One day in Bronx, a first-grade teacher sat down in a barbershop for a haircut and one of his students walked in, sat down, and started looking antsy. He thought to himself that it was a perfect opportunity to practice reading, a thought that changed Alvin Irbyˈs life, and heˈs filling many barbershops around the US with free books to trim back childhood illiteracy (文盲). His non-profit, Barbershop Books, has delivered 50,000 free books to more than 200 barbershops in mainly black neighborhoods in 24 states, considering the fact that in Black American communities, barbershops are like community centers where people gather naturally.
"Our program is about getting kids to say three words: ‘Iˈm a reader.ˈ" he said. Irbyˈs program may seem straightforward but thereˈs a lot of thought behind it. He puts a colorful, kid-sized bookshelf in each shop, making it inviting to children. The books displayed are all carefully chosen based on recommendations from his target audience. The bookshelves display the covers of the books, helping kids who may be interested in reading seize the opportunity for themselves, whether theyˈre in the barberˈs chair or theyˈre awaiting their dad or friend. And Irby involves the barbers in his mission—training them to engage kids about reading. "We want them to encourage kids to use the reading space," he said. "Then they can talk to them about how they like reading, how funny a book was or tell them about another book another kid was reading."
Denny Moe was the first barber to work with Irby. Moe had previously offered video games at his Harlem shop to bring in extra income, but he was willing to quit that to help the community. "I decided to pay it forward by getting rid of the video games, putting books in here, just to get the kidsˈ minds going," he said.
"These books, I would say, have power," 8-year-old boy Chance said. Thatˈs what keeps Irby motivated. "Iˈm just excited that we get to create a safe space for boys to do something thatˈs really life changing," he said. "Thatˈs what I really believe reading is. It unlocks potential."
24、 What does the underlined word in paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. Restless. B. Serious. C. Relieved. D. Joyful.
25、Why does the program appeal to children?
A. Because it expresses childrenˈs requirements.
B. Because it shows childrenˈs characteristics.
C. Because it largely protects childrenˈs security.
D. Because it considers childrenˈs preferences.
26、 What made Denny Moe give up the video games finally?
A. That he wanted to attract more customers.
B. That he wanted to make a difference.
C. That he wanted to bring in more money.
D. That he wanted to meet different demands.
27、 What is the best title for this passage?
A. Black Kids, Potential Big Readers
B. Free Books, Good Way to Pay Back
C. Colourful Covers, Nice Try to Attract Kids
D. Small Barbershops, Treasure House to Start Reading

Researchers from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the University of Cologne (UC) in Germany have developed an Al-based learning system.
The idea is simple yet effective: a webcam (网络摄像头) tracks studentsˈ eye movements. Maike Schindler, a math professor from the UC, and her team have designed hundreds of math tasks involving basic math skills. Depending on the task, specific patterns appear, which are shown digitally on a heat map, with red indicating areas where the children look frequently and green showing the areas where they look only briefly. Confident students quickly get to key problem areas, while struggling ones often look aimlessly.

"Tracking eye movements helps recognize different learning strategies through patterns and finally create detailed support reports for teachers," says Maike Schindler. "The AI system sorts the patterns. On the basis, the software selects tailored learning videos and exercises for the pupil," says robotics professor Achim Lilienthal from the TUM.
To develop the new eye-tracking technology, Professor Lilienthal has drawn on his robotics research experience. In that work, he used eye trackers with a small human-like robot named Nao. It enables better communication with humans. However, these advanced systems with high accuracy cost many thousands of euros.
To find a better solution for schools, the researchers cleverly mix technical experience with math knowledge. Instead of using high-end eye-trackers, their AI-driven approach uses regular webcams and makes up for low accuracy through AI improvements. "By focusing on problem areas, the AI adapts the eye-tracking with the webcam, achieving accuracy comparable to high-end tools," Professor Lilienthal says.
Germanyˈs Wulfen Comprehensive School is the first to introduce the system. A math test there showed that about one-third of the new students struggled with basic math. With the AI system, one teacher can now support five students at once—a significant improvement over traditional one-on-one teaching. "As education faces teacher shortages and increasing pressure to deal with individual learning styles, our system for promoting basic math skills is simply excellent support for schools," says Schindler.
28、 What is the function of the heat map?
A. Presenting studentsˈ focus areas.
B. Measuring the difficulty of math tasks.
C. Tracking the eye movements of students.
D. Comparing studentsˈ problem-solving speeds.
29、 What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The systemˈs advantages in recognizing eye problems.
B. The systemˈs challenges in tracking student behavior.
C. The systemˈs role in supporting personalized learning.
D. The systemˈs progress in upgrading specific patterns.
30、 Which best describes the AI-driven eye-tracking technology?
A. Helpful but slow. B. Simple and relaxing.
C. Creative but costly. D. Affordable and effective.
31、 What does Wulfen Comprehensive School get from the system?
A. Reduction in teacher training. B. Adaptation to learning needs.
C. Inspiration for advanced math. D. Absence of human judgment.

Warming seas across the globe are endangering coral reefs (珊瑚礁), a key ecosystem that supports marine life to live and thrive. As a possible way to save them from extinction, scientists have recently frozen and revived groups of adult corals for the first time, according to a recent study.
Freezing biological materials, or "cryopreserving" them, refers to keeping them in a deep freeze for long periods without affecting the cellˈs viability (活性), according to the Science Times website.
This method usually cools them to very low temperatures, commonly to -196℃. Since cells would normally die at such a low temperature due to the formation of ice inside, scientists need to monitor the freezing rate and choose the freezing medium carefully.
Researchers in the US experimented with freezing pea-sized pieces of a common coral in Hawaii. After removing the microbes on the corals, they sealed the corals in metal containers filled with a chemical solution that partially dehydrated (脱水) them and helped control ice growth.
When the corals reached a temperature of around -200℃, the remaining water in the corals solidified into a glassy form. The corals were still alive, with their life-driving functions becoming extremely slow. After being cryopreserved for a few minutes, the researchers pulled the corals out and placed them in warm water. In two minutes, they started consuming oxygen—a sign of them staying alive.
Previously, researchers had already successfully cryopreserved coral larvae (幼虫), according to a study in 2018.However, the larvae can only be collected when corals lay eggs, which happens just a few nights each year. "Thatˈs putting a lot of eggs in one basket," US marine scientist Liza Roger told Science News.
While this breakthrough offers more hope to the worldˈs corals, thereˈs more work to be done. A few days after thawing (解冻), the corals became "stressed out" from the process and were killed by the bacteria (细菌) they normally live in harmony with. The researchers are working on using antibiotics to help them survive for a longer period of time.
32、 What is the purpose of the recent study?
A. To bring dead corals back to life.
B. To freeze and revive coral larvae.
C. To find a way to preserve corals.
D. To study the conditions of coral growth.
33、 What happened to the corals when they were cryopreserved?
A. They died for the time being.
B. Their life functions slowed down.
C. They remained alive and unchanged.
D. They fed on microbes in the containers.
34、 What does Roger think of cryopreserving coral larvae?
A. It seems not a reliable solution.
B. It needs a large number of eggs.
C. It holds promise for restoring corals.
D. It requires overly expensive technology.
