Fourteen-year-old Sirish Subash from Georgia has won the 3M Young Scientist Challenge for inventing an AI-based hand-held pesticide (杀虫剂) detector that is very accurate in detecting pesticide residue (残留). The ninth-grader at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology in Snellville has received the title “America’s Top Young Scientist”, according to a press.
In its 17th year, the challenge supports middle school students to think creatively and apply STEM principles to discover real-world solutions. Sirish spent four months competing against nine other finalists and secured his win at the final challenge events at 3M’s global headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota that were held in October last year. The finalists had to go through a series of interactive challenges and were evaluated on their innovation, application of STEM, as well as their ability to inspire others.
“The Young Scientist Challenge finalists have demonstrated an incredible ability to develop innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges,” said Torie Clarke, EVP and chief public affairs officer at 3M. “I am beyond impressed and inspired by their intelligence and their scientific minds.”
Sirish’s journey to winning the award came from watching his mother washing vegetables and fruits and telling him to always do so. Since 70 percent of produce in the US has pesticide residues that are linked to illnesses like cancer, it’s very important to know if the fruits and vegetables are safe to eat. That’s what PestiSCAND was designed to do.
The device works by shining light on the surface of the produce and measuring the wavelengths that bounce back. PestiSCAND uses a sensor and AI-based processor to achieve an accuracy of over 85 percent. Sirish tested the device on more than 12,000 food samples including strawberries, apples and tomatoes.
Sirish aims to make this technology widely accessible so that consumers will be able to make safe food choices.
4. What can we know about Sirish from paragraph 2?
A. He won the award effortlessly. B. He copied other finalists’ ideas.
C. He centered on challenging others. D. He stood out in certain areas.
5. How did Torie Clarke find the finalists?
A. They were creative. B. They were odd. C. They were patient. D. They were easygoing.
6. Why was PestiSCAND designed?
A. To help wash vegetables and fruits. B. To detect some illnesses.
C. To measure the safety of produce. D. To scare pests away.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Pesticide Detection: Most Scientists’ Dream. B. A 14-year-old Wins Young Scientist Award.
C. 3M Challenge: A Search for Top Innovators. D. An Invention Frees People from Illnesses.

Construction workers recently found the ruins of a large pyramid beside a highway in Mexico. After discovering the site, researchers collected many ancient objects that would be studied in their laboratories over the coming months. The structure was found last year during highway expansion work in Hidalgo, central Mexico. The discovery happened accidentally as workers were adding a third lane to the federal highway, showing how ancient structures can still be found during modern construction projects.
Scientists from Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History went to study the site. They used drones to take pictures and collected 155 items, including pieces of pottery, stone tools and shells. To safeguard the old building, they built a large wall around the pyramid, which is 43 meters long and 11.7 meters high.
The pyramid is part of an old settlement called San Miguel, built between 650-1519 CE. The area was ruled by the “Metzca lordship”, which influenced the region until the 1500s. People lived in this region for a very long time, with the oldest settlements dating back at least 14,000 years. This shows that many different groups of people lived here over thousands of years.
Scientists keep finding ancient buildings in Mexico and other parts of the Americas. Many discoveries are made using LiDAR, a technology that uses laser light to see things hidden under plants and trees. This tool helps archaeologists (考古学家) find old structures that they couldn’t see just by looking at the ground. Last year, researchers used LiDAR to find an 18-kilometer road that connected ancient Maya cities over 1,200 years ago. In Guatemala, they also discovered a previously unknown Maya civilization with 964 settlements connected by 177 kilometers of ancient roads.
These findings show that the Americas had complex and thriving (繁荣的) societies long before European settlers arrived. The discoveries are a solid reminder of how advanced these ancient civilizations were, though their development was later interrupted by colonization (殖民化). Each new discovery helps build a more complete picture of these remarkable ancient societies.
8. How was the pyramid in Hidalgo discovered?
A. By using LiDAR technology. B. During an archaeological research.
C. By chance during a highway construction. D. Through the study of historical documents.
9. What does the discovery of San Miguel site show?
A. The settlement lasted briefly. B. Different cultures ever existed.
C. One group controlled everything. D. Ancient structures were appealing.
10. What can be known about LiDAR technology?
A. It preserves ancient buildings. B. It connects different sites.
C. It is mainly used to find stone tools. D. It helps uncover hidden structures.
11. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. The new discoveries redefine precolonial histories.
B. Colonization promoted the ancient civilization growth.
C Ancient American societies were highly underdeveloped.
D. European settlers paid high attention to ancient civilizations.
D
What’s the secret to a thriving garden? Sunlight and water, of course. And, it turns out that another surprising helper can help grow healthy plants: music! According to a study published in Frontiers in Plant Science, music has the power to help plants grow, and even the type of music can have a different effect on plants.
Plants don’t hear sound like humans do, but they can feel movements from sound and respond positively to certain type of music, according to a study published in Nature. The sound movements from music copy natural stimuli (刺激物) like wind or water. The study showed that plants exposed to music grow faster, with taller stems and healthier leaves. King Charles talks to his plants to foster their growth, reported the Independent.
“Gardening expert” Chris Beardshaw told The Scotsman that he believed playing heavy metal music boosted plant growth, producing shorter plants with larger, more disease resistant flowers. Beardshaw did a greenhouse test comparing music types. He found that classical music slightly helped growth, while rock and roll singer Cliff Richard’s music probably led to plants dying. The loud, rhythmic energy of heavy metal proved most effective for blooms (开花), suggesting an unexpected link between head banging music and plant health.
Overall, findings seem to show that plants do better with more rhythmic types, especially classical and heavy metal. According to the garden company Moana Nursery, classical music seems to work well to keep plant pores (气孔) open longer. Heavy metal appears to help even more growth. You can even find song lists on Spotify made just for your plants!
However, understanding what music plants like best can be hard. It depends on things like plant types, music styles and growing conditions. Some people say more testing needs to be done to prove music helps plants grow. The better plant growth seen in these studies might also come from better plant care. Whether or not plants truly like music, adding songs to your gardening can’t hurt. Play Mozart — or Metallica — and see if your plants grow better!
12. What do we learn from the study in Frontiers in Plant Science?
A. Plants were unable to grow without music.
B. The type of music decides on plant growth.
C. Music has the ability to assist plant growth.
D. Plants can hear sounds exactly like humans.
13. What does the underlined word “foster” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Encourage. B. Weaken. C. Limit. D. Predict.
14. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Reasons for plants’ preference for music.
B. The advantages of playing different music.
C. Ways to help plants grow more naturally.
D. The impact of music types on plant growth.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards playing music for plants?
A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Opposed. D. Unconcerned.

