Though San Diego is home to a habitat of sea lions, dolphins and birds, its most popular animals are whales. It’s hardly surprising, then, that the city boasts unequaled opportunities for observing these gentle giants. After consulting travelers and experts, we identified the following whale watching tours as the best available.
San Diego Whale Watching
This tour features a certified marine biologist as a guide, ensuring that sea life enthusiasts will get the maximum amount of insight about the whales, dolphins and other creatures they’ll see. Reviewers appreciate the friendly crew members’ informed commentary, as well as their respect for the animals. It also offers a sunset cruise and private charters.
Adventure Whale Watching
If you’re looking for an adventurous ride that puts you within arm’s reach of wildlife, this tour may be for you. The company uses military-style rigid inflatable (需充气的) boats that are low to the water. Thanks to the boat’s high speed, it can quickly navigate to where whale activity is detected and cover more ground than a traditional whale watching boat.
Flagship Cruises & Events
This tour aims to be educational and fun, and reviewers consistently report that it succeeds in both respects, with the crew winning praise for being knowledgeable and personable. Reviewers also appreciate that the cruise departs from Broadway Pier, which is within walking distance of other top San Diego attractions, making it easy to add a whale watching cruise to a day of sightseeing.
Next Level Sailing
For many recent cruisers, the beautiful, 141-foot sailing yacht (游艇) used for this whale watching tour is as much a draw as the attentive crew. The sailboat boasts more than just good looks — its size makes it more stable than other boats used for whale watching tours. In fact, the company offers a “no seasickness guarantee” — if you get sick, you’ll receive a $25 gift certificate.
21. Which tour involves a scientist accompanying the tourists?
A. San Diego Whale Watching. B. Adventure Whale Watching.
C. Flagship Cruises & Events. D. Next Level Sailing.
22. What distinguishes Adventure Whale Watching from the other tours?
A. The crew’s knowledge. B. The boat’s speed.
C. The reviewers’ report. D. The better accessibility.
23. What is an advantage of Next Level Sailing?
A. It gives visitors extra gifts. B. It offers military-style boats.
C. It ensures a sense of comfort. D. It departs from Broadway Pier.

