When thrown into landfills(垃圾填埋场), it produces methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. To tackle this, the state has a rule: Large food businesses must keep food waste out of the trash. Helping them follow this rule is Heather Billings, a 63-year-old waste reduction consultant. One cold morning, Ms. Billings visited the Port Tavern, a sports bar in Newburyport. Abbie Hannan, the co-owner, had invited her to examine how the restaurant dealt with its waste. In the kitchen, Ms. Billings noticed a simple but common mistake: Food scraps(下脚料) like tomato tops were being thrown into a large trash can. Then, at the dumpster, she checked for compostable(可用作堆肥的) items. As a state-hired consultant, Ms. Billings took notes and gave practical suggestions. She recommended using smaller buckets inside trash bins to collect food scraps, and she connected the restaurant with composting services and food donation programs. “Our biggest challenge is getting the staff to follow the rules,” Ms. Hannan said. Ms. Billings responded by showing clear signs that could be posted in the kitchen as reminders. The state’s regulation applies to places producing over half a ton of waste per week. While businesses that ignore the rule can be penalized the authorities rarely step in. Still, many restaurants are trying. Some even donate extra food to charities, as hunger remains a problem in many communities. Massachusetts has made more progress than other states with similar laws. Environmental groups hope to go further, encouraging residents to compost at home. Meanwhile, the law has also helped new composting companies grow. For Ms. Billings, this work is more than a job. She sees it as a way to protect the environment. At Port Tavern, the biggest challenge was that four restaurants shared the only one dumpster. “It’s complicated,” Ms. Hannan admitted. “Not impossible,” Ms. Billings said with a smile. 24. What does the state rule require large food businesses in Massachusetts to do? A. Limit the amount of food waste. B. Record the daily food waste. C separate food waste from trash. D. Donate food scraps to charities. 25. What did Ms. Billings suggest Ms. Hannan do for her staff? A. Post the relevant instructions. B. Provide basic training. C. Replace trash containers. D. Make stricter rules. 26. What does the underlined word “penalized” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Revised. B. Punished. C. Inspected. D. Recognized. 27 What can be inferred about the regulation’s impact? A. It’s rarely followed in practice. B. It strengthens business cooperation. C. It helps solve the public health issue. D. It promotes environmental improvement. C If someone created a flying machine capable of tracking you down by listening for your voice, you might be terrified. But what if you were trapped in ruins after a natural disaster and first responders couldn’t locate you? Maybe then a human-seeking drone(无人机) wouldn’t be such a terrible idea. That concept is the focus for engineers at Germany’s Fraunhofer FKIE Institute, who’ve built a drone to find people by detecting(探测) human screams. “The human-seeking drone would be ideal for post-disaster situations,” said Macarena Varela, one of the lead engineers. “They could hover over an area that rescue crews have difficulty getting to and locate exactly where people may be trapped.” An auditory(听觉的) system would need to distinguish human cries from sounds that often happen in nature, such as animal calls and wind. It might also need to recognize patterns associated with kicking, clapping or other ways people try to get the attention of rescue teams. Engineers took those situations into account when building out their concept drone. They recorded themselves screaming, tapping and creating other noises that might be a sign of people in trouble. Then, they analyzed each sound frequency to find common signatures and used those to train artificial intelligence software. They also worked to remove the noise created by the drone and other environmental sounds. Once the software part was complete, the team placed tiny digital microphones under the drone and used signal processing techniques that enabled them to track where human noises are coming from. The microphones also enhanced the volume and clarity of the speech. So far, they have conducted successful open field experiments, finding that the drone can estimate a victim’s location within a few seconds of picking up sound. Next, they would like to add a higher frequency microphone to a drone to acquire more audio sound signals. 28. What is the advantage of the human-seeking drone? A. Its high speed of flying. B. Its long working hours. C. Its quick response to screams. D. Its easy access to disaster scene. 29. What can the auditory system do? A. Make out human cries. B. Pick up sounds from far away. C. Send victim’s location data to a tablet. D. Improve the quality of human screams. 30. What does the underlined word “signatures” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Effects. B. Symbols. C. Situations. D. Features. 