In my childhood, my mother spent her evening hours doing something for someone else. Sometimes she knitted (编织) hats for babies, and at other times, she cooked chicken soup for sick neighbors. Therefore, I wasn’t surprised when one evening my mother announced she had undertaken a new project.
“I am going to telephone seniors,” said my mother. “Every night? But you don’t even know these people.” “It doesn’t matter,” she said. “What’s important is that I listen.” I was sixteen years old and couldn’t understand why my mother was willing to spend her evenings talking to strangers. She had friends and my two older sisters to call if she felt lonely. “They will talk your ear off. Some people didn’t even stop to catch breath,” I said.
My attitude didn’t stop my mother’s enthusiasm for the project. That evening, she settled on the sofa and dialed. For a while, I listened as she asked the woman on the other line about her day and what she had eaten for dinner. When she finished the call, I said, “Why do you care whether she had cookies or rice pudding for dessert?” My mother grasped one of my hands and gave it a slight squeeze. “I’m the only person she talked to today.”
It took me more than thirty years to fully understand the meaning of that statement. Now, as my mother is nearing eighty, I find myself thinking about those nightly calls she used to make. I am often the only person who telephones my mother, and sometimes I’m the only person she speaks to all day. I ask her what she cooked for dinner, but mostly I just listen as she describes a walk she took, or how her dog Lucky stole foods from the refrigerator. I realize that my mother’s calls were life lines that ensured housebound seniors remained connected to the world. Without her, their world would have been empty.
24. What is the mother’s purpose of calling the seniors?
A. To care about their life.
B. To know what they eat for dinner.
C. To make them feel less lonely.
D. To teach them how to make desserts.
25. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. They will talk all the time on the phone.
B. They will blame others’ wrong doings.
C. They will be tired of listening to others.
D. They will make you feel really satisfied.
26. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The author started to telephone seniors as her mother.
B. The author realized the value of her mother’s efforts.
C. The author’s mother preferred to live alone.
D. The author’s mother still remains disconnected to the world.
27. What is the suitable title for the passage?
A. Call parents often, love them always
B. Mother’s evenings
C. A new project
D. Nightly calls, lifeline calls
C
Nowadays, handwriting seems to become less necessary, for young children learn to tap and touch screens before they have even learned to pick up a pencil or tie their shoelaces. Most of our written communication is done through texting on mobile phones or typing on a keyboard. And voice recognition softwares are becoming more and more advanced —making even keyboards unnecessary!
So, are handwriting skills important to your child? Actually, handwriting is an exercise in eye-hand coordination (协调), an important part of visual-motor (视觉运动) skills, which are connected with achievements in study. Scientists found that developing fine visual-motor skills in early childhood can lead to not only writing success, but better performance in reading and math in elementary school. It was also found that kids who fail to write neatly and efficiently are often accused of being lazy, and this may affect their behavior and self-worth. Moreover, a study showed that when a group of children were asked to come up with ideas for an article, the ones with better handwriting were more active and had quicker minds. In some ways, handwriting helps their brains’ development.
The first attempts at writing can be challenging for pre-school children —whose fine motor skills are not yet fully developed. But some skills to prepare for handwriting are simple to build at home and in preschool. Parents should provide lots of opportunities for kids to copy and draw shapes and simple pictures in early childhood before letters are introduced. Let your child copy your shapes in sand, or with chalks on a board before trying to draw the shapes on their own. Encourage your child to spend less time on electronic devices and more time on activities to improve eye-hand coordination.
Let’s face it —technology is certain to continue developing and more research is needed to find the best ways to teach handwriting to young children. But, there’s plenty of evidence that the handwriting practice can provide young children with a good start in developing skills needed for a healthy and successful journey in school.
28. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A. Handwriting is used less frequently now.
B. Handwriting is totally replaced by software.
C. Handwriting is easy to learn on a touch screen.
D. Handwriting is more difficult than typewriting.
29. How does the author explain the benefits of handwriting?
A. By presenting some research findings.
B. By giving some news reports on hand-writing.
C. By mentioning examples of the kids around him.
D. By providing data about pupils with good grades.
30. What does the author suggest parents do?
A. Keep young children away from electronic devices.
B. Teach pre-school children to write letters with chalks.
C. Help children get ready for handwriting before school.
D. Encourage children to face writing challenges bravely.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Does poor handwriting really mean being lazy?
