1.阅读表达题兼有阅读理解和书面表达特征,先阅读然后表达;

In the morning, I write this to-do list:
1. Go to the bank.
2. Get a nice haircut.
3. Pick up my academic statement from college.
4. Submit my poems.
I think, “That’s enough for one day.”
Up until a few years ago, I didn’t aim to be anywhere. And in order to be nowhere, one does not need a to-do list as a guide. Focusing only on the most pressing matter in front of me was enough. Let the next urgent moment think for me.
My mother had tried to teach me about planning my day ever since I was 10. But I never practiced it until I was 25 and done with college. That’s when I awoke to the fact that I didn’t want to waste any more time. I live in Nigeria, where life and success can be difficult. There seem to be many roads to failure here.
I grew up seeing my mother firmly in charge of her day. She knew — and still knows — where she needed to be at every moment, in every detail. She may not be good at singing, acting, or sports. But she is excellent at planning. Every day she writes a list. I never understood why she had to write down a list that consists of items you can easily hold in your mind. “Your to-do list is like your second mind,” she told my younger self. “If you ever feel lost or overwhelmed, you consult your second mind.”
I didn’t understand what she meant by “a second mind” until I seemed to lose my first mind in my everyday life. Sometimes, it seems as though it’s the rainy season in my mind, flooded with confused and distracting thoughts that lead nowhere. I need a second mind — now!
As I sit in the barbershop awaiting my nice haircut, a friend asks me, “What’s next?”
“Pick up my academic statement from college” I say. “Then submit my poems.”
“You’ve got it figured out like a granny,” he jokes.
“No,” I say, “like my mother.”

Studies show teaching children how to cook at an early age helps with reading comprehension and fine motor ability, in addition to learning about nutrition and food safety. In 2015 Stephanie Drewry was looking for a cooking summer camp for her three children. To her dismay, she quickly realized such a camp didn’t exist.
“I have my degree in education, but I had been staying home with my kids, ” Drewry says. “I love working with kids, so I just decided to take a spare bedroom and turn it into a one-room cooking school called Sprouts Cooking School. ”
The school grew in popularity so quickly that Drewry realized she would need more space outside her home for the classes. In 2017 she moved Sprouts into a 1,400-square-foot storefront (临街店面) in Carmel, Indiana. As demand grew, Drewry opened another Sprouts in the same area in 2022.
“Our classrooms are built with kids in mind. The worktops (操作台) in the classrooms are slightly lower than normal to fit in with their height,” Drewry says. “All of the cooking facilities are domestic ones. I wanted to have them feel like cooking in their own home.”
The school offers activities targeted at kids aged 3 to 13. Younger kids might make cookies while older ones are cooking soup and meatballs. There are birthday parties and summer camps as well. The fun part of the activities is that the kids can eat or take home whatever they make. They can also enjoy themselves in the themed classes like Harry Potter or Winter Wonder-land Baking. With all these activities, the school is extremely popular.
Teaching kids, especially those picky eaters, to cook helps a lot because they’re more willing to eat something made by themselves. More importantly, it is also about releasing children into the world with a life skill they’ll need as an adult when they’re no longer in their parents’ care.

Awake from a short sleep in her chair, my grandmother ran her fingers through her wavy white hair, looked out her window at the blue sky, and asked me what I would wish for if I had just one wish.
She often asks this, and I always answer the same way—“To have Granddad back” —which usually gets her reminiscing about him. Memories of their 67-year life together would always make her smile.
My grandmother was born in Ireland. In her teens, she moved to a poor village in England. At 28, my grandmother walked herself through the snow to birth her first child. When she was 50, she survived an emergency surgery. In her 60s, she suffered from arthritis(关节炎)but still managed to climb Snowdon, Wales’s tallest peak.
About a decade ago, I noticed that she began to lose her hearing. If I asked what she had for lunch, she might say, “Oh, the weather has been lovely today. ” She seemed to recycle the same handful of answers to my questions.
In recent years, I’ve been trying to show up for her more, in person. One day after I made us coffee, I asked her: “What’s the secret to being successful in your 90s? ”
“Oh Richard, so many people are old at 60. They just want to sit all day. You won’t make it to 90 like that. You have to try. ”
“Try what? ”
“Try walking, ” she said. “Try gardening. Try cooking. Trying doesn’t require a lot of trying. Just try a little . Like, with this coffee you’ve made us. I know you tried . ”
Even at 93, my grandmother still knits blankets for the local hospital’s babies and buys books to continue with her French. “Age is just another bot- her attempting to convince you of the impossible in the world, but actually the world is filled with possibilities,” she once said.
1. What does the underlined phrase mean in Paragraph 2? (no more than 2 words)
2. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3? (no more than 10 words)
3. Why did the author’s grandmother recycle the same answers to his questions? (no more than 10 words)
4. How can people be successful in old age according to the author’s grandmother? (no more than 10 words)
5. In your opinion, what can young people do to improve the quality of old people’s life? (no more than 20 words)

Herman Cruse, a school bus driver from New Jersey, has been with Middle Township Public Schools for the past nine years. He believes bus drivers are the eyes and ears of students when they're away from home and they have a gift to discern what kids are feeling.
During one morning ride, Cruse noticed a kindergartner seemed a little sad. When Cruse asked him what was wrong, the boy explained that he wasn't able to complete his reading assignment because his parents were busy with his four siblings An idea suddenly crossed Cruse's mind. “Listen, if you don't mind, I'd like to come to the school and read with you. ”he said.
After receiving permission from the boy's teacher, Alex Bakley, Cruse showed up at her classroom the following week. When he walked in, the boy shouted proudly, “Hey, that's my bus driver!”They went into a quiet corner and began reading together. Later, a second student wanted to read with him, then a third. All the kids went to the teacher asking, “Can I read with Mr. Herman?”
Cruse now volunteers to help kindergarten students with reading two days a week, and on a third day, he instructs the school's first-and second-graders. After dropping the kids off at school, of course. Every child looks up to Cruse, both on and off the school bus. “Herman is super positive and he's a bright light at our school who makes every child feel loved and heard. ”said Bakley.
For Cruse, what started out as a way to kill time has now developed into a way to make a difference in the heart of a child. He used to go to the gym or library after delivering students to schools. It wasn't until he offered to help the boy on the bus that he realized there was something more rewarding he could be doing. It's a joy for him to see the kids get excited when they learn to sound out words. He loves how reading opens up a new world for them.

