I grew up in a poor family. This was something I did not realize until I was older. I thought everyone in the city took the bus, because everyone in my neighborhood took the bus. I thought everyone in the city used the food bank, because all my friends’ cupboards were filled with the same government-labeled food that filled my cupboards. We all wore hand-me-down clothes.
Grocery shopping was my first experience understanding that my family was a little different. My mom used paper money that looked different from the paper money others in line were using. I asked my mom why our money looked different. She said that we used food stamps that were helped by the government so we could eat.
In high school, I was still embarrassed and wished we were not so poor, but I loved my mom and the other members of my family and knew we had things to be proud of. My mother taught me how to love and told me to believe in myself. Growing up in poverty taught me perseverance (毅力). I have always believed in myself and my abilities. I knew I could focus on school and build a life that looked different from my childhood.
As I became a man, I started understanding how my experiences enabled me to be resilient (有韧性的), and how to respect people for who they are as an individual—and not by what they have. I think there are a lot of fixed images placed on those experiencing poverty that do not actually come from the people experiencing it. These judgments come from people on the outside trying not to look into the experience. Hardworking , trustworthy, reliable, clean, efficient, successful and disciplined are all words not typically associated with poverty. But those words are very much shown by those experiencing poverty. I am proud to be who I am and proud of where I’m from.
4. Why did the mom use different paper money in the shop?
A. To show our difference. B. To spend the extra stamps.
C. To support the government. D. To buy food without real money.
5. What can we learn about the mom from Paragraph 3?
A. She was wise. B. She was patient. C. She was single. D. She was educated.
6. What’s the author’s attitude towards to his experience?
A. Frightened. B. Annoyed. C. Grateful. D. Confused.
7. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Struggling With Being Poor B. Lessons From Growing Up Poor
C. Staying Poor Means Staying Foolish D. My Childhood Memories
D 5. A 6. C 7. B

根据第二段最后一句“She said that we used food stamps that were helped by the government so we could eat.(她说我们用的是政府发放的食品券,这样我们才有饭吃)”可知,妈妈说“我们”用的是政府发放的食品券,这样“我们”才有饭吃,即妈妈用的是食品券,不是真的货币,故选D。
根据第三段第二句“My mother taught me how to love and told me to believe in myself.(母亲教我如何去爱,告诉我要相信自己)”可知,妈妈教会“我”如何去爱,告诉“我”要相信自己,即妈妈是充满智慧的,故选A。
根据最后一段“As I became a man, I started understanding how my experiences enabled me to be resilient (有韧性的), and how to respect people for who they are as an individual—and not by what they have. I am proud to be who I am and proud of where I’m from.(当我长大成人后,我开始明白我的经历是如何让我变得坚韧,以及如何尊重一个人的个性,而不是他们拥有什么。

