But the servant knew what the rich man had said was untrue. After the rich man was away from his home, he enjoyed a nice meal. Because he drank too much, he was drunk and fell to the ground. When the rich man came back, he couldn’t find his food and his wine. He became very angry. He woke the servant up. But the servant told his story very well. He said a cat had eaten up everything. The September 3 military parade (阅兵) marked the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931—1945) and the World Anti-Fascist War. It aimed to protect the post-World War Ⅱ international order and celebrate the shared victory over fascism (法西斯主义), especially Japanese fascism.
Japan staged the September 18 Incident in 1931, occupying parts of Northeast China, and started a full invasion (侵略) in 1937. The Chinese people resisted Japanese forces for more than 10 years, with about 35 million deaths and injuries. It greatly contributed to the victory of World War Ⅱ in 1945. It also helped create a political system that brought peace to the world.
This system has three main parts: holding fascist states responsible for starting wars, including requiring Japan to follow a pacifist Constitution (和平宪法); creating the United Nations to solve international problems through dialogue; and setting up the Bretton Woods system to support global free trade.
But the international order is now under threat (威胁). Japan is trying to drop its pacifist Constitution. The US has been pulling back from globalization (全球化) by leaving some international agreements. Also, the high tariffs (关税) the US has put on imports are shaking the postwar economic system.
Contrary to (与……相反的) what some anti-China forces said, the display of weapons in the parade was not a show of force. Instead, it showed the openness of China’s military power. China’s national defense policy of active defense ensures that the Chinese military will never invade another country. China’s military power is for protecting its sovereignty (主权), national security (安全) and territorial integrity (领土完整), and for keeping global peace.
43. What was the main purpose of the September 3 military parade?
A. To celebrate China’s National Day.
B. To mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War.
C. To show China’s military strength to the world.
D. To protest against the United States.
44. How long did the Chinese people resist Japanese forces during the war?
A. 5 years. B. 8 years. C. 14 years. D. 15 years.
45. Which of the following is NOT part of the post-World War Ⅱ international order mentioned in the article?
A. Holding fascist states responsible for starting wars. B. Creating the United Nations.
C. Establishing a global monarchy. D. Setting up the Bretton Woods system.
46. According to the article, what is threatening the current international order?
A. China’s military modernization. B. Japan’s attempt to drop its pacifist Constitution.
C. The United Nations’ failure. D. Globalization.

The sixth planet was ten times larger than the last one. There the little prince met an old gentleman who was writing a big book.
“What is that big book?” said the little prince. “What are you doing?”
“I am a geographer,” the old gentleman said to him. “And I am writing about all the seas, mountains and deserts.”
“That is interesting,” said the little prince. “So could you tell me something about your planet?”
“I couldn’t tell you,” said the geographer. “But you are a geographer!”
“Exactly,” the geographer said, “But I am not an explorer. We don’t have any explorers here. I don’t go out to count the seas, mountains and deserts. Instead, I receive explorers from other planets in my study. I ask them questions, and I write down their answers.”
The geographer’s eyes suddenly shone with excitement.
“But you... you come from far away! You are an explorer! You shall describe your planet to me!”
“Oh, where I live,” said the little prince, “it is all so small. I have a flower on my planet.”
“We do not record flowers,” said the geographer.
“Why is that? The flower is the most beautiful thing on my planet!”
“We do not record them,” said the geographer, “because they are ephemeral.”
“What does that mean .. ‘ephemeral’?”
“Geographies,” said the geographer, “are the books about eternal things. The thing that matters to us is the mountain. It doesn’t change. But your flower is different. It will not last long. It is ephemeral.”
“My flower is ephemeral,” the little prince said to himself, “and I have left her on my planet, all alone!”
That was his first moment of regret. But he took courage and asked, “What place would you advise me to visit now?”
“The planet Earth,” replied the geographer.
“I promise you will like it.”
And the little prince went away, thinking of his flower.
— Adapted from The Little Prince
47. Where is this text most likely taken from?
A A film poster. B. A storybook. C. A travel guide. D. A news report.
48. What can we learn about the geographer?

C. He loves reading a large book. D. He has been to many other planets.
49. What does the underlined word “ephemeral” mean?
A. Staying the same. B. Looking beautiful. C. Lasting a short time. D. Sounding interesting.

