(B) More than half of the world’s population will be overweight or obese (肥胖的) by 2035 if action is not taken on the problem according to a new report. The report was shared by the World Obesity Federation (WOF). The report said that from 2020 to 2035, the world’s population considered to be obese will increase from 14 percent to 24 percent. In 2020, 38 percent of the world’s population was considered overweight or obese. And obesity rates are expected to rise the most among children. They will increase from 10 percent to 20 percent among boys and 8 percent to 18 percent among girls from 2020 to 2035. The report used BMI to decide whether someone is overweight or obese. BMI is worked out by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters. It is widely used to decide weight types, like being underweight, a healthy weight, overweight or obese. A BMI score of more than 25 is considered overweight, and a score of more than 30 is considered obese. However, BMI cannot tell whether someone’s weight is from fat, muscles or bones. Sportsmen, or anyone with strong muscles, with a large BMI may not always be considered overweight or obese. The WOF warned immediate action must be taken. It suggested reducing the sale of food rich in fat, salt or sugar, and providing healthy food in schools. 31. According to the report, which group of people are most likely to become obese by 2035? A. The adults. B. The children. C. The elders. D. The babies. 32. If one’s BMI score is 27, he or she is usually considered to be ________. A. underweight B. normal C. overweight D. obese 33. Which of the following is TRUE about BMI? A. It often gives children a lower score. B. It is difficult for the public to work out. C. It’s used to decide only three weight types. D. It can’t tell whether someone’s weight is from fat, muscles or bones. 34. What did the WOF think of the report? A. Exciting. B. Surprising. C. Worrying. D. Interesting. 35. What does the writer want to tell us? A. Obesity may be a big problem in the future. B. BMI is used to decide whether one is overweight. C. It’s important to provide children with healthy food. D. Being overweight or obese is harmful to our health. (C) Plastic is everywhere. It has been found at the bottom of the ocean. It’s been found at the top of Mount Qomolangma. Now plastic has been found in another unlikely place: on the backs of hermit crabs (寄居蟹). Hermit crabs are small and have soft bodies. To protect themselves, they usually wear seashells (贝壳). They find shells left behind by dead sea snails. But according to a study, at least 386 hermit crabs are wearing rubbish now. There are 16 species of hermit crabs that live on land, and 10 species of them are wearing rubbish now. And nearly 9 out of 10 of these crabs are wearing plastic. The others are wearing glass or metal. Scientists aren’t sure why hermit crabs are now choosing rubbish instead of snail shells. But they have some ideas. It’s possible that hermit crabs can’t find enough seashells. It’s also possible that crabs choose plastic because it’s light and easy to carry. Or they just like the bright colors. Scientists agree that plastic pollution is bad for wildlife and the environment. But it isn’t clear that the crabs are in any danger. “It’s really an amazing example of the beauty of adaptation (适应),” an expert says. “What are the long-term results of these adaptations? We don’t know.” 36. What’s the writer’s purpose of writing Paragraph 1? A. To give an example. B. To raise a question. C. To introduce the topic. D. To solve a problem. 37. What do hermit crabs normally wear to protect themselves? A. Plastic. B. Glass. C. Metal. D. Seashells. 38. Which could be one of the reasons why crabs wear rubbish? A. The rubbish is colorful. B. The rubbish is heavy for protection. C. The rubbish is easy to find. D. The shells are enough for the crabs. 39. Which of the following is true about hermit crabs? A. They have their own shells. B. They like wearing glass more than plastic. C. They are in great danger because of plastic pollution. D. They are very smart to adapt to the environmental changes. 