C
Researchers have set a new record for data transmission. Using one small computer chip, they could move 1. 84 petabits of data per second. That equals 122 million Netflix movies streaming at the same time.
The Danish team reported this new achievement in Nature Photonics on October 20th,2022. These researchers took advantage of a special phenomenon of light called optical frequency comb To make one, you take a laser and shine it through a special passage. Out pops a carefully-crafted rainbow, with all of its colors spaced out evenly.
When a laser (激光) shines through a device called a modulator (调制器), the modulator transforms packets of data from their digital form into patterns of light. Then it controls the laser’s light to create these patterns. One pattern might involve turning on and off rapidly. The patterns then zip along fiber optic cables (光纤电缆) at the speed of light. At the other end, a receiver changes them back into digital data.
Most fiber optic cables have just one core-a single pipe through which that light can travel. To send much data at once, you have to fit multiple rays of light into that one pipe. To travel together without messing up each other’s data, the light rays must have unique wavelengths. Now, a single laser shining into a special type of chip would split into many different wavelengths. This happens because the light travels around a tiny ring made of a special material. The ring the Danish team used created 223 different wavelengths-or a rainbow of 223 colors!
The Danish group also used a new type of fiber optic cable that contains 37 separate pipes. Each can carry the same wavelengths as the others without interference (干扰). So the team started with 223 different colors, and then split each color 37 ways. The grand total was 8,251 different rays of light. Each ray got sent through a modulator that controlled the light to carry data.
Such a high rate may be useful in data centers even sooner because of the “energy and cost savings” it promises, says Bill Corcoran, a physicist at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. The new technology uses fewer lasers than current methods, which makes it more energy-efficient. And that could help lessen the Internet’s climate impact.
8. What can we learn about optical frequency comb in Paragraph 2?
A. It is the principle of digital communication. B. It is the base of the data-moving technology.
C. It gave the researchers inspiration for the chip. D. It reminded the researchers of the use of lasers.
9. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. How digital data is carried. B. How a modulator is created.
C. How fiber optic cables work. D. How a laser controls light.
10. What is a must for data to travel along a light cable without interference?
A. A long enough fiber optic cable. B. Different lasers shining in cables.
C. Light rays with different wavelengths. D. Sufficient tiny rings made of a special material.
11. Why can the new technology be used before long?
A. It uses fewer modulators. B. It is cheaper to maintain.
C. It promises larger future profits. D. It is more environmental-friendly.
B 9. A 10. C 11. D
根据文章第二段中的“These researchers took advantage of a special phenomenon of light called optical frequency comb (光学频率梳). To make one, you take a laser and shine it through a special passage. Out pops a carefully-crafted rainbow, with all of its colors spaced out evenly. (这些研究人员利用了一种叫做光学频率梳的特殊光现象。要制作一个,你需要用激光通过一个特殊的通道。这时会弹出一个精心制作的彩虹,所有的颜色都均匀分布。)”以及后文描述的利用光学频率梳进行数据传输的过程,可以推断出光学频率梳是数据传输技术的基础。故选B。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“When a laser(激光)shines through a device called a modulator(调制器), the modulator transforms packets of data from their digital form into patterns of light. Then it controls the laser’s light to create these patterns. One pattern might involve turning on and off rapidly. The patterns then zip along fiber optic cables(光纤电缆) at the speed of light. At the other end, a receiver changes them back into digital data. (当激光通过一个叫做调制器的设备时,调制器将数据包从数字形式转换为光模式。然后它控制激光的光来创建这些模式。一种模式可能涉及快速开启和关闭。然后这些模式以光速沿着光纤电缆传输。在另一端,接收器将它们转换回数字数据。)”可知,这段主要描述了数字数据是如何被携带和传输的,即数字数据如何通过调制器转换为光模式,并通过光纤电缆传输,最后在接收端被转换回数字数据。因此,选项A“How digital data is carried.(数字数据是如何被携带的)”概括本段主要内容,符合题意。故选A。
根据文章第四段中的“To travel together without messing up each other’s data, the light rays must have unique wavelengths. (为了在一起传输而不干扰彼此的数据,光线必须具有独特的波长。)”可知,数据要沿着光缆无干扰地传输,光线必须具有不同的波长。因此,选项C“Light rays with different wavelengths.(具有不同波长的光线)”符合题意。故选C。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段中的“Such a high rate may be useful in data centers even sooner because of the “energy and cost savings” it promises, says Bill Corcoran, a physicist at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. (这种高速率的数据传输可能由于其“节能和成本节约”的优势,很快就会在数据中心中得到应用,澳大利亚墨尔本莫纳什大学的物理学家比尔·科科兰表示。)”以及“The new technology uses fewer lasers than current methods, which makes it more energy-efficient. And that could help lessen the Internet’s climate impact.( 这项新技术比当前方法使用的激光更少,这使得它更加节能。这有助于减轻互联网对气候变化的影响。)”可知,新技术之所以能够很快被应用,是因为它更环保,即更节能且有助于减少互联网对气候的影响。故选D。
D
Chinese food is well received by the world. Who doesn’t long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East — the ancient custom of “tonic (滋补) food”.
Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil (麻油) hot pot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach, are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes, are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.
The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry (枸杞), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.
So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with a serving of fish soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for.
12. What is the present situation of tonic food?
A. It is catching less attention. B. It is enjoyed by many young people.
C. It is well-known worldwide. D. It is becoming increasingly popular.
13. What is believed to benefit new mothers?
A. Chinese cabbage. B. Fruit tea.
C. Fish soup. D. Sesame oil hot pot.
14. Which of the following best explains “catering” underlined in Paragraph 3?
A. Medicine. B. Restaurant.
C. Manufacture. D. Agriculture.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Charm of Chinese Cuisine
B. The Popularity of Tonic Food
C. An Introduction of Chinese Tonic Food
D. Differences Between Hot Food and Cold Food
A 13. D 14. B 15. C
根据第一段中“But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East — the ancient custom of “tonic (滋补) food”.(但关于中餐,有一个有趣的概念在西方几乎闻所未闻,而东方的年轻人也越来越忽视它——那就是“滋补”的古老习俗)”可知,滋补食品它引起的关注越来越少。故选A项。
根据第二段中“For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil (麻油) hot pot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body.(例如,新妈妈在产后的第一个月里每天吃麻油火锅曾经是一种习俗。人们相信这道菜对肌肉有益,减轻疼痛,促进血液循环,刺激出汗,温暖身体)”可知,人们认为麻油火锅对新妈妈有好处。故选D项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry(枸杞), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.(在许多餐馆的菜单上都可以找到枸杞等中草药,它们要么被添加到果茶中,要么被作为有益的添加剂添加到菜肴中。这些草药吸引了顾客,比如工作过度的办公室职员,他们需要适度的提神)”可知,此处为使用滋补食品以健康生活的习俗也影响了餐饮业。故可猜测划线单词catering为“餐饮”的意思,结合选项B项Restaurant“餐饮,餐厅”意思一致。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第一段中“But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East — the ancient custom of “tonic (滋补) food”.(但关于中餐,有一个有趣的概念在西方几乎闻所未闻,而东方的年轻人也越来越忽视它——那就是“滋补”的古老习俗)”可知,文章主要介绍了正日益被东方年轻人说忽视的中国的补品。

Chinese food is well received by the world. Who doesn’t long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East — the ancient custom of “tonic (滋补) food”.
A Medicine. B. Restaurant.
C. Manufacture. D. Agriculture.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Charm of Chinese Cuisine
B. The Popularity of Tonic Food
C. An Introduction of Chinese Tonic Food
D. Differences Between Hot Food and Cold Food
