Many people like to travel when they have time off from school or work. They might go to their hometown to see their family, or travel somewhere far. But not everyone does this. More and more people are choosing to take a “staycation”.
A staycation is a new word for a time when people stay at home on vacation or take day trips from their home to local places of interest. Some people might travel around their city, visiting local (本地的) parks and museums. Others might try countryside trips and take part in local festivals. People like me love to just stay at home.
I had a staycation of my own during the summer. I slept late every day. I worked on music and played video games. I wasn’t too lonely. I had my cat to play with, and I got together with some of my friends around the city.

Home also means working together. In Leo’s family, everyone helps. His father cooks delicious meals, his mother cleans the living room, and Leo waters the plants. They even have a cat named Cookie who “helps” by sleeping on the sofa!

Most students do not enjoy doing housework. Some of them think that cleaning the bathroom or cooking dinner for the family is boring. However, if you try the following ways, you will find that housework is not as boring as you think.
Learn to do small things
You should learn to do small things. For example, you can do the dishes, sweep the floor or make the bed. Part of growing up is to be able to take care of yourself. Doing some things around the house shows that you are becoming responsible.
Divide (分担) housework among the family
In fact, it’s too tiring for one person to do all the housework alone. It’s good to divide housework into different parts. All the family members will do the housework together. Dividing housework among all the family members will make everyone’s job much easier.
Make it fun
Cooking is one part of housework. Cooking can be very fun if you put your heart into it. If you learn how to cook your favourite food, you will also get a feeling of satisfaction (满足).
16.You can start by learning to do some small things EXCEPT (除了) _________.
A.doing the dishes B.sweeping the floor
C.making the bed D.repairing the house
17.The underlined word “responsible” probably means ________ in Chinese.

C.It’s about how to divide housework into parts.
D.It’s about how to find the joy of our life.
The words “house” and “home” don’t mean the same in English. A house is a building with four walls and a roof. In most houses there are rooms for different activities. People can eat in the kitchen, sleep in the bedroom, wash in the bathroom and relax in the living room.
But a home is a house full of people with their favourite rooms. For example, my favourite room is my bedroom. It has all of my things in it. My mum likes reading in the comfortable armchair in the living room. Jasper, the cat, lies under her feet. My sister Sally spends a lot of time in the garden! It’s her favorite place. And my dad can cook really well so he’s usually in the kitchen.
When I am away from home, I sometimes feel homesick. I miss all my things, and everyday family activities. Our house is noisy in the morning before work or school. Then, when I get back in the evening, Jasper jumps on me with his dirty feet and there is a fantastic smell of my dad’s cooking.
So home is the people and animals living in a house, and the things in the room that are special to us. It’s the activities we do, our feelings and the relaxing environment. But home is also the community. I often help neighbors and they look after Jasper when we are away. And sometimes there’s a big party with all the neighbors. That’s what is home for me.

In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck. But when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability.
Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He’s also a good listener.
At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults. In others, he notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a hand, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same thing I like. We share experiences and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humor too. He likes to laugh with me. This is how we share in the Joy of being friends, as I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.

How do you feel when you have to make a speech in front of the class? How do you feel when you go to a birthday party? Do you get really shy? It’s said that about eighty percent of the middle school students feel afraid to be the center of attention (关注). Some kids are born shy. Some become shy later because of their life experiences (生活经历).
It’s ok if you need some time to feel yourself again when you go to a new place or meet new people. In fact, everybody sometimes gets a little shy. Most people have red faces and talk in broken sentences when they get shy. But some are too shy. They won’t go to a restaurant because they are too nervous to order. Some are afraid to meet new people, so they don’t like to go outside. This kind of shyness can be bad for a person.
If shyness doesn’t stop you from doing anything you want to do, being shy isn’t a very big problem. Shy people are even cleverer because they think more and talk less. They are also good at working with others because they think more for other people. Some great people in history were shy, too.
You see, being shy isn’t all bad. But remember not to get good chances lost. If you have to sing a song at a birthday party or practice your spoken English in front of others, just do it! There’s nothing to be afraid of.

Our earth has two very cold areas at its ends: the Arctic and the Antarctic (北极地区和南极地区). The Arctic is the area around the North Pole, while the Antarctic is the area around the South Pole. They have a lot in common, but they are also different in many ways.
The two places are very cold and covered with ice. Much of the ice there never melts (融化). Heavy snowstorms are common in both places.
One big difference is what is under the ice. Water is under most of the ice in the Arctic. However, land is under most of the ice in the Antarctic. Antarctica is a large continent (大陆). It has mountains, valleys and plains (山谷和平原). They are covered with ice.
The Arctic is warmer than the Antarctic. Plants grow in the Arctic in summer. The Antarctic has almost no plants because it is too cold. Only a few small plants grow there each summer.
Animals live in both places. Polar bears, for example, live in the Arctic. So do some foxes and wolves. Most animals cannot live in Antarctica because it is too cold. However, penguins can live there. Some animals, such as whales, can live in both places.
Many people live in the Arctic. There are towns and small cities in the land areas. However, the Antarctic is so cold that nobody can live there for long. Scientists who study the continent only stay there while they are working. They live in special buildings and don’t spend much time outside.
