Twenty years ago, Mike Hill looked around the safari (野生动物观光) industry and noticed that something was missing. “I had worked in safaris all my life,” he told me, “when I suddenly realised that no one was catering for people with physical disabilities.” Beyond a missed opportunity, Mike felt he had a responsibility to change this. For the past two decades, he has been taking wheelchair users out into the wildest places in Southern Africa. What is perhaps surprising is that he had no personal connection to disability when he started. He was unafraid to learn, however, and spent months volunteering at a home for disabled people.
Mike recognised that there are two physical factors that determine whether a disabled traveller can participate in a safari: transport and accommodation. Control those and you level the playing field. The only thing out of control is the wilderness itself, but therein lies the excitement for all travellers, regardless of physical ability. So, Mike first adapted a safari vehicle by fitting a powered lift and wheelchair tie-downs. Then he created a mobile tented camp with roll-in showers, raised beds and paths for smooth wheeling. Pretty soon, he had created the world’s first adapted mobile safari camp.
When I travelled with Endeavour Safaris last year and experienced it for myself, it was extraordinary. The vehicle meant I could access the bush with dignity and independence, and the camp more than met my needs. The rest — be it elephants wandering through or a hippo grumbling (低吼) outside my tent — was just the wild and raw reality of a mobile safari.
“Making safaris accessible to people who never thought they could do it is the highlight for me,” he told me. “But here’s the moral of the story: the world will only change when more disabled people travel. You need pioneers. So my message is simple: travel, travel, travel.”
24. What motivated Mike Hill to adapt safaris?
A. His volunteering experience. B. A desire to meet unmet needs.
C. His longing to make a fortune. D. A family member’s disability.
25. What does the underlined phrase “level the playing field” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Gain official permission. B. Build camps on flat ground.
C. Offer equal access to the wild. D. Raise standards for outdoor travel.
26. Which words best describe the author’s travel with Endeavour Safaris?
A. Eco-friendly and wild. B. Tough and adventurous.
C. Amazing and demanding. D. Liberating and fulfilling.
27. What do Mike Hill’s words in the last paragraph suggest?
A. More pioneers should engage in safari services.
B. The disabled should take the initiative for the change.
C. Travel should be the key to removing social inequality.
D. The safari industry should ensure travel chances for all.