Growing up in San Francisco, Grace Young used to watch her father shop daily in Chinatown for whatever he needed to make traditional Chinese meals at home. As an award-winning cookbook author, Ms. Young, now 66, has spent decades shopping the same way in New York’s Chinatown.
Ms. Young developed a passion for cooking at an early age. At 13, she started to sit in on cooking classes. After college, Ms. Young moved to New York and worked in a book-packaging company. In her 30s, she realized that while she had helped create more than 40 cookbooks, she didn’t know how to make the dishes that tasted of home. “I knew if I recorded all of my parents’ recipes, it would be a great gift that I could give my family and the next generation.” she says.
Yet what began as a recipe book became a kind of memoir. Talking about food encouraged her parents to finally open up about their past, like the fact that her father had owned a Chinatown restaurant in the 1940s. “It was really an amazing way to learn not only my family’s recipes, but also my family’s story. “she says. The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen (1999) launched Ms. Young’s work in preserving and sustaining Chinese culinary (烹饪的)traditions.
Ms. Young has also devoted herself to supporting the restaurants in Chinatown. Since early 2020, Ms. Young has raised money to buy meals from Chinatown restaurants and deliver them to those in need. This year, instead of cooking at home for her husband and friends, she celebrated the Chinese New Year with various dishes from local restaurants in Chinatown. “If these restaurants don’t survive, Chinese culinary traditions in our city won’t survive.” she says.
1. What is Ms. Young known as?(no more than 5 words)
2. Why did Ms. Young want to record her parents’ recipes?(no more than 15 words)
3. What does the underlined word mean in Paragraph 3?(no more than 2 words)

5. How does Ms. Young inspire you in her efforts to preserve Chinese Culinary traditions? Please explain in your own words. (no more than 20 words)

It was a dark and stormy night. The ferocious wind shook the windows wildly, as though someone outside were beating on the glass. It was also New Year’s Eve. We were having our annual party and had a house full of people just starting to celebrate.
Suddenly, we heard loud explosions. Looking outside and up into the hills, we saw sparks(火花) flying from electrical transformers(变压器). One area after another went dark up in those hills. Then there was the loudest explosion of them all and our house went dark too. I tried to find every candle we had and lit them. The candles made everything look lovely. But we had problems. We had fifteen people standing around and we still had to cook dinner. How would we do that without electricity?
The barbecue! Why not cook on the barbecue? We men went outside, some holding flashlights and others cooking. We did a wonderful job. The women stayed inside and got the salads ready. Everything was delicious. There were still a few hours to go before the beginning of the new year, so we all sat around the dining room table and sang up until a few minutes before midnight. We couldn’t watch the ball drop in Times Square on television but that wouldn’t stop us from celebrating. I stood on a chair and, with the help of someone’s watch to tell us the time, we all counted down and I dropped a tennis ball! We all screamed Happy New Year. We didn’t need electricity for that!
Nowadays, we still get together with the same group to celebrate the New Year and we still talk about that special night. I don’t think we have ever laughed so much as we did on that New Year’s Eve.

Most of us associate learning with younger people—kids in school and college or recent graduates early in their careers. But at Udemy, an open university offering online courses, Artist Anneke Camstra is engaged in the pursuit of lifelong learning and displays her potential for teaching. She loves the experience of gaining new knowledge and also loves sharing it with others. “I’m retired, but an artist never retires,” Anneke said. “The last few years on the internet have been a great joy for me. I’ve taken so many Udemy courses, and ifs such a great feeling to get my brain working again. I find just as much satisfaction in teaching animation(动画制作)too.”
She reaches countless people with her online courses and exposes them to what they can accomplish on their own using animation software, such as GoAnimate and PowToon. Her motivation for teaching on Udemy is “to get the tools to the people.”“You can go such a long way to make things that look professional but still have your own voice,” she explained.
Most of Anneke’s students start out thinking they’re not creative and can’t draw. Anneke understands how fear can get in the way of so many things people dream of doing. With her five-day challenge courses, she helps them get over the fear. Anneke loves the impact she has on her students. What makes her more proud of them is that they have gone from their first animation to creating their own works.
She encourages people of all ages, especially older people, to cultivate their curiosity for life. Grandparents, for example, can learn to use GoAnimate and make animations together with their grandkids.

Everyone told me not to bother applying to medical school. People “like me,” just didn’t go to university, let alone become a doctor. I am deafblind. Until the age of 16 I was training on the GB Swimming Team to participate in the London 2012 Paralympics, when in summer 2010 the surgery on my stomach went terribly wrong. I ended up bedridden in hospital for a year and a half, needing to have another 20 stomach surgeries. My swimming career was over.
However, it was during that time of being a patient that my experience strengthened my desire to become a doctor. But getting to that point hasn’t been smooth. I had to restart education and life. I studied by myself for my A-levels and attended a special educational needs school for blind students. Against the suggestions of others, I applied to a medical school and unexpectedly got an offer. But just before moving in, I was informed that they had changed their mind. I could have given up at this point. But a determination to give it one last shot led me to apply again. This time I obtained a place at Cardiff School of Medicine, where I’ve become the first deafblind student to be training towards becoming a doctor here in the UK.
Life certainly has its ups and downs, but I try to face all the challenges with a positive attitude and a forward focus. I’ve suffered, and continue to suffer a lot of discrimination though. “Imagine you’re a patient. Would you allow a disabled doctor to treat you?” some people once laughed at me. Another time, when I asked someone to speak louder so that I could hear, he walked away and whispered to his friend, “How do you expect an invalid like her to run the NHS (National Health Service)?” It’s discouraging, but I’m continuing to push through.
1.What does the underlined word mean in Paragraph 3? (no more than 5 words)
2.What led to the end of the author’s swimming career? (no more than 5 words)
3.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? (no more than 10 words)
4.What does the author do in the face of discrimination? (no more than 10 words)
5.Would you allow a doctor like the author to treat you? Please explain. (no more than 20 words)

