Here’s a look at some of the most unique and successful inventions.
The popsicle
Every kid loves to lick away on an icy pop on a hot summer day. In 1905, an 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson made the unplanned delicious discovery by leaving a glass of soda water on a cold porch overnight with a mixing stick inside it. He didn’t go into business straight away, but the idea stayed in his head for many years to come, until he patented and introduced the “Epsicle” in 1924.
The trampoline(弹床)
Inspired by the performance of the artists at a 1930s circus 16-year-old George Nissen wanted to create a device that would safely push gymnasts back into the air after landing. Then he worked to perfect the device and increase its bounce, and soon trademarked his trampoline. In 2000, he saw his humble trampoline climb to its greatest height ever, as an event in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Swimming flippers
Founding father Benjamin Franklin is well-known for dozens of inventions. His first notable lightbulb moment came at 11 years old. As a strong swimmer, he began wearing lilypad-shaped devices that slipped onto his hands, so that he could go faster in the water. While we moved them to our feet, the flipper is one of Franklin’s many time-tested successful inventions.
A safety device for textile mills (纺织厂)
Born in York, Maine in 1838, Margaret Knight was in textile mills from a young age — and witnessed a serious accident at 12. She wanted to stop that from happening again, so young Margaret developed a safety device that would stop production on the machines when there was something caught in them. By the time she was a teenager, her invention had been used in many of the mills.
1. Who developed an invention accidentally?
A. Frank Epperson. B. George Nissen.
C. Benjamin Franklin. D. Margaret Knight.
2. What made Margaret Knight develop the safety device for textile mills?
A. Her interest in machine design since childhood.
B. A terrible accident she saw when she was young.
C Her experience of being injured by mill machines.
D. The request from textile mill owners to improve machines.
3. What do the four inventions have in common?
A. They have changed people’s basic living habits.
B. They have achieved recognition and application over time.
C. They were first made using simple and easy-to-get materials.
D They were patented by the inventors shortly after they were made.
B
My parents did not bat an eye when I was still playing with Barbies in sixth grade. My classmates were not so understanding. 12-year-old girls weren’t supposed to play with Barbies and baby dolls anymore. Due to all the teases (取笑), I started playing with the dolls less and less and put them in a large storage bin under my twin bed. It was so full that I couldn’t even attach a lid to it.
My cat, Strawberry, would sleep with me each night and greet me every day when I got home from school. When we found out that Strawberry was pregnant (怀孕的), I couldn’t have been more excited. I got a big basket and as many old sheets as I could find, so Strawberry and her kittens would be comfortable. As Strawberry got bigger, she began to sleep in my bed less and less and in her basket more and more.
Two days before Strawberry’s due date, I was playing at a friend’s house. My mom came to get me early because she hadn’t seen Strawberry all afternoon and was worried about her. I immediately jumped in the car, knowing that she was probably hiding somewhere having kittens. As we drove home, my mom explained that my brothers had their friends over and were being awfully loud, so Strawberry probably didn’t feel safe in the basket I made for her.
When I ran into my room, I heard the cries of tiny kittens. I looked all over my room, but I couldn’t find where the cries were coming from. Finally, I searched under my bed, and the cries got louder. I managed to pull out my Barbie bin and found sweet, tiny kittens surrounded by a sea of blood-covered Barbies.
I wasn’t as upset as I thought I would be. It was time to let go of my Barbie dolls. Sometimes, childhood slips away without you realizing it, and other times it ends with something really important, like a bin filled with bloody Barbies.