31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. AI Enables Drones to Give Better Performance. B. Engineers Teach Drones to Hunt Human Screams. C. Human-seeking Drones Replace Rescue Crews. D. Rescuers Use Drones to Locate Disaster Survivors. D Financial education is not often taught to students in school, so the responsibility falls to the parents. However, many families believe that involving their children in how the family’s finances are handled is taboo. Financial planners, however, believe that involving children in financial matters is actually the best way to begin educating them. “By keeping children away from financial discussions, you are really denying them an education,” says Joseph Oakley, host of the Enjoy More 30s podcast (播客) and a certified financial planner. “You’re denying them a framework to build upon.” Oakley notes that children will finally develop their own financial mindset, which could be influenced by what they see on television, social media, or through their friends. When they get their first job, they’ll likely lack experience in handling finances because they don’t know enough about managing their money. According to Oakley, it is up to parents to teach them how to develop those skills. Learning financial responsibility doesn’t have to be formal, Oakley says. Instead, it can be about showing children how to handle everyday money tasks, like paying bills online or using credit cards wisely. Another example is teaching them about spending now or saving for later, such as saving money for a vacation. While childhood financial education is crucial, Oakley reveals a systemic imbalance: Over 80% of financial resources serve people preparing for retirement because that’s where most of the assets (资产) are. He stresses the importance of working with a financial planner when you are a young adult because waiting to speak to someone when you’re close to retirement could affect your financial plans. He says it is easier for younger people to make life-changing decisions and adjust their paths. To hear more financial advice from Joseph Oakley on other topics, like how to set the right goals for financial success, check out our podcast K12 On Learning, available wherever you download your podcasts. 32. What do many parents think of involving children in family financial matters? A. It is a good way to educate children. B. It is something that should be avoided. C. It is an important life skill to develop. D. It is schools that shall take full responsibility. 33. What’s the impact on children if they are kept out of financial discussions according to Oakley? A. Developing a good financial mindset. B. Lacking necessary life-planning skills. C. Tending to be financially inexperienced. D. Getting well-prepared for their first job. 34. What is Oakley’s advice on parents' educating children about finances? A. Figure out schools’ duties. B. Make financial plans for children. C. Attach importance to formal instructions. D. Offer real-life examples for informal education. 35. What is the purpose of mentioning the podcast K12 On Learning? A. To promote a new book by Joseph Oakley. B. To discuss the guidelines of financial goal-setting. C. To criticize existing financial education podcasts. D. To allow listeners easy access to Oakley’s advice. Dad is a busy mechanic. Miss Natasha got everyone's test papers, cleared her throat to announce the results and distributed the test papers among the students. Everyone was nervous about their scores that would be announced soon. Ali and Bob have been competitors since class one and each year either one of the two came first in the class. This year, there was tough competition between both of them, and they eagerly awaited the results. “Peter, 18,”announced Miss Natasha as she handed him his paper,“Eric, 16, Ali, 20, Bob, 19 ... and lastly Alia, 15.” When Miss Natasha had distributed the test papers in class, everyone found out that Ali beat Bob by one mark and topped the class. Everyone congratulated him and Ali was happy as he accepted everyone's congratulations. As Ali was about to put his paper in his bag, he noticed that by mistake Miss Natasha had given him two marks for an incorrect answer. He was shocked. He rechecked his answers and realized that all his answers were correct except for that one. Now if he informed Miss Natasha about it, he would not only lose two marks but also his first position. Considering the situation, he remained quiet and went home. But all day he kept thinking about it. Should he or shouldn't he tell Miss Natasha about it? He thought that it had been already done, and no one would notice if he didn't tell anyone, but then another thought crossed his mind. If he didn't tell the teacher about it and stayed the position-holder in class, he wouldn't rightfully take the position as it clearly belonged to Bob. This situation put Ali in a hard position. His parents always taught him to do the right thing, but doing the right thing here meant he would lose his first position. He remembered how everyone cheered for him and congratulated him in class. He knew that by informing the teacher about it, he would lose it all. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “My son, you are a brave and honest boy so just do what you think is right,”his mum continued. