Insider Flight Tips for Your Journey
Anyone can book a trip, but not everyone can plan an ultimate adventure that is affordable, accommodating and fun. At www. tripinsiders. org, we aim to provide you with the best insider secrets in the travel business. And on this website, we also offer a state-of-the-art travel comparison tool to make planning easier than ever. Here are some insider tips that we'd like to share with you about flights.
Look for Glitch (小故障) Fares
Online booking systems for airfare don’t come without a pricing mistake every once in a while. Follow deal-minded travel sites and blogs to learn about pricing mistakes that work in your favor. This is the most useful if you live near a major airport and have a flexible schedule.
Consider Alternate Airports
Some major cities have more than one airport, so make sure to check them all for the cheapest fares. For example, if you’re planning to visit the Bay Area of California, check for rates in both San Francisco International Airport and Oakland International Airport.
Cross the Border by Land
Domestic flights are often cheaper than international ones, so if you live near a border and want to fly to a neighboring country, you can save by crossing the border by land and then catching a domestic flight. For example, Toronto residents may save by crossing the American border into Buffalo and then flying to another American city.
Use a Digital Luggage Scale
There’s nothing more frustrating than learning that your bag is too heavy to fly or that it’ll cost you extra when you arrive at the airport. Digital luggage scales are great for making sure that you’re not going over the baggage limit with your new souvenirs.
1. What is the main purpose of www.tripinsiders.org ?
A. To recommend travel websites. B. To fund the travel business.
C. To advertise a travel agency. D. To uncover travel business secrets.
2. What is advised for air travel?
A. Selecting airports. B. Flying the border.
C. Carrying more baggage. D. Having a fixed schedule.
3. What do the four tips have in common?

Are your keys not in the spot you thought you left them? Can’t recall the title of a book? I’ve had those moments. Such instances of “brain freeze” remind us that we should do everything in our power to keep our brains sharp.
A new study finds Tai Chi study can help slow cognitive (认知的) decline and protect against dementia (痴呆). The study included about 300 older adults, in their mid-70s on average, who had all reported that their memory was not as good as it used to be.
As part of the study, all the participants took a 10-mirrute test called the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. A normal score is 26-30. A person who scores between 18 and 25 is considered to have mild impairment (损害), which means they don’t have dementia but they’re not as sharp as they used to be and may need to work harder to maintain everyday activities. Once their score drops under 18, people experience quite a bit of impairment from memory loss and cognitive decline.
The average score of participant s at the start of the study was 25. The study found that people who practiced a simplified form of Tai Chi twice a week for about six months improved their score by 1.5 points, meaning that they’re going to get three extra years before they hit that decline into dementia.
Researchers also tested a more stricter type of Tai Chi, called Cognitively Enhanced Tai Chi, where they provided extra challenges. For example, participants were asked to spell a word, backward and forward, as they moved through a series of Tai Chi moves. The people who practice this type of cognitively enhanced Tai Chi improved their scores by about 3 points, meaning they are given six extra years of cognitive function.
The theory on why Tai Chi is effective is that it combines the memorization of the movements, known as forms, almost like composing dancing moves.
4. Why are two questions raised in the first paragraph?
A. To present the author’s doubts. B. To expect answers from readers.
C. To analyze the causes of forgetfulness. D. To introduce the main topic of the text.
5. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. Cognitive assessment methods. B. The process of running the test.
C. Cognitive measurement criteria. D. The test results of the participants.
6. What does the pre-best average score of the participants imply?
A. Most of them suffer from dementia. B. They remain as quick-minded as before.
C. Many of them have slight cognitive decline. D. They can protect themselves against dementia.
7 Why does Tai Chi have a positive impact?
A. It helps resolve challenges. B. It involves mind-body movements.
C. It puts off cognitive decline by three years. D. It improves the participants academic level.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. C 7. B

Humans spend approximately one-third of their lives sleeping, which means that by the time you reach 15 years old, you will have slept for about 5 years! However, the question remains: why do we do it? Sleep has long been a puzzle for people, leading scientists to explore its mysteries. They have found that during sleep, our brains and bodies do not simply shut down; instead, complex processes unfold.
What causes sleepiness? It’s caused by our biological clock releasing a special chemical signal at the same time daily, signaling it’’s time to wind down. The feeling of heaviness comes from the buildup of old nerve messenger chemicals. When the message gets too much, the brain senses that it’s time to sleep. During sleep, the body breaks down and clears away these old messengers, preparing for a fresh start.
As you slip into sleep, your heart and breathing slow down, and your brain ignores the most sounds and surroundings around you. Despite appearances, your brain remains active during sleep, performing essential tasks. Throughout the night, you cycle through light, deep, and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep stages every 90 minutes. Early on, slow-wave sleep is the primary stage, aiding in brain cleaning, while towards morning,REM sleep increases, leading to vivid dreams. During sleep, your body repairs and grows, creating new skin, muscle, and other tissues with released chemicals. It’s also a time for hormone (荷尔蒙) production, aiding growth, and boosting the immune (免疫) system to fight infections.
Scientists still have many questions about sleep, such as why some people need more sleep than others and how certain animals can function with less sleep. They aim to find ways to improve sleep quality. However, one thing is clear: getting enough sleep is vital for health and intelligence. Think of sleep as a free magic potion that strengthens you, aids growth, boosts immunity, and enhances intelligence, happiness, and creativity. Simply lie down and rest to enjoy these benefits.
8. What inference can be drawn from scientists’ findings about sleep?
A. Sleep serves no purpose. B. Sleep has fundamental processes.
C. Sleep involves complex processes. D. Sleep has minimal impact on brain function.
9. What is the primary function of the body’s “biological clock“?
A. Determining the best time for sleep.
B. Controlling chemicals within the body.
C. Managing eating and digestion patterns.
D. Regulating daytime and nighttime activities.
10. What is the main focus of the third paragraph?
A. Describing the different stages and functions of sleep.
B. Discussing the benefits of daytime activities for overall health.
C. Exploring the effects of inadequate sleep on the body and mind.
D. Analyzing the impact of stress on the immune system during sleep.
11. Which of the following best describes the structure of the passage?
A. Narrative of personal sleep experiences.
B. Comparison of human and animal sleep patterns.
C. Imaginary stories illustrating the advantages of sleep.
D. Explanation of sleep importance, with body processes described.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. A 11. D

