Generally, people would feel uncomfortable when there are young children sitting next to them on a plane, but a man called Toddy regarded it as a chance to give a hand to a helpless mom. Jessica spoke about what Toddy had done to make her travels with her children much easier.
She looked very worried when she boarded the plane. Her 4-month-old son was crying because of several unexpected events. Her 3-year-old daughter, Caroline, who had been excited before boarding the plane lost her excitement and began crying too. As Jessica tried to calm them down and help them stop crying, the man sitting next to them stopped in to help.
He reached for the baby and held him while Jessica fastened Caroline’s seatbelt, got her iPad and started her movie. Once Caroline was settled and a little bit calm, he also played games with her so that Jessica could feed her son. The kids were calm, but he didn’t stop there. Throughout the flight, he made the 3-year-old Caroline his best friend.
Much to Jessica’s happiness, the man was taking the same connecting flight, too. He helped them get off the plane and led them to the next gate, holding Caroline’s hand. As if that wasn’t enough, he changed his seat on the next flight so he could sit in the same row to help them. He told Jessica his wife had had a similar experience when their two boys were young and that a stranger had done the same thing, which moved him to spread the kindness.
The heartwarming story is a reminder to show kindness toward worried parents with young babies. Children don’t yet know how to deal with their feelings, so they cry and scream when they are confused or uncomfortable in a new place. By offering a helping hand, we could not only help an upset parent but also make a child feel a little more comfortable.
24. Jessica got worried while boarding the plane because ________.
A. she met several unexpected events B. she thought her daughter was too excited
C. her children lost control of their emotions D. her children were fighting with each other
25. What did Toddy do to draw Caroline’s attention away from her mom?
A. Starting her movie. B. Feeding her snacks.
C. Fastening her seatbelt. D. Playing games with her.
26 What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. Parents are always treated kindly at the airport.
B. People should help parents with young children.
C. Children cry in order to attract people’s attention.
D Children refuse to learn to manage their emotions.
27. What kind of person is Toddy?
A. Honest and funny. B. Brave and powerful.
C Selfless and naughty. D. Patient and helpful.

Recently, some people have complained about the purposefully addictive (上瘾的) designs of smartphones and social media, which make it hard for anyone to put them down, especially teens. Now, a new report in Emotion gives facts that back up what these people said.
According to the report, young people’s life satisfaction and happiness have dropped since 2012, the year the percentage of teens owning smartphones started increasing rapidly. The report also finds that teens’ psychological (心理的) health gets worse the more hours a week they spend on screens.
Jean Twenge is the lead writer of the report. She graphed (制图) the connection between happiness and screen activities, such as social media, texting, gaming, and video chats. She also graphed the connection between happiness and non-screen activities, including sports, reading, and face-to-face communications. She called the relationship between screen and non-screen activities “zero sum”—if you are doing one, it takes time away from the others.
Diane Tanman complains that her sons are like that. They are 11 and 15. They used to play games in fields, and it made them happier. These days, her sons are more into online games. Many of the games have rewards (奖励) built in to keep players coming back. “It’s just junk food for the brain,” Tanman said.
Ed Lazzara says his 12-year-old son Leo is a fan of video games. After playing a lot, Leo gets more upset and uncomfortable. He wants his son to play fewer video games.
However, totally staying away from electronic devices (设备) doesn’t lead to happiness, either. Twenge and her co-writers found that the happiest teens used electronic devices a little less than an hour daily. After a daily hour of screen time, unhappiness rises in relation to increasing screen time.
Spending time in front of a screen is a normal part of being a teenager. Many schools require students to be online and to use iPads or other devices to do their work. But teachers and parents have also complained that technology can get in the way of learning when teens use their devices for things other than their studies.
If we recognize how screen time influences young minds, we can help teens use technology better and protect their psychological health in the process. Screen time is like ice cream. Sure, we can have some once in a while, but it shouldn’t be part of our everyday lives.
28. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Screen time at home is not as beneficial as screen time at school.
B. Nearly an hour of screen time every day makes teens happiest.
C. Technology should be encouraged in classroom learning.
D. What teens do on the screen influences their happiness.
29. Why does the passage give the examples of families with teens?
A. To prove the bad effect of the addictive designs of electronic devices.
B. To show parents have little control over their teens’ screen time.
C. To compare different-aged teens’ feelings about screen use.
D. To explain why electronic devices make teens feel happy.
30. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Use of Electronic Devices: Should We Consider Teens’ Needs?
B. Teens’ Psychological Health: Why Is It Important?
C. Screen Time and Teens’ Study Performance
D. Screen Time and Teens’ Life Satisfaction
D
Nowadays, many people prefer audiobooks (有声书), a more convenient choice, to old-fashioned reading. You can listen to the latest bestseller while commuting or cleaning up the house. But is listening to a book really the same as reading one? There’s some evidence that reading on a screen reduces learning and comprehension compared to reading from printed text.