I must admit I did not buy 40 books this year. At a nearby bookshop I paid for a membership card that allows me to borrow two or three books at a time and keep them for a month.
Owning a book has its advantages, such as allowing you to make notes to your heart’s content, and you can reread it anytime you want, but borrowing holds advantages, too. One consideration is space, and in my city where a foot of land is worth an inch of gold, this issue speaks volumes when it comes to owning books.
You want to reread a book, but just look at how many books there are on your bookshelf that you haven’t finished reading even once. People tend to finish books they borrow more quickly than the ones they own, mainly because of the pressure of a deadline. Several times during the year I stayed up late to finish a book the night before the due date. I finished about 10more books that way.
It is increasingly difficult to choose a good book because there are simply so many out there. Even if you choose only from a narrow area of interest, singling out 40 is challenging. Book reviews and the comments readers leave on the websites of online bookstores can be helpful in this regard.
But you cannot judge a book by its review. What I do is try to find and borrow the book from the bookshop. Some are like fast food: you leaf through (浏览) the pages and finish them quickly. Some are strong in certain chapters but weak in others. Some have titles that scream at you but lack substance
I cut my losses by perusing (精读) on the spot or borrowing. Of the 40 I read from cover to cover, I bought four I thought were worth keeping. Strangely, I had not really set out to read those four books but came across them in the bookshop. That unpredictability was one of the exciting parts of this reading adventure.
1.What are the advantages of owning books according to the author? (no more than 15 words)
2.What does the underlined part “speaks volumes” in paragraph 2 mean? (no more than 3words)
3.How are book reviews helpful? (no more than 10 words)
4.What experience was exciting for the author in the bookshop? (no more than 10 words)
5.Should we borrow books or buy books? How do you decide? (no more than 30 words)

As a novice teacher at a kindergarten, I spent a lot of time observing the interaction between experienced teachers and their students. Oftentimes when kids fall, they don’t start crying immediately. Usually kids will be OK until they lock eyes with an adult: one that they trust and know can do something for them. When I noticed this, I so wanted it to happen to me, because that meant I had earned a kid’s trust and had proven that I was able to help them with anything.
One day it finally happened. Hearing a kid yell, “Teacher, Sam fell down. ”I rushed out and found Sam, who was looking puzzled. When our eyes locked, his lower lips started trembling and tears welled up in his eyes. He ran towards me and let me give him a big hug. We checked to make sure he wasn’t hurt. It was in that moment that I realized something odd. Sam’s vulnerability and coming to me for help was supposed to give me more power. But strangely, the power, I felt, shifted more to Sam, because he was giving me a privilege: a gift for me to do something for someone.
With everything I learned from teaching in the kindergarten, I went to conquer other things in life. Later I landed a job to work extensively with volunteers. I loved the relationship I was building there and the feeling of being asked for help.
Over time, I increasingly pressured myself to stay busy and helpful. My self-worth became associated with my performance at work, which brought about one of the lowest moments of my life. Even then, my mind was running at a hyper speed into problem- solving mode and it didn’t even occur to me that I could ask for help. I was surrounded by so many people who cared for me, but I just couldn’t see them. Finally, my good friend had to literally hold me by my shoulders and force me to ask for help. With their ongoing support, I overcame one difficulty after another.
I love helping others and I firmly believe others are willing to help me. We all want to be the best self in life: strong, independent and self- reliant, but we don’t always have to be. Let’s start asking for help more often, because helping Sam is a privilege and a gift.
1.Why did the author want the kids to turn to her for help? (no more than 20 words)
2.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2? (no more than 15 words)
3.What led to one of the author’s lowest moments in life? (no more than 20 words)
4.What does the underlined word mean in Paragraph 4? (1 word)
5.From this story, what can you learn about “help”? (no more than 25 words)

My brother and I were driving home together and started talking. Because of this distraction, my brother took a wrong turn.
Unfortunately, the wrong turn took us toward a bridge and, we had no way of turning back My brother had to pay to cross. He was clearly disgruntled by the mistake and the needless waste of $4.
As we drove forward, my brother noticed a beat-up (破旧的) black Mustang (福特野马汽车) pulled over to the side of the road. A young guy was standing nearby trying to phone someone. I was busy trying to figure out which way we went next but my brother pulled over and asked the guy if he needed any help. And he did. He had a flat tire.
My brother helped him change the flat. We started getting to know the young man who was from a rough neighborhood nearby. He said that this has been a bad week for him; earlier he had gotten into a minor car accident. and now this flat on his way home from work. But he called us “a breath of fresh air” and kept thanking us because he really would have been stuck if we hadn’t come along. After we had finished the job, he thanked us again and pulled out $20 to try to give it to us. “No,” I said. “We were never supposed to even get on that bridge. We took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did. It was to help you. Thank you for turning our mistake into an opportunity to serve.”
What I loved most was watching my brother throughout this process. He was able to turn his annoyance over the mistake into positive energy. He was able to see a chance to help (which I totally missed!) even in an otherwise negative situation, which can only come from a calm mind and an open heart. That was the bridge we were meant to cross.