What does it take to become the best at something? The answer may not lie in early childhood excellence or in lifelong focused dedication. Instead the path to becoming exceptional at a skill might take a much less direct route.
That’s according to recent research published in Science that seeks to find out what it takes to excel in different performance areas. Somewhat surprisingly, the authors learned, people showing the greatest promise in their discipline as children rarely went on to reach the top of their field as adults.
The findings blow up the “10,000-hour rule,” the idea that if someone spends 10,000 hours purposely practicing a skill, they will master it, says Purdue University psychologist Brooke Macnamara, who co-authored the analysis. The rule, popularized in Malcolm Gladwell’s 2008 book Outliers, is based on a 1993 study of top-performing violin students. They had each accumulated an average of 10,000 hours of practice by age 20. Yet they were not world-class performers, Macnamara points out.
“By contrast, world-class performers often started their discipline later,” Macnamara explains. These people tend to engage in multiple activities early on. They accumulate less practice in their discipline and more practice in other disciplines and then rise to the top relatively late. The researchers highlight that the findings aren’t suggesting people don’t need to put in effort to become a chess grandmaster or a Wimbledon winner. Instead they show that top adult performers tend to be “late bloomers (大器晚成者)”.
The findings matter for institutions and coaches who might be biased toward directing resources at the kids who show the most promise in a given field early on. The research holds a message, too, for people who want to pursue a skill or dream but didn’t win their school competition or make it to the top of their youth league: don’t despair. “For people who didn’t follow the prodigy (天才) route, know you are in good company!” Macnamara says. “Most world-class performers didn’t, either.”
28. Why are the top-performing violin students mentioned?
A. To challenge a popular belief. B. To introduce a research method.
C. To recommend Gladwell’s book. D. To present a common phenomenon.
29. What are the key features of late bloomers in their early years?
A. Rapid progress and sharp focus.
B. Natural talent and deep commitment.
C. Modest beginnings and broad exposure.
D. Strict self-discipline and strong willpower.
30. According to the last paragraph, what does the research imply?
A. Coaches should push prodigies to stay ahead.
B. Institutions should invest more in early achievers.
C. Talented children should seek professional guidance.
D. Young people should stay positive despite early failures.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Secret to Greatness: Stay Focused
B. Late Bloomers: Path to Excellence
C. Way to Stand out: Constant Efforts
D. Early Starters: Promise of the Future
D
Heat pumps, an electrical device moving heat from the outdoors into people’s homes, are much more efficient than gas heaters but are subject to icing up, which greatly reduces their effectiveness. Zhibin Yu, who works at the University of Glasgow, UK, wrestled with the problem for months and had an idea — if he could capture and reroute the heat that most heat pumps waste when they generate it, that could solve the defrosting issue and boost the pumps’ overall performance.
The idea relies on the very principle by which heat pumps operate: if you can seize heat, you can use it. Yu and his colleagues have built a prototype (样机) that stores leftover heat in a small water tank. Plus, by separately redirecting some of this residual (残余的) warmth to part of the heat pump exposed to cold air, the device can defrost itself when required, without having to pause heat supply to the house. “Yu’s idea is innovative,” says Rick Greenough, a retired energy systems engineer from De Montfort University. “I must admit this is a method I hadn’t actually thought of.”
Yu’s work is one of several recent innovations that aim to make the 200-year-old heat pump technology more efficient, potentially opening the door for greater adoption of heat pumps worldwide. Due to the current energy crisis and growing pressure to reduce fossil fuel consumption, these devices are arguably more crucial than ever.
Despite the urgency, heat pumps have struggled to become commonplace in some countries. One reason is cost; another is a long-held perception that heat pumps won’t work as well in cold climates.
Not every home is suitable for a heat pump and not every budget can accommodate one. Yu admits that the cost of replacing the gas boiler in his own home remains prohibitive. But it’s something Yu dreams of doing in the future. With ever-improving efficiencies and commercialization of new technology, heat pumps are only getting harder for their doubters to dismiss.
32. What problem with heat pumps was Yu trying to solve?
A. Frost buildup. B. High energy waste.
C. Poor heat transfer. D. Frequent breakdowns.
33. What is the core mechanism behind Yu’s innovation?
A. Recycling the lost heat.
B. Improving heat absorption.
C. Delivering nonstop space heating.
D. Reducing device exposure to the cold.
34. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The evolution of heating devices.
B. The future adoption of heat pumps.
C. The demand for alternative energy.
D. The drive for heat-pump innovations.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Doubts about heat pumps have been cleared.
B. Commercializing new technology is difficult.
C. Heating systems are prohibited in some places.
D. Heat pumps are gaining a more promising future.
Does your partner replay difficult conversations for days, or get easily overwhelmed by bright lights, strong smells or loud noises? ____36____
While not a clinical diagnosis, being an HSP refers to having an ability to process emotional information more deeply than others. This can lead to over-stimulation, stronger empathy, and a greater need for downtime to protect their own inner resources. So, what practical steps can you take to support a highly sensitive partner?
Show acceptance
Acceptance means recognising and acknowledging how an HSP experiences the world. ____37____ You don’t need to agree in order to accept. It is important to show that you accept them as they are, and that you validate their experiences. This helps them feel safer with you.
Avoid critical comments around sensitivity
People might label HSPs’ responses as overreactions. Comments such as “you’re too sensitive” can feel extremely critical. ____38____ Tell them they may process information differently — they are simply coping with their own nervous system.
____39____
Feeling deeply can leave people exhausted, so they may need more downtime or their own space to adjust. Even smaller decisions can feel overwhelming. Time pressure can also intensify anxiety for HSPs. Speaking slowly, calmly and with generous pauses, will help to counteract their feelings of overwhelm.
Manage conflict with compassion (共情)
We all say things we don’t mean when we’re upset. However, it’s important to navigate arguments with compassion. HSPs may be processing many things at once during a disagreement, like your words, tone, the tension in the room, and their own emotional reactions. ____40____ So giving them time to pause and adjust can make communication much easier.
A. Give them time.
B. Create relaxing atmosphere.
C. HSPs are often misunderstood by others.
D. This can quickly become overwhelming.
E. Instead, approach them with the understanding.
F. If so, they could be a highly sensitive person (HSP).
G. Let them know their perspective is valid, whether or not you share it.

