When I was young I wanted to be a model, so when a national contest was staged, I convinced my parents to take me for an audition (试演). I was selected and told I had potential. They said that for only $900 I could attend a weekend event which dozens of the most prestigious (有声望的) modeling agencies from around the world would attend. At 13, my hopes of fame and fortune clouded all judgment and I begged my parents to let me go. We have never been rich, but they saw my enthusiasm and agreed.
I imagined being signed by some famous model companies. For months, any boredom or disappointment was pushed aside because I knew I would soon have the chance to be a real model. I thought I would grace the covers of famous magazines!
Of course, I wasn’t signed, but what hurt me most was being told that if I grew to 5’9” (about 1.75 metres) I could be a success. I prayed for a growth spurt (冲刺) because I could not imagine giving up my dream. I made an appointment with a local modeling agency and the agent demanded $ 500 for classes, $500 for a photo shoot, and $ 300 for other expenses. My parents only agreed after hours and hours of me begging.
The agency sent me out on a few auditions, but with every day I didn’t receive a call I grew more depressed. The final straw came in July after I had decided to focus on commercial (广告) modeling. There was an open call in New York City. We spent hours driving and another few hours waiting, only to be told that I was too short I was devastated
Years later Ire zed that the trip to New York was good as it made me notice I didn’t actually love modeling, just the idea of it. I wanted to be special and I was innocently determined to reach an impossible goal. The experience has made me stronger and that will help me in the future.
41. What’s the main reason why the author wanted to be a model?