If you’re wondering why printed books may be better than screen-based reading, it may have to do with your inability to tell where you are in an audiobook. “As you’re reading a story, the order of events is important, and knowing where you are in a book helps you build the storyline,” says Daniel Willingham, a professor of psychology. While you are listening to an audiobook and trying to find out how much of a book you have left, in a percentage or length of time to the end, it doesn’t seem to have the same narrative-orienting effect (叙事导向效应) as reading from a traditional book.
The self-directed pace (速度) associated with reading may also differentiate books from audiobooks. “About 10% to 15% of eye movements during reading are actually regressive.” Willingham explains. “This happens very quickly when a reader needs to re-read a sentence or a passage to better understand its content. And it’s sort of naturally fit into the process of reading a sentence.” He says this reading behavior almost certainly improves comprehension, and it may be roughly comparable to a listener asking for a speaker to “hold on” or repeat something. Theoretically, you can also pause or jump back while listening to an audio file. “But it’s more trouble,” he adds.
Another consideration is that whether we’re reading or listening to a text, our minds occasionally absent. Seconds (or minutes) can pass before we jump out of the little mental break and refocus our attention, says Willingham. If you’re reading, it’s pretty easy to go back and find the point at which you are lost. It’s not so easy if you’re listening to a recording.
Willingham coauthored a 2010 study that found students who listened to a podcast (播客) lesson performed worse on a comprehension quiz than students who read the same lesson on paper. Interestingly, at the start of the experiment, almost all the students wanted to be in the podcast group. “But then right before I gave them the quiz, I asked them again which group they would want to be in, and most of them had changed their minds—they wanted to be in the reading group,” Willingham says. “They knew they hadn’t learned as much.”
But audiobooks also have some strengths. Human beings have been sharing information orally for tens of thousands of years, Willingham says, while the printed word is a much more recent invention. “When we’re reading, we’re applying parts of the brain to the cognitive task of reading.” Listeners, on the other hand, can get a lot of information from a speaker’s lively pronunciation or intonations. People who hear Shakespeare spoken out loud tend to gain a lot of meaning from the actor’s delivery.
All that said, if you’re reading or listening for relaxation—not for work or study—the differences between audiobooks and print books are probably “small potatoes”. If you are not, that’s where personal preference and the specific context of your reading or listening experience come into play.
31. The underlined word “regressive” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
A. rechecking what you read B. memorizing the sentences
C. predicting the unfinished part D. searching for new information
32. What may professor Daniel Willingham agree with?
A. Kids who listen to audiobooks can have a better understanding of the contents.
B. Printed books allow kids to fit into the process of reading at their own pace.
C. We need to have a mental break and then refocus our attention while reading printed books.
D Audiobooks make you understand the storyline better because you can jump back freely.
33. What can we learn about the audiobooks and printed books from the passage?
A. Reading printed books is easier for you to follow the storyline.
B. Compared with printed books, audiobooks are more suitable for relaxation.
C. People think audiobooks are attractive because of the speakers’ lively voice.
D. Most of the bestsellers are audiobooks because they make reading more convenient.
四、阅读表达(34-36题,每题2分;37题4分。共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
On August 24, 17-year-old Mack Rutherford landed his microlight airplane safely back in Bulgaria, completing a five-month effort to fly around the world. He has now set the record as the youngest person to fly around the world alone.
Mack’s flight began in Bulgaria, where he took off on March 23. He was 16 at the time, but celebrated his birthday during his trip around the world.
He flew in a small, two-seater microlight airplane, able to fly at speeds of about 186 mph (300 kph). One of the plane’s seats was replaced with an extra gas tank (油箱), which allowed Mack to cover longer distances. The plane also had satellite communications that let Mack stay in touch with people on the ground.
Mack’s route took him over Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. He visited 30 countries in all and covered 33,630 miles.
Though Mack expected his trip to take two to three months, he had to change his ideas. In some places, he had to wait long for getting permission to fly. Other problems required major changes to his flight plan.
Mack also faced lots of other challenges, many of them related to extreme weather. In Sudan, Mack had to deal with sandstorms. He had to fly through heavy rain in India, and ended up with water in his gas tanks.
He said crossing the Pacific Ocean was the most difficult part of the trip. After a 10-hour flight from Japan, he had to land — just as it was getting dark — on an island with no one else on it. He spent the night in the open air.
In spite of all the difficult times, Mack described the trip as “amazing”.
Now Mack has set the record for the youngest person to fly around the world alone, beating 18-year-old English pilot, Travis Ludlow, who set the record last year.
Mack says he hopes his trip will show young people they can make a difference. “You don’t need to be 18 to do something special. Just follow your dreams and they will eventually come true,” he said.
34. How long did it take Mack to fly around the world?

At first, failing the subject left me feeling upset. However, those negative feelings didn’t trouble me for too long. Instead, I decided to deal with the difficulty head-on. I started by asking help from my teachers and classmates. They provided guidance and support, which encouraged me to improve my understanding of the subject. Gradually, I made progress.
I learned that difficulties are a part of life and should be seen as opportunities for growth. By facing this challenge, I gained valuable insights into my strengths and weaknesses. In the end, overcoming this obstacle not only improved my academic performance but also taught me important life lessons.