Everything seemed to change for me when I entered high school. In my freshman class, I never saw a single person I knew from middle school. At home I was just as lonely. My older brother was a senior, consumed with future decisions about college or military life. My little brother didn’t want anything to do with me, “a girl.” My older sister was outgoing and never without her friends. They all fit in, I thought. Why can’t I?
Mom was there waiting for me. “Karole, your bedroom’s a disaster. Why can’t you keep it clean?” The last thing I needed was criticism from my mother. Clean your room. Finish your dinner. Clean the dishes. What had happened to the mother who used to snuggle with me on the couch, reading to me, loving me with complete acceptance? I didn’t bother trying to explain my misery. It was easier to sit with my tight-lipped moodiness, holed up in my bedroom.
I sat down at my desk and pulled out my math textbook. I turned to a fresh page in my notebook and started working out the first problem. Almost immediately, I saw I’d made a mistake. I tore the paper out of my notebook, balled it up in my fist and threw it at the wastepaper basket. By the time I finished my homework, the floor was littered with crumpled (起皱的) paper. Every time I looked at those crumpled balls, I reminded myself what a failure I was. But my unhappiness stayed hidden away, just like those mistakes.
One day, I came home to an empty house. It was a relief not to be met with Mom’s latest complaint. I went up to my bedroom as usual. When I opened the door, I froze. It was neat as a pin. Mom had obviously decided to clean it herself. All the crumpled papers had disappeared. Except one single sheet. I picked up the sheet and turned it over.
I recognized Mom’s perfect handwriting at once: “Dear Karole, I have noticed your unhappiness these days and I am sorry for being so critical of you lately. I will always love you and side with you when you need my support I expect you to be the same, sweet self. Love, Mom.”
1.How did the author feel at high school and at home? (no more than 5 words)

The phone rang and her name appeared on the screen. “They found something, a little blip (光点),” she said, and then, trying to put me at ease, “Don’t worry. They’ll go in and remove it. It will be alright.” Eighteen months later, the cancer that had returned first as a blip ended her life.
Amy’s disease was stunning for us all. This should not happen to a kind, well-loved and respected individual who made so many lives around her better. In spite of pain and fear, Amy’s humor and compassion remained. In the middle of a life interrupted, she continued to display a concern for others. She once said at her forty-sixth birthday, “Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone with cancer could have a special day like this?”
For those of us there, in the midst of all that beauty, in all the magic of a perfect day, what was not lost was the fact that Amy was seriously ill. I was certain that every one of us wondered whether this would be her last birthday. And yet, in that moment, Amy was not thinking of herself, nor of us, but of others who shared with her a diagnosis of cancer.
With her passing, Amy’s family and friends contributed thoughts and ideas to create a non-profit foundation because we wanted to fulfill her wish that “everyone with cancer could have a special day”. We decided to call it “Amy’s Treat”. Everything fell rather smoothly into place. Our mission is to provide solutions for the day-to-day difficulties of living with cancer and to offer unexpected “treats” to renew the spirit.
Volunteering for Amy’s Treat has restored in me a once shaking faith in the thoughtfulness of humankind. We wouldn’t be successful without the generous kindness of so many people who will never meet the person or families that their checks and donations will benefit.
I witnessed many kindhearted acts, such as receiving ten quarters taped to a card from the seven-year-old son of a woman whose car payment we had made, on which he wrote, “Thank you for lending my mom a hand.” I think Amy would be pleased with how it all turned out.

A man in black clothes jumps high into the air. Before he lands, he strikes a pose. Sometimes, he carries a red fan. With long white sleeves(袖子), he spreads his arms like wings. His dance is eye-catching, often attracting crowds.
He is Chinese dancer Ma Jiaolong. Since 2020, he’s made short videos of himself dancing in London. He has performed at the city’s parks and iconic landmarks like Tower Bridge. The 35-year-old has nearly 5 million followers on Douyin, where he shares his videos.
Classical Chinese dance combines martial arts movements with those of traditional Chinese opera. He started to learn it at 12. “I was attracted by the dancers who play ancient heroes through the movements of classical Chinese dance,” said Ma.
Later, Ma studied at the Beijing Dance Academy. Since 2019, he has been teaching classical Chinese dance at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Two years ago, Ma had to give online classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In his small home, he could only make small moves. One day, he took his wife’s suggestion and danced at Greenwich Park, a popular tourist spot. She recorded Ma. He then edited the video, added music and sent it to friends. “Surprisingly, they loved it, which inspired me to share it online,” said Ma.
Later, Ma made more short videos. He combines his dance moves with dazzling action. People are often curious about his performances. So, while dancing, he likes to interact with them. As his videos went viral, he received messages from people around the world.
“Now, making and sharing short videos has become a part of my life, and, most importantly, a great way to introduce classical Chinese dance to more people, especially overseas viewers,” said Ma.

Friends show off their pets on WeChat Moments, people walk dogs in the park and people watch videos of cats online. Everywhere you look, people seem to be enjoying their pets. Indeed, they are an important part of our modern lives, even for people who don’t own a pet.
A new report from Aug.15 sheds light on this trend. Asian Pet Show and online platform Goumin released the 2019 Chinese Pet Industry White Paper. It shows that China’s urban pet consumer market is expected to break through the 200 billion yuan threshold (门槛) this year, with the overall consumption scale reaching 202.4 billion yuan. That means an increase of 18.5% over that of 2018. Young people in big cities are the main contributors.
“Most young people are suffering from great loneliness and pressure. Keeping pets will help them feel cozy and relaxed,” wrote the report.
Many young people who leave their hometown to make a living in big cities have had pressure of living in a new place. After working all day in a competitive environment, they have few friends and face high cost of living.
Claire Krisko from the US is one of the many young people. She told Teen Ink, a website for the teenagers in the US, that she felt very lonely in her own city. To combat it, she bought a dog.
“After a hard day, seeing a happy face and wagging (摇动的) tail, bouncing (跳跃着跑) around the corner and running toward me will make my day better. I was no longer lonely,” she said.
Apart from relieving loneliness, many scientific studies have shown that keeping a pet reduces stress and may even improve overall health.
“Playing with or petting an animal can increase levels of the stress-reducing hormone (荷尔蒙) and decrease production of the stress hormone. These hormonal changes can help nervous people feel more relaxed and happy,” the BBC noted.
We always believe that pets have to live with humans, but it seems that many of us can’t live without our furry companions.