Score another one for artificial intelligence (AI). In a recent study, 151 human participants competed against ChatGPT-4 in three tests designed to measure divergent (发散的) thinking, which is considered to be an indicator of creative thought.
In the study published in Scientific Reports and authored by Ph. D. students Kent F. Hubert and Kim N. Awa from the University of Arkansas, GPT-4 provided more original and detailed answers than the human participants.
The three tests employed were the Alternative Use Task, which asks participants to come up with creative uses for everyday objects like a rope or a fork; the Consequences Task, which invites participants to imagine possible outcomes of hypothetical (假设的) situations, like “What if humans no longer needed sleep?”; and the Divergent Associations Task, which asks participants to generate 10 nouns that are as semantically (语义地) distant as possible.
Answers were evaluated in terms of the number of responses, length of response and semantic difference between words. Ultimately, the researchers found that overall, GPT-4 was more original and detailed than humans on each of the divergent thinking tasks. In other words, GPT-4 demonstrated higher creative potential in tasks requiring divergent thinking.
This finding does come with some warnings. The researchers state, “It is important to note that the measures used in this study are all measures of creative potential, but the involvement in creative activities or achievements is another aspect of measuring a person’s creativity.” The purpose of the study was to examine human-level creative potential, not necessarily people who may have established creative certifications.
Whether the tests are perfect measures of human creative potential is not really the point. The point is that large language models are rapidly progressing and outperforming humans in ways they have not before. Whether they are a threat to replace human creativity remains to be seen. For now, the researchers continue to see “Moving forward, future possibilities of AI acting as a tool of inspiration and an aid in a person’s creative process are promising”.
12. What can be learned about creative thought?
A. It is related to divergent thinking. B. It is badly needed in ChatGPT-4.
C. It is generated through standardized tests. D. It is something only humans have.
13. Which of the following is an Alternative Use Task?
A. What are all the things you can think of that are blue?
B. List all the words you can associate with the term “water”.
C. Name as many uses for a shoe other than wearing it on your foot.
D. What would happen if all the trees in the world suddenly disappeared?
14. Why did the researchers conduct the study?
A. To promote the development of languages.
B. To assess the creative potential of humans.
C. To present creative certifications to its participants.
D. To understand the machine-level creative potential.
15. What is the researchers’ attitude towards AI helping people in creative process?
A. Uncaring. B. Unclear. C. Optimistic. D. Doubtful.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. C

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) landed on their window.
The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.” After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this? The son said, “Father, I told you just now. It’s a crow.”
After a little while, the father asked his son the same question for the third time, “What is this?” At this time, some expression of anger was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father. “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son for the fourth time, “What is this?”
This time his son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’? Are you not able to understand this?”
A minute later the father went to his room and came back with a diary, which he had kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page: Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow suddenly landed on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I didn’t at all feel angry, but instead felt affection for my innocent son.
Paragraph 1:
After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father. His father would patiently answer the same question all 23 times without feeling irritation while his father asked him the same question just 4 times! The son thought to himself: If I attain old age, how will my son look at me? Will he think of me as a burden? Will he shout at me because of my poor sight, poor hearing or poor understanding?
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him for his bad behavior. He said aloud, “I promise to make you happy forever, Dad. It is you who have cared for me ever since I was a little child, showering your selfless affection on me. You worked hard to make money so that I could afford to go to university. I will serve you in the best way.”

①开始:began/started/initiate
②大喊:shout/yell/bawl/exclaim

C. They merely apply to businessmen. D. They are only for Toronto residents.

A. Most of them suffer from, dementia. B. They remain as quick-minded as before.
C. Many of them have slight cognitive decline. D. They can protect themselves against dementia.
7. Why does Tai Chi have a positive impact?
A. It helps resolve challenges. B. It involves mind-body movements.
C. It puts off cognitive decline by three years. D. It improves the participants academic level.
C
As you slip into sleep your heart and breathing slow down, and your brain ignores the most sounds and surroundings around you.
C Imaginary stories illustrating the advantages of sleep.
D. Explanation of sleep importance, with body processes described.
