I never realized how much public speaking came with being a writer. After my first three books, no one asked me to speak publicly, which I was fine with because I always hated it.
Then, just before my fourth book came out, I was invited to a book festival. I thought I knew what to expect: an interviewer sitting with me on stage, talking about my writing process. I wasn’t comfortable with this either, but I said yes.
The night before my appearance, an organizer showed me the place: a small tent in the town square. There was an event happening, and I noticed there was no interviewer or table. The author was standing alone, speaking to about 80 people. I simply watched in horror.
“How long do the talks last?” I asked. “About 50 minutes,” said the organizer. “We like to leave time for questions.”
My mind went into survival mode: In just hours, I’d be pushed out of a plane. It was time to fashion a parachute (降落伞). Back in my hotel room, I quickly put together a talk using old stories, recent embarrassing moments and parts of the book I was supposed to promote (推广). With my heart racing, I walked to the tent and read the words aloud.
It went OK. There were some laughs and some awkward silences. But the tent didn’t fall down, and I didn’t run away! There’s no secret to overcoming a fear of public speaking. You just have to do it, accept that you won’t be very good at first and hope to improve. But after that festival, I had a basic outline for a speech, which I improved over time. The fear I felt before turned into nervous energy that almost felt like excitement.
Now, between speaking with an interviewer and by myself for 50 minutes, I prefer the second. That way, I’m in control.
4. How did the author feel about public speaking at first?
A. He was bored with similar themes.
B. He was uncomfortable and disliked it.
C. He felt well-prepared for each speech.
D. He didn’t care about giving a speech.
5. What do the underlined words “in horror” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Curiously. B. Excitedly. C. Angrily. D. Anxiously.
6. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. The author’s efforts to promote his book.
B. The author’s enjoyment in writing stories.
C. The author’s confidence in completing the task.
D. The author’s quick preparation for the speech.
7. What does the author aim to convey through his experience?
A. Facing fears directly helps overcome them.
B. Speaking alone is easier than being interviewed.
C. Writers must be ready to speak publicly.
D. Public speaking skills matter in daily life.

You may be surprised to learn that English gets 30 to 45 per cent of its words from French. The reason dates back to the year 1066, when Norman troops invaded (入侵)what is now Britain. The Normans were from northern France and spoke French. During the Norman occupation (占领期), French became the language of England’s rulers and wealthy class. This lasted for more than 300 years. Other people in England continued to speak English during this period.
Over time, the two languages combined and shared words. Some researchers believe that about 10,000 French words eventually entered the English language. However, although English took many French words, their meanings have not always stayed the same. Sometimes the differences in meanings can be very important, and lead to funny or strange situations if the words are used in the wrong way.
Take, for example, the French word “college”. In English, college can often be used in place of the word “university”, or sometimes as a school within a university. However, in French, college actually means “middle school”, or the level of schooling for students in grades five or six through eight.
There are many other similar words in the two languages with completely different meanings. In English, the word “chat” is a verb which means “to talk casually”, but in French, the word “chat” is the word for an animal: a cat.
If an English speaker says someone is jolly, that means they are cheerful or friendly. But in French, “jolie” means someone is good-looking or pleasant to look at. In any case, both are nice things to say to someone.
8. What language did the upper class speak in Britain of Norman times?
A. English. B. French.
C. Both English and French. D. Some unknown language.
9. What does a Frenchman mean if he says he likes a chat?
A. He prefers to chat in French. B. He wants to have a talk.
C. He hates to speak English. D. He likes a kind of pet.
10. What is the French word “jolie” used to do?
A. Describe people’s looks. B. Replace “jolly” in English.
C. Refer to people’s happiness. D. Prove the change in French.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. French words in English. B. Difficulty in grasping English.
C. Comparison between two languages. D. Development of English.
D
Most of us are aware of “Is the glass half full or half empty?” litmus test. If you pick the former, you’re an “optimist (乐观主义者)”; otherwise, you’re a “pessimist.” It’s not a black-or-white test, but it can measure how one sees life.
According to psychologist Lissy Ann Puno, most of us grow up wanting to be an optimist — a person who can see the good in any situation and can stay hopeful when facing challenges. Some people, though, life happens and they start to see the glass half-empty instead. Pessimists tend to see the wrong in every situation, and blame external factors when things go wrong.
Being continuously fed with bad news and disappointments can turn optimistic people into adults who are critical of almost everything. For some the shift becomes easier, being raised by pessimistic parents. Others still remain optimistic, thanks to a positive household growing up.
“This is why developing optimism in young children is important for their development as adults,” said Lissy Ann. If adopted at an early age, this powerful personality quality can help children grow into strong adults capable of handling problems with confidence, courage, and hope. What parent wouldn’t want that for their children?
“Children are seen as natural optimists,” Lissy Ann said. They come into this world with a pure heart that hasn’t been influenced by societal expectations, life experiences, mental shock, or authority figures yet. Whether a child grows up to be optimistic or not is partly genetic (遗传的)and partly environmental. “Childhood experiences, parent-child connection, or authority figures will all have some influence,” she said. Although optimism (or the lack of it) could be passed down genetically, it can also be taught.
12. What does the underlined part “see the glass half-empty” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Hold onto hope in difficult times. B. Learn the truth about life.
C. Face challenges bravely. D. Become pessimistic.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Effective ways to deal with children’s pessimism.
B. The harm of receiving negative information.
C. The process of children’s mental transformation.
D. Factors affecting children’s life attitude.
14. Why is it important for children to be optimistic according to paragraph 4?
A. It leads them to future success.
B. It enables them to think creatively.
C. It helps them meet their parents’ expectations.
D. It makes them mentally strong in adulthood.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Children are more optimistic than adults.
B. Proper guidance helps make children more optimistic.
C. Optimism strengthens the family connection.
D. Genetic factors decide how optimistic children are.

【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. A

For some, the shift becomes easier, being raised by pessimistic parents.
【答案】12 D 13. D 14. D 15. B

【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Being continuously fed with bad news and disappointments can turn optimistic people into adults who are critical of almost everything. Others still remain optimistic, thanks to a positive household growing up.(不断听到坏消息和失望会把乐观的人变成对几乎所有事情都持批评态度的成年人。对于一些人来说,转变变得更容易,因为他们是由悲观的父母抚养长大的。其他人仍然保持乐观,这要归功于一个积极的家庭成长环境)”可知,该段主要讲述影响人心态(乐观或悲观)的因素。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“If adopted at an early age, this powerful personality quality can help children grow into strong adults capable of handling problems with confidence, courage, and hope.(如果在早期采用,这种强大的个性品质可以帮助孩子成长为强大的成年人,能够自信、勇气和希望地处理问题)”可知,儿童拥有乐观精神的重要性在于,它能让他们在成年后心理强大。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Whether a child grows up to be optimistic or not is partly genetic (遗传的)and partly environmental. “Childhood experiences, parent-child connection, or authority figures will all have some influence,” she said. Although optimism (or the lack of it) could be passed down genetically, it can also be taught.(一个孩子长大后是否乐观,一部分是遗传的,一部分是环境的。她说:“童年经历、亲子关系或权威人物都会有一定的影响。”虽然乐观(或缺乏乐观)可以遗传,但它也可以被教导)”可知,环境和后天教导会影响孩子的乐观程度,即恰当的引导有助于让孩子更乐观。故选B。