When famous stem cell (干细胞) biologist Helen Blau reads her recently published picture book, Stem cells to the Rescue, to her grandchildren, even the 5-year-olds sits still.
“I’ve read it to them many times,” says Blau. The grandmother of four describes how her grandkids, between the ages of 5 and 9, especially love to point to the curly-haired frog looking through a microscope on page 30. “They knew right away it was me,” she says, laughing.
Filled with dancing stem cell blobs (小团) and active frogs — who like to color, eat ice cream, and swim, just like her grandchildren — Blau’s rhyming book is a joint effort with illustrator Margery Fain, 69. It was inspired by their own grandchildren and by a desire to educate all children (and hopefully their parents and grandparents too) about stem cells — those building blocks that play an important role in tissue maintenance and repair.
“It’s not very easy for the general public to understand what stem cells are all about,” says Blau, “We thought the book was a possible means to address this as the book can teach while bringing joy to kids.”
The book was published last year by Cold Spring Harbour Laboratory Press. The first half of Blau’s book shows how stem cells come to the rescue when kid frogs hurt their knees. Then, in the second half, as the frogs age and turn into grandparents with glasses, facing age-related problems, scientist frogs like Blau become the rescuers who develop stem cell technologies to treat these conditions.
Researchers are making progress on how to “make new stem cells,” the book says, to repair grandma’s eyes or to regenerate cartilage (软骨) in grandpa’s aching knees — both among Blau’s research projects. For Blau, who has written hundreds of scientific publications, this was her first attempt into children’s literature. It was fun and she might write another. She says, “Wouldn’t it be great if we could motivate kids to become scientists?”
24. What do Blau’s grandchildren think of the book?
A. Confusing. B. Appealing. C. Valuable. D. Professional.
25. What is a feature of Stem cells to the Rescue according to the text?
A. It uses personified characters. B. It focuses on frog activities.
C. It presents rhyming songs. D. It stresses a healthy lifestyle.
26. What does the underlined word “this” mean in paragraph 4?
A. The public’s limited understanding of stem cells.
B. The lack of children’s books about stem cells.
C. The difficulty of making science interesting.
D. The need of carrying out joyful education.
27. What does Blau expect of the book in the future?
A. It can have a place in children’s literature.
B. It can show her progress in stem cells study.
C. It can help apply the stem cell research.
D. It can inspire children’s scientist dream.
C
Adrian Ward, a psychologist at the University of Texas, remembers a dial-up connection in his home as a kid. “In those days, the Internet lived in a room in your home. You used it at specific times because you had limited minutes and had to make sure nobody else was using the phone line,” Ward recalls.
So, what would it be like to go back to those days? No mobile-app shopping, no streaming shows or media on your phone?
The researchers measured three different outcomes of well-being, mood and attention at the beginning, middle and end of a four-week study. While 91% of the 467 participants, aged 18 to 74, improved their scores in at least one category, 71% reported better mental health after the break, compared to before, and 73% reported better subjective well-being.
The participants completed a survey often used by doctors to assess symptoms (症状) of depression and anxiety. It includes questions such as: How often in the past week have you felt little interest or pleasure in doing things you typically enjoy? The participants’ responses pointed to a significant lift in mood. One of the surprising findings was that the decrease in depressive symptoms was comparable to — or even greater than — reductions documented in studies of people taking antidepressant medications. The effects were larger than anticipated.
A break from the Internet on their phones also improved participants’ attention spans (持续时间), which was measured by a computer task. They tracked pictures which changed repeatedly between mountain landscapes and urban landscapes. Prior research has shown that performance tends to drop off as people age, but to the researchers’ surprise, after the Internet break, there was a significant boost in scores.
It’s not clear how long-lasting the effect of less time online would be, but this study proves what has been found in observational studies. “It’s one of the first experiments that does provide causal evidence that reducing time spent on your phone has all these significant benefits,” Ward says.
28. What did the researchers aim to find out through the study?
A. The health risks caused by mobile phones.
B. The impact of an Internet break on people.
C. The factors affecting people’s mental health.
D. The effective ways of dealing with depression.
29. The questions in the survey focused on the participants’ ______.
A. mood swings B. personal interest C. health indicators D. medical history
30. How did the study measure the participants’ attention spans?
A. By observing their daily use of phone Internet.
B. By asking doctors to assess their attention directly.
C. By having them monitor alternate images on a computer.
D. By asking them to complete a paper-and pencil survey.
31. What’s Ward’s tone like in the last paragraph?
A. Humorous. B. Doubtful. C. Grateful. D. Confident.
D
Throughout history, trees have played a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. They absorb CO2 and transform it into oxygen. But one of the challenges with this traditional carbon absorption is that the CO2 trees store can be released back into the atmosphere when they die.
However, the discovery of certain trees in Kenya adds a new dimension to this natural process. These trees, also found in several other countries, have been observed to transform CO2 into calcium oxalate. Then bacteria (细菌) present in the trees and surrounding soil transform it further into calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), a primary component of limestone and chalk. The unique process ensures that the CO2 is kept in solid form for much longer, even after the tree’s life ends. This finding was emphasized by Mike Rowley from the University of Zurich at the Goldschmidt Conference.
While the scientific community is optimistic about these findings, several challenges remain. The primary concern is determining the exact amount of CO2 that these trees can transform throughout their lifetime. Without this accurate data, it is challenging to assess the full impact of this method globally. Understanding the ecological balance and ensuring the preservation of biodiversity are crucial before worldwide planting of these trees. Cooperative research efforts are needed to explore these aspects and develop a comprehensive strategy for using these trees as a natural solution to climate change.
This discovery in Kenya invites us to reconsider the potential of natural processes in addressing environmental challenges. While technological solutions to climate change are vital, integrating natural methods offers an alternative approach. The unique ability of these trees presents a promising method for exploration.
The journey to fighting climate change is complex. As we dig deeper into understanding natural phenomena like the Kenyan trees, we must ask ourselves: How can we make the best of the power of nature to create a sustainable future for generations to come?
32. What is special about the trees found in Kenya?
A. They absorb more CO2.
B. They help turn CO2 into solids.
C. They release oxygen quickly.
D. They live in harmony with bacteria.
33. What is the core challenge before applying the discovery globally?
A. Assessing the cost of the process.
B. Understanding the impact on soil.
C. Quantifying the CO2 transformation.
D. Collecting the data on biodiversity.
34. What does the author try to explore in the last two paragraphs?
A. The seriousness of climate change.
B. The method of green development.
C. The prospect of scientific approaches.
D. The role of nature in climate solutions.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A defensive Strategy in Nature
B. A Recent Advance in CO2 Research
C. Kenyan Trees: A Natural Carbon Lock
D. Tree Planting: A Key to Ecological Balance