4. Why did the author stop playing with Barbies as much?
A. She lost interest in them. B. Her parents asked her to.
C. She had no time to spare. D. Her classmates laughed at her.
5. What can we know about Strawberry after she was pregnant?
A. She was feeling unwell. B. She wanted to be alone.
C. She preferred her basket. D. She disliked playing outside.
6. Why did the author rush home?
A. To search for lost Strawberry. B. To keep an appointment with her friends.
C. To check on kittens’ condition. D. To ask her brother for help quickly.
7. What does the author try to express through the text?
A. Humans and animals can live in harmony. B. Time is the best medicine for wounds.
C. Nothing is more important than friends. D. Childhood ends in unexpected ways.
C
Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have designed a new robot named E-BAR (Elderly Bodily Assistance Robot) for seniors.
Ninety-two percent of elderly Americans strongly wish to remain in their own homes rather than move to assisted living facilities, but falls continue to be the leading cause of injury for those over 65. In fact, nearly twenty-five percent of elderly Americans — nearly 14 million people — fall each year.
“Many older adults underestimate the risk of fall, while others overestimate the risk and may not exercise, leading to declining mobility,” says study author Harry Asada. Most elderly individuals resist wearing restrictive devices despite needing assistance, and switching between different assistive technologies can be perilous for older adults trying to manage independently.
The robot functions like an invisible safety net positioned behind the user. Its U-shaped arm supports users under the arms or forearms, helping with tasks like bending to pick up things or getting in and out of bathtub — activities that many avoid due to the fear of falling. It has four wheels that move in any direction, staying steady even when pushed. However, what separates it from existing eldercare robots is its airbags that fill with air in less than 250 milliseconds to catch someone during a fall. The system predicts balance problems early, using sensors to detect the first signs of imbalance. E-BAR also has a lifting mechanism that copies how a caregiver helps someone stand up, following natural body movements. This makes standing from a chair easier and safer.
“Eldercare conditions can change every few weeks or months,” says Asada. “We’d like to provide continuous support as a person’s disability or mobility changes with age.” One-fifth to one-quarter of eldercare positions in the United States are unfilled. With nursing home costs averaging over $108,000 annually, technology that delays or prevents institutional care could provide significant economic benefits while respecting elderly individuals’ preferences for independence.
8. What can be learnt about most elderly Americans?
A. They expect to live at home. B. They lack confidence in their balance.
C. They aren’t familiar with assistive technology. D. They’re suffering from loneliness.
9. What does the underlined word “perilous” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Popular. B. Dangerous. C. Important. D. Convenient.
10. What is special about E-BAR?
A. It has four wheels moving one way. B. It is equipped with fast-acting airbags.
C. It gives a warning before a fall happens. D. It has some U-shaped arms for bathing.
11. What does the last paragraph imply about E-BAR?
A. It needs to be improved. B. It’ll be priced very high.
C. It has a promising market. D. It’ll reach customers soon.
D
The area of the deep seafloor that’s been directly visualized is roughly equal to the state of Rhode Island, less than 0.001% of the globe’s deep seafloor, according to a new study.
Sunlight can’t reach below 200 meters, where the waters turn cold and dark. This is the region of the ocean that’s considered “deep”. “When you’re down there with a remotely operated vehicle, you can only see a very tiny bit of the deep seafloor,” says Katy Croff Bell, who led this new study. By building a database of more than 43,000 trips down, her team found most exploring was done near the U.S., Japan and New Zealand, while areas like the Indian Ocean remain almost untouched.
Bell says that even though the deep ocean might be out of sight and out of mind for most people the currents down there bring oxygen and key nutrients up towards the surface. “All of these things are connected, and impact us in so many different ways,” she says. What little has been explored beneath the deep ocean suggests that it can have dramatically different biological communities that support different kinds of living things. Past explorations to the deep have revealed completely unexpected forms of life. For example, in the 1970s, researchers discovered tiny organisms that did not depend at all on the sun and photosynthesis (光合作用), and instead got their energy from chemical reactions.
Deep sea expert Jeffrey Karson says this is the first time he’s ever seen a well-documented number that shows clearly what’s been seen of the deep ocean floor so far. He would have assumed the area seen by humanity was less than 1% of the total, he says, but was still surprised the share would be “such a tiny number”.
