When Hamisi was a little boy, he enjoyed seeing his father, a fisherman, come home with fish every day from work. By the time he was 10 years old, Hamisi said he wanted to learn how to fish. His early interaction with the ocean made him love everything about it, and so did his love for protecting the environment.
Now Hamisi is a turtle (海龟) police officer and a member of the Tiwi Turtle Police, a group that started in 2020. “Turtles love laying their eggs along the beach here in Tiwi, Kwale County, but they have faced many challenges over the past years, including being polluted and poached (偷猎), and we want to protect them, starting with their eggs,” said Hamisi.
“I also protect the fish, but turtles are an endangered species that I’m anxious about. Imagine a mother giving birth to a child and then losing it, and she does it again and it is killed, and then finally the mother is killed. That’s sad, and I don’t want turtles to go through that,” said Hamisi.
Other than patrolling (巡逻) the beach, the turtle police also check turtles by tracking (追踪) them. Hamisi explained that a turtle they had labeled recently was last found in Mozambique, but they guessed it was either killed or in danger because they suddenly lost track of it. There are also many other dangers that risk the lives of turtles. “Most turtles either feed on plastic, mistaking it for food or are caught in nets that have been left in the ocean,” said Hamisi.
Hamisi and his community have called on locals to provide protection for turtles to ensure that their numbers are holding steady. And they hope action will be taken to prevent plastic waste from entering oceans.
4. What made Hamisi choose to be a turtle police officer?
A. His father’s advice.
B. His childhood dream.
C. His love for the ocean.
D. His support from a group.
5. What is one of Hamisi’s duties as a turtle police officer?
A. Conducting beach clean-ups.
B. Training new police officers.
C. Interacting with tourists.
D. Protecting turtle nesting sites.
6. What does the story of the turtle Hamisi lost track of show?
A. Studying turtles requires continuous efforts.
B. Tracking turtles faces many difficulties.
C. Rescuing turtles needs more money.
D. Protecting turtles is important.

Loneliness is a big problem for mental health. It can even make the risk of dying go up by 45%. But scientists found that spending time in the natural environment of the city can help people feel less lonely.
This study is the first to explore how the environment can affect loneliness. The researchers used a smartphone app to collect real-time data instead of asking people to remember how they felt later.
The study found that feeling crowded can make people feel 30% more lonely. But when people can see trees or hear birds, their loneliness goes down by 28%. Feeling included in a social group also reduces loneliness by 21%. When people feel included and are also in nature, the good effects get even better, going up by another 18%.
The researchers suggested ways to help reduce loneliness. They said, “We should create more ways for people to feel included and spend time in nature, especially in big cities.”
Spending time in nature is known to make people feel better. For example, walking in the woods can save a lot of money in mental health costs. In the UK, it saves at least £185 million a year.
The study used the app to collect data from people living in cities all over the world. More than 750 people gave 16,600 assessments (评价). The study didn’t include everyone, but when the researchers looked at age, education, and jobs, they still found that nature and feeling included really help reduce loneliness.
Johanna Gibbons, who was part of the research team, said, “Cities are growing fast. We need to create more places for nature in cities where people can be happy and healthy.”
8. How was the research carried out?
A. By relying on people’s memory.
B. By surveying 750 participants.
C. By collecting data through an app.
D. By doing experiments in the laboratory.
9. What did the study find about loneliness?
A. Seeing trees or hearing birds can reduce loneliness.
B. Feeling crowded can reduce loneliness.
C. Nature makes people feel more lonely.
D. Social groups increase loneliness.
10. What did the researchers suggest to help reduce loneliness?
A. People should spend more time alone.
B. Cities should have more nature areas.
C. People should avoid social groups.
D. Cities shouldn’t grow bigger.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Improve Mental Health
B. Nature Is Important in Cities
C. The Benefits of Walking in the Woods
D. Nature Helps Reduce Loneliness
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. D

【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“But when people can see trees or hear birds, their loneliness goes down by 28%. (但当人们能看到树木或听到鸟鸣时,他们的孤独感会降低28%)”可知,接触自然景象和声音可以减轻孤独感。故选A项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“They said, ‘We should create more ways for people to feel included and spend time in nature, especially in big cities.’(研究人员指出:‘我们应当开辟更多途径,让民众获得社会归属感并有机会亲近自然——这一点在大城市中尤为重要。')”

