Life is full of struggles. Sometimes, we simply want to avoid them. But even when our minds are constantly telling us that we should call it a day, we can still keep on going. The solution is the Cookie Jar.
The Cookie Jar method was created by one of the toughest men alive, David Goggins. Goggins is a retired Navy SEAL, who has competed in more than sixty ultra-marathons triathlon.
To raise money for a non-profit organization for orphans, Goggins decided to run Badwater 135. Badwater is the world’s hardest foot race. To qualify for Badwater, one has to run 100 miles in 3 days, that is, 4 marathons in one go. With zero preparation and training, Goggins decided to have a try.
For the first few miles of the race, he felt fine and had no trouble running. But at mile 50, his legs felt like they were loaded with lead. Still he ran. Then at mile 70, he couldn’t take another step forward. Exhausted and feeling beaten down, he sat down to rest. He kept on asking himself, “Why? Why are you still doing this to yourself?” He then remembered this wasn’t the first time he’d taken on an impossible task. And he suddenly felt some energy build up. He started walking slowly, step by step. He kept on digging in his past while remembering all his previous victories (胜利), making him get the energy he needed to keep on going. His feet were still a bloody mess, full of blisters. But it gave him just enough drive to sustain him, until the 100-mile mark. And that’s what the Cookie Jar is.
We all have a cookie jar inside us. Whenever you face a challenge, whenever you want to give up, you open the cookie jar and pick a cookie. The cookie reminds you of something you’ve overcome and how far you’ve come. Eventually, you’ll slowly build up your mind to be more mentally tough. Impossible, will turn into, I can do this.
4. What does the underlined phrase “call it a day” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Stop and give up. B. Celebrate a day.
C. Name a day. D. Have a new start.
5. What can we learn about David Goggins?
A. He is a member of Navy SEAL now.
B. He got injured halfway through the race.
C. He is a determined man with public spirit.
D. He was informed of the Cookie Jar method.
6. According to the text, what does “the Cookie jar” stand for?
A. The happy memory. B. The past achievement.
C. The container for cookies. D. The challenge to face.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Find the Cookie Jar inside Us.
B. The Advantages of Cookie Jar.
C. The World’s Hardest Foot Race.
D. How to Create Your Cookie Jar.