B. How can handwriting affect children’s self-confidence?
C. Should handwriting be taken seriously in children’s growth?
D. Should homework be done through handwriting or typewriting?
D
New era (时代) requires a new vocabulary. Will we still talk about the “mobile” phone when all phones are mobile, or when they are implanted within us?
Technology is everywhere nowadays, especially at work. Some people are really good at using all the cool new tools that keep popping up. They have something called a TQ, or technology quotient. Think of it like a superpower for understanding the latest tech stuff that our great-grandparents would have found really impossible. Having a high TQ means you’re good at using all the cool new things that not everyone knows about yet.
The examples are common and becoming more and more frequent. For the parents it might be a home-school video class. For the brand manager it might be search engine boosting, which helps the brand’s content rank higher in search results. And for the doctor, it might be the role of artificial intelligence in supporting the analysis (分析) of a CT scan. TQ tries to quantify our ability to make wise use of present technologies and to quickly adapt, embrace (拥抱) and make use of future creations. This adoption is of great importance from a variety of perspectives, from social to business. One trip into the world of ChatGPT and we can see how the way Al and search interact and operate is changing for just about everyone.
Any Mom or Dad can understand the value of IQ and EQ in predicting the potential for a child’s success. But what about technology? The ability for the child and the teacher to understand, embrace and assimilate technology will be a key aspect of their lives as we speed into the future. We are increasingly defined by technology and our active participation in everything from smart phones to Facebook. It might just be time for the basic human needs of food, water and shelter to include technology too. And when that happens, it just might be a good idea to measure it.
While this shift brings challenges, it’s unstoppable. As TQ rises, it will combine with IQ and EQ, reshaping how we live, work, and learn — turning adaptability with tech into a measurable advantage.
32. What is TQ according to the text?
A. Ability to use new technologies. B. Skill of repairing high-tech products.
C. Talent to follow modern changes. D. Speed of learning new languages.
33. Which of the following people has a high TQ?
A. A doctor who analyzes CT scans with AI assistance.
B. A manager who often uses modern search engines.
C. A grandparent who finds new tech devices challenging.
D. A mom who watches videos of her child’s school life.
34. What does the underlined word “assimilate” in the fourth paragraph mean?
A. Depend on. B. Take in. C. Lie in. D. Insist on.
35. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Why Are IQ and EQ Important for TQ? B. What Makes TQ the New Intelligence?
C. How Has TQ Changed in the Modern Era? D. Where to Start Adapting to TQ Changes?

Last weekend, I went to Mark’s new house nearby a forest for a little get-together. After lunch when I was talking with him and his wife Cody, he asked me, “Hey Thoran, have you ever been to a secret spot?” Before I could even finish saying no, Cody and Mark were already at the door with their jackets on. And the next moment we were heading out into the forest with a camera, a fishing net and a plastic bucket(桶).
We walked through the forest along a path by a small river. Breathing the fresh air, we three talked and laughed all the way.
“Hey! What are you guys doing?” Someone suddenly shouted from behind. Mark and Cody’s eyes immediately widened, and without a word they started running. I had no choice but to follow them, getting my shoes wet and dirty with mud. We probably ran for about 10 minutes before Mark and Cody slowed down. I stopped to catch my breath and asked, “Who was that?”
Mark replied, “The most annoying neighbor ever. If he caught up with us, there’s no telling what could happen. He is always making fun of us. I dislike him.” We kept walking on for a few more minutes. Then a beautiful lake appeared before our eyes. “Wow! Amazing!” I shouted and could hardly hold back my excitement. The lake was large and the water was deep and blue, looking so peaceful with tall trees around it.

Text 1
W: What’s up, John? Why the long face? Aren’t you satisfied with the test results?
M: I could have done better. Well, maybe next time …
Text 2
M: Are you sure about everything tomorrow? I don’t want to get caught in a shower there, right in the middle of the park.
W: Relax. It’s going to be fine. I’ve checked the weather and prepared all the snacks. We’re leaving at 9:00 sharp.
Text 3
W: Will you let me drive today?
M: I know you got your driving licence one year ago, but have you done any practice recently?
W: No, but I promise I won’t damage your car.
Text 4
W: The supermarket downstairs is closed. I will need to dig into the fridge to make a simple dinner.
M: Wouldn’t it be easier to go to a Chinese restaurant?
W: Yes! Check which one is open nearby.
