In 2004, when my daughter Becky was ten, she and my husband, Joe, were united because they wanted a dog, Misty. And they promised to walk her every day.
But from the second day, neither thought to walk the dog again. I was slow to accept that I would be the one to feed and clean her. As she looked up at the three new humans in her life, she calculated, “The middle-aged woman is the stupidest one.”
Quickly, she and I developed something special. She’d look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, and then wait, trusting I would understand her, which I almost always did.
Even so, part of me continued to hate the walking duty Joe and Becky had promised to carry out. It nearly drove me mad. “Not fair!” I’d loudly remind everyone I knew.
On January 1, 2007, Joe’s doctor said an unthinkable word—leukemia (白血病). With that, I spent eight to ten hours a day with him in the hospital, doing anything and everything I could to ease his discomfort. Every part of my life changed; no part of my old life remained.
Save one—Misty still needed walking. At the beginning, when my friends wanted to help walk her, I refused because I knew they were busy.
As months went by, I began to realize that I actually wanted to walk Misty. The walk in the morning before I headed to the hospital was a quiet, peaceful time to clear my head.
After Joe died in 2009. The truth is, after these years, I’ve come to enjoy my walks with Misty. She reminded me that no matter how hard the present or unpredictable the future, there’s almost always some joy in my life.
49. What can we learn from Paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. The writer always shouted at Misty while walking her.
B. The writer loved Misty but she didn’t want to walk her.
C. The writer always hoped that Misty could understand her.
D. The writer didn’t want to walk Misty because it cost time.
50. When did the writer’s life start to become different?
A. When Joe fell ill in 2007. B. When Joe died in 2009. C. When Misty tried to please the writer. D. When the writer began to walk Misty.
51. Why did the writer continue to walk Misty while Joe was in hospital?
A. Because she wanted to do some exercise. B. Because the walk brought her great peace. C. Because her friends didn’t want to help her. D. Because she didn’t want Misty to live with others.
52. What does the writer want to tell the readers in the passage?
A. One should learn to enjoy hard times. B. A disaster can change everything in life. C. People will change when they are in difficulty. D. Moments of joy suggest that there is still hope ahead.