“We’re spending a lot trying to understand other planets. And yet right here on our own planet, we know so little of what’s going on in this area that covers about two-thirds of our planet,” says Karson.
12. What did Bell and her team try to do about the deep seafloor?
A. Make a map of its unexplored regions. B. Assess its explored area.
C. Study its diverse life forms. D. Identify its exploration hot spots.
13. Why does the deep ocean matter?
A. It can speed up photosynthesis. B. It affects global temperatures.
C. It keeps nutrients on the seafloor. D. It may hold unique ecosystems.
14. What does Karson think of the present ocean research?
A. Inconsistent. B. Unsatisfactory. C. Fruitful. D. Complex.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Tiny Organism from Ocean Depths B. Unusual Ecosystems in Dark Ocean
C. Deep Seafloor: Mostly Unknown Territories D. Seafloor Exploration: History and Methods

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last week, my flight home took off right on time at 1:00 p.m. But as we neared our destination, the pilot’s voice came, “Folks, we can’t land due to dangerous lightning storms and strong winds.” We circled for two hours before flying to a small airport 150 miles away.
Getting off the plane, I found the tiny terminal (航站楼) was packed wall-to-wall with hundreds from three other flights. Nervous people checked phones often, waiting to be rebooked.
After 45 minutes, my stomach started growling (咕咕叫). I only ate a chocolate bar at 7:00 a.m. and missed lunch in the rush to catch the flight. That was when I noticed a snack shop. I hurried in and grabbed a bag of cookies, a candy bar, a bottle of lemon water, and three rice bars — figuring they’d keep well if I had to stay overnight.
When I came back, I checked my phone. To my surprise, I was rebooked on a 7:30 p.m. flight to my original destination! I stepped onto the plane and it was filled with passengers slowly. Then, a flight attendant announced, “This is a temporary flight. We didn’t have time to prepare in-flight meals or snacks, so there won’t be any food service today. We apologize for the inconvenience.” I nodded, feeling lucky I’d grabbed extra snacks earlier.
At the attendant’s words, the young man next to me shook his head desperately and rubbed his stomach. Noticing me look over, he smiled weakly. “I had to rush to catch the flight this morning,” he said. “No time for breakfast, and up to now, I’ve eaten nothing. My stomach’s been growling like crazy.” I noticed he looked pale and was sweating heavily. He said he was suffering from hypoglycemia (低血糖) due to his extended hunger. I knew that if a person was suffering from the disease, they would pass out quickly without eating immediately, and it could even be life-threatening.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I realized I must take quick action.

When I ran into my room I heard the cries of tiny kittens.

【答案】8. A 9. B 10. B 11. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。MIT研发E-BAR机器人,可辅助老年人居家活动、防跌倒,契合其居家意愿,还能缓解养老岗位空缺与高成本问题。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Ninety-two percent of elderly Americans strongly wish to remain in their own homes rather than move to assisted living facilities, but falls continue to be the leading cause of injury for those over 65.(92%的美国老年人强烈希望留在自己家中,而不是搬到有辅助生活设施的地方,但其跌倒仍是65岁以上人群受伤的主要原因。)”可知,绝大多数美国老年人期望在家中生活,而非前往养老机构。故选A项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“Most elderly individuals resist wearing restrictive devices despite needing assistance, and switching between different assistive technologies can be perilous for older adults trying to manage independently.(尽管需要帮助,大多数老年人仍抗拒佩戴限制性设备,而对于试图独立生活的老年人来说,在不同辅助技术之间切换可能是perilous 的。)”可知,老年人本身对辅助设备接受度低,频繁切换设备会增加其独立生活的难度与风险。结合语境可推测“perilous”意为“危险的”,与选项B“Dangerous”含义一致。故选B项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“However, what separates it from existing eldercare robots is its airbags that fill with air in less than 250 milliseconds to catch someone during a fall.(然而,它与现有养老机器人的不同之处在于,其配备的安全气囊能在不到250毫秒内充气,以在跌倒时接住人。)”可知,E-BAR的独特之处在于其配备了反应迅速的安全气囊。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“One-fifth to one-quarter of eldercare positions in the United States are unfilled. With nursing home costs averaging over $108,000 annually, technology that delays or prevents institutional care could provide significant economic benefits while respecting elderly individuals’ preferences for independence.(美国五分之一到四分之一的养老岗位空缺。养老院的年均成本超过10.8万美元,而这种能延迟或避免机构照护的技术,在尊重老年人独立意愿的同时,还能带来显著的经济效益。)”可知,美国养老岗位缺口大且养老成本高,而E-BAR既能满足老年人居家独立生活的需求,又能降低经济成本,由此可推断其具有广阔的市场前景。故选C项。
Bell says that even though the deep ocean might be out of sight and out of mind for most people, the currents down there bring oxygen and key nutrients up towards the surface.