Text 5
M: Well, I think the party has started. We wasted too much time on the way.
W: The invitation says the party starts at 2:00 p.m. We still have 10 minutes.
M: But look here, it says all participants must enter 15 minutes in advance.
W: Oh no.
Text 6
W: Look at this house. It looks fantastic!
M: Oh, yeah. I bet it has a long history judging from its style.
W: Don’t be so sure. It’s just been rebuilt. Check out the bricks. They are brand new.
M: You have a point. Now I see what you mean.
W: With modern technology, that’s not so hard. If you are an expert, you can easily make it look like it’s 200 years old.
M: Let’s ask someone whether we can get a tour inside.
W: Great idea. Maybe we can if it is for sale.
Text 7
W: What do you think if we leave earlier today and hang out in the city before the meeting with Duggan & Murphy? I want to check out a bookstore on Howard Street. I will definitely miss this city after the project is completed.
M: Certainly. When do you want to leave?
W: How about at 2:00 p.m.?
M: Okay. We can take a bus or drive so that we can enjoy the scenery along the way.
W: You know, Duggan & Murphy is located in the city center. It’s always crowded in the rush hour. Getting there might take hours. It won’t be convenient.
M: Sure. We’ll take the subway then. How about we break for lunch at the cafeteria around the corner now?
W: Sounds great.
Text 8
M: Judy, I’m thinking of going to see the basketball game next week. Will you come along?
W: Me? Really? Don’t you usually go with Terry?
M: Yes, but he’ll be out of town for business then.
W: Have you got the tickets yet?
M: I made a booking on the official website, but I haven’t made the payment. I’ll do it tomorrow.
W: Why don’t we buy them at the ticket office the day before the game? What if our plans change?
M: It might be at least twice as expensive that way.
W: Oh, I see. I need a babysitter for Helen on that day. Is it on Saturday?
M: Yep.
W: It might be challenging. Saturdays tend to be busy.
M: Perhaps you could offer higher pay to the babysitter.
W: I’ll try.
Text 9
W: This is unacceptable. Can I speak to your manager?
M: Yes, but you have to wait. He is assisting another client at the moment.
W: Fine, I’ll wait. I can’t believe I was charged for that.
M: Let me explain one more time. You see, to avoid any additional charges, you need to use your credit card at least once a month. Otherwise, $15 would be automatically collected monthly.
W: Why wasn’t I aware of this policy?
M: I’m not exactly sure, but I have your signature right here.
W: Well, I signed lots of documents when I was opening the account here. I didn’t read everything. Don’t you think this kind of information should have been pointed out?
M: Please forgive me. That’s our fault.
W: That’s unbelievable. Even though my card is still valid for another year, I want to close my account and get my money back. In cash, please.
M: I’m sorry, we can’t do that. My manager has nearly finished. I’ll lead the way.
W: Okay.

B
【答案】24 C 25. A 26. B 27. D
根据第二段中的““It doesn’t matter,” she said. “What’s important is that I listen.”(“没关系,”她说。“重要的是我倾听。”)”以及第三段中的“My mother grasped one of my hands and gave it a slight squeeze. “I’m the only person she talked to today.”(妈妈抓住我的一只手,轻轻捏了一下。“我是她今天唯一和她说话的人。”)”可知,老年人一天中只有作者的母亲给他打电话,由此可以推断,老年人很孤单,所以母亲作为一个倾听者给老年人打电话就是为了不让老人们减少一些他们的孤独。故选C项。
【25题详解】