My sister is a three-time breast cancer survivor who has personally experienced significant loss in her lifetime. 36 She is one of the most resilient(有韧性的)people I know. Her story got me thinking: How does resilience impact overall health and well-being?
Resilience is our ability to bounce back from adversity. It’s defined as “the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility.” 37 And as it turns out, there are significant health benefits to being resilient.
Physically, resilience contributes to health by reducing the negative impacts of stress on the body. Research indicates that individuals with higher levels of resilience tend to have lower rates of some diseases, and exhibit stronger immune system function. 38 For example, do exercise regularly and keep a balanced diet, which further support physical well-being.
Mentally and emotionally, resilience serves as a protective factor against the development of mental health disorders like anxiety and depression. Resilient individuals are better equipped to manage stress and maintain a positive outlook. 39 Such emotional resilience not only enhances mental health but also improves relationships, productivity, and overall quality of life. 40 Resilient individuals are good at seeking help, offering assistance, and building strong social networks that serve as valuable resources during challenging times. These connections provide emotional support and practical assistance, promoting collective well-being.
A. Generally, invest effort in communication.
B. However, she expresses joy and gratitude frequently.
C. But people are not born with high levels of resilience.
D. Socially, resilience strengthens interpersonal connections.
E. This helps them develop greater strength in the face of adversity.

In my memory, my parents have always been the model of understanding and patience. Their gentle support has guided me through many hard moments in life.
Once, I made a big mistake in my mid-term exam. I scored far below my usual level and even lied to them about the result at first, afraid of their disappointment. But when they found the test paper in my schoolbag, I lowered my head, waiting for a scolding (训斥). Instead, my father sat down beside me, patted my hand softly and said, “Mistakes are just lessons in disguise (伪装), dear. What matters is being honest and fixing what went wrong.” My mother brought me a cup of hot milk, adding, “We know you’ve been trying. Let’s go over the paper together tonight, okay?” Their words removed my anxiety like sunlight on ice.
Another time, I fell in love with painting and spent almost all my after-school time on it, which made my homework pile up. My teacher even called my parents to talk about my poor grades. I thought they would take away my paintbrushes, but they only had a calm chat with me. “We love seeing you so fond of something,” my father said, “but balance is key-your studies lay the foundation for your future, and painting can be a wonderful break from it.” With their guidance, I made it a rule: finish homework first, and then paint for an hour. Soon, my grades improved, and my paintings even won a school award.
Last month, I faced a tough choice; join the school’s art competition which would take weeks of practice or take extra classes to prepare for the upcoming physics exam. I hesitated, staying up late worrying about letting my parents down no matter what I chose. That night, I found a note on my desk.

【原文】Good evening, everyone. My name is Grace Collins and I’m excited to share my experiences with you tonight. For the past ten years, I’ve worked to protect and restore natural ecosystems particularly in a small island nation in the Pacific. One of my proudest projects was creating a community program where local fishermen could work together to monitor and protect the environment. These partnerships have shown me that successful conservation isn’t just about using the latest tools or technologies. It’s about building trust, respecting local traditions and finding ways to solve problems together. I’ve learned so much from the people. I’ve worked with and their knowledge has been key to bringing real change. Later in my talk, I’ll introduce some new techniques. We’ve recently developed to help speed up restoration efforts but first I’d like to tell you more about the work we did and what we learned along the way. After my presentation, I’d be happy to take any questions.

A. Humorous. B. Doubtful. C. Grateful. D. Confident.
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. C 31.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I picked up the note and read my father’s handwriting carefully. It said, “Dear, we know you’re stressed. Choose whatever makes you happy — art or physics. We’ll support you. Love painting? Don’t miss the competition. Worry about physics? We’ll help you review. You don’t have to be perfect. Just follow your heart.” Tears filled my eyes. I hugged them tightly, saying, “Thank you for understanding me.” In that warm hug, I felt the quiet strength of their love wrapping around me like a soft blanket.
With their encouragement, I signed up for the art competition and made a study plan. Mornings were for physics formulas; evenings, I painted after homework. My parents bought me new brushes to cheer me on. On competition day, they waited outside with snacks. When I won second prize, my father lifted me up, and my mother took photos. Later, my physics exam went well. Looking at their smiles, I knew their tolerance was the best gift for my growth. That night I wrote the word “PATIENCE” on the first page of my notebook, promising to pass their gentle gift to the next pair of wondering hands.

Together, i've learned so much from the people i've worked with, and their knowledge has been key to bringing real change.