Ever since we learned that the surface of Mars is cold and dead, people have wondered if there is a way to make it friendlier to life. Problems ahead include deadly UV rays and salty soil. But the biggest is that the surface temperature of Mars averages about -60°C. A recent study published in Science Advances put forward a revolutionary way to take one step closer to our age-old dream to live on Mars.
In the study, the researchers designed particles (颗粒) that look like tiny short sticks in order to keep the heat and scatter sunlight towards the surface, strengthening Mars’ natural greenhouse effect. This study shows that if the particles were sent into Mars’ atmosphere (大气) continuously at 30L per second, the planet would warm by more than 10°C, to temperatures suitable for microbial (微生物的) life—an important first step towards making Mars suitable for humans to live on.
What makes this method stand out among others is its use of materials available on Mars, making it far more practical than earlier ideas that depended on transporting materials from the Earth. And the new method is over 5,000 times more effective than earlier ones to globally warm Mars. This method would still take decades (数十年). But as Edwin Kite, a researcher in the team, said, “At least this suggests that the difficulty of warming Mars to allow liquid (液态的) water is not as big as thought before.”
However, much work remains to be done. We don’t know exactly how fast the particles would cycle out of Mars’ atmosphere, for example. Mars does have water and clouds, and, as the planet warms, it’s possible that water would begin to turn into tiny drops around the particles and fall back to the surface as rain. This would result in a decrease of particles in Mars’ atmosphere, reducing the warming effect. Kite noted, “Climate feedbacks are really difficult to model correctly. We would need more data from both Mars and the Earth and must proceed carefully to ensure the effects.”
Besides, the researchers stress that the study focuses on warming Mars to temperatures suitable for microbial life and possibly growing food crops—not on creating a breathable atmosphere for humans. Anyway, this research shows new possibilities for exploration and could bring us one step closer to our long-held dream of living on Mars.
50. According to the recent study, the particles could ________.
A. do harm to the microbial life B. deal with UV rays and salty soil
C. increase the temperature on Mars D. build a greenhouse for men to live in
51. What can we learn about the new method?
A. Humans can breathe on Mars if it works properly.
B. Its full effect will be seen soon as the particles are sent.
C. Materials from the Earth will be transported to Mars.
D. Drops of water with the particles in may fall back as rain.
52. What is the passage mainly about?
A A more practical way to heat Mars. B. An age-old dream to explore Mars.
C. Chance of creating Mars’ atmosphere. D. Difficulty of making Mars more livable.

During the Spring and Autumn Period, Qi and Lu were neighboring strong states. Under Duke Huan’s rule, Qi became powerful, while Lu was respected as the land given to the Duke of Zhou.
Duke Huan wanted to control the central areas, so he planned to weaken Lu. He ordered all Qi officials to wear Lu’s gauze (缟布) and didn’t allow Qi people from making their own satin (纨布). All gauze would be bought from Lu. This decision made the price of gauze rise quickly. Lu businessmen got rich by selling gauze to Qi.
Lu farmers stopped growing crops to plant mulberry (桑树) trees for making gauze. Soon, Lu’s fields were full of mulberry trees, not food crops. Lu’s ruler thought happily: “Qi depends on our gauze! Our state will be strong!”
But Duke Huan and his smart advisor Guan Zhong had a secret plan. Months later, Qi suddenly stopped using Lu gauze and stopped selling food to Lu.
This shocked Lu completely. Lu was full of unsold gauze. With no grain left (since they stopped farming), Lu people had no food.
Lu’s ruler finally understood Duke Huan’s idea. He quickly sent messengers (信使) to Qi, asking him to restart trade. But Duke Huan required: Lu must accept Qi’s leadership and pay yearly taxes. Lu had to agree. Qi won the trade war, making Lu weaker.

A. to speak; reading B. speak; read C. speaking; read D. speaking; reading
2. ________ exercise you take, ________ you’ll be.
A. The fewer; the fatter B. The less; the fatter C. The less; the more fatter D. The fewer; the fat
3. —What do you think of the man?
—I find ________ difficult to work with him.

考查形式宾语的用法。its它的,形容词性物主代词,不能作形式宾语;one一个,可用作代词,不可作形式宾语;it它,代词;that那个,指示代词,不能作形式宾语。句中“difficult to work with him”是真正的宾语,空处用it作形式宾语,指代后面的不定式短语。故选C。
4. Our teacher asks us to read newspapers every day ________ we can find out what’s going on around the world.
A. so that B. even though C. in order to D. as soon as
【答案】A
【解析】

“Geographies” said the geographer, “are the books about eternal things.

A. A more practical way to heat Mars. B. An age-old dream to explore Mars.
C. Chance of creating Mars’ atmosphere. D. Difficulty of making Mars more livable.
【答案】50. C 51. D 52. A
