Over 120 bird species are considered lost as they haven’t been seen in the wild for over ten years. Now, the Search for Lost Birds, a global organization, is taking action. It offers people a database (数据库) and encourages them to share information on the lost birds they might find in the wild. Since its establishment in 2021, the project has discovered 15 missing species including these.
Long-billed Bush Warbler
Lost: 1977| Found: 2022
This songbird once existed in such large numbers in the river valleys of Kashmir that some said it could be heard all day long — until changing agricultural practices threatened its habitats. After 45 years of secret, in 2022, the birdwatcher James Eaton found a warbler in a potato field.
Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon
Lost: 1896| Found: 2022
For 126 years, this pheasant-like bird was considered all but lost on its homeland of Fergusson Island, a mountainous land off Papua New Guinea. Recently, an international team of scientists, guided by local hunters, finally took a photo of the pigeon.
Dusky Tetraka
Lost: 1999| Found: 2022/2023
In late 2022, researchers returned to the same location in the rainforest of Madagascar, where the dusky tetraka had last been seen in 1999. Going down in the rainforest, they finally tracked the songbird hunting in the thick undergrowth along a river.
Urich’s Tyrannulet
Lost: 2005| Found: 2021
This flycatcher, observed only three times since its discovery in Venezuela in 1899, seemed to disappear completely after 2005. However, in 2021, a team led by the bird expert David Ascanio took unique photos and the first recording of its call.
1. What is the purpose of the project started by the Search for Lost Birds?

Every New Year, many people make promises to themselves, only to see them fall by the wayside within a few months, weeks, or even days. However, 26-year-old Luke Cameron is not among those people. After losing a close friend known for her generosity (慷慨) and died of cancer in 2013, the young man decided to do at least one good deed (好事) every day for 365 days and he has not missed one yet.
Cameron performed his first good deed on January 1st, 2014, with the simple act of greeting a waitress at a cafe he visited. The next day he bought food and drinks for some homeless people. Cameron’s good small deeds have been recorded in an online diary, like taking out the garbage for an elderly neighbor or spending a few hours helping a disabled lady pick out a dress for a party. What’s more, the young man has also spent close to £4,000 of his own money, buying gifts for children in need.
Cameron has created a series of some cards, which he has called “Cards for Kindness”. Each card suggests a simple act of kindness — things like giving a stranger a hug or making peace with an enemy, which is to encourage others to perform good deeds.
Cameron’s generosity has not gone unnoticed. To reward the young man as he nears the end of his journey, pizza chain Domino’s recently awarded him a year’s supply of free pizza. Not surprisingly, the big-hearted young man has decided to use the gift to hold special pizza days for charity. His kind deeds have also won him a competition for the job of “National Philanthropy (慈善事业) Manager”.
4. What made Cameron decide to do good deeds every day?
A. The need of a competition. B. The requirement of his job.
C. The influence of his families. D. The death of a close friend.
5. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The influence of simple acts of kindness. B. The good things that Cameron has done.
C. The importance of having close friends. D. The prizes that Cameron has received.
6. Why did Cameron create “Cards for Kindness”?
A. To record his good deeds. B. To make peace with an enemy.
C. To raise money for some charities. D. To encourage people to show kindness.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. No Pains, No Gains B. The Power of Dreams
C. A Good Deed Every Day D. The Best Man in Britain