From her childhood, Parker showed great interest in writing. She would spend hours in her room, writing stories in her notebooks. Her mother always encouraged her, often reading her tales with enthusiasm. Parker’s imagination knew no bounds, and she dreamed of one day seeing her work published.
When Parker started middle school, although the schoolwork was heavy, her parents supported her hobby. She joined the school’s writing club. In the club, Parker learned about different writing styles and techniques. She spent her free time writing short stories about magical adventures, everyday heroes and the beauty of nature. Her stories were full of vivid descriptions and unique characters. Each time she finished a piece, she would share it with her parents, who provided some feedback (反馈), and Parker would eagerly revise her work, always struggling to improve.
As Parker entered high school, her passion for writing only grew stronger. She started entering local writing competitions. Her first competition was tense. She spent days perfecting her story. However, Parker didn’t win. “It’s OK, honey. We will always be with you,” her mother comforted her. Parker didn’t give up and she used the experience as a learning opportunity, analyzing the winning entries to understand where she could do better next time.
The biggest challenge came when Parker decided to write a novel. She had this idea about a group of friends on a cross-country adventure, facing various obstacles (阻碍) and learning about friendship and themselves along the way. She spent months writing, rewriting and editing. But as she was about to finish the first draft one evening, her computer crashed, and she lost most of her work. She was filled with great sadness.

All those hours of hard work seemed to be gone. She sat at her desk, tears in her eyes, thinking about giving up. Just then, her mother walked in.

【答案】
Seeing Parker’s tears, her mother hugged her. “I know you feel like all your hard work is gone,” she said softly, “but remember when you failed the first writing competition? You didn’t give up then, and you shouldn’t give up now.” Her mother reminded Parker of how she used to rewrite stories until they were perfect, which made Parker realize she couldn’t let this setback stop her. With her mother’s encouragement, Parker decided to start over and even thought of new ideas. She even sent it to a famous publisher.
Parker received an email from the publisher. She held her breath as she opened it, and tears of joy filled her eyes when she read that they wanted to publish her novel. The publisher said the story about friendship and adventure touched their hearts, which made Parker feel extremely proud. She ran to tell her mother the good news, and they hugged tightly. Parker realized that the reason she succeeded was not just talent, but the love and support from her family, who always stood by her no matter what. She knew that as long as she kept writing, she could achieve anything.
