My fear of heights made me stand still, but my parents insisted it would “build character.” On the first morning, our instructor, Sarah, gathered us at the base. “This climb isn’t about speed or strength,” she said. “It’s about listening — to your body, the mountain, and your teammates.” I rolled my eyes, believing that reaching the top was the only measure of success. My teammate Jake, a confident athlete, dashed ahead, laughing at my careful and slow pace. “You’re wasting time!” he yelled. By midday, however, his confidence broke. Jake slipped on a narrow ledge (岩架), shaking from thirst and muscle pain. Meanwhile, I adjusted my equipment, sipped water every 15 minutes, and studied the rock formations (构造). When storm clouds darkened the sky, fear struck me. Sarah’s voice echoed in my mind: “Control what you can. Let go of what you can’t.” The final stretch tested everyone. Jake fell behind, humbled and silent. I focused on three steps: plant, pull, and breathe. At the top, wind hit my face as I gazed at the valley (峡谷)below. Jake walked close to me, voice shaky. “I wanted to prove I was the best,” he admitted. “But I forgot to respect the mountain.” That moment reshaped my understanding of growth — it wasn’t about reaching the top but about being humble and patient. Years later, as a guide, I teach philosophy (哲学) at a high school. One student recently asked, “What if I fail?” I smiled. “Failure isn’t falling, it’s refusing to learn why you fell.” Mountains mirror life’s struggles: unpredictable, demanding, yet transformative Every struggle and setback makes us stronger. The real top isn’t a place — it’s the wisdom we carry back to the world below. 4. What initial attitude did the author have toward the instructor’s advice? A. Joyful. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Confused. 5. Why did Jake fail to climb the mountain? A. He wanted the author to win. B. He didn’t have the right equipment. C. He rushed without preparation. D. He had to help other climbers. 6. Which of the following words best describes the author? A. Patient. B. Eager and ambitious. C. Competitive. D. Cold-hearted. 7. What lesson does the author learn from this climbing? A. Winning means fighting hard. B. Strength helps you win. C. Teamwork is more important than personal goals. D Success comes from long-term effort and learning. C Honey is a sweet treat that most people take for granted. But it is more than just a topping for cakes or a sweetener for tea. It’s a miracle (奇迹) of sorts. Honey is the only food product made by an insect that humans eat. Even with all our technical abilities, no one has figured out how to make artificial (人工的) honey. There’s really no replacement. Honey has been used throughout history in a number of ways. One of the most remarkable things about it is that it never goes bad. It may crystallize, meaning that it becomes solid in parts, but simply warming it slightly will melt the crystals and return the honey to its liquid form. No one knows exactly how long honey has been used by humans, but Spanish cave paintings dated at 7,000BC show early evidence of beekeeping. Honey was also used by the ancient Egyptians as a sweetener, as a gift to the gods, and even as an element used to create mummies (木乃伊). Honey has been found inside the Egyptian pyramids, and although that honey was more than 3,000 years old, it would still taste like honey and be safe to eat. No other food has such lasting power Besides its many uses as a sweetener, honey has long been used as a medicinal treatment. Because it’s difficult for any kind of bacteria (细菌) to survive in honey, it makes a perfect barrier on cuts and can prevent infection (感染). Honey is also an effective remedy to relieve a painful throat. It has even been found to be as effective in easing coughs in children. The next time a bee flies through your garden or you spread some honey on a piece of toast, think about the miracle of honey. 8. According to the passage, what makes honey unique among the foods that humans eat? A. Its various shades. B. Its natural creation. C. Its delightful sweetness. D. Its remarkable history. 9. Why does the author mention the honey in the Egyptian pyramids? A. To illustrate that it never goes bad. B. To show the cleverness of Egyptians. C. To compare it with the honey in Spain. D. To inform that it originates from Egypt. 10. What is one of the medicinal uses of honey? A. Promoting bacterial growth. B. Curing throat pain. C. Preventing infection in wounds. D. Beating common colds. 11. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Honey: a Sweet Miracle of Nature B. Honey: a Timeless Treasure C. Honey: a Natural Medicinal Remedy D. Honey: a Common Sweetener D The standard public health threats are all-too familiar: Smoking. High blood pressure. Cancer. But a new government advisory made headlines in 2023 by adding an unexpected major player. Loneliness, stated the report from Vivek Murthy, is a widely underrecognized U.S. health crisis. Lonely people, as Murthy’s report warns, run the same death-rate risk as people who smoke 15 cigarettes a day. Maybe it’s hard to understand how a lack of companionship could be as threatening as an addiction. But humans are so biologically related to be social that isolation (孤独) causes surprising harm on our systems. People who lack social support have a 29 percent higher risk of heart disease, a 32 percent higher risk of stroke, and a 26 to 29 percent higher risk of premature death, according to the report. Scientists now know that loneliness can cause many health problems. That may be because ancestral humans thrived in supportive communities—and anything less can set off a biochemical stress response. “Our brains function more efficiently when we are with others,” says Julianne. Holt-Lunstad, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Brigham Young University. In multiple studies, the stress of aloneness has been linked to higher levels of inflammation (发炎) in the body. When this inflammation persists, the resulting cellular damage can lead to illnesses like Alzheimer’s. Since loneliness is considered as a personal failure, it’s easy to assume people should just try to handle it on their own. But in reality, many of the factors that promote social isolation are structural ones. “It could be workplace policies that don’t allow flexibility to develop personal relationships,” Holt-Lunstad says. “It might be busy or unsafe streets that are barriers to getting to know your neighbors.” The solutions Murthy and Holt-Lunstad propose aren’t all individual lifestyle changes. “We recommend investing in social public facilities to help build connections in communities,”Holt-Lunstad says. That could mean increasing support for civil centre like volunteer programs, redesigning public spaces to encourage gatherings, or changing digital spaces in ways that promote bonding. 12. Why does Murthy mention people who smoke heavily in the report? A. To introduce a health crisis. B. To show the harm of loneliness. C. To reveal high death-rate of cancer. D. To discuss the difficulty of giving up smoking. 13. How does the author support the findings in paragraph 2? A. By listing health threats. B. By making comparisons. C. By providing statistics. D. By analyzing biological features. 14. What does the underlined word “thrived” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. participated voluntarily B. lived healthily C. remained stable D. got desperate 15. Which measure might Holt-Lunstad approve of as a solution? A. Setting up chat benches in parks. B. Removing road barriers in busy streets. C. Collecting users’ preference in digital spaces. D. Investing in more public fire-fighting equipment. How to get out of bad habits Most of us have one or a few bad habits that we’d like to get out of. ____16____ I have a few suggestions that have helped me and people around me. I was rushing from the seafood market, and my clothes were dirty because of fish and other sea food. Even though I took a taxi, I still arrived late. I was laughed at by some parents and kids for my poor look. I met some uncomfortable looks, and with a sense of sadness and pity, I walked to his seat. My son, on the other hand, cleaned the sweat (汗水) from my forehead and handed me his little water bottle, saying, “Mummy, have some water!” In a flash, his thoughtfulness impressed so many people. After the parent-teacher meeting, my son’s teacher asked me to stay back a while longer, but he explained why I had to leave early. “My mother has to go home to cook for my grandparents, so can she leave first? I’ll tell her everything you have to say when I come home, and I promise I won’t miss a word!” The teacher said, “There are more than 40 children in the class, and your son Han Liu is heartbreaking to me; he is so understanding and helpful. Can a child like this not be successful in the future? You must be a great example in your family.” I shook the teacher’s hand and held it as I explained. “Han Liu’s father was hit in a car accident, and both of his grandparents are on the bed all year round, so I can’t take care of Han Liu at all. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者15岁时,父母坚持让其参加登山营。起初作者对教练“倾听身体、山和队友”的建议持怀疑态度。队友Jake急于求成,最终失败。作者最终意识到成功来自谦逊、耐心和不断学习,失败亦是成长的契机。 【4题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第一段中的“I rolled my eyes, believing that reaching the top was the only measure of success.(我翻了个白眼,认为到达顶峰是成功的唯一标准。)”可知,作者最初对教练“倾听身体、山和队友”的建议持怀疑态度,认为只有到达山顶才是成功的唯一标准。因此,选项B“Doubtful(怀疑的)”正确。故选B。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第二段中的“My teammate Jake, a confident athlete, dashed ahead, laughing at my careful and slow pace.(我的队友Jake,一个自信的运动员,冲在前面,嘲笑我小心翼翼、缓慢的步伐。)”和“By midday, however, his confidence broke. Jake slipped on a narrow ledge, shaking from thirst and muscle pain.(然而,到了中午,他的信心就破灭了。Jake在一个狭窄的岩架上滑倒了,由于口渴和肌肉疼痛而颤抖。)”可知,Jake之所以没能爬上山,是因为他没有准备就冲上去了,过于急躁和自信。因此,选项C“He rushed without preparation(他没有准备就冲上去了)”符合题意。故选C。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第三段中的“I focused on three steps: plant, pull, and breathe.(我专注于三个步骤:站稳、拉起和呼吸。)”和最后一段中的“Mountains mirror life’s struggles: unpredictable, demanding, yet transformative. Every struggle and setback makes us stronger.(山反映了生活的挣扎:不可预测、要求高,但也能使人改变。每一次挣扎和挫折都使我们更强大。)”可知,作者在登山过程中表现出了耐心和谦逊,面对困难和挑战时能够保持冷静和专注。因此,选项A“Patient(有耐心的)”最能描述作者。故选A。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第三段中的“That moment reshaped my understanding of growth — it wasn’t about reaching the top but about being humble and patient.(那一刻重塑了我对成长的理解——它不是关于到达顶峰,而是关于谦逊和耐心。)”和最后一段中的“The real top isn’t a place — it’s the wisdom we carry back to the world below.(真正的山顶不是一个地方,而是我们带回下面世界的智慧。)”可知,作者从这次攀登中学到了成功来自长期的努力和学习,而不是仅仅追求到达顶峰。因此,选项D“Success comes from long-term effort and learning(成功来自长期的努力和学习)”正确。故选D。 C Honey is a sweet treat that most people take for granted. A To illustrate that it never goes bad. B. To show the cleverness of Egyptians. C. To compare it with the honey in Spain. D. To inform that it originates from Egypt. 10. What is one of the medicinal uses of honey? A. Promoting bacterial growth. B. Curing throat pain. C. Preventing infection in wounds. D Beating common colds. 11. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Honey: a Sweet Miracle of Nature B. Honey: a Timeless Treasure C. Honey: a Natural Medicinal Remedy D. Honey: a Common Sweetener 【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍蜂蜜不仅是人类食用的独特昆虫产物,还具有永不变质、历史悠久及药用价值等特性,堪称自然奇迹。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Honey is the only food product made by an insect that humans eat. Even with all our technical abilities, no one has figured out how to make artificial (人工的) honey. There’s really no replacement.(蜂蜜是人类食用的唯一由昆虫制造的食品。即便拥有如今的技术能力,也没人能研制出人工蜂蜜,它确实无可替代。)”可知,蜂蜜的独特之处在于它是由昆虫自然产生的食品,无法人工复制。故选B项。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“One of the most remarkable things about it is that it never goes bad.(蜂蜜最显著的特点之一就是永不变质。)”及第四段“Honey has been found inside the Egyptian pyramids, and although that honey was more than 3,000 years old, it would still taste like honey and be safe to eat.(在埃及金字塔内发现的蜂蜜,尽管已存放超过3000年,尝起来仍保持蜂蜜的风味且可安全食用。)”可知,作者提及金字塔中的蜂蜜,是为了举例说明蜂蜜“永不变质”的特性。故选A项。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段中的“Because it’s difficult for any kind of bacteria (细菌) to survive in honey, it makes a perfect barrier on cuts and can prevent infection (感染).(由于任何细菌都难以在蜂蜜中存活,它能在伤口处形成良好的保护屏障,防止感染。)”可知,蜂蜜的药用价值之一是预防伤口感染。故选C项。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Honey is a sweet treat that most people take for granted. But it is more than just a topping for cakes or a sweetener for tea. It’s a miracle (奇迹) of sorts.(蜂蜜是大多数人习以为常的甜味美食,但它不只是蛋糕的配料或茶的甜味剂,从某种程度上来说,它堪称一种奇迹。)”以及下文可知,短文围绕蜂蜜的独特性(昆虫自然产物)、永不变质、历史用途及药用价值展开,核心是凸显蜂蜜作为“自然甜蜜奇迹”的特质。A项“蜂蜜:自然的甜蜜奇迹”为最佳标题。故选A项。 D The standard public health threats are all-too familiar: Smoking. 【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍孤单是影响人们健康的主要因素,分析其产生的原因并提出解决措施。 【12题详解】 推断判断题。根据第二段中“Lonely people, as Murthy’s report warns, run the same death-rate risk as people who smoke 15 cigarettes a day. (正如穆尔蒂的报告所警告的,孤独的人与每天吸15支烟的人有着相同的死亡风险) ”可知,文章中用吸烟的人来类比说明孤单造成的危害。故选B。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“People who lack social support have a 29 percent higher risk of heart disease, a 32 percent higher risk of stroke, and a 26 to 29 percent higher risk of premature death, according to the report.(根据报告,缺乏社交支持的人患心脏病的风险高出29%,患中风的风险高出32%,早逝的风险高出26%到29%)”可知,第二段提供了很多数据说明孤单会增加患病的风险,对人们的身体健康造成影响。故选C。 