The UK is dealing with major river issues this year. A report by the Angling Trust says this spring was the hottest and driest ever recorded, causing serious pollution in many rivers. This is especially worrying because healthy rivers are important for drinking water, wildlife, and outdoor activities.
Only 14% of the country’s rivers are in good health. The high temperatures have made chemical pollution worse, showing that climate change is putting “heavy pressure” on Britain’s waterways.
From March to June, the UK experienced extremely hot and dry weather, leading to severe ecological impacts on rivers. With temperatures higher than normal and significantly reduced rainfall, river water levels dropped sharply. This concentrated pollution from farms, urban runoff and treated wastewater worsened water quality. The results of low oxygen level, high temperatures and increased poison have caused mass fish deaths — 87 incidents reported by the Angling Trust so far this year. In extreme cases, such as the River Teme and River Redlake, emergency fish rescues were required to prevent further losses.
A study by a water testing team also found that many river water samples contained too many harmful substances. Over half had too much nitrate (硝酸盐), which makes algae (藻类) grow too fast. Algae can use up all the oxygen in the water, impairing other living things. Another harmful chemical, ammonia, was also higher than in past years, making the water quality even worse. Small insects and plants that fish rely on for food are also disappearing due to these changes.
To save water, some areas like Yorkshire have banned the use of garden hoses (橡皮管). People are not allowed to water plants, wash cars, or fill pools with hoses. Those who ignore the rules may have to pay a fine of up to £1,000.
Experts said climate change is causing more hot and dry weather. This puts a lot of stress on water supplies, river animals, and the environment. The Angling Trust warns that action must be taken now — before it’s too late.
12. What worsened the river issues?
A. The extreme weather.
B. The overuse of drinking water.
C. The chemical pollution.
D. The wastewater pollution.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The method of protecting fish.
B. The impacts of weather on rivers.
C. A sharp drop in water level.
D. The fish in need of rescue.
14. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “impairing” in paragraph 4?
A. Annoying. B. Impressing.
C. Exploring. D. Hurting.
15. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To inspire people to protect wild animals.
B. To call on people to protect the rivers in the UK.
C. To inform a latest study about harmful material.
D. To encourage a positive attitude to climate change.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. B

I’d love to share a memorable family moment with you. It was last winter when we had a heavy snowfall. My family and I decided to have a snowball fight in the backyard and we built snowmen. The best part was when my dad, who is usually very serious, got hit by a snowball and started laughing.
It was a moment of pure joy and togetherness. This experience taught me that even in the coldest weather, family warmth can make everything feel better and that no matter how busy life gets, it’s important to take time to enjoy simple moments with the ones we love.

Brenda lives in an apartment alone. Her son is abroad with his wife and kids. On Brenda’s birthday two years ago, her son gave her a car as a gift. However, last year, her eyesight began to get worse. At first, it was just a bit of blurriness (模糊) when she tried to recognize faces from a distance. But later, the situation gradually worsened and she found it harder and harder to see clearly. Therefore, the car had been sitting in the garage (车库) ever since.
One day, Brenda grasped her support cane (手杖) while trying to cross the road safely. She could hear many cars speeding past her. She was so frightened that she hoped someone would give her a hand.
Theodore observed Brenda from the supermarket’s parking lot where he worked, shining people’s shoes for a living. At first, he thought Brenda was just afraid to cross the road. He didn’t know she was almost blind. “Hey, lady, watch out”, he shouted, waving at her. But Brenda didn’t hear him.
Anxious about what could happen, Theodore stormed onto the street. He grabbed Brenda’s hand and led her to the sidewalk.
“Thank you so much,” Brenda said, relieved to be safely on the sidewalk. She thought Theodore was a worker from the supermarket. “Could you help me with my shopping?” she asked hopefully. Theodore, though surprised, agreed. He helped her shop and carried them to the taxi.
Around the same time the following days, they met quite often at the parking lot. Theodore was glad to see Brenda and always helped her shop.
One day, as they walked to the taxi, Brenda asked, “How long have you been working for the supermarket?” Theodore hesitated, then explained, “No, ma’am. I just try to help when I can. I lost my business and had to sell my house. Now I shine shoes here to make ends meet.”
Brenda felt shocked. She quietly walked away deep in thought.

B. Tracking turtles faces many difficulties.
C. Rescuing turtles needs more money.
D. Protecting turtles is important.
7. Which of the following can best describe Hamisi?
A. Brave and honest.

Theodore observed Brenda from the supermarket’s parking lot, where he worked, shining people’s shoes for a living.
She quietly walked away, deep in thought.
