What is language for? Some people seem to think it’s for practising grammar 1 and learning lists of words. That’s wrong. Language is for exchange of ideas, and for communication.
The way to learn a language is to practise 2 it as often as possible. A great man once said it is necessary to practise as much as possible. And 3 you use it in real situations, the more natural it will become.
Learning any language 4 a lot of effort. But don’t give up. Relax! Be patient and enjoy 5 . Rome wasn’t built in a day. Work harder 6 practise more. Fluency (流利) comes from hundreds of times of practice. Your hard work will be rewarded one day. You won’t regret it!
Use a dictionary and a grammar guide constantly (不断地). Keep a small English dictionary 7 you at all times. If you see a new word, look it up. It can help you. Think about the word and use it, in your mind and in a sentence so that you can memorize the word more 8 .
It’s 9 useful way to think in English whenever possible. When you see something, think of the English word, and then think about the word in a sentence.
10 more about the culture behind the language. When you understand the cultural background, you can better use the language.

What subject do you worry about the most at school? Many students worry about math. Some students can’t sleep well the day before a math exam. Others may feel very nervous during the exam. But there might be a way to make the subject less stressful.
“For people who are anxious about math, a posture (姿势) makes a big difference,”Erik Peper from San Francisco State University told Daily Mail. That’s right—sitting up straight can help you do better in math exams.
Scientists tested 125 college students. They asked them to do a simple math test while sitting in a slumped-over(趴着的) position, or sitting up straight. After the test, 56 percent of students said the exam was easier to do when they were sitting up straight.
“Slumping over is a passive (被动的) posture. It can bring out negative memories in the body and brain. This can stop you from thinking clearly,”Peper said.
“Students who were not nervous about taking the math exam did not necessarily benefit from a better posture. But they found that doing math while slumping over was more difficult,” Science Daily reported.
▲ Athletes, musicians and public speakers can all benefit from a better posture. When you feel stressed out, you can also try to sit up or stand up straight. It can help you feel more positive and focus better.

In July, 2021, China introduced the “double reduction” policy (“双减”政策). It hopes to reduce schoolwork burden (负担) on primary and junior high school students. The policy calls for reducing homework and after-school classes. Four years has passed since the new term began. How do students feel about this new policy?
“Our homework is clearly less than before,” said Zhang Chen,a Grade Six student. “We are not encouraged to buy workbooks any more. The exercises are mainly from the textbook. Meanwhile, students have enough time to take in new knowledge from life and do the activities they like now.”
For 13-year-old Zhou Hang, a junior high school student, the best thing about “double reduction” policy is the increased time in after-school activities. “We can now spend more time taking part in clubs and activities,” said Zhou.
Both Zhang and Zhou find there are fewer exams now. But they think it’s not necessarily a good thing. “Exams push me to study harder. Each exam shows my progress as well as my weak points,” said Zhang.
Zhou also pointed out that when burden is lightened,self-discipline (自律) becomes the key. “Some students now spend more time having fun when homework is finished early. But if you use all the free time to relax, you might fall behind other students,” he said.