The ability to use the left hand is referred to as left-handedness. Left-handedness is actually more common in the male population than in females. There are a number of myths about them.
It is difficult for left-handed children to learn writing of the alphabet, without personal tutoring. Not true at all. Observe the left-handed toddler. Everyone else is more bothered about his left-handedness than he himself is. The left-handed child adapts to writing, drawing and all other activities that require him to hold a writing tool as early as the right-handed. In fact, many left-handed people display neater handwriting than their right-handed partners.
Lefties have a lesser chance of surviving a hand-to-hand fight. This is anything but true. History bears witness to the advantage left-handedness had during hand-to-hand fights and even within the boxing ring. In fact, a common observation is that the left-handed fighter is able to strike a strong surprise attack on the open, unprotected right side.
Left-handed people are many a time at the disadvantage of using tools designed for the right-handed. Well, this is true, but today, there is a whole range of tools and equipment being designed for left-handed people. Many right-handed tools can be molded to suit the needs of the left-handed craftsman. Even the computer mouse has been challenged in use and the touch pad provides a left-handed professional equal opportunity.
Research shows that left-handed people are in fact high achievers. This is because their brains are structured to widen their abilities. A number of mathematical, artistic and sporting geniuses were and are left-handed. However, most left-handers over the world, might have, at some stage in their life, been on the receiving end of devalued comments regarding their choice of hand. I am sure this list and discussion about left-handed people would be reason enough to be proud of being left-handed.
8. Who is more likely to be left-handed?
A. Females. B. Males. C. Children. D. Elderly people.
9. What is true about tools for left-handed people?
A. There are no tools designed for them.
B. Only a few tools are designed for them.
C. Many right-handed tools can be molded for them.
D. They always have to use right-handed tools.
10. Why are left-handed people considered high achievers?
A. Because they have better tools.
B. Because they are more determined.
C. Because their brains are structured differently.
D. Because they receive more support.
11. What is the author’s opinion about left-handed children learning to write?
A. They need personal tutoring.
B. They adapt as early as right-handed children.
C They have more difficulty than right-handed children.
D. They are slower in learning all activities.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是说明文。文章主要讲述了现实生活中我们对左撇子的一些误解和不实言论,以及相应的事实。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Left-handedness is actually more common in the male population than in females.(左撇子实际上在男性人群中比在女性中更常见。)”可知,男性的左撇子比例更大,故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Many right-handed tools can be molded to suit the needs of the left-handed craftsman.(许多右手用的工具可以被塑造成适合左手工匠的需要。)”可知,许多右撇子工具可以为左撇子量身定做。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“This is because their brains are structured to widen their abilities.(这是因为他们的大脑结构是为了扩大他们的能力。)”可知,左撇子被认为是高成就者这是因为左撇子的大脑结构不同,故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。题目问的是作者对于左撇子的孩子学习写作的态度,根据第二段“The left-handed child adapts to writing, drawing and all other activities that require him to hold a writing tool as early as the right-handed.(左撇子的孩子适应写作、绘画和所有其他要求他在右撇子早期就持有书写工具的活动。)”可知,在学习写字方面,左撇子孩子和右撇子孩子一样早适应。故选B。
D
The behaviour of a building’s users may be at least as important as its design when it comes to energy use, according to new research from the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC). The UK promises to reduce its carbon emissions (排放) by 80 percent by 2050, part of which will be achieved by all new homes being zero-carbon by 2016. But this report shows that sustainable (可持续的) building design on its own — though very important — is not enough to achieve such reductions: the behaviour of the people using the building has to change too.
The study suggests that the ways that people use and live in their homes have been largely ignored by existing efforts to improve energy efficiency, which instead focus on architectural and technological developments.
“Technology is going to assist but it is not going to do everything,” explains Katy Janda, a UKERC senior researcher, “consumption patterns of building users can defeat the most careful design.” In other words, old habits die hard, even in the best-designed eco-home.
Another part of the problem is information. Households and bill-payers don’t have the knowledge they need to change their energy-use habits. Without specific information, it’s hard to estimate the costs and benefits of making different choices. Feedback (反馈) facilities, like smart metres and energy monitors, could help bridge this information gap by helping people see how changing their behaviour directly affects their energy use; some studies have shown that households can achieve up to 15 percent energy savings using smart metres. Social science research has added a further dimension (方面) , suggesting that individuals’ behaviour in the home can be personal and cannot be known ahead of time — whether people throw open their windows rather than turn down the thermostat (恒温器), for example. Janda argues that education is the key. She calls for a focused program to teach people about buildings and their own behaviour in them.
12. About energy use, the new research from UKERC stresses the importance of ____________.
A. zero-carbon homes B. sustainable building design
C. the behaviour of building users D. the reduction of carbon emissions
13. The underlined word “which” in Paragraph 2 refers to “____________”.
A. the ways B. existing efforts C. their homes D. developments
14. What are Katy Janda’s words mainly about?
A. The importance of changing building users’ habits.
B. The necessity of making a careful building design.
C. The variety of consumption patterns of building users.
D. The role of technology in improving energy efficiency.
15. What does the dimension added by social science research suggest?
A. The behaviour preference of building users is similar. B. The education program is under discussion.
C. The social science research is to be furthered. D. The behaviour of building users is unexpected.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了减少碳排放量、倡导低碳生活,不能只靠科技进步,还需要人们改变自己的行为,采用绿色的生活方式。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“The behaviour of a building’s users may be at least as important as its design when it comes to energy use, according to new research from the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC).(根据英国能源研究中心(UKERC)的新研究,在能源使用方面,建筑物使用者的行为可能至少与建筑的设计同等重要)”可知,这项新研究主要强调的是建筑物使用者的行为。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段The study suggests that the ways that people use and live in their homes have been largely ignored by existing efforts to improve energy efficiency(该研究表明,人们在家中使用和居住的方式在现有的提高能源效率的举措中一直未得到充分重视)”以及划线词后文“instead focus on architectural and technological developments(相反,应将精力集中在建筑和技术的发展上)”可知,which引导的是by后面接的方式,即existing efforts。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段““Technology is going to assist but it is not going to do everything,” explains Katy Janda, a UKERC senior researcher, “consumption patterns of building users can defeat the most careful design.” In other words, old habits die hard, even in the best-designed eco-home.(英国能源研究中心的高级研究员凯蒂·詹达解释道:“技术会起到辅助作用,但并不能包办一切。建筑使用者的使用习惯可能会破坏最精心的设计。”换句话说,即便是在设计最为环保的住宅中,旧有的习惯也依然难以改变)”可知,原有的消费模式可以打败最仔细的设计,即旧的习惯很难消失,所以她的意思是说改变原有的习惯是很重要的。故选A。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Social science research has added a further dimension (方面) , suggesting that individuals’ behaviour in the home can be personal and cannot be known ahead of time — whether people throw open their windows rather than turn down the thermostat (恒温器), for example.(社会科学研究又增添了一个新的层面,表明个人在家庭中的行为具有个人特性,其具体情况事先是无法知晓的——比如,人们是打开窗户还是调低恒温器温度,就是其中的一个例子)”可知,社会科学研究新增的维度表明,使用者的家庭行为具有个人性且无法提前预知,即行为具有不可预测性,故选D。

A There are no tools designed for them.
B. Only a few tools are designed for them.
C. Many right-handed tools can be molded for them.
D They always have to use right-handed tools.
C. They have more difficulty than right-handed children.
D. They are slower in learning all activities.
