As a freelance (自由职业) writer, the structure of my workday can often vary wildly. Sometimes, it feels as if I have too much to do — other days, too little. Yet no matter the shape of my 9 to 5, one thing remains constant: emails.
About a year ago, I found my email-checking habit had become more distracting (分心的) than usual. When working on my computer, I found myself nervously checking my phone for unread emails whenever hitting a mental block. Even worse, during lunch or walks, that habit of checking would come with me, making my breaks an extension of the workday.
The little red dot on my Gmail app had become a marker of my professional image: the more unread emails, the more I felt I was failing. By quickly responding to everyone, I convinced myself I was seen as reliable by my paymasters and therefore worthy of the work I needed to pay my electricity bills, so I could charge my phone, read my emails and carry on the endless cycle.
However, speed doesn’t always mean quality. I was always contactable — but at what cost? I took on too much work, not allowing myself space to reflect on the value of my work. The content machine kept running and I was busy, producing “word salad” onto the internet. Something needed to change. After a particularly crazy week of nonstop emailing, I deleted the email app.
The difference was immediately noticeable. I began to rest better. Now, my workdays remain unpredictable, but I’ve realised that a lack of structure needn’t stop me setting boundaries (边界) for myself. Uninterrupted breaks help me focus when I get back to work. Taking a few hours to respond to messages — instead of just minutes — often makes no difference to the sender and allows me to digest the content properly.
I am still surviving as a freelancer in a fast-paced industry, but now I can spend my time endlessly checking my phone for Instagram stories instead.
4. How did the email-checking habit affect the author?
A. It caused him mental disorder. B. It made his breaks less relaxing.
C. It kept him extremely impatient. D. It changed the structure of his workday.
5. Why did the author feel the need to respond to emails quickly?
A. He wanted to avoid long working hours.
B. He sought high pay to cover electricity bills.
C. He desired to maintain a professional image.
D. He believed multitasking ensured employment.
6. What does the author imply by mentioning “word salad” in paragraph 4?
A. He was far from productive. B. He valued quality over quantity.
C. His work was creative and tasteful. D. His work lacked meaningful content.
7. What does the author learn after deleting the email app?
A. Email senders prefer thoughtful replies.
B. Social media is more important than email.
C. Setting boundaries can improve work efficiency.
D. Freelancers should get used to a fast-paced lifestyle.
B 5. C 6. D 7. C
根据第二段中“When working on my computer, I found myself nervously checking my phone for unread emails whenever hitting a mental block. Even worse, during lunch or walks, that habit of checking would come with me, making my breaks an extension of the workday. (当我在电脑上工作时,每当遇到思维障碍,我就会紧张地查看手机是否有未读邮件。更糟糕的是,在午餐时间或散步时,查看手机的习惯也会如影随形,让我的休息时间变成了工作日的延伸。)”可知,查看邮件的习惯让作者的休息时间变得不那么放松。故选B。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The little red dot on my Gmail app had become a marker of my professional image: the more unread emails, the more I felt I was failing. By quickly responding to everyone, I convinced myself I was seen as reliable by my paymasters and therefore worthy of the work I needed to pay my electricity bills, so I could charge my phone, read my emails and carry on the endless cycle. (Gmail应用上的那个小红点已经成了我职业形象的标志:未读邮件越多,我就越觉得自己很失败。通过快速回复每个人,我让自己相信,在雇主眼中我是个可靠的人,因此值得获得那份用来支付电费的工作,这样我就能给手机充电、查看邮件,然后继续这个无尽的循环。)”可知,作者觉得需要快速回复邮件是因为他想维护自己的职业形象。故选C。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“I took on too much work, not allowing myself space to reflect on the value of my work. The content machine kept running and I was busy, producing “word salad” onto the internet. (我承担了太多工作,没有给自己空间去思考我工作的价值。内容机器一直在运转,我很忙,在互联网上制造着“文字沙拉”。)”可推知,作者用“文字沙拉”暗示自己的工作缺乏有意义的内容。故选D。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Now, my workdays remain unpredictable, but I’ve realised that a lack of structure needn’t stop me setting boundaries (边界) for myself. Uninterrupted breaks help me focus when I get back to work. (现在,我的工作日仍然不可预测,但我已经意识到,缺乏结构并不妨碍我为自己设定界限。不间断的休息有助于我回到工作时集中注意力。)”可知,作者在删除邮件应用后学到了设定界限可以提高工作效率。故选C。
C
As a young child, I was painfully shy. I’d watch other children play in the park, wishing I could join them, but I was too scared to approach. Eventually, my mother would come to the rescue. She’d ask the other kids if I could play, too. Today, I feel comfortable giving public lectures in large halls and having conversations in small groups, but I still tend to avoid situations in which I’m expected to spend time with a roomful of strangers.