Growing up in a noisy apartment above my mum’s tailor shop, I always believed my future was already predetermined — I would simply inherit the business and spend my life sewing and fixing zippers. Although I enjoyed helping customers, a faint sense of restlessness often tugged at (牵动;拉扯) me, as if another world were quietly calling my name. Sometimes, while ironing fabric late at night, I would catch myself wondering what life looked like beyond the shop windows, where students hurried by with backpacks full of books I had never read.
Everything changed during a winter volunteer program at a research center. I was assigned to assist with data entry, which sounded dull at first. Yet one afternoon, a researcher invited me to observe her experiment on plant resilience. As she explained how tiny genetic changes allowed certain plants to weather extreme climates — from freezing nights or burning sunlight — I felt an excitement I had never experienced in the tailor shop. The idea that something so small could survive forces far greater than itself filled me with awe.
A week later, the researcher showed me a microscope image: a glowing plant cell that looked almost like a small universe. The sight was fascinating, and for the first time in my life, the future felt wide open rather than fixed. I began to wonder whether the path I had assumed truly suited me. That night, I walked home slowly, replaying the image in my mind, feeling both frightened and thrilled by the possibility of change.
When I finally told my mum I wanted to study biological science, she was silent for a long moment. Then she smiled and said, “A life cannot flourish if it grows only where it was first planted. ” Her unexpected support strengthened my resolve. She even reminded me that she herself had once left her hometown with nothing but a sewing kit, proving that choosing a different road did not mean abandoning one’s roots.
Now preparing for my first youth science forum, I realize that a single moment of inspiration can redirect an entire life — and that sometimes, the most important discoveries are not found in laboratories, but within ourselves. Whenever I feel uncertain about the challenges ahead, I think of that glowing cell under the microscope, a reminder that growth often begins in the smallest spark of curiosity.
1.What future did the author assume for himself at first? (no more than 10 words)
2.What does the underlined word mean in Paragraph 2? (1 word)

4.What role did the author’s mother play in his final decision? (no more than 10 words)
5.Have you ever experienced a moment that changed your life direction? Please explain (no more than 20words)

Gloria Scott decided it was time to call an electrician in early August after she turned on a light switch in her kitchen and suddenly a flash of light flew overhead. Obviously, the lights need repairing.
Electrician John Kinney fixed the problem and got her lights working again. But when he returned to his own home that weekend, he couldn’t stop thinking about Scott, 72, living with her dog in her shabby house in Woburn, Mass.
“She reminded me of my grandma, who passed away 10 years ago,” said Kinney, 37, who runs Kinney Electric. “Her wiring was in bad shape and I really worried about her safety.”
The following Monday, Kinney returned to Scott’s home with an extra offer. While organizing things inside her house, he noticed that she had no hot water coming out of her faucets(水龙头). He also discovered that her kitchen sink was broken and the ceilings were full of holes...
It was then that Kinney decided to start a Facebook page called “A Nice Old Lady Needs Help” and raise funds to do all of the repairs. To his surprise, it went viral. In less than a month, nearly $115, 000 was raised and the campaign now has a new name: “Gloria’s Gladiators.”
“We were hoping to inspire others and that’s exactly what is happening,” said Kinney, noting that the Gloria’s Gladiators group now has more than 15, 000 members—many of whom were inspired by Scott’s story to begin doing free home repairs in their own neighborhoods.
Scott felt so thankful for Kinney and other volunteers’ help that she was speechless.
Kinney said he’s thankful for the opportunity to repair Scott’s home, and there is something else that has also brought him joy.
“We’ve opened up Gloria’s world,” he said. “Now, I hope we can do the same for all of the other Glorias out there. Nobody should have to go through life alone. ”

5. In your opinion, what can young people do to improve the quality of old people’s life? (no more than 20 words)
1. Remembering./Thinking of. /Thinking about. /Missing.

In her 60s, she suffered from arthritis(关节炎)but still managed to climb Snowdon, Wales’s tallest peak.(我祖母出生在爱尔兰。 My grandmother has/had a rich life experience./My grandmother has gone through a lot./My grandmother is/was an extraordinary woman.
根据第四段中“About a decade ago, I noticed that she began to lose her hearing. If I asked what she had for lunch, she might say, “Oh, the weather has been lovely today. ”(大约十年前,我注意到她的听力开始下降。如果我问她午餐吃了什么,她可能会说:“哦,今天天气真好。”)”可知,作者注意到祖母十年前开始失去听力,所以当作者问她午饭吃了什么时,她可能会说“哦,今天天气真好。”,这说明她无法听清作者的问题,因此会用同样的几个答案来回答作者的问题。故答案为Because she began to lose her hearing./Because she could not hear clearly.
根据第六段中““Oh Richard, so many people are old at 60. They just want to sit all day. You won’t make it to 90 like that. You have to try. ”(“哦,Richard,很多人60岁就老了。他们只想整天坐着。你这样活不到90岁的。你必须尝试。”)”以及第八段““Try walking, ” she said. “Try gardening. Try cooking. Trying doesn’t require a lot of trying. Just try a little . Like, with this coffee you’ve made us. I know you tried . ”(“试试走路,”她说。“试试园艺。试着做饭。尝试并不需要很多尝试。就尝一点。比如,你给我们煮的咖啡。我知道你尽力了。”)”可知,作者祖母认为人要想在老年时成功,就要不断尝试。故答案为They should remain active in old age./By trying different things./ They should try doing things.
根据问题内容“In your opinion, what can young people do to improve the quality of old people’s life? (在你看来,年轻人能做些什么来提高老年人的生活质量?)”可知,本人认为:我们可以帮助老年人学习新的技能,使他们能够跟上社会的步伐。或者他们可以更经常地看望他们的祖父母,花时间和他们在一起。故答案为We can help old people to learn new skills so that they can keep pace with society./They can visit their grandparents more often and spend time with them.