42. What’s the author’s parents’ attitude toward her dream?
A. Encouraging. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Enthusiastic.
43. What was that made the author end her attempt to become a model?
A. Her parents were strongly against it.
B. She realized that it was impossible for her.
C. Even a local modeling agency turned her down.
D. She realized that she didn’t actually love the idea of modeling.
44. The underlined phrase “The final straw” probably means
A. the last in a series of bad things that happen to make someone very upset angry, etc
B. the final result that she was admitted by the model company
C. the final audition given by the agency
D. the decision that she made at last not to be a model anymore
45. What did the author learn from her experience of struggling to be a model?
A. Where there’s a will there’s away.
B. Being a model is not that easy.
C. We should have our own judgment and should not just follow others.
D. We might set unpractical goals but the experiences can help us grow.
C
You have probably read about robots replacing human labor as a new era of automation takes root in one industry after another. But a report suggests humans are not the only ones who might lose their jobs.
In New Zealand, farmers are using drones (无人机) to herd and monitor livestock, taking up a position that highly intelligent dogs have held for more than a century. The robots have not replaced the dogs entirely, Radio New Zealand reports, but they have appropriated (盗用) one of the animal’s most potent tools : barking.
The DJ-Innovations (DJI) Mavic Enterprise, a $3,500 drone favored by farmers, has a feature that lets the machine record sounds and play them over a loudspeaker, giving the machine the ability to act as the dogs. Corey Lambeth, a shepherd at a farm with sheep and cows, told RNZ the machines are surprisingly effective. “That’s the one thing I’ve noticed when you’re moving cows and calves—that the old cows stand up to the dogs, but with the drones, they’ve never done that,” he said, noting that it means the drones move livestock faster, with less stress, than the dogs do.
Farmers told RNZ the drones come in handy for more than just herding cows and sheep. The robots allow farmers to monitor their land from afar, tracking water and feed levels and checking on livestock health without disturbing the animals.
Jason Rentoul told RNZ last spring that a two-hour herding job that used to require two people and two teams of dogs could be accomplished in 45 minutes using a single drone. “Being a hilly farm where a lot of stuff is done on foot, the drones really saved a lot of man-hours,” he said. “The drone does the higher bits that you can’t see from the ground, and you would have to walk half an hour to go and have a look and then go, ‘Oh, there was no sheep there.’”
Farmers around the world are using drones. In South Africa, they monitor crop health from above, which boosts harvests, according to CN. In California, winemakers use drones equipped with sensors to grow healthier grapes, according to MIT Technology Review. Because drones fly closer to the ground, they are able to provide high-resolution images that are less expensive than hiring someone to fly an aircraft over a field, the publication reported.
In New Zealand, farmers say some dogs are learning to work alongside drones, identifying the machines as more co-worker than foe. “A good herding dog, he’s already figured out if the drones are working on that side. I’ll go over here (to the other side) and work over here,” Rentoul said. “For now,” farmers say, “there is still a need for herding dogs, primarily because they have a longer life span than drones, can work in bad weather and do not require an electrical socket every few hours to recharge”.
“There’s definitely going to be places for dogs always on farm,” Lambeth said. “The one down side of the Mavic drones or anything electronic is that you still need to bring them in and charge them.”
46. According to the passage, the drones can’ t replace the dogs entirely because ________.
A. the drones can’t bark as loudly as the dogs do.
B. the drones’ power and working conditions are limited.
C. the drones are much more expensive than the animal.
D. cows and calves are not used to seeing the drones.
47. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Herding dogs will gradually lose their position on the farmland.
B. The drones can only copy the dogs’ barking with the current technology.
C. The drones are multifunctional and leave the animals undisturbed.
D. The cost of using drones to monitor grapes is half the cost of hiring someone.
48. What are the main disadvantages of the drones?
A. Short service time and simple function.
B. Continuous maintenance and system upgrades.
C. Vulnerability to fierce animals and extreme weather.
D. Frequent absence and restricted battery capacity.
49. Why do farmers around the world like using drones?
A. Because drones have no motors.
B. Because using drones hardly meet the demand of management.
C. Because using drones can not only bring about too much convenience ,but also reduce the cost.
D. Because it is out of the question for using drones to provide high-resolution images.
50. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Robots are replacing human labor
B. Drones help keep livestock in line
C Herding dogs will remain on farm
D. Farming is becoming surprisingly effective.
D
Machines work well at a constant speed—and the faster the better. They are designed and built for it. Whether they are spinning cotton or dealing with numbers regular, repetitive actions are what they excel at.
Increasingly, our world is being designed by machines, for machines. We adapt to machines and hold ourselves to their standards: People are judged by the speed with which they respond, not the quality of their response. Such ideas are being woven into our culture. “Always on” becomes something to boast of, or aspire to.
Most of us are busy most of the time, if not with work then with family, domestic tasks or our social networks—real and virtual. When I ask people how they are doing, they almost always answer “busy”. Ticking things off the “to do” list becomes a means of defining ourselves.
A few years ago, I became very interested in what it means to pause. I started to notice where pauses show up in my own work and life. For example, I realized that when I was writing, a short walk was a more effective way to break a creative block than concentrating harder.
I realized that a pause is not nothing. It acts as a kind of switch or opening. As Helene Simonsen, a classical musician, says, “Whatever you are doing, if you want something else to happen, you need to pause.” It is not a fixed unit of time. It might be taking a moment before you enter a room, but it could also be a “screen-free Saturday”, a “Think Week” every two years (which works for Bill Gates) or a year-long vacation. However fast you are moving, there is always the chance to pause—to rest, reflect or refresh of course, but also to appreciate, get perspective, connect to others, or have new ideas.
There is more to life than getting things done. Time, as we experience it, varies wildly. A minute eating ice-cream is not the same as a minute doing push-ups. Even time itself isn’t a uniform raw material—as the physics of Einstein shows. Try to let go of the idea that time is linear (直线型), regular and objective, and think of it in the same way we experience it. Instead of setting work and life against each other, use pauses to leaven (为增色) your experience. Pause is like yeast (酵母): you don’t need much, but it is a vital ingredient.
I want to give pauses more visibility, importance and status. My hope is that each of us can use pauses, great and small, to avoid sliding into a mode where we act like poorly performing machines.
51. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. The widespread use of machines has destroyed our life.
B. People have become quite obsessed with response speed.
C. People always get pleasure from competing with machines.
D. It’s difficult for people to adapt to a highly mechanized life.
52. The underlined phrase “Ticking things off the ‘to do’ list” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. learning to slow down
B. concentrating on one thing
C. selecting what we should do
D. getting things done one by one
53. According to the author, how does taking a pause benefit us in a busy life?
A. It makes your life dynamic and delightful.
B. It improves our working efficiency greatly.
C. It helps develop interpersonal connections.
D. It enables people to do what they want to do.
54. Which of the following statements best sums up the author’s understanding of time?
A. Time can never get returned.
B. Time exists in the form of lines.
C. Time is precious that we all need to cherish.
D. Time is what everyone experiences uniquely.
55. What message does the author want to convey about “pauses” at the end of the passage?
A They are useless if taken for short periods of time.
B. They are for those who have too much spare time.
C. They play a vital role in our well-being and creativity.
D. They bring harm to our ability to perform efficiently.