词义猜测题。根据空前的“She had friends and my two older sisters to call if she felt lonely.(如果她感到孤独,她有朋友和我的两个姐姐可以打电话。)” 故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“It took me more than thirty years to fully understand the meaning of that statement.(我花了三十多年的时间才完全理解这句话的含义。)”以及“I realize that my mother’s calls were life lines that ensured housebound seniors remained connected to the world. Without her, their world would have been empty.(我意识到我母亲的电话是确保居家老年人与世界保持联系的生命线。没有她,他们的世界将是空的。)”可知,作者终于在30年后明白了母亲这样做是让更多的老人与世界关联,不让老人觉得自己的世界太孤单,由此可推断出作者明白了母亲这样做的价值和意义。故选B项。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据首段中的“In my childhood, my mother spent her evening hours doing something for someone else.(在我的童年时代,我的母亲在晚上为别人做一些事情。)”和“Therefore, I wasn’t surprised when one evening my mother announced she had undertaken a new project.(因此,有一天晚上,当我母亲宣布她承担了一个新项目时,我并不感到惊讶。)”以及最后一段中的“I realize that my mother’s calls were life lines that ensured housebound seniors remained connected to the world. Without her, their world would have been empty.(我意识到我母亲的电话是确保居家老年人与世界保持联系的生命线。没有她,他们的世界将是空的。)”并结合全文的内容可知,作者的母亲晚上给老年人打电话成了老年人与世界联系的生命线,让他们不会觉得太孤单,综上所述,本文的标题为“夜间通话,生命线通话”符合文章主题。故选D项。
A 29. A 30. C 31. C
根据文章第一段第一、二句话“Nowadays, handwriting seems to become less necessary, for young children learn to tap and touch screens before they have even learned to pick up a pencil or tie their shoelaces. Most of our written communication is done through texting on mobile phones or typing on a keyboard. ”(如今,手写似乎变得不那么必要了,因为年幼的孩子甚至在学会拿起铅笔或系鞋带之前就已经学会了敲击和触摸屏幕。我们的大部分书面交流都是通过手机短信或键盘打字完成的。)可推知,随着高科技的发展,书写在交流中被使用得越来越少。故选A。
根据第二段中的“Scientists found…,It was also found that…, a study showed that…” 故选A。
根据第三段第三句话“But some skills to prepare for handwriting are simple to build at home and in preschool. ”(但是,在家里和幼儿园里,准备书写的一些技能很容易培养。)可知,作者建议父母应该帮助孩子们在上学前就形成准备写字的一些技能。故选C。
31. 标题判断题。通读全文可知,作者先是提出了书写被用的越来越少的这一现象,然后用科学研究的结果表明书写的收益多多,最后对家长们提出建议,鼓励孩子们多书写。所以“在孩子的成长过程中,应该认真对待书写吗?”符合本文大意,适合做标题。故选C。

A 33. A 34. B 35. B
根据第二段中“Having a high TQ means you’re good at using all the cool new things that not everyone knows about yet.(拥有高TQ意味着你擅长使用所有那些并非每个人都知道的酷炫新事物)”以及第三段中“TQ tries to quantify our ability to make wise use of present technologies and to quickly adapt, embrace (拥抱) and make use of future creations.(TQ试图量化我们明智利用现有技术以及快速适应、接受和利用未来创造物的能力)”可知,TQ指的是使用新技术的能力。故选A。
根据第三段中“TQ tries to quantify our ability to make wise use of present technologies and to quickly adapt, embrace and make use of future creations.(TQ试图量化我们明智利用现有技术、快速适应、接纳并利用未来创新的能力)”及举例“And for the doctor, it might be the role of artificial intelligence in supporting the analysis of a CT scan.(对于医生来说,这可能是人工智能在辅助CT扫描分析中所起的作用)”可知,借助AI辅助分析CT扫描的医生善于利用新技术,拥有高TQ。故选A。
根据第四段中“The ability for the child and the teacher to understand, embrace and assimilate technology will be a key aspect of their lives as we speed into the future.(随着我们加速进入未来,孩子和老师理解、接受和assimilate技术的能力将成为他们生活的关键方面)”可知,assimilate与understand(理解)、embrace(接受)并列,应为“吸收、接纳”的意思,与take in(吸收)意思相近。
根据全文内容,尤其是第二段中“They have something called a TQ, or technology quotient.(他们有一种叫做TQ或科技商数的东西)”和最后一段中“As TQ rises, it will combine with IQ and EQ, reshaping how we live, work, and learn — turning adaptability with tech into a measurable advantage.(随着TQ的提升,它将与智商和情商相结合,重塑我们的生活方式、工作方式和学习方式——将技术适应能力转化为可衡量的优势)”可知,文章主要讲述了TQ作为新的智力指标的重要性,以及它如何与IQ和EQ相结合,影响我们的生活、工作和学习。B选项“What Makes TQ the New Intelligence?(是什么让TQ成为新的智力指标?)”

Hearing that, I quickly came over to Mark but fell into the lake.
"Help ! Help ! Help !" I was so frightened and cried for help. Mark and Cody tried to help me but none of us could swim. Struggling in the water for a while, I felt tired, helpless and hopeless and then I found myself lifted by someone.