1. What does the underlined word mean in Paragraph 1? (1 word)

4. How does the author feel about that particular New Year’s Eve? (no more than 8 words)
5. What do you think is the most necessary quality when dealing with an unexpected difficult situation? Please explain why. (no more than 25words)
1. Fierce./ Strong./ Violent. 2. No electricity./ The power failure./ There was no electricity./ Electricity was gone. 3. They cooked on the barbecue, sang, and counted down./ By cooking on the barbecue, singing, and counting down. 4. It was the most exciting one./ It was a night filled with laughter./ It was special./ Exciting./ Pleasant./ Unforgettable./ Joyful./ Different./ Memorable./ Unique. 5. It is courage, for it gives us strength, which enables us to deal with difficulties.

根据文章第四段“Nowadays, we still get together with the same group to celebrate the New Year and we still talk about that special night.

1.A disabled person. 2.A wrong stomach surgery. 3.The author’s struggle to enter medical school. 4.She faces it positively and keeps pushing through. 5.Yes. Because her determination and ability make her a qualified doctor.
根据第三段中的““Imagine you’re a patient. Would you allow a disabled doctor to treat you?’ some people once laughed at me. Another time, when I asked someone to speak louder so that I could hear, he walked away and whispered to his friend, ‘How do you expect an invalid like her to run the NHS?”(“想象一下你是病人。你会允许一个残疾医生治疗你吗?” 有些人曾经这样嘲笑我。还有一次,当我请别人说话大声点好让我听见时,他走开了,对他的朋友小声说:“你怎么能指望像她这样的invalid来管理国民医疗服务体系呢?”)” 可知,前文提到作者是残疾人士,此处别人的话语是在嘲讽作者的残疾状态,由此猜测 invalid 意为“残疾人”。故填A disabled person.
根据第一段中的“Until the age of 16 I was training on the GB Swimming Team to participate in the London 2012 Paralympics, when in summer 2010 the surgery on my stomach went terribly wrong. I ended up bedridden in hospital for a year and a half, needing to have another 20 stomach surgeries. My swimming career was over.(直到16岁,我一直在英国游泳队接受训练,准备参加2012年伦敦残奥会。2010年夏天,我的胃部手术出了严重问题。我最终卧病在床一年半,还需要再做20次胃部手术。我的游泳生涯就此结束了)”可知,是一次失败的胃部手术导致作者的游泳生涯终止。故填A wrong stomach surgery.
根据第二段“However, it was during that time of being a patient that my experience strengthened my desire to become a doctor. This time I obtained a place at Cardiff School of Medicine, where I’ve become the first deafblind student to be training towards becoming a doctor here in the UK.(然而,正是在当病人的那段时间里,我的经历增强了我成为一名医生的愿望。 The author’s struggle to enter medical school.
根据第三段中的“Life certainly has its ups and downs, but I try to face all the challenges with a positive attitude and a forward focus. It’s discouraging, but I’m continuing to push through.(生活当然有起起落落,但我努力以积极的态度和向前看的心态面对所有挑战。这很令人沮丧,但我仍在继续坚持下去)”可知,面对歧视,作者会积极面对并坚持下去。故填She faces it positively and keeps pushing through.
Yes. Because her determination and ability make her a qualified doctor.(答案不唯一,符合要求即可)