There could be many reasons. For one thing, I might be carrying some childhood fear of rejection. But beyond that possibility, one likely element is that I tend to underestimate how much people like me after I meet them, as most of us do.
A new research paper reports that the common concern that new people may not like us, or that they may not enjoy our company, is largely unfounded.
Erica Boothby of Cornell University and her colleagues conducted a series of studies to find out what our conversation partners really think of us. In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation.
The researchers observed the gap in a variety of situations: strangers getting acquainted in the research laboratory, first-year college students getting to know their dormitory mates over the course of many months, and community members meeting fellow participants in personal development workshops. In each circumstance, people consistently underestimated how much others liked them. For much of the academic year, as dormitory mates got to know each other and even started to develop enduring friendships, the liking gap persisted.
The data also revealed some of the potential reasons for the illusion: we are often more severe with ourselves than with others, and our inner critic prevents us from appreciating how positively other people evaluate us. Not knowing what our conversation partners really think of us, we use our own thoughts as a proxy (代理人). This is a mistake, because our thoughts tend to be more negative than reality.
8. Why does the author mention his childhood experience?
A. To show how his character changed.
B. To explain what he was like when he was young.
C. To show an example of why people are shy of communication.
D. To emphasize the important role of a mother in one’s childhood.
9. What does the underlined word “unfounded” probably mean?
A. Careless. B. Baseless. C. Selfless. D. Meaningless.
10. What do we know about the liking gap from the text?
A. It indicates what strangers really think of us.
B. It begins and ends quickly among strangers.
C. It disappears when strangers get to know each other.
D. It states our misunderstanding of how much others like us.
11. Which of the following is the best title for this text?
A. People Like You More than You Know
B. How to Get Along Well with Strangers
C. The Way to Know What Others Think of Us
D. Having Conversations with Strangers Benefits Us
C 9. B 10. D 11. A
根据第一段关键句“As a young child, I was painfully shy. I’d watch other children play in the park, wishing I could join them, but I was too scared to approach.”(小时候,我非常害羞。 和第二段内容“There could be many reasons. For one thing, I might be carrying some childhood fear of rejection. But beyond that possibility, one likely element is that I tend to underestimate how much people like me after I meet them, as most of us do.”(可能有很多原因。
根据第四段关键句“In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation.”(在这样做的过程中,他们发现了一种新的认知错觉,他们称之为“喜欢差距”:经过一番交谈后,我们没有意识到陌生人有多么欣赏我们的陪伴。)
通读全文,结合第二段关键句“But beyond that possibility, one likely element is that I tend to underestimate how much people like me after I meet them, as most of us do.”(但除此之外,一个可能的因素是,我和我们大多数人一样,在遇到别人之后,往往会低估他们对我的喜爱程度。)和第四段关键句“In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation.”(在这样做的过程中,他们发现了一种新的认知错觉,他们称之为“喜欢差距”:经过一番交谈后,我们没有意识到陌生人有多么欣赏我们的陪伴。) 故选A项。
D
Scientists have created a new app designed to identify dangerous mosquitoes based on sounds the insects make. The app, called Abuzz, is aimed at helping fight major diseases spread by mosquitoes.
Haripriya Vaidehi Narayanan is one of the researchers who helped develop the app. Narayanan told VOA that anyone with a mobile phone could use the app to identify mosquitoes. “If they see a mosquito around, they just take out their phone, open up the app, point their phone towards the mosquito and hit the record button,”she said. “Then, when the mosquito flaps its wings and starts flying around, it makes that noise, that annoying buzzing noise. That noise is what gets recorded by the Abuzz app.” she added.