【14题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段“Scientists now know that loneliness can cause many health problems. That may be because ancestral humans thrived in supportive communities — and anything less can set off a biochemical stress response. “Our brains function more efficiently when we are with others,” says Julianne. 根据最后一段中“We recommend investing in social public facilities to help build connections in communities,” Holt-Lunstad says. That could mean increasing support for civil centre like volunteer programs, redesigning public spaces to encourage gatherings, or changing digital spaces in ways that promote bonding.(霍尔特—伦斯塔德说:“我们建议投资社会公共设施,以帮助在社区中建立联系。”这可能意味着增加对诸如志愿者项目等公民中心的支持,重新设计公共空间以鼓励聚会,或者以促进联系的方式改变数字空间)”可知,霍尔特—伦斯塔德提出的解决方案之一是投资于促进社区联系的社会公共设施。设置聊天长椅 (chat benches) 这样的措施能够鼓励人们之间的交流和互动,符合所提倡的建立社区连接的理念。故选A。 How to get out of bad habits Most of us have one or a few bad habits that we’d like to get out of. ____16____ I have a few suggestions that have helped me and people around me. Here are some tips that can help you finally get out of that bad habit. ____17____ If you tell people around you that you will stop smoking or start to exercise three times a week, then they will check up on you. And you will feel you have to keep your promise because it is let out into the world. Avoid temptations (诱惑). ____18____ Places where you are likely to spend too much money. Things in your cupboard that will not help you to get healthier and you should not have at home at all. And people that drag (拉) you down and back into your old ways. ____19____ It may seem like a good idea to change your life all at once. In our daily life, stress and lack (缺乏) of energy usually lead to failure. Don’t try to be Superman or Wonder Woman. Take it easy and break one habit at a time. ____20____ You will probably not succeed the first time you do it. You fail and you make mistakes when you make changes and try new things. That’s just life and nothing to feel bad about. What you should do next is try again. A. Tell your friends and family. B. Know what usually gets you into bad habits. C. See your future in your mind. D. The reason why we need to make good habits. E But how do you do it? F. Don’t break more than one habit at a time. G. If at first you don’t succeed, please try again. E 17. A 18. B 19. F 20. 【16题详解】 上文“Most of us have one or a few bad habits that we’d like to get out of. (我们多数人或多或少都会有些想要摆脱的坏习惯。)”引入了文章的话题,摆脱坏习惯,E项“但是你该怎么做呢”进行设问,下文“I have a few suggestions that have helped me and people around me.(我有一些建议,这些建议曾帮助过我和我周围的人。)” 【17题详解】 下文“If you tell people around you that you will stop smoking or start to exercise three times a week, then they will check up on you. And you will feel you have to keep your promise because it is let out into the world.(如果你告诉身边的人,你想要戒烟或是一周锻炼三次,那么他们就会帮助监督你。你就会觉得你必须遵守诺言,因为你已经把它昭告天下了。)”讲的是可以通过告诉身边的人自己要戒掉某个坏习惯来摆脱,因为他们会监督你,从而让你想要为自己说过的话负责,去戒掉你的坏习惯。则设空处的内容对应的是戒掉坏习惯的第一条建议:A项“告诉你的朋友或家人”。其中下文的“tell people around you”与A项的“Tell your friends and family”对应。故选A项。 是戒掉坏习惯的第二条建议,B项“了解是什么让你形成了坏习惯”提出避开诱惑的做法是,了解你会受什么诱惑形成坏习惯,其中B项的“what”对应上文的“temptations”,下文“Places where you are likely to spend too much money. Things in your cupboard that will not help you to get healthier and you should not have at home at all. And people that drag (拉) you down and back into your old ways. (比如,一些你可能会大花一笔的地方;橱柜里的东西,那种不利于健康、完全不应放家里的东西;或者是那些把你拖下水、让你变回老样子的人。)”则举出了可能让你形成坏习惯的诱惑的例子。所以B项符合题意。故选B项。 【19题详解】 下文“It may seem like a good idea to change your life all at once. In our daily life, stress and lack (缺乏) of energy usually lead to failure. Don’t try to be Superman or Wonder Woman. Take it easy and break one habit at a time.(一下子改变你的生活似乎是个好主意。在我们的日常生活中,压力和缺乏能量通常会导致失败。不要试图成为超人或神奇女侠。放轻松,一次改掉一个习惯。)”讲的是我们很难一下子摆脱所有的坏习惯,应该按部就班,一次只摆脱一个习惯。由此可知,设空处对应的第三条戒掉坏习惯的建议是F项“不要想着一次戒掉一个以上的坏习惯”。其中下文的“It”指代F项的“break more than one habit at a time”。故选F项。 【20题详解】 下文“You will probably not succeed the first time you do it. You fail and you make mistakes when you make changes and try new things. That’s just life and nothing to feel bad about. What you should do next is try again.(你很可能第一次并不会成功戒掉。 I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver. Since he could walk, he has been caring for his grandpa, grandma and father.” The teacher was so amazed. On the way home, I couldn’t stop crying thinking of all the little moments of my son’s life. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I was waiting downstairs for my son to come home from school with a clean look. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文 On the way home, I couldn’t stop crying thinking of all the little moments of my son’s life.
