Marion Sheppard felt sorry for herself when she began to lose her sight in her 40s. Since childhood, Sheppard had always been a keen dancer. But now she rarely left her Bronx apartment. She was afraid that, unable to see a stranger approaching, she would be knocked down on the streets. In fact, mostly, she worried about the way she would appear to the world. She wondered constantly, “What if people look at me differently, and treat me differently?”
After several months of grief and fear, Sheppard resolved to keep moving. Hard as it was, Sheppard forced herself to go out. She attended a social event for people with visual problems, and was shocked to find that not only did no one dance, but they barely moved. “Oh no!” she told herself. “That is not the way I want to live!” She bought a walking stick and named it Tyreek, which she had always planned on giving a son if she had one. Sheppard continued to work at her library job at The New York Times until her vision worsened in her 50s. And she kept moving and dancing. Sheppard was 61 when she attended a summer camp for the blind in 2008, where she taught her first line dancing class.
After that, she asked a Manhattan community center run by Visions if she could teach her class there, but she was told no and that it would be too dangerous for the students. Still, she persisted, and soon convinced the administrators to let her teach line dancing on a volunteer basis. Her classes proved to be so popular that in 2012, Visions hired her to be on staff. Sheppard was excited.
She was teaching over a dozen students dance steps. But Sheppard instructed her beloved students on far more than that. With constant encouragement, she also managed to make dignity and independence take root in them. In her classes, the students could truly be themselves.
28. Why was Sheppard unwilling to leave her apartment?
A. She had a lot of housework to do.
B. She had to attend her son at home.
C. She was afraid of being looked down upon.
D. She was worried about getting involved in accidents.
29. How did Sheppard feel about her walking stick?
A. She was often greatly embarrassed by it.
B. She regarded it as a temporary necessity.
C. She treated it simply as an ordinary tool.
D She valued it as something special.
30. Why did the community center refuse Sheppard’s request at first?
A. They didn’t have enough space for dance classes.
B. They were concerned about the students’ safety.
C. They didn’t believe Sheppard could teach well.
D. They thought dancing wasn’t suitable for blind people.
31. What did Sheppard’s students learn from her?
A. Humor and patience. B. Intelligence and honesty.
C. Imagination and creativity. D. Self-respect and self-reliance.
【答案】28 C 29. D 30. B 31. D

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018.The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time (屏幕设备使用时间) after school, including how much time they spent swiping their mobile phone. watching TV, Netflix, or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programs. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety (焦虑) compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time,67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic (学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
32. What were the students asked to do after they reported time spent on after-school activities?
A. Talk about their lifestyles. B. Introduce their after-school activities.
C. Report their mental states on a scale. D. Answer questions about screen time use.
33. What do the researchers find about teenage girls?
A. They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B. They take more active part in after-school activities.
C. They have lower levels of anxiety.
D. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
34. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4?
A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. High screen time is common among teenagers.
C. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
35. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study?
A. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
B. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They allow teenagers to become better learners.
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. B 35. A

细节理解题。根据文章第三段中“And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety (焦虑) compared to boys.(他们预计女孩在心理健康的负面指标上得分会更高,因为早期的研究发现,与男孩相比,女孩往往有更高的焦虑水平。)”可知,研究人员发现青少年女孩过多的屏幕时间可能对她们更有害,因为她们往往比男孩有更高的焦虑水平。故选D项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段中“…even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time,67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time.(……即使在参加课外活动的学生中,也有46%的人仍然超过了建议的两小时的屏幕时间。同时,67%没有参加课后活动的学生也有超过两小时的屏幕时间。)”和最后一句“Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.(总的来说,这表明青少年普遍屏幕时间过长。)”可知,作者使用第四段中的数字是为了表明青少年普遍屏幕时间过长。故选B项。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段中“While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic (学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.(虽然过去的研究已经证明了课后活动对社会和学业发展的重要性,但本研究表明它们对良好的心理健康结果也很重要。)”可知,根据这项新的研究,课后活动之所以如此重要,是因为它们有助于改善青少年的心理健康。故选A项。

