I saw the notice about your dance classes. I am interested in learning to dance, but before I sign up I have a few questions for you.
First, where will your classes take place? I can travel a little bit for them, but I don’t want to go too far. Second, do you teach from three p.m. to five p.m. on Fridays? That would be the best time for me because I can’t go to your classes on Tuesday or Thursday evenings.

I have been learning English since I was 10 years old. Everything I was taught at school was about tense (时态), plural rules and other grammar. Every day, my teacher required us to copy new words 10 times. I was bored of memorizing vocabulary and grammar rules. Gradually, learning English became something I disliked.
When I was in 10th grade, my parents bought me a computer. From then on, it became my best helper. I could learn whatever I wanted. I began to listen to music and watch TV shows. The first TV show that I watched was Hannah Montana. It was very funny, and I picked up quite a lot of vocabulary from it, which was an unforgettable learning experience. It was also when I fell in love with the language.
I remember back then, I also downloaded (下载) a lot of English songs and listened to them every day. Besides, I discovered many websites where people from all over the world shared cultures with each other. I made a lot of foreign friends there, and we talked about everything in life.
At first, I thought the only reason people learned English was that they wanted to communicate with each other. Not until I lost myself in the language did I realize that the language itself was the best way to create a strong connection between me and the endless knowledge of the world.
I can see a huge improvement in my English skills. Thanks to English, I have learned much more about the world around me. The journey towards language fluency (流利) is not always easy, and I still have a long way to go. I won’t, however, give up on it. If you don’t know where you are, if you’re not sure what to do next, just do whatever you love.

People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ▲ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves (波动).
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can tell chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.

①So far, China has successfully sent a large number of satellites (卫星) and spaceships into space. Space scientists have been greatly inspired (赋予灵感) by the old stories and ancient famous people when giving them names.
②Since thousands of years ago, Chinese people have dreamed of going to the moon. Chang’e Flies to the Moon is one of the most popular stories. As you can see, China’s first man-made satellite to circle around the moon was named Chang’e I. More interestingly, the moon rover (巡视器) was named after the Jade Rabbit, who is the partner of Chang’e in the story. These old stories carry people’s best wishes and dreams. With the development of science and technology, our scientists have made them come true.
③Kua Fu Runs After the Sun is another story to show how much ancient Chinese people wanted to know about the unknown world. Now, Kua Fu is going with the scientists to “visit” the sun, because we have a space project called Kua Fu Mission.
④Besides the ancient stories, space scientists also get ideas from ancient famous people. For example, Mozi, an ancient scientist, discovered that light travels in a straight line over 2,000 years ago. His discovery made space study take a big step at that time. So, China’s first quantum (量子) science satellite was named Mozi, making China the first country in the world to achieve quantum communication between satellites and the ground.
⑤From such simple things as giving names to the satellites, we can see how great our traditional culture is and what influence it has on our modern science and technology.

A. It moves around the moon. B. It “visits” the sun with the scientists.

D. To tell how traditional Chinese culture influences our space science.

阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,完成下列各题。
Many girls today love xiaoxianrou, or “little fresh meat”, which refers to young male stars who are delicate (精致的) and cute. Lin Bing just wants to be that man, so he has spent around 80,000 yuan on his face since his first plastic surgery (整形手术) four years ago. “Getting plastic surgeries is just as usual as body building. Both make men more handsome and confident,” says the 33-year-old young man.
Lin Bing is among a growing number of Chinese men using plastic surgeries to change their physical appearance (外貌) to increase their self-confidence. In 2024, the market for beauty medicine in China was worth more than 695 billion yuan. Surprisingly, around 25 percent of customers were males, while this was only 5 percent in 2020, according to a report by plastic surgery social networking app Gengmei.
There is a rising trend (潮流) of young men turning to plastic surgeries; most male customers are in their teens or 20s. “Some men just want to please themselves, while others hope to improve their possibility in the job market,” says Wang Jun, the president of Gengmei. “Men are under the same social stress as women and their confidence and competitiveness would be more or less weakened by facial and body weaknesses.”
However, Fan Jufeng, an expert from Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, does not encourage people, no matter men or women, to “blindly” go under the knife. Fan points out that people should think about the risks of plastic surgeries at first.
Fan also warned (警告) the public of the bad influences of live streaming celebrities (流量明星) who spread the misunderstanding—“Pretty goes above all else.” He advised that whether to have plastic surgeries should depend on personal needs. Fan says, “Think twice about it. After all, a rich and beautiful inner beauty is far more important than a pretty face.”

XINHUA—To reduce pressure on students Junior high school students in Beijing will only be scored on six of their 10 senior high school entrance exams from 2025, while the remaining four tests will be given a letter grade (等级) A, B, C, D. The Beijing Municipal Education Commission announced on Tuesday, Sep. 26, 2023 that the scoring system and evaluation methodology of the exams would be changed to better reflect (反映) the development of the cultural, physical, political and psychological skills of students moving up from junior to senior high.
In China, high school education includes junior high (from Grade 7 to 9) and senior high (from Grade 10 to 12). The six subjects that will continue to have exam results scored are Chinese, math, English, physics, physical education, ethics and rule of law. The four subjects that will receive a letter grade are geography, biology, chemistry and history. A few high schools in Beijing are already making changes.
Li Yi, director of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, said the present exam system depends too heavily on rote memorization, that is to say, the students only need to memorize the things their teachers teach them without thinking. He also said that teachers have little time to spend on experimental teaching methods and extracurricular activities. To make the exams more colorful, while the chemistry, history, geography and biology exams will be given a letter grade, the ethics and rule of law exam will be open-book to encourage students to have more analysis-thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Thanks to English I have learned much more about the world around me.

56. What do we know about Chang’e I according to the passage?
A. It moves around the moon. B. It “visits” the sun with the scientists.

(①=Paragraph 1 ②=Paragraph 2,…)
A. B. C. D.
59. What’s the writer’s main purpose of writing the passage?
A. To spread the traditional Chinese culture.
B. To explain how our scientists develop space.
C. To introduce the achievements in our science and technology.
D. To tell how traditional Chinese culture influences our space science.