40. What’s the best title for the passage? A. Protecting crabs B. Plastic pollution C. Creative crabs D. Crabs are in danger (D) Do you know that humans aren’t the only species (物种) that use language? Bees communicate by dancing. Whales talk to each other by singing. And some apes (类人猿) talk to humans by using sign language (手语). A female gorilla (大猩猩), Koko, was born at the San Francisco Zoo on July 4th, 1971. Koko learned sign language from her trainer, Dr. Penny Patterson. Patterson began teaching sign language to Koko in 1972, when Koko was one year old. Koko must have been a good student, because two years later she moved onto the Stanford University campus with Dr. Patterson. Koko continued to learn on the campus until 1976. That’s when she began living full-time with Patterson’s group, the Gorilla Foundation. Patterson and Koko’s relationship has been very close ever since. Dr. Patterson says that Koko has mastered sign language and known over 1,000 words, and that Koko makes up new words. For example, Koko didn’t know the sign for ring, so she signed the words finger and bracelet (手镯). Dr. Patterson thinks that this shows the meaningful use of language. Not everyone agrees with Dr. Patterson. Some argue that apes like Koko do not understand the meaning of what they are doing. Some people who don’t believe that say that these apes are just performing tricks. For example, if Koko points to an apple and signs red or apple, Dr. Patterson will give her an apple. They argue that Koko does not really know what the sign apple means. She only knows that if she makes the right movement, one which Dr. Patterson has shown her, then she gets an apple. The argument is not solved, but one thing is for certain: Koko is an extraordinary (不同寻常的) ape. It seems like Patterson and Koko have a good relationship, but not everyone agrees with it. Some people believe that Patterson is humanizing the ape. They think that apes should be left in the most natural environment. Even Dr. Patterson struggles with these feelings. When she was asked if her findings could be duplicated by another group of scientists, she said, “We don’t think that it would be ethical (道德的) to do again.” She went on to argue that animals should not be kept in such unnatural environments. As for the future, Dr. Patterson and the Gorilla Foundation would love to get Koko to an ape preserve (保护区) in Maui, but they are having trouble getting the land. So unless you have a few million dollars to give, Koko’s going to be spending her time in Woodland, California with Dr. Patterson. Koko probably doesn’t mind that. If she moved to Hawaii, she’d have to give up her Facebook page and Twitter feed, and she’s got like 50 thousand “likes”. Some may deny (否认) that she knows sign language, but nobody says that she doesn’t know social networking. 41. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the second paragraph? A. To describe the environment in which Koko lives. B. To tell readers how Dr. Patterson developed Koko’s living skills. C. To advise Patterson to free Koko after she learnt on the campus. D. To make an introduction about Koko and Dr. Patterson’s background. 42. What do we know from the passage? A. Koko has mastered sign language without a doubt. B. Everybody likes how Dr. Patterson has raised Koko. C. Some people think that Koko only signs to get food. D. The Gorilla Foundation has got a land for Koko to stay naturally. 43. Which of the following may best describe the structure of this passage? A. B. C. D. 44. What does the underlined word “duplicated” in Paragraph 5 mean? A. To fool them. B. To copy something. C. To disagree with someone. D. To be disproved through debate. 45. Which may be the main idea of this passage? A. Koko uses sign language but some think it’s just a trick. B. It is natural for gorillas to learn sign language like humans. C. If you want a lot of “likes” on Facebook, get a talking gorilla. D. Bees, whales, and apes like Koko all use language to communicate. 31. B 32. C 33. D 34. C 35. Crabs are in danger 【答案】36. C 37. D 38. A 39. D 40. To protect themselves, they usually wear seashells (贝壳).” 根据“Or they just like the bright colors.” 故选A。 根据“‘It’s really an amazing example of the beauty of adaptation (适应),’ an expert says. ‘What are the long-term results of these adaptations? We don’t know.’” B。 (D) Do you know that humans aren’t the only species (物种) that use language? 【答案】41 D 42. C 43. C 44. B 45. 根据第四段“Some people who don’t believe that say that these apes are just performing tricks. For example, if Koko points to an apple and signs red or apple, Dr. Patterson will give her an apple. They argue that Koko does not really know what the sign apple means. She only knows that if she makes the right movement, one which Dr. Patterson has shown her, then she gets an apple. 根据第五段“Some people believe that Patterson is humanizing the ape. They think that apes should be left in the most natural environment. Even Dr. Patterson struggles with these feelings. When she was asked if her findings could be duplicated by another group of scientists...” 故选A。 There are always times when you need to leave your child at home alone.
