Siddharth Mandala, 18, the inventor of ElectroShoe—a device that enables the user to electrocute(电击)an offender and alarm the nearby police station and friends of their location, using Wi-Fi-has been a hit.
This inventor was inspired into action when he accompanied his mother to the Nirbhaya rallies(集会)in Hyderabad at 12. The streets, thick with anger, had his mind ticking, “There had to be a better way. Women may forget to carry pepper spray or other self-defence tools, but everyone puts on shoes.”
It took him two years to come up with the model, using social media to reach out to those who could help him. Mandala was awarded a letter of appreciation by the government of Telangana for his invention in May 2017.
Siddharth believes technology can truly change the quality of our lives. He launched Cognizance Welfare Initiative (CWI) two years ago to teach coding to students and helped them build microcontroller projects such as a GPS tracking system to locate their friends in danger areas.
The Hyderabad-based CWI inspires children to use science to enable them to create solutions for their communities, works to spread awareness about violence and conducts book drives, educates communities on water pollution and helps children improve their reading skills. So far CWI has taught over 500 children and plans to expand to two more villages. Mandala is now working with his friends on developing a programme to identify malignant melanoma(恶性黑素瘤)with a phone camera.
4. What inspired Siddharth Mandala to make the invention of ElectroShoe?
A. A trip to Hyderabad. B. Women his met in Hyderabad.
C. His mother’s encouragement. D. Bad experience with his friends.
5. What are Siddharth Mandala and his friends working on?
A. Fighting against air pollution. B. Teaching coding to poor students.
C. Developing a new programme. D. Improving children’s writing skills.
6. Which of the following can best describe Siddharth Mandala?
A. Brave and kind. B. Caring and creative.
C. Gentle and honest. D. Friendly and generous.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Saving-energy Invention B. A Programme Helping People
C. A Trip Changing a Man’s Life D. An Inspiring Young Inventor
C
An AI model can be used to detect stress in office workers based on how they use their mouse and keyboard. A new study suggests that a machine-learning model using these two elements was more accurate at detecting stress in people than a model that tracked their heart-rate data.
“We saw that the models that just used the mouse and keyboard data performed better than the models that had the heart-rate data in it,” says Mart Naegelin. a Ph. D. student at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, and one of the study’s authors.
Naegelin and her fellow researchers used machine-learning models to analyze data on keyboard-typing activity, mouse movements and heart-rate data. They also studied the data of a combination of two or all three of these elements to determine which performed best in terms of measuring stress. They found that the model trained on mouse and keyboard data performed better than the model that used mouse, keyboard and heart rates. Of the single-modality (形态) models, the heart-rate data performed the worst. “The test was conducted in an environment that simulated an office environment, so the results still need to be confirmed in real-life scenarios (情况),” Naegelin says.
In the experiment, participants were divided into three groups. A control group carried out assigned tasks, such as planning meetings and collecting data, with no additional work. A second group at times answered questions from managers in person in a mock interview scenario while completing other assigned tasks. And members of a third group were, at certain points, interrupted with additional questions sent through an online chat on top of tasks assigned to other groups. At regular intervals during the experiment, participants were asked to rate their stress levels through a computer questionnaire.
Researchers learned that workers made longer, less accurate movements with their mouse, as well as more typing errors, when they were stressed. Shorter, more direct movements with the mouse were tied to lower stress levels. The study didn’t focus on why increased levels of stress are thought to affect muscle activity.
The researchers say they believe a stress-detection system that logs keyboard and mouse movements might be beneficial as a self-help tool for employees alongside other initiatives to improve workplace mental health. But employee participation would need to be optional and based on informed consent (同意), and companies would need to commit to protecting user privacy.
It remains to be seen how this technology will evolve and be adopted in practice, but the potential for AI to contribute positively to employee well-being is an appealing avenue for future exploration.
8. What do we know from Naegelin’s study?
A. Heart-rate data has little connection with stress.
B. Mouse and keyboard data proves effective in stress detection.
C. Mouse data performs worst in measuring stress among all models.
D. Using more elements in a model increases accuracy in stress detection.
9. What is Paragragh 5 mainly about?
A. The research process. B. The research findings.
C. The research purpose. D. The research background.
10. What can we learn from the passage?
A. AI models based on mouse and keyboard data have been widely applied.
B. Naegelin’s study explains why muscle activity can affect stress levels.
C. Employers need to respect employees’ privacy while detecting stress.
D. A stress-detection system improves physical health at the workplace.
11. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A. To introduce a new model to detect stress.
B. To compare different models in stress detection.
C. To show the disadvantages of being overstressed.
D. To state the importance of a stress-detection system.
D
To learn to think is to learn to question. Those who don’t question never truly think for themselves. These are simple rules that have governed the advancement of science and human thought. Advancements are made when thinkers question theories and introduce new ones. Unfortunately, it is often the great and respected thinkers who end up slowing the progress of human thought. Aristotle was a brilliant philosopher whose theories explained much of the natural world, often incorrectly. He was so respected by the scientific community that even 1,200 years after his death, scientists were still trying to build upon his mistakes rather than correct them.
Brilliant minds can intimidate up-and-coming thinkers who are not confident of their abilities. They often believe they are not as good as the minds of giants such as Aristotle, leading many to accept current ideas instead of questioning them.
I like many thinkers of the past, once believed in my mental weakness. I didn’t question what was written on those pages. I respected them, and accepted whatever they told me. But that attitude soon changed. My mind’s independence was first developed in the classroom.
A 65-year-old science teacher once told me that light is a type of wave. I confidently believed that light is a wave. One day, however. I heard the German exchange student mentioned that light could be made up of particles (粒子). As the others laughed at his statement (陈述), I started to question my beliefs.
Maybe the teachers and textbooks hadn’t given me the whole story. I went to the library, did some research and learned of the light-as-a-wave vs light-as-a-particle debate. I realized I had gone through life accepting only half of the story as the whole truth.
Each new year brought more new facts, and I had even more questions. I found myself in the library after school, trying to find my own answers to gain a more complete understanding of what I thought I already knew. Even textbooks can be challenged. I learned to question my sources, I learned to be a thinker.
Questions are said to be the path to truth and I plan to continue questioning. How many things do we know for sure today that we will question in the future? I know nothing can escape the gravity of a black hole. This knowledge may change in the next 20 years. The one thing we can control now is our openness to discovery. Questions are the tools of open minds, and open minds are the key to intellectual advancement.
12. What does the author want to show by mentioning Aristotle in the first paragraph?
A. He is the greatest and respected philosopher of all time.
B. Advancements are made when thinkers question theories.
C. Great thinkers often make mistakes and then correct them.
D. Huge influence of great thinkers may block human thought.
13. What does the underlined word “intimidate” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Frighten. B. Encourage. C. Strengthen. D. Disappoint.
14. What can we conclude from the last paragraph?
A. The author is not quite sure about his future. B. We human beings don’t dare to predict future.
C. The theory of black holes will be true forever. D. Questioning is necessary to promote advancement.
15. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. All the thinkers’ theories of the past are not correct.
B. The author finally accepted that light is made up of particles.
C. The author looks down upon great thinkers all the time.
D. A thinker should always throw himself into the laboratory.

D A thinker should always throw himself into the laboratory.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. D 15. A