Many people, some even at a very young age, set the goal of graduating from college. One American woman in Texas waited a long time for her chance to reach that goal.
The woman is 84-year-old Janet Fein. Last week, she received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Dallas.
Fein has had a full life. She has raised five children and then had a career as a secretary until she retired at age 77. But even then, she was not ready to take it easy and rest during a well-earned retirement.
“I didn’t have anything to do in retirement and I didn’t think that playing bingo was up to my speed, ”Fein said. She said she decided to major in sociology.
Fein spent her childhood in the Bronx, New York City, where her family lived in poverty. After graduating early from high school, she started working as a secretary at a dress manufacturer at the age of 16. Following her marriage, she spent 18 years raising her children at home. Throughout her life, Fein held various jobs, including 20 years as a secretary in a Dallas hospital, which she retired from in 2012. She also devoted 20 years to earning an associate degree, which she received in 1995.
Fein, despite her life experiences, had a strong desire to earn a bachelor’s degree. She found joy in reading, writing papers, and learning new things. Taking advantage of a state program, she joined around 2, 000 others aged 65 and older in Texas who attend public university classes for free. Although less than 1% of U. S. college students are in this age group, health experts believe continuing education later in life can help maintain fitness. Despite worsening health conditions, Fein persevered, using a walker and oxygen, and even completing the remaining degree requirements through online classes.
Her college advisor was Sheila Rollerson. She said that Fein never showed signs of giving up even with all of her difficulties. “She was plugging away at her studies and in return she received her bachelor’s degree and respect, ” Rollerson said.
Renee Brown, one of Fein’s caregivers, found inspiration from her. At 53, Brown plans to begin nursing school, encouraged by Fein’s words of confidence and the fulfillment that comes with achievement.

44. The underlined phrase “The final straw” probably means
A. the last in a series of bad things that happen to make someone very upset angry, etc

根据最后一段“Years later Ire zed that the trip to New York was good as it made me notice I didn’t actually love modeling, just the idea of it. I wanted to be special and I was innocently determined to reach an impossible goal. The experience has made me stronger and that will help me in the future.(几年后,我意识到纽约之行很好,因为它让我注意到我其实并不喜欢模特,只是喜欢它的想法。我想变得特别,我天真地决心实现一个不可能实现的目标。这段经历让我变得更加坚强,这将在未来对我有所帮助)”可知,作者从她努力成为一名模特的经历中学到了有时候人们会设立不切实际的目标,但是经历能够帮助他们成长。故选D。

C. Herding dogs will remain on farm
D. Farming is becoming surprisingly effective.

根据倒数第二段最后一句“there is still a need for herding dogs, primarily because they have a longer life span than drones, can work in bad weather and do not require an electrical socket every few hours to recharge”(人们仍然需要牧羊犬,主要是因为它们的寿命比无人机长,可以在恶劣天气下工作,而且不需要每隔几个小时就用电源插座充电。)
根据文章第三段后两句“Corey Lambeth, a shepherd at a farm with sheep and cows, told RNZ the machines are surprisingly effective. “That’s the one thing I’ve noticed when you’re moving cows and calves—that the old cows stand up to the dogs, but with the drones, they’ve never done that,” he said, noting that it means the drones move livestock faster, with less stress, than the dogs do.”(科里·兰伯斯是一家牧场的牧羊人,他在接受新西兰广播公司采访时表示,这些机器的效果令人惊讶。 及第四段第二句“The robots allow farmers to monitor their land from afar, tracking water and feed levels and checking on livestock health without disturbing the animals.”(这些机器人可以让农民从远处监控他们的土地,跟踪水和饲料水平,并在不打扰动物的情况下检查牲畜的健康状况。)
根据最后一段““There’s definitely going to be places for dogs always on farm,” Lambeth said. “The one down side of the Mavic drones or anything electronic is that you still need to bring them in and charge them.””(兰贝斯说:“农场里肯定会有狗的地方。”“Mavic无人机或任何电子产品的一个缺点是,你仍然需要把它们带来并给它们充电。”)可知,无人机不能长时间待在需要看管牛羊的地方,必须经常取回充电。也就是说,无人机由于电池容量有限,经常要离开看管牛羊的地方,取回充电一段时间。故选D项。

推理判断题。根据第六段“Farmers around the world are using drones. In South Africa, they monitor crop health from above, which boosts harvests, according to CN. In California, winemakers use drones equipped with sensors to grow healthier grapes, according to MIT Technology Review. Because drones fly closer to the ground, they are able to provide high-resolution images that are less expensive than hiring someone to fly an aircraft over a field, the publication reported.”(世界各地的农民都在使用无人机。
根据第二段“In New Zealand, farmers are using drones to herd and monitor livestock, taking up a position that highly intelligent dogs have held for more than a century. The robots have not replaced the dogs entirely, Radio New Zealand reports, but they have appropriated one of the animal’s most potent tools : barking.”(在新西兰,农民们正在使用无人机放牧和监控牲畜,取代了一个多世纪以来一直由高智能狗占据的位置。

Machines work well at a constant speed—and the faster the better. They are designed and built for it. Whether they are spinning cotton or dealing with numbers, regular, repetitive actions are what they excel at.
A. They are useless if taken for short periods of time.
B. They are for those who have too much spare time.
C. They play a vital role in our well-being and creativity.
D. They bring harm to our ability to perform efficiently.
B 52. D 53. A 54. D 55. C

