instance, a 2019 report by the National Audubon Society found that more than two-thirds of North America’s bird species will be in danger of extinction by 2100 if warming trends continue on their current course.
For the new study, researchers have collected the biggest data set so far on the Amazon’s resident birds, representing 77 non-migratory species and lasting the 40 years from 1979 to 2019. During the study period, the average temperature in the region rose, while the amount of rainfall dropped, making for a hotter, drier climate overall. According to the report on November 12 in the journal Science Advances, 36 species have lost weight in great amounts, as much as 2 percent of their body weight per decade since 1980. Meanwhile, all the species showed some decrease in average body weight, while a third grew longer wings.
Because of the study’s long time series and large sample sizes, the authors are able to show the important effects of climate change on local birds. They suppose smaller birds may have an easier time keeping cool. In general, smaller animals have a larger rate of surface area to body size, so they dissipate more heat faster than a bigger animal. However, the researchers themselves are unsure and wonder what advantage the wing length changes give the birds.
32. Why do scientists like to study birds?
A. They act in special ways. B. They may soon disappear.
C. They are changing due to warming. D. They tell us whether the ecosystem is healthy.
33. What can we learn from the new study?
A. About 33% of species evolved longer wings.
B. 36 species lost weight each year.
C. Amazon gets hotter and wetter.
D Rainfall has increased in the Amazon.
34. What does the underlined word “dissipate” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Take in. B. Turn over. C. Give off. D. Pick up.
35. What would probably the researchers further study?
A. The influence of weather on birds.
B. The reason for the weight loss of birds.
C. The method for small animals to stay cool.
D. The advantage of the change in birds’ wing length.

One day, when Tom was cleaning out his late grandfather’s attic (阁楼), he found an old, dusty box hidden behind a collection of forgotten books. He opened it to find a small fortune in cash, along with a letter addressed to him.
The letter was written in his grandfather’s familiar, neat handwriting. It read: “Tom, my boy, this money is yours now. But remember, the true value of money is not in having it, but in what you do with it. Use it wisely, and it will bring you more than just wealth.” Tom’s heart raced. He had always dreamed of buying a new bicycle, the latest video game console, and all the snacks he could ever want. But the letter’s words left him deep in thought.
The next day, Tom walked around the neighbourhood, thinking about how he could use the money. He saw Mrs Thompson, an elderly neighbour, having difficulty carrying her groceries (杂货). She was a kind woman who always had a smile for everyone, but she had fallen on hard times after a car accident last year. Tom decided to help her carry the groceries in. As they talked, Mrs Thompson mentioned that her old heater had broken down, and she couldn’t afford to fix it. The winter was coming, and she was worried about staying warm.
Tom’s mind raced. He knew he could use some of the money to help Mrs Thompson. But he also remembered his own desires. Finally, he decided to divide the money. He would buy the new bicycle he had always wanted, but he would also use a portion (份) of the money to fix Mrs Thompson’s heater. He called a repairman and paid for the service using his grandfather’s money. Mrs Thompson was overjoyed and grateful. She hugged Tom tightly and thanked him, tears in her eyes.
Tom felt a strange sense of satisfaction. He had always thought that money was meant to be saved or spent on oneself.

【答案】28. C 29. A 30. B 31.

D. Rainfall has increased in the Amazon.
【答案】32. D 33. A 34. C 35. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述气候变化下亚马逊鸟类进化及研究人员的发现与疑惑。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Birds are often considered sentinel species, meaning that they show the health of an ecosystem (生态系统), so scientists are particularly interested in the way they act when the climate changes.(鸟类常被视为指示物种,这意味着它们能反映生态系统的健康状况,因此科学家对它们在气候变化时的行为方式格外感兴趣)”可知,科学家喜欢研究鸟类是因为它们能反映生态系统的整体健康情况。故选D。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Meanwhile, all the species showed some decrease in average body weight, while a third grew longer wings.(与此同时,所有鸟类物种的平均体重都有所下降,而三分之一的物种长出了更长的翅膀)”可知,约33%的物种长出更长的翅膀。故选A。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词前文中的“They suppose smaller birds may have an easier time keeping cool. In general, smaller animals have a larger rate of surface area to body size(他们认为体型较小的鸟类可能更容易保持凉爽。通常来说,体型较小的动物,其表面积与体重的比例会更大)”可知,体型小的动物表面积与体重比更大,因此散热更快。结合“keep cool”的语境,“dissipate”应表示“释放、散发”,与give off同义。故选C。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“However, the researchers themselves are unsure and wonder what advantage the wing length changes give the birds.(然而,研究人员自身也不确定,并且想知道鸟类翅膀长度的变化能为它们带来什么优势)”可推知,研究人员可能会进一步研究鸟类翅膀长度变化的好处。故选D。

第二节(满分25分)

However, seeing Mrs Thompson’s happiness made him realise that there was more to it.

His grandfather’s words had changed him.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
However, seeing Mrs Thompson’s happiness made him realise that there was more to it. He had helped someone in need, and it felt incredible. The following weeks were a whirlwind of decisions for Tom. He found other ways to use the money to help people around him, from buying school supplies for a classmate who couldn’t afford them to making donations to a local charity. Each time he gave, he felt a growing sense of fulfillment.
His grandfather’s words had changed him. Money was no longer just a means to buy things; it was a tool to make a difference. He decided to write a letter to his grandfather, though he knew he would never receive a reply. In the letter, he thanked him for the unexpected lesson and promised to continue using the money wisely. As he sealed the letter, he felt a deep sense of gratitude and determination. He had discovered the true value of money, and he was ready to keep his grandfather’s legacy alive.
