As a nature photographer,I have to brave the elements. But despite the-wind and the rain,I
still enjoy working outside in the wild. One of the best things about this job is that you can
observe animals in their natural environment.
My favourite place to take photos is Yellowstone National Park.As the world's first
national park,Yellowstone is famous for the variety of its wildlife, but it is probably best known
for its bears. These huge, strong animals can live for 30 vears.Despite a weight of about 300
kilograms, they can run at a speed of around 64 kilometres per hour and are also excellent
swimmers.
Last spring in Yellowstone,I followed a path that took me through a dark forest. When I
finally stepped out of the trees.the view was breathtaking. An eagle flew over the snow-capped
mountains, which were reflected in the still lake below. While I was concentrating on
photographing this amazing scene,I suddenly had a feeling that I was being watched.Slowly,
and with the camera still held to my eye,I turned...and froze.Only meters away from me was a

bear. With water falling off its thick, brown hair, the bear stared back at me.Time stood still as
the bear and 1 both waited to see who would move first. My legs started shaking.Somehow,I
forced my finger to press the button.A sccond later, the bear turned and ran back into the forest.
When I recovered from the shock.I looked at my camera. My most frightening but magical
experience was now captured forever in a single image.
From time to time.I look at the photo as a reminder to show respect to all animals. It is
after all we who are the visitors to their world.

Never judge a book by its cover -even if the cover doesn't say much at all.The first
thing customers see when they walk into the Strand Book Store in Manhattan is a table of
nameless books with covers wrapped like Christmas presents and titles replaced by general
descriptions. The store calls the activity "Blind Date with a Book".
"People love it,"Paul Colarusso, the communications director for the Strand, says,"We put

it right at the front of the store because it quite literally stops people on their way.""People are
attracted to the surprise, which focuses attention and creates a dopamine(多巴胺)response,.”
Mr.Tobin,an associate professor at Case Western University, says.Meanwhile, stores have
found a new way to sell books that are often ignored because they are not new,best-selling or
penned by a famous author.
Much like real dating, there's no perfect science, and a process of trying is involved.
Fantasy and mystery books work well.Forgotten books from the past are great too. When in
Rome by Sarah Adams is described as "Freshly Baked Slow Bum Rom-com",and Spoiler Alert
by Olivia Dade becomes a "You've Got Mail-esque Romance".
But not all bookstores have embraced the activity.Dozens of bookstore owners around the
country say they do not know what "Blind Date Books"is.Others don't participate in the
activity because store policy prohibits returns or exchanges which are necessary if someone has
picked up a book they have already read.
On a warm Friday morning, the bookstore is crowded.About half the customers stop at the
"Blind Date Books"display by the entrance, closely looking over the neatly drawn, wrapped
covers.Heather Toner buys one.Throwing caution to the wind and letting someone else choose
for me just sort of feels like a nice change of pace,'Ms.Toner,a reader, says."I never went on
a real blind date.Blind Date with a Book'is kind ofmy speed."
15.What makes "Blind Date with a Book"appealing according to Mr.Tobin?
A.The ability to choose certain titles.
B.The attractiveness of the packaging.
C.The excitement of a surprising choice.
D.The identification of dopamine response.
16.Why do some bookstore owners refuse to participate in the "Blind Date Books"?
A.They think the packaging is too expensiv
B.They find that arranging the activity is a waste of time.
C.Their store policy does not allow returns or exchanges.
D.They believe the activity is not suitable for their customers.
17.Which words best describe Heather Toner's attitude towards the activi?
A Tolerant and unsure.
B.Open and adventurous.
C.Cautious and reserved.
D.Disapproving and doubtful.

In Costa Rica, even small areas of tree cover can-reduce the presence of invasive()
mosquito species known to spread diseases like dengue fever(登革热),according to a Stanford
University-led study published on May 28th in Landscape Ecology. The findings can help guide
land use decisions and tree protection strategies in rural areas, according to the researchers.
Using field observations and satellite data on land cover for an area of forests, farms, and
residential areas in southern Costa Rica, the researchers found the presence of the Aedes
albopictus mosquito a dengue vector(),decreased in areas with more tree cover while the
total number of mosquto species increased.More species demand more space and resources,
making it harder for an invasive species to find unoccupied space or resources.
Costa Rica has numerous diseases spread by mosquito and two invasive mosquito species
serving as vectors. The forests surveyed in the study hosted a wide varet of mosquito species.
none of which were the dengue vector Aedes albopictus.Residential areas,by contrast, had
much fewer mosquito species and were far more likely to have the invasive,disease-spreading
species.Agricultural areas fell somewhere in between, with results seemingly tied to the
intensity and type of land use.
Natural habitats exist alongside agriculture and development in rural areas. In Costa Rica
and beyond, these areas can provide pathways to protecting biodiversity. The study shows that
protecting trees can help protect biodiversity while also reducing the likelihood of disease
spread. That's good news in the face of warmer temperatures, changes in rainfall, and human
activity that are enabling the spread of illnesses caused by mosquitos to new places.
The researchers emphasize the need to do more research to understand how other vector
species react to increased tree cover."We need to know more about what drives dengue in rural
areas, said study senior author Erin Mordecai, associate professor of biology in Stanford
University."This work shows forests and tree cover can reduce risk, but identifying other land
use types that keep vector populations is the next frontier for controlling this rapidly expanding
disease."
18.How does increased tree cover prevent invasiv mosquitoes?
A.By reducing dengue vectors.
B.By upgrading human habitats
C.By ensuring agricultural outputs.
D.By increasing species competition.

AI kitchen technology tends to be cheaper enough for the home market, thus possibly
changing both home and social life.
21 So it's vital to think about the possible ethical (and social problems
that new technologies might bring, especially for a deeply buman and cultural part of our life-
food.
Cooking can be relaxing and provides opportunities for many things:gratitude, learning,
creativity,communication,adventure,self-expression,growth,independence,confidence and
more.
22 Family relationships could be affected if family members are no longer
working together in the kitchen.
Also, there arc risks to culture. For example,AI could copy traditional recipes and methods
in a poor way,.since AI may tend to ignore or oversimplify cultural details and distinctions.
23Technology developers could become the controllers of food innovation,if the
limits of their machines lead to sameness in food and creativity, similar to the strangely similar
feel of AI art images across different apps.
The technology is still developing,so it's unclear whether robot cooks can identify the right
ingredients to cook.Sickness from food is a concern. Will robot cooks be able to smell, taste or
otherwise sense the freshness of an ingredient or perfomm other safety checks?AI chatbots have

Legal systems are still struggling to sort out who is responsible for autonomous vehicles
25 Given the significance of food, food technologies help shape society. The
kitchen has a special place in homes, neighborhoods and cultures,so changing that
long-standing tradition requires careful thinking to increase benefits and reduce risks.
A All of these may be lost if no one needs to cook.
B.However, convenience can come at a great cost.
C.AI can help test new ideas that still fit with a culture's values
'D This sclection preference could lead to fewer choices in kinds of food.
E.So it's not surprising to think that robot cooks could make mistakes, too.
F.Similarly,it may be hard to figure out legal responsibility for robot cooks.
G.AI chatbots can communicate with AI kitchen, adjusting settings accordingly.