4.What experience was exciting for the author in the bookshop? (no more than 10 words)
5.Should we borrow books or buy books? How do you decide? (no more than 30 words)
1.You can make notes freely and reread it anytime you want. 2.matters a lot. 3.They help you choose good books easily and quickly. 4.He came across some nice books unexpectedly. 5.For the books to be tasted and swallowed, I prefer to borrow them. However, for the books to be chewed and digested, I’d like to buy them.
根据文章第二段“Owning a book has its advantages, such as allowing you to make notes to your heart’s content, and you can reread it anytime you want(拥有一本书自有其好处——比如可以随心所欲地记下你内心的想法,且可以随时重读)”可知,拥有图书好处在于可以随心所欲地记笔记和随时重读。 You can make notes freely and reread it anytime you want.
根据文章第二段划线短语speaks volumes前文的内容“but borrowing holds advantages, too. One consideration is space, and in my city where a foot of land is worth an inch of gold(但借书也有其优点。一个现实的考虑是空间问题,在我生活的城市里一寸土地一寸金)”可知,划线短语前文提到借书的优点就是能节省空间,故可推知在城市这种寸土寸金的现实下,书籍的存放空间变得极为重要,故此处划线speaks volumes短语意为“极其重要”,故答案为:matters a lot.
3.考查细节理解。根据文章第四段“It is increasingly difficult to choose a good book because there are simply so many out there. Even if you choose only from a narrow area of interest, singling out 40 is challenging. Book reviews and the comments readers leave on the websites of online bookstores can be helpful in this regard.(现在要挑到一本好书越来越难,因为书实在太多了。即使只从你感兴趣的某个狭窄领域里挑选,要挑出40本也是个挑战。在这方面,书评和读者在网店留下的评论能有所帮助。)”可知,现在要挑到一本好书越来越难,但是书评和读者的评论可以帮助解决这个问题,故书评可以帮助人们更容易更快地选书。故答案为:They help you choose good books easily and quickly.
根据文章最后一段“Of the 40 I read from cover to cover, I bought four I thought were worth keeping. Strangely, I had not really set out to read those four books but came across them in the bookshop. That unpredictability was one of the exciting parts of this reading adventure.(在我从头到尾读完的40本书中,我买了4本我认为值得保留的。奇怪的是,我本来并没有特意打算读这四本书,只是在书店偶然遇到。这种不可预知性是这次阅读冒险中令人兴奋的部分之一。)”可知,作者提到在书店偶然遇到好书所带来的不可预知性,是整个阅读冒险中最令人兴奋的部分之一。故答案为:He came across some nice books unexpectedly.
根据文章最后一段“I cut my losses by perusing (精读) on the spot or borrowing. Of the 40 I read from cover to cover, I bought four I thought were worth keeping. (我通过现场精读或借阅来避免浪费。在我从头到尾读完的40本书中,我买了4本我认为值得保留的。)”可知,作者通过“在书店精读或外借来减少损失,对于值得保留的书才购买”。故通过文章,可以学到的明智决策是:对于大多数书,采用节约来试读,只有少数经过检验且有价值保存的书才购买。故答案为:For the books to be tasted and swallowed, I prefer to borrow them. However, for the books to be chewed and digested, I’d like to buy them.
1.Because it meant she had earned a kid’s trust and proven that she was able to help them. 2.The author gained Sam’s trust and realized the privilege of helping him. 3.Associating her self-worth with her performance at work and pressuring herself to stay busy and helpful. 4.Rapid./Fast./Quick./High. 5.Help is mutual. We can both offer help to others and receive help from them. Learning to ask for help is also a kind of wisdom.(开放性试题,答案不唯一)
根据第一段“When I noticed this, I so wanted it to happen to me, because that meant I had earned a kid’s trust and had proven that I was able to help them with anything.(当我注意到这一点时,我非常希望这能发生在我身上,因为这意味着我赢得了一个孩子的信任,并证明了我能够帮助他们做任何事情。)” Because it meant she had earned a kid’s trust and proven that she was able to help them.
根据第二段“One day it finally happened. But strangely, the power, I felt, shifted more to Sam, because he was giving me a privilege: a gift for me to do something for someone.(终于,那件事还是发生了。 The author gained Sam’s trust and realized the privilege of helping him.
根据第四段“Over time, I increasingly pressured myself to stay busy and helpful. My self-worth became associated with my performance at work, which brought about one of the lowest moments of my life.(随着时间的推移,我越来越强迫自己保持忙碌和乐于助人。我的自我价值与我在工作中的表现联系在一起,这带来了我一生中最糟糕的时刻之一。)”可知,作者将自我价值与工作中的表现联系在一起,并强迫自己保持忙碌和乐于助人,这导致了作者人生中最低谷的时刻之一。故答案为Associating her self-worth with her performance at work and pressuring herself to stay busy and helpful.
根据下文“it didn’t even occur to me that I could ask for help(我甚至没有想到我可以寻求帮助)”可知,作者当时没有想到自己可以寻求帮助,由此可推测出作者的大脑处于超高速运转的状态,故hyper的意思是“超高速的”,其同义词有Rapid、Fast、Quick、High。 Rapid/Fast/Quick/High.
例如:通读全文,尤其是最后一段“I love helping others and I firmly believe others are willing to help me. We all want to be the best self in life: strong, independent and self-reliant, but we don’t always have to be. Let’s start asking for help more often, because helping Sams is a privilege and a gift. (我喜欢帮助别人,我坚信别人也愿意帮助我。我们都想成为生活中最好的自己:坚强、独立、自力更生,但我们并不总是需要这样。让我们开始更频繁地寻求帮助吧,因为帮助像萨姆这样的人是一种特权和礼物)”以及文章内容可知,帮助是相互的,我们在帮助别人的同时也能从别人那里得到帮助。学会寻求帮助也是一种智慧。故答案为Help is mutual. We can both offer help to others and receive help from them. Learning to ask for help is also a kind of wisdom.
1.What made the author’s brother take a wrong turn? (no more than 10 words)
2.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “disgruntled” in Paragraph 2 (no more than 2 words)
3.Why did the young guy call the author and his brother “a breath of fresh air”? (no more than 10 words)
4.Why did the author admire his brother after the incident? (no more than 25 words)
5.How does this story inspire you? Please explain. (no more than 25 words)
1.Being focused on the conversation 2.Unhappy./Annoyed. 3.Because they helped him with his flat tire. 4.Because his brother can turn annoyance over the mistake into positive energy and find a chance to help even in a negative situation. 5.In my opinion, whenever someone else is facing greater difficulties than ourselves, we should all offer our help to that person.
根据首段中的“My brother and I were driving home together and started talking. Because of this distraction, my brother took a wrong turn.(我和哥哥一起开车回家,我们开始聊天。因为这种分心,我哥哥拐错了弯)”可知,作者与哥哥开车回家时聊天导致分神而走错了路。故答案为Being focused on the conversation.
根据划线词上文“Unfortunately, the wrong turn took us toward a bridge and, we had no way of turning back My brother had to pay to cross.(不幸的是,我们走错了路,来到了一座桥边,而且我们根本无法折返。我哥哥不得不花钱过桥)”以及后文“by the mistake and the needless waste of $4(由于这一错误以及不必要的4美元浪费)”可知,由于这一错误以及不必要的4美元浪费导致哥哥不高兴、生气。故划线词意思是“不高兴,生气”。故答案为Unhappy./Annoyed.
Because they helped him with his flat tire.
根据尾段中的“He was able to see a chance to help (which I totally missed!) even in an otherwise negative situation, which can only come from a calm mind and an open heart. That was the bridge we were meant to cross.(他能够在原本消极的环境中发现助人的机会(而我却完全错过了!),这完全得益于他冷静的头脑和宽广的胸怀。这就是我们注定要跨越的桥梁)”可知,作者的哥哥把困扰转换成积极的能量,在自己深陷困境时,仍然选择去帮助需要帮助的人,所有这一切应来自于冷静的头脑和豁达的心胸,这是作者最佩服哥哥的地方,也是作者想要做到的事情。故答案为Because his brother can turn annoyance over the mistake into positive energy and find a chance to help even in a negative situation.
根据尾段中的“He was able to turn his annoyance over the mistake into positive energy. He was able to see a chance to help (which I totally missed!) even in an otherwise negative situation, which can only come from a calm mind and an open heart. That was the bridge we were meant to cross.(他能够将因错误而产生的恼怒转化为积极的能量。即便是在一个原本消极的环境中,他也能够看到一个能够提供帮助的机会(而我却完全忽略了这一点!),而这完全源自一颗冷静的心和一颗宽容的心。这就是我们本应跨越的桥梁)”可知,本文讲述的是作者哥哥能在自己深陷困境时仍向他人伸出援手,在我看来,当其他人有比自己更大的困难时,我们都应该向对方伸出援手。故答案为In my opinion, whenever someone else is facing greater difficulties than ourselves, we should all offer our help to that person.
Love, Mom.”