Melanie was sitting in the backyard trying to write an outline for her science report, but she was out of ideas. She had tried writing about the greenhouse effect, the planets, and magnets, but she couldn’t get into any of those topics. They were so boring! She needed something different!
“Melanie,” her mom called from the kitchen, “keep an eye on Tom. I don’t want him in the treehouse by himself.” Her little brother had run out the back door and up the treehouse ladder. “But Mom, I am trying to get my work done,” protested Melanie, but her mother insisted in an authoritative tone. Melanie rolled her eyes, picked up her notebook and headed for the treehouse.
“Melanie, I found bird eggs! Come and see!” Tom shouted. Melanie sighed, knowing she would not get anywhere on the outline. Tom pointed out four tiny eggs in a nest made of straw and thin branches, but Melanie didn’t see what the big deal was.
“I think they’re robin (知更鸟) eggs,” Tom said. “When do you think they’ll hatch?”
“I don’t know,” Melanie wasn’t really listening to him. She was thinking about her science project.
Tom checked on them three times that day and didn’t see the mother robin. But she must have been there. The eggs looked as if they had been rearranged. On Wednesday three baby birds were chirping (叽喳) loudly right outside the treehouse window. Melanie and Tom got their parents to come up for a better look. “They must have just hatched,” their mom commented. “Why don’t we give them some privacy for a couple of days? Then we can check on them again.”
Three days later, the weather had become warmer, and there were four birds in the nest now. They were bigger, and soft down feathers had grown on their bodies, with their beaks (喙) pointing up. “They are waiting for the mother bird to bring them food,” explained their father. “She’s probably out hunting for some now.” When their parents left, Melanie and Tom stared out the window for half an hour, waiting for the mother bird.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Suddenly, Melanie spotted something near the treehouse window.

M: Yes, that’s right. He liked to keep to himself. He lived alone and painted in secret for most of his life. His family only discovered his talent after he passed away at the age of 92. When they cleared out his house, they found more than 300 paintings that no one had ever seen.
W: He would be so amazed and happy to see his paintings on display like this!
M: Exactly. What I really love is that these paintings show you his entire life from beginning to end.

M: Thank you. I’m glad to be here.
W: So, would you please tell our listeners why you became an astronomer?
M: When I was a little boy, I loved the night sky. I remember looking up at the stars and asking my parents many questions, such as how many there were, how far away they were and whether we could visit them. I was amazed by their beauty and that’s why I became an astronomer. But now, in most big cities, kids can’t see the stars like I did.
W: So, do you have any suggestion to tackle this problem?
M: Yeah, actually there is a method that is inexpensive and has immediate benefits. If we shine lights down at the ground instead of up into the sky and use lower brightness levels, we can preserve the beauty of the night sky.