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 乾县第二中学2025-2026学年高三第二次阶段性测试 英语试题 本试卷满分150分,考试时间120分钟 注意事项: 1. What does the woman usually have for breakfast? I moved there from my hometown, Sydney, with my husband, Lee, who works as a photographer and often captures beautiful scenery of our journeys for my articles. Our Sydney life had become routine and we wanted a change of scenery and escape from office jobs to eat our way through Asia and tell stories along the way. Through work, my offices ranged from mountain lodges in northern Vietnam to tents in the jungles of Laos or diverse local villages in China. On top of my day to day work, Lee and I launched a travel blog called stranger talk, where we published the stories that magazines were not interested in. Our blog led us to incredible adventures, but apart from our blog readers, we had no one else to talk about our colorful life in Bangkok with. It was difficult to make friends in Thailand. I had a few Thai friends from work who I would have lunch with at the local market, but it was hard to break the cultural barrier. Without speaking the same language as them, I could never be in their inner circle. Lee and I realized we were lonely even though we have each other. We need the benefits of a well rounded friendship group. Therefore, we made the decision to pack our things and move back to Sydney. A Teen Creative Writing Release your creativity as a writer, while learning the tricks of the trade. While businesses that ignore the rule can be penalized, the authorities rarely step in. C. separate food waste from trash. D. Donate food scraps to charities. 25. What did Ms. Billings suggest Ms. Hannan do for her staff? A. Post the relevant instructions. B. Provide basic training. C. Replace trash containers. D. Make stricter rules. 26. What does the underlined word “penalized” in paragraph 4 mean? A Revised. B. Punished. C. Inspected. D. Recognized. 27. What can be inferred about the regulation’s impact? A. It’s rarely followed in practice. B. It strengthens business cooperation. C. It helps solve the public health issue. D. It promotes environmental improvement. C 25. A 26. B 27. 根据第一段中的“To tackle this, the state has a rule: Large food businesses must keep food waste out of the trash. (为解决这一问题,该州出台了一项规定:大型食品企业必须将食物垃圾与普通垃圾分开处理。)”可知,该州规定要求马萨诸塞州的大型食品企业将食物垃圾与普通垃圾分开。故选C项。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的““Our biggest challenge is getting the staff to follow the rules,” Ms. Hannan said. Ms. Billings responded by showing clear signs that could be posted in the kitchen as reminders. (汉南女士表示:“我们面临的最大挑战在于让员工遵守规定。”比林斯女士则回应称,她准备了一些醒目的标识,可以张贴在厨房内,用以提醒员工。)”可知,比林斯女士建议汉南女士为员工张贴相关指示标识。故选A项。 根据第四段中的“The state’s regulation applies to places producing over half a ton of waste per week. While businesses that ignore the rule can be penalized, the authorities rarely step in. (该州的规定适用于每周产生超过半吨垃圾的场所。虽然忽视该规定的企业可能会被penalized,但当局很少介入。)”可知,规定适用于每周产生超过半吨垃圾的场所,因此忽视规定的企业会被惩罚,此处“ignore the rule(忽视规定)”是违规行为,结合常识,违规行为通常会面临“处罚”,因此“penalized”意为“处罚”。故选B项。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段“Massachusetts has made more progress than other states with similar laws. Environmental groups hope to go further, encouraging residents to compost at home. Meanwhile, the law has also helped new composting companies grow.(马萨诸塞州比其他拥有类似法律的州取得了更多进展。环保组织希望能更进一步,鼓励居民在家进行堆肥。与此同时,该法律也帮助了新的堆肥公司发展。)”可知,该规定推动了堆肥发展、助力环保,由此可推断,该规定促进了环境改善。故选D项。 C If someone created a flying machine capable of tracking you down by listening for your voice, you might be terrified. C 29. A 30. D 31. 根据第二段“An auditory(听觉的) system would need to distinguish human cries from sounds that often happen in nature, such as animal calls and wind.(听觉系统需要能区分人类呼救声和自然界里也能听到的声音,如动物叫声和风声)”可知,这套听觉系统的功能是探测人类的尖叫声。故选A。 根据第一段“That concept is the focus for engineers at German’s Fraunhofer FIE Institute, who’ve built a drone to find people by detecting (探测) human screams. B。 D Financial education is not often taught to students in school, so the responsibility falls to the parents. B 33. C 34. D 35. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 He knew that by informing the teacher about it, he would lose it all. As he fought with his thoughts, his mum asked him,“What's the matter?”“Mum, what if doing the right thing would mean you would lose something?”he asked in reply.“Son, if it is the right thing to do, then I am sure you will be rewarded for it. A wrong thing may seem attractive at first, but if it is wrong, it will hurt us someday,” his mum said. “My son, you are a brave and honest boy so just do what you think is right,”his mum continued. The next day in class, Miss Natasha announced,“Today Ali has done what only a few of us would have the courage to do. He came to me and told me that I had mistakenly given him two marks and he was right about it, so the first position goes to Bob, not Ali.” Everyone, even Bob, was surprised by this development. After the class, Bob asked Ali,“Why did you do that?”Ali simply replied,“Because it was the right thing to do. 词汇激活 行为类 询问:ask / wonder/inquiry 回报:be rewarded for / pay off 宣布:announce/ declare 情绪类 吃惊:surprised / astonished / amazed 勇敢:courageous / brave 【点睛】[高分句型1] As he fought with his thoughts, his mum asked him, “What's the matter?”(运用了as引导时间状语从句) [高分句型2] He came to me and told me that I had mistakenly given him two marks and he was right about it, so the first position goes to Bob, not Ali.