1.She felt lonely. 2.Her mother’s criticism. 3.Hid. 4.She was upset with study and felt a little failure. 5.Yes. Because writing can express love gently and avoid embarrassment, comforting people deeply.(开放性试题,答案不唯一)

根据第二段“The last thing I needed was criticism from my mother.(我最不需要的就是来自母亲的批评。)” 故答案是:Her mother’s criticism。
根据上文“I didn’t bother trying to explain my misery. It was easier to sit with my tight-lipped moodiness(我不想去解释我的痛苦。坐在那里,紧闭着嘴,心情郁闷)”可知,作者不愿意交流,因此躲藏在自己的卧室里,由此可知,“holed up”的意思是“躲藏”,其同义词为“hid”。故答案是:Hid。
4.考查主旨大意。根据第三段“I sat down at my desk and pulled out my math textbook. Every time I looked at those crumpled balls, I reminded myself what a failure I was.( 我坐到书桌前,抽出数学课本。翻开笔记本崭新的一页,开始演算第一道题。几乎刚下笔,我就发现自己算错了。我把这页纸从笔记本里撕下来,攥成一团,狠狠扔进废纸篓。等我总算写完作业时,地板上已经散落着满地揉皱的纸团。每当目光落在那些纸团上,我都忍不住告诉自己,我真是个一无是处的失败者)”可知,第三段主要讲述了作者对学习感到沮丧,觉得自己有点失败。故答案是:She was upset with study and felt a little failure。
Yes. Because writing can express love gently and avoid embarrassment, comforting people deeply.。
1.What does the underlined word mean in paragraph 2? (1 word)
2.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4? (no more than 10 words)
3.What plays an important role in Amy’s Treat’s success according to Paragraph 5? (no more than 5 words)
4.Why did the boy donate money to “Amy’s Treat”? (no more than 10 words)
5.What do you think about Amy? Please explain it in your own words. (no more than 20 words)
1.Shocking. 2.The creation and mission of Amy’s Treat foundation. 3.The generous kindness of people. 4.Because the foundation helped his mother. 5.She is selfless and compassionate. Because she cared about other cancer patients even when she was seriously ill.

根据第二段中“Amy’s disease was stunning for us all. This should not happen to a kind, well-loved and respected individual who made so many lives around her better. In spite of pain and fear, Amy’s humor and compassion remained. (艾米的病令我们所有人……。这种事不应该发生在一个善良、深受爱戴和尊敬的人身上,她让她周围许多人的生活变得更美好。尽管有痛苦和恐惧,艾米的幽默和同情心依然存在。)”可知,艾米是一个善良,且深受爱戴和尊敬的人,所以她患病这件事对所有人来说都是“令人震惊的、可怕的”。故答案为:Shocking。
2.考查主旨大意。根据第四段中“With her passing, Amy’s family and friends contributed thoughts and ideas to create a non-profit foundation because we wanted to fulfill her wish that “everyone with cancer could have a special day”. We decided to call it “Amy’s Treat”. (随着她的离世,艾米的家人和朋友集思广益,创建了一个非营利基金会,因为我们想实现她的愿望,即“每个癌症患者都能拥有一个特殊的日子”。我们决定称之为“艾米的礼物”。)”和“Our mission is to provide solutions for the day-to-day difficulties of living with cancer and to offer unexpected “treats” to renew the spirit. (我们的使命是为癌症患者的日常困难提供解决方案,并提供意想不到的“礼物”来振奋精神。)”可知,本段主要讲述了“艾米的礼物”基金会的创立背景和使命。故答案为:The creation and mission of Amy’s Treat foundation。
根据第五段中“We wouldn’t be successful without the generous kindness of so many people who will never meet the person or families that their checks and donations will benefit. (如果没有这么多人的慷慨善意,我们就不可能成功,这些人永远不会见到他们的支票和捐款将惠及的个人或家庭。)”可知,人们的慷慨善举是基金会成功的重要因素。故答案为:The generous kindness of people。
根据第六段中“I witnessed many kindhearted acts, such as receiving ten quarters taped to a card from the seven-year-old son of a woman whose car payment we had made, on which he wrote, “Thank you for lending my mom a hand.” (我目睹了许多善举,例如,收到了一个女人的七岁儿子寄来的一张卡片,上面贴着十枚25美分硬币,我们曾为这个女人支付了汽车款,他在卡片上写道:“谢谢你帮助我妈妈。”)”可知,男孩捐款是因为基金会帮助了他的母亲,他想表达感谢。故答案为:Because the foundation helped his mother。
根据第二段中“In spite of pain and fear, Amy’s humor and compassion remained. In the middle of a life interrupted, she continued to display a concern for others. She once said at her forty-sixth birthday, “Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone with cancer could have a special day like this?” (尽管承受着痛苦与恐惧,艾米的幽默与同情心却从未消退。在被打断的人生旅程中,她依然持续展现着对他人的关怀。她曾在46岁生日时说:“如果每位癌症患者都能拥有像今天这样特别的一天,那该多好?”)”和第三段中“And yet, in that moment, Amy was not thinking of herself, nor of us, but of others who shared with her a diagnosis of cancer. (然而,在那一刻,艾米想的不是她自己,也不是我们,而是那些和她一起被诊断出患有癌症的人。)”可知,艾米在身患重病时仍关心其他癌症患者,并留下了美好的愿望,最终促成了一个帮助他人的基金会的成立。这体现了她的无私、富有同情心和利他精神。故答案为:She is selfless and compassionate. Because she cared about other cancer patients even when she was seriously ill。