W: What do you mean?
M: Right now, there is currently a shortage of people able to care for our aging population.
W: So they are creating robots to do it? Aren’t robots cold and uncaring?
M: It depends on the type of robot, I guess. Scientists in Japan have made them look like humans and animals so people form a connection with them. They are part of a long-term study to see if robots can care for people like humans do.
W: What can the robots do?
M: Many things. They perform basic tasks like cooking and cleaning. Some are more advanced and can carry people around or help them walk.
W: The technology has come a long way, but I’d still be worried about robots doing something they shouldn’t.
M: They are all programmed to take care of people. Robots are less likely to make mistakes than human caregivers, who often work long hours with little sleep.
W: That’s a good point. I never thought of that.

B 25. C 26. D 27. B

根据第一段中““I had worked in safaris all my life,” he told me, “when I suddenly realised that no one was catering for people with physical disabilities.” Beyond a missed opportunity, Mike felt he had a responsibility to change this.(“我一生都在从事野生动物观光工作,”他告诉我,“突然间我意识到,没有人为身体有障碍的人提供服务。”除了错失良机之外,迈克还感到自己有责任去改变这一现状。)”可知,迈克·希尔发现残障人士的旅行需求没有被满足,想要填补这一空白,这促使他改造野生动物观光项目。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“Mike recognised that there are two physical factors that determine whether a disabled traveller can participate in a safari: transport and accommodation.(迈克意识到,决定残障旅行者能否参与野生动物观光的有两个物理因素:交通和住宿。)”以及划线短语句中“Control those and you…(只要控制好这两个方面……)”
根据第三段中“When I travelled with Endeavour Safaris last year and experienced it for myself, it was extraordinary. The vehicle meant I could access the bush with dignity and independence, and the camp more than met my needs.(去年我跟着Endeavour Safaris一起旅行并亲身体验后,感觉非同寻常。这辆车意味着我可以有尊严、独立地进入丛林,营地也完全满足了我的需求。)”可推知,作者这次旅行体验极好,能够保有尊严、独立地走进野外,身心得到释放,需求也得到充分满足。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Making safaris accessible to people who never thought they could do it is the highlight for me,” he told me. “But here’s the moral of the story: the world will only change when more disabled people travel. You need pioneers. So my message is simple: travel, travel, travel.”(“让那些从未想过自己能参与的人也能体验到野生动物观光,是我最引以为傲的成就。”他告诉我,“但故事的寓意是:只有更多残障人士出行,世界才会真正改变。你需要的是先驱者。因此我的信息很简单:去旅行吧,去旅行吧,去旅行吧。”)”可知,迈克·希尔在最后一段话中的话语暗示了残障人士应主动推动变革。
C
A 29. C 30. D 31. B

根据第三段“The findings blow up the “10,000-hour rule,” the idea that if someone spends 10,000 hours purposely practicing a skill, they will master it, says Purdue University psychologist Brooke Macnamara, who co-authored the analysis. The rule, popularized in Malcolm Gladwell’s 2008 book Outliers, is based on a 1993 study of top-performing violin students. They had each accumulated an average of 10,000 hours of practice by age 20. Yet they were not world-class performers, Macnamara points out.( 这一发现推翻了“一万小时定律”——即只要一个人刻意练习一项技能1万小时,就能掌握它。
根据第四段中““By contrast, world-class performers often started their discipline later,” Macnamara explains. These people tend to engage in multiple activities early on.
A 33. A 34. D 35. D