12 What did Bell and her team try to do about the deep seafloor?
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. B 15. C
【解析】

细节理解题。根据第二段中“By building a database of more than 43,000 trips down, her team found most exploring was done near the U.S., Japan and New Zealand, while areas like the Indian Ocean remain almost untouched.(通过建立一个包含4.3万多次下潜记录的数据库,她的团队发现大部分探测活动集中在美国、日本和新西兰附近,而印度洋等区域几乎未被触及。)”可知,Bell和她的团队试图评估深海海底已被探索的区域。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“What little has been explored beneath the deep ocean suggests that it can have dramatically different biological communities that support different kinds of living things.(在深海之下被探索得很少的地方表明,那里可能有截然不同的生物群落,支持着不同种类的生物。)”可知,深海之所以重要,是因为它可能拥有独特的生态系统。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中““We’re spending a lot trying to understand other planets. And yet right here on our own planet, we know so little of what’s going on in this area that covers about two-thirds of our planet,” says Karson.(“我们投入了大量精力去了解其他行星。然而,就在我们自己的星球上,对于这片覆盖了地球约三分之二面积的区域,我们对其状况却知之甚少,” Karson说。)”可知,Karson认为目前的海洋研究是不令人满意的。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“The area of the deep seafloor that’s been directly visualized is roughly equal to the state of Rhode Island, less than 0.001% of the globe’s deep seafloor, according to a new study.(根据一项新的研究,已经直接可视化的深海海底面积大致相当于罗得岛州的面积,不到全球深海海底面积的0.001%。)”

Li Hua
【答案】One possible version:
Dear Lisa,
I’m happy to tell you I got second prize in our community’s old object transformation competition last week!
My work was a lamp made of an old glass bottle and some used cloth. I painted the bottle blue with white star patterns, and sewed the cloth into a cover. It looks really nice when lit, casting soft star-shaped shadows.
The competition taught me to be creative and see value in old things. Old things aren’t useless — with a little creativity, we can reuse them, cut down on waste, and do our part for the planet. What a great experience it was!
Yours,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I realized I must take quick action.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When he recovered, the young man thanked me again and again for my snacks.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
I realized I must take quick action. Without delay I opened my bag and pulled out the rice bars and cookies. “Here, have some food now.” I urged, and placed them into the young man’s shaking hands. His eyes showed great relief as he struggled to open a rice bar and took a large bite. I watched carefully as he ate. After a while, his face took on a healthy color. I felt relieved to see his violent shaking lessen with each bite.
When he recovered, the young man thanked me again and again for my snacks. “You really saved me,” he said, wiping sweat from his forehead. We spent the remaining flight chatting quietly, sharing the rest of the cookies and candy bar. What began as a stressful delay was transformed into an unexpected moment of human connection. Though I was so hungry, having given him most of my food, I felt deeply happy. Helping a stranger in need turned my journey into a truly meaningful experience.