Learning with Short Videos: Tips for Students
Short videos are not just for fun — they can be great tools for learning. Many students use them to study English, science, or even history. But how can you make sure you learn well from them? Here are some simple tips.
Choose the right videos
Not all short videos are good for learning. Look for ones made by teachers or educational channels. ____36____ For example, if you’re learning grammar, choose a video that explains just one rule at a time.
Watch with a goal
Before you press “play”, ask yourself: “What do I want to learn from this?” Maybe it’s a new English word or a math formula. ____37____ This helps you stay focused, not just watch passively.
Don’t watch too many at once
It’s easy to keep scrolling to the next video, but your brain needs time to take in the information. Watch 1-2 videos, then stop for a while. ____38____ You can also write down key points or explain what you learned to a friend.
Use subtitles (字幕)
Most learning videos have subtitles. Turn them on, especially for English videos. ____39____ You can read along and learn how words are spelled and used in sentences.
Practice what you learn
Watching is just the first step. To really learn, you need to practice. If a video teaches a new dance move, try it yourself. ____40____ This way, you’ll remember better and make the learning stick.
A. They should be clear and not too fast.
B. Keep this question in your mind while watching.
C. Some videos can help you relax after a long day.
D. This helps you take in the knowledge more deeply.
E. You can also use them to check your pronunciation.
F. This makes it easier to follow, even if the speaker talks fast.
G. If it’s a science experiment, try to do a simple version at home.

【答案】Dear Tanaka,
I’m so delighted to hear that you are interested in my favorite sports that I’m eager to share my experience with you.
When it comes to sports, it can be said with certainty that running is the first one to come into my mind. About 3 years ago, lacking in exercise, I picked up running under the guidance of my father. Although it was painful for me to start, it was the encouragement from my father that kept me running 3 times a week. Till today, running has played an irreplaceable role in my life, without which, I wouldn’t have built a strong body and fostered a spirit of persistent in attaining a goal.
What about your favorite sports? Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

第二节 (满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
This past summer, my family went on our annual vacation in a cottage on a lake. There were various activities to keep everyone busy: swimming, fishing and building sand castle on the beach. In the evenings, we gathered on the beach, having great fun.
However, by the third day of our vacation, I noticed my sister, Jane, spent most of her time watching videos and looking through online shops indoors. She was so addicted to her cell phone! Over dinner, I told Jane we would hike to the top of the mountain across the lake the following morning. I stared at her, “Put your phone away and enjoy the scenery. It’s really amazing.”
“Well,” Jane shrugged her shoulders and answered unwillingly, “there are some bargains tomorrow in several online shops, so I’ll not be available.”
“Come out to enjoy the fresh air and many views. Hiking is fun!” (嘟囔),“I can not walk that far.”
When I said it only took half an hour of steady walking to climb to the top, she nodded, “OK. I’ll go.”
The next morning was perfect for a hike, with sunny clear skies and gentle winds. I got up early and packed some sandwiches and bottles of water into my backpack along with the camera. Jane came slowly downstairs, and announced in a very unenthusiastic voice, “I’m ready to go, Jim.”
Anyway, we stepped out of our cottage and quite a different view unfolded before our eyes. Against the blue skies, a rough path wound to the top of the mountain across the lake with wild flowers and grass on both sides. The sunlight brightened on the glassy surface of the lake. We began from the path.
“I’m still wondering if this is a good idea, but if you could do it, I could also do.” She complained, frowning.

Paragraph 2:
Reaching the top, Jane widened her eyes, shouting, “How awesome!”.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
She followed me, her mind wandering. Minutes later, we started to climb a steep slope. Jane sighed, dragging her legs behind me. I was surprised to find some rarely-seen trees and flowers, and took many photos but Jane showed no interest. She stopped and sat on a rock, thirsty, sweaty and bored. I handed her a bottle of water and we took a break. “I missed my phone,” she complained as we continued climbing. Though unhappy, she just climbed along with me.
Reaching the top, Jane widened her eyes, shouting, “How awesome!” She looked around dreamily, her eyes twinkling with indescribably wild excitement. A refreshing breeze brushed the mountain top, miles of trees spread out below us and birds chirped between branches. We sat on a large rock and ate sandwiches, enjoying the sounds, the smells and the sunlight.“Anyone still wants her phone?” I joked. She rolled her eyes, laughing out loud. The next morning, Jane danced to my room, crying, “Let's hike around the lake today.” “Sure, get our backpack then,” I beamed, relieved and joyful.

B. She had to attend her son at home.

B. They were concerned about the students’ safety.
C. They didn’t believe Sheppard could teach well.
D. They thought dancing wasn’t suitable for blind people.
31. What did Sheppard’s students learn from her?
A. Humor and patience. B. Intelligence and honesty.
C. Imagination and creativity. D. Self-respect and self-reliance.

33 What do the researchers find about teenage girls?