F 37. G 38. E 39. A 40. D
上文“Does your partner replay difficult conversations for days, or get easily overwhelmed by bright lights, strong smells or loud noises.(你的伴侣是否会在几天内反复回忆艰难的对话,或容易被明亮的灯光、强烈的气味或巨大的噪音所困扰?)”列举伴侣反复回想艰难对话、容易被强光、浓烈气味、巨大噪音压垮的现象,F选项“If so, they could be a highly sensitive person(HSP).( 如果是这样,他们可能是一个高度敏感的人(HSP)。)”
本段小标题为“Show acceptance(表示接纳)”,前句“Acceptance means recognising and acknowledging how an HSP experiences the world.(接纳意味着承认并认可高度敏感者如何体验世界。)”讲接纳就是理解并认可HSP感知世界的方式,G选项“Let them know their perspective is valid, whether or not you share it.(让他们知道,无论你是否认同,他们的观点都是合理的。)”进一步阐释接纳的内涵,和后文“You don’t need to agree in order to accept.(你不需要认同对方的观点才能接受他们。)”
上文“Comments such as “you’re too sensitive” can feel extremely critical.(诸如“你太敏感了”之类的评论可能显得极为苛刻。)”指出“你太敏感了”这类评价会造成伤害,下文“Tell them they may process information differently — they are simply coping with their own nervous system.(告诉他们,他们可能处理信息的方式不同——他们只是在应对自己的神经系统。)” E选项“Instead, approach them with the understanding.( 相反,应以理解的态度去接近他们。)”
下文“Feeling deeply can leave people exhausted, so they may need more downtime or their own space to adjust. Even smaller decisions can feel overwhelming. Time pressure can also intensify anxiety for HSPs. Speaking slowly, calmly and with generous pauses, will help to counteract their feelings of overwhelm.(强烈的情绪体验容易让人感到疲惫,因此他们可能需要更多的休息时间或属于自己的空间来调整。
上文“HSPs may be processing many things at once during a disagreement, like your words, tone, the tension in the room, and their own emotional reactions.( 在争论过程中,高敏感人群可能会同时在处理许多事情:你的言语、语气、现场的紧张气氛,以及他们自己的情绪反应。)”说明争执中 HSP 会同时处理大量信息:你的言辞、语气、房间里的紧张感以及自身的情绪反应;下文“So giving them time to pause and adjust can make communication much easier.( 因此,给予他们暂停和调整的时间,能让沟通变得更加顺畅。)” D选项“This can quickly become overwhelming.( 这很容易让人感到不堪重负。)”

Dear fellow students,
Today I’d like to share my thoughts on the topic “Study Alone or Study in Groups”.
Personally, I prefer studying in groups. When we run into difficult problems, we can discuss different ideas and figure them out together, which helps us grasp knowledge more deeply. Besides, studying with peers keeps us motivated and focused, as we cheer each other up when we feel worn out. It also helps develop our communication and teamwork skills.
Of course, there is no one-size-fits-all method. Just choose the way that works best for you.
Thank you for listening!

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Suddenly, Melanie spotted something near the treehouse window.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A few days later, Melanie sat in the backyard again for her science report.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly, Melanie spotted something near the treehouse window. It was the mother robin returning with food in her mouth. Softly, she landed on the nest and fed the noisy baby birds. Melanie watched in fascination as the little birds stretched their necks eagerly. An idea flashed across her mind. Instead of thinking about those boring topics, she could record the whole growth process of robins for her science report. She pulled out her notebook secretly and began to take careful notes of every detail she observed. Tom sat beside her, eyes wide with joy, whispering not to disturb the bird family.
A few days later, Melanie sat in the backyard again for her science report. This time she was filled with inspiration. She described how the robin eggs hatched, how the baby birds grew feathers and how the mother bird fed them. She even drew a simple diagram of the nest and added a data table of feeding times. When she finished, Melanie felt proud of her work. Thanks to the little robins and her brother Tom, she got a special, lively topic for her report, far better than those subjects she had considered before.

I guess scientists in japan have made them look like humans and animals, so people form a connection with them. They are part of a long term study to see if robots can care for people like humans do. What can the robots do? Many things. They perform basic tasks like cooking and cleaning, summer more advanced, that can Carry people around or help them walk. The technology has come a long way, but i'd still be worried about robots doing something they shouldn't. They are programmed to take care of people. Robots are less likely to make mistakes than human caregivers, who often work long hours with little sleep. That's a good point. I never thought of that. Do you struggle to plan your day? Do you find that you get to the end of the week and haven't achieved everything you need to do?