根据首段中的“Machines work well at a constant speed—and the faster the better.(机器以恒定的速度运转良好——而且越快越好)”以及第二段中的“We adapt to machines and hold ourselves to their standards: People are judged by the speed with which they respond, not the quality of their response.(我们适应机器,按照机器的标准来要求自己:人们的评判标准是反应的速度,而不是反应的质量。)”
根据第三段中的“Most of us are busy most of the time, if not with work then with family, domestic tasks or our social networks—real and virtual. When I ask people how they are doing, they almost always answer “busy”.(我们大多数人大部分时间都很忙,如果不是忙于工作,那么就是忙于家庭、家务或我们的社交网络——不管是真实的还是虚拟的。当我问人们近况如何时,他们几乎总是回答“很忙”。)”可知,大多数人大部分时间都是很忙,忙工作、忙家务,各种忙,由此可知,本段讲述的内容与“忙”相关,所以划线短语所在的句子所描述的内容应与本段主题“忙”相关,结合选项,“一个接一个地做事情”与本段的主题吻合。故选D项。
【53题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段中的“However fast you are moving, there is always the chance to pause—to rest, reflect or refresh of course, but also to appreciate, get perspective, connect to others, or have new ideas.(无论你走得有多快,总有机会停下来休息、反思或刷新,但也要欣赏、获得视角、与他人联系或有新的想法。)” 故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中的“Time, as we experience it, varies wildly. A minute eating ice-cream is not the same as a minute doing push-ups. Even time itself isn’t a uniform raw material—as the physics of Einstein shows. Try to let go of the idea that time is linear (直线型), regular and objective, and think of it in the same way we experience it.(我们所经历的时间变化很大。
根据最后一段中的“I want to give pauses more visibility, importance and status. My hope is that each of us can use pauses, great and small, to avoid sliding into a mode where we act like poorly performing machines.(我想赋予停顿更多的可见度、重要性和地位。我的希望是,我们每个人都能利用或大或小的停顿,避免陷入一种像表现不佳的机器一样的模式。)”可知,作者希望人们不会像机器一样,做着有规律地重复动作,我们应该利用好大大小小的暂停,结合倒数第二段中的“Instead of setting work and life against each other, use pauses to leaven (为增色) your experience. Pause is like yeast (酵母): you don’t need much, but it is a vital ingredient.(不要把工作和生活对立起来,要利用停顿来丰富你的经历。暂停就像酵母:你不需要太多,但它是至关重要的成分。)”可知,我们不是把工作与生活对立起来,而是使用暂停让生活充满色彩,暂停像酵母一样,不需要很多,但是很重要,由此可推断,暂停在对我们的幸福和创造力起着至关重要的作用。故选C项。

五、阅读表达(共5题,每题2分,共10分)
阅读短文, 按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
56. Why did Fein want to study after retiring? (no more than 15 words)
_____________________________________________________________________________
57. What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about? (no more than 5 words)
______________________________________________________________________________
58. Why did Fein take online classes to finish the last part of her degree requirements? (no more than 5 words)

She said she decided to major in sociology.(费恩说:“我退休后没什么事可做,我觉得玩宾果游戏跟不上我的速度。” Fein wanted intellectual engagement and to achieve her long-standing goal of earning a bachelor’s degree./ Fein wanted to keep her mind active/have a fuller life and achieve her dream of getting her degree.
根据第五段“Fein spent her childhood in the Bronx, New York City, where her family lived in poverty. She also devoted 20 years to earning an associate degree, which she received in 1995.(费恩的童年是在纽约市布朗克斯度过的,她的家庭生活贫困。高中提前毕业后,她在16岁时开始在一家服装制造商担任秘书。婚后,她花了18年的时间在家抚养孩子。在她的一生中,费恩做过各种各样的工作,包括在达拉斯一家医院做了20年的秘书,她于2012年退休。她还花了20年时间获得了副学士学位,并于1995年获得了学位)”可知,第5段主要讲了费恩的人生经历。故答案为Fein’s life experience.
根据倒数第三段“Despite worsening health conditions, Fein persevered, using a walker and oxygen, and even completing the remaining degree requirements through online classes.(尽管健康状况不断恶化,费恩还是坚持了下来,使用助行器和氧气,甚至通过在线课程完成了剩余的学位要求)”可知,费恩参加网络课程来完成她学位要求的最后一部分是因为她身体不好。 Because of her bad health.
根据划线词上文“She said that Fein never showed signs of giving up even with all of her difficulties.(她说,费恩即使遇到种种困难,也从未表现出放弃的迹象)”以及后文“in return she received her bachelor’s degree and respect(作为回报,她获得了学士学位和尊重)”可知,费恩遇到困难也没有放弃,继续努力学习,所以她获得了学士学位和尊重。 She kept working hard at her studies.
Fein’s story tells us that we should overcome difficulties and persist in learning, and establish the consciousness of lifelong learning.