Did you have any interesting dreams last night? Our dreams come from a part of the brain that contains our thoughts and memories. A person can have up to six dreams a night, and each dream usually lasts from 10 to 40 minutes. Everyone dreams, but not everyone remembers their dreams. Most people dream in color, usually with sound. And we usually dream about ourselves and the people we know.
Why do we dream? Alan Siegel is a scientist who studies dreams, “Dreams help us get in touch with our deeper feelings,” he says. “They can tell us a lot about ourselves, and can help us understand problems.” Another scientist, Robert Stickgold, thinks dreams come from our memories. He believes we dream to remember, because memories are useful to the brain. Stickgold says the purpose of dreaming through these memories is to help us learn from the past.
Here are a few kinds of dreams and what people think they mean.
Dream 1: You Meet Someone While in Your Pajamas (睡衣) Sometimes people dream that they meet someone they know while wearing their pajamas! This dream may be the result of an embarrassing (尴尬的) event in your life. Some people think we dream about embarrassing situations if our brains are trying to deal with an event in our own lives.
Dream 2: You’re Flying If you dream about flying, you are probably quite happy. This is a good period in your life. You may feel that other people see you as a leader.
Dream 3: You Didn’t Study for a Test This probably means you are worried about an important event coming in your life. If you’re not prepared for the event, your dream may be telling you, “It’s time to get to work!”
Dream 4: Someone’s Running after You If you dream someone is running after you, it may tell you should face the problems in your life instead of giving them up.
53. Which of the following is true according to paragraph 1?
A. Everyone remembers their dreams. B. Most people dream in black and white.
C. People usually dream about past events. D. Dreams usually last between 10 and 40 minutes.
54. Where do our dreams come from according to the passage?
A. From our memories. B. From the real world. C. From what we imagine. D. From the people we know.
55. If you dream about wearing pajamas, what might your feelings be?
A. Afraid of facing a problem. B. Happy and feeling in control. C. Worried about an important event. D. Embarrassed about something in your life.
56. What would be the best title for this passage?
A. The Science of Memory and Dreams B. Common Dreams and Their Meanings C. How to Control Your Dreams D. The Benefits of Remembering Dreams
D
Like many writers, I’m a top master at procrastination (拖延症). When I should be working on a task, with the clock ticking towards my deadline, I’ll sit there watching meaningless interviews or cat videos on the Internet.
According to the traditional thinking—I, along with my friend procrastinators, have a time management problem. By this view, I haven’t fully understood how long my task is going to take and I’m not paying enough attention to how much time I’m actually wasting on videos. With better scheduling (时间安排), I will stop procrastinating and get on with my work.
Increasingly, however, psychologists (心理学家) are realizing this is wrong. Researchers in the UK have showed that procrastination is a matter of managing our emotions, not our time. The task we’re putting off is making us feel bad—perhaps it’s boring, too difficult or we’re worried about failing—and to make ourselves feel better in the moment, we start doing something else, like watching videos.
One study to encourage the emotional view of procrastination was published by researchers at Case Western Reserve University. They first made people feel bad (by asking them to read sad stories) and showed that this increased their tendency to procrastinate by playing video games instead of preparing for the test they knew was coming. Following studies by another team also showed feeling down only makes people procrastinate more if they have fun things to divert (分散) their attention.
This fresh view on procrastination is beginning to open up exciting new methods for reducing the habit. A method, which is based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (接纳与承诺疗法), seems especially proper. It argues that ordering choices and actions that help you get closer to getting things done can keep you away from the unpleasant feelings. So the next time you’re going to procrastinate, make your focus as simple as “What’s the next action?” Focusing on this one-step question takes your mind off your feelings and onto easily achievable action. Our research and lived experience show very clearly that once we get started, usually we’re able to keep going. Getting started is “everything”.
57. Traditionally, we think procrastinators are those who ________.
A. are usually responsible people B. have difficulty managing time C. enjoy watching videos while writing D. can get work done with better organization
58. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A. Low emotions lead to procrastination. B. Procrastination improves your moods. C. Test-takers cannot escape bad emotions. D. Procrastination only happens during video games.
59. What is the suggested way to solve procrastination according to the passage?
A. Avoiding tasks that may cause unhappy feelings. B. Putting your tasks in the right order to finish. C. Focusing on one simple action to get started. D. Planning your tasks to avoid distractions.
60. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To explain how good time management matters in life.
B. To discuss what effect procrastination brings about.
C. To compare different reasons for procrastination.
D. To introduce new studies about procrastination.

How do you spend your weekends? For many young people, they go to the cinema with friends, have dinner out, or go shopping. This was once the routine for Zhang Yiling, a 27-year-old girl from Shanghai. But three years ago, fresh out of university and starting her first job, Zhang realized that her idea of “relaxing weekends” nearly turned into “spending money”. If she didn’t spend money on weekends, she wouldn’t know what relaxing activities to do. Because of this, Zhang began to look for other ways to enjoy weekend life, not just shopping.
To make a change, Zhang and 26 friends built up The Lifespark Group in 2022. They started a project called “Make Your Weekend a True Break”. By doing surveys, they found many surprising ways to enjoy weekends, such as dancing and exercising in a park square, joining book clubs, watching movies at home, or even becoming a model for free photos.
Zhang herself also began to pay closer attention to the interesting things around her. She found that a flower shop near her home gave free lessons on weekends. She learned about how to pick fresh flowers and grow plants. “I take care of my plants and flowers every day. I enjoy looking at them growing strong. That makes me feel relaxed.”
“I hope that our project can make more people know what they really want and how to use money in the right way,” said Zhang Yiling. “Let’s go to the library to read about different lives we never experience and visit museums to learn about history or culture. We can also spend an afternoon looking through old pictures with our family.”

B. The writer loved Misty, but she didn’t want to walk her.

【答案】57. B 58. A 59. C 60. D