Many diseases that mosquitoes carry do not have cures or vaccines. So, targeting the flying insects is the best way to control them. “The most important step is to know where the mosquitoes are,” Narayanan said.
Traditional methods for hunting mosquitoes are costly and can take a very long time. The process also requires labor-intensive trapping as well as trained scientists to identify the insects.
Manu Prakash is a professor of bioengineering at Stanford University and a lead investigator on the project. He says that out of about 3,500 different mosquito species, only about 40 are dangerous to humans. Prakash says the goal of the project was to find out whether the mosquitoes around a person's house are just an annoyance, or whether they are possibly dangerous.
When mosquitoes move their wings up and down, they produce buzzing sounds. But each kind of mosquito makes a slightly different buzzing noise. The app records these sounds. Users of the app can get an answer by recording as little as one or two seconds of the buzzing sound. The app compares this recording to a collection of other recordings. It then predicts which species of mosquito it is most likely to be.
By making use of mosquito information worldwide, the app can help build maps of where dangerous mosquitoes are. This can help scientists and health officials identify areas where disease is likely to break out and where to target mosquito control.
12. Why is it important to locate mosquitoes?
A. Because they are very small and hard to find.
B. Because diseases carried by them are a big problem.
C. Because mosquitoes flap their wings very quickly.
D. Because the buzzing noise of mosquitoes is annoying.
13. What will Abuzz do after it records the sound of a mosquito?
A. Compare it to a database and identify its species.
B. Make a somewhat different buzzing noise.
C. Release some chemicals to kill the mosquito.
D. Draw a map of the place where the mosquito was.
14. In which way could Abuzz help people?
A. It can help people control the number of mosquitoes.
B. It can help people avoid some species of mosquitoes.
C. It can help predict where mosquito-carried diseases are most likely to occur.
D. It can help record the mosquito hiding places very quickly.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Different Species of Mosquitoes in the World
B. New Ways to Fight Disease Caused by Mosquitoes
C. How to Identify Sounds Made by Different Mosquitoes
D. A New App That Can Identify Dangerous Mosquitoes
B 13. A 14. C 15. D

Research shows that playful teasing between parents and their children can be a way to strengthen relationships, bring up difficult topics, and just have fun. ___16___ Carol Bishop says, “You need to recognize if they are enjoying it,” There are also rules about what is okay and not okay to tease your child about. ___17___ Instead, tease kids about safe topics, like a messy room, or things that can be easily changed.
Teasing should also be a two-way street. ___18___ If they go too far making fun of you, be sure not to blow up. Instead, help them to learn boundaries and what may hurt others.
Teasing about a disappointing grade should only be used as a gentle reminder to study or do homework. It shouldn't be focused on the ability because that could make the situation worse. It’s not wrong to say to your child, “I'm disappointed that you got a C.”___19___ You need to examine if there is a learning disability or maybe they are depressed or being bullied.
From monsters under the bed to darkness and noises, fears that may seem silly to an adult may be very real to a child. ___20___ In fact, it could make them worse. Teasing a child who is frightened about something is not a way for them to expand their horizon—you need to make them feel secure.
A. Kids often feel hurt when teased by others.
B. Topics like appearance and weight are prohibited.
C. You have to be willing to let your child tease you about things.
D. But then you must work with them to figure out the cause.
E. But parents need to recognize when teasing becomes hurtful.
F. Laughing or teasing won't help them overcome their fears.
G. Teasing a child about sports performance can cause a child to quit the sport.
E 17. B 18. C 19. D 20. F
Carol Bishop says, “You need to recognize if they are enjoying it,”可知Carol Bishop说:“你需要认识到他们是否喜欢这样做。”
There are also rules about what is okay and not okay to tease your child about.
If they go too far making fun of you, be sure not to blow up. Instead, help them to learn boundaries and what may hurt others.
You need to examine if there is a learning disability or maybe they are depressed or being bullied.
In fact, it could make them worse.

As a freelance (自由职业的) writer, the structure of my workday can often vary wildly.
A He wanted to avoid long working hours.