Sun Rui, a mother in Beijing, changed some of her plans for her 8-year-old son’s summer vacation. She had looked for an out-of-school English course, but in the end, she changed it to a swimming training class. “It is because of the strict rules on subject-tutoring classes out of schools, many parents like me choose sports or other classes for developing interests instead,” Sun said.
Sun’s choice is part of the result of the government’s growing efforts to reduce the academic pressure on young students.
On July 24, Chinese government introduced the rules in order to reduce the burden of homework and after-class tutoring for primary and junior high school students. It lists requirements in areas such as reducing the amount and the difficulty of homework and after-class services provided by schools. For example, homework for primary children below the third grade is not allowed, while homework for junior high school students should take no longer than 90 minutes to finish. Out-of-school classes cannot teach students knowledge that is ahead of the school curriculum. No subject lessons can be given on weekends, national holidays or during winter and summer vacations.
“According to Global Times, more than 75 per cent of Chinese children in cities, from grade 1 to grade 12, take part in out-of-school subject classes. This has led to many social problems such as students’ falling levels of physical fitness, more mental health problems and huge family costs, ” said Chu Zhaohui, a senior researcher with the National Institute of Education Sciences.
Many parents showed their support for the new moves. “Subject learning is enough at school and we hope the children’s life can be more relaxing during holidays”, a parent in Guangzhou told Xinhua. However, there are also some parents who have new fears. A mother in Shanxi said that although she agreed with the new rules, she was worried that both she and her husband had no time to be with her son.
8. Why did Sun Rui let her son sign up for a swimming class instead of an English course?
A. Her son would like to be a swimming athlete.
B. The government made rules on subject-tutoring classes.
C. She considered her son had mastered English well enough.
D. She wanted to set an example to other parents.
9. According to the rules introduced on July 24 ________.
A. primary students in grade one and grade two have no homework after school
B. junior high school students should do their homework for more than 90 minutes
C. out-of-school classes can’t teach any knowledge in school textbooks
D. during summer vacations, junior students can have subject classes outside schools
10. In Chu Zhaohui’s opinion, taking part in out-of-school subject classes can ________.
A. help children stay fit
B. have a positive effect on children’s mental health
C. increase some families’ extra spending
D. help children learn better at school
11 What is parents’ reaction to the new rules?
A. Some parents feel anxious about their children’s study at school.
B. They want their children to take part in more out-of-school classes.
C. They all think it is hard for them to accept the rules right now.
D. Some parents have new worries for they have no time to keep their children company after school.
D
Rolling hills and endless green grasslands – those pictures often appear in our mind when we think of the country lifestyle. When outdoor activities were limited in many countries across the world during the pandemic (疫病) social media(媒体) seemed to be filled by pictures of village life. So, why is living in the countryside becoming increasingly popular – and is it really good to consider a slower life?
It is understandable that some people would want to give up the crowded and noisy city streets for the traditional country life – especially during a period like a pandemic. Having more time to stay indoors and the periods of working from home get people to think about what they want from life. But it's not just about having a greener place to look at out of your window.
It has been proved that living in the countryside does good to you. There's less air pollution in the countryside, which reduces the possibility of developing some diseases for breathing the polluted air. You also get more chances to take long walks and see the beautiful countryside, meaning you can get more exercise. Less noise, more walks and better air can also lead to less stress and a longer life, according to studies done by the British government in 2012.
However, there are some things that need to be considered. Living far from the city means that some people may feel lonely. And as people get older, life far from doctors or public transport could become a bit of a challenge. So, if you're considering a change of life and moving to a picturesque village, there are both advantages and disadvantages to consider before taking action.
12. What did people like to share in their social media during the pandemic?
A. Pictures of life in the countryside. B. Pictures of their outdoor activities.
C. Pictures of life in cities. D. Pictures of working at home.
13. The writer lists the advantages of living in the countryside EXCEPT_________.
A. fresher air B. more chances of exercise
C. working at home. D. beautiful countryside views
14. According to the study in 2012, who will live a healthier and longer life?
A. A man who lives near a noisy factory.
B. A man who lives a busy life with no time to exercise.
C A man who lives in a heavily polluted city.
D. A man who lives in a peaceful village, jogging every morning.
15. From the last paragraph, we can infer that_________.
A. living in the countryside is good for many old people.
B. people should think twice before moving to the countryside.
C. people feel lonely in cities so they want to move to the countryside.
D. there are more advantages than disadvantages in moving to the countryside.

As a speaker of 10 languages I know the benefits of speaking more than one language. Actually, it is not a big challenge to learn languages. We only have to change the way we learn them. ___16___
Language learning is hard.
It is only difficult to learn a language if you don’t want to. ___17___ What you mostly need to do is spend some time listening and reading. Believe me, it is that simple. I have done it many times. Soon you feel the satisfaction of understanding another language. Before you know it you start speaking.
___18___
No, you don’t. Anyone who wants to, can learn. In Sweden and Holland most people speak more than one language. They can’t just all be gifted at languages. Foreign athletes in North America usually learn to speak English faster than people in more formal learning environments. In language learning it is attitude that determines success.
You have to live where the language is spoken.
Some immigrants (移民) to North America never learn to speak more than broken English. Yet we meet people in other countries who speak perfect English. In 1968, I learned to speak Mandarin fluently while living in Hong Kong, where few people spoke it. ___19___ You can download it to your iPod and listen. Where you live is not a problem.
I would love to learn but I don’t have the time.
How about the time you spend waiting in line, doing things around the house, going for a walk? ___20___ Once you get started, even 10 or 15 minutes a day will soon grow to 30 minutes a day, or one hour. If you believe you will achieve great results, and if you enjoy doing it, as I do, you will find the time.
I believe if you can avoid these traps, we will surely become masters of language learning.
A. The following are some tips for you to follow.
B. You have to have a gift for learning languages.
C. Learning a language takes time, but is not difficult
D. We need to avoid some common misunderstandings
E. Languages can only be learned instead of being taught.
F. Why not use that time to listen to a language on your iPod?
G. With the Internet, language content is available to anyone with a computer.

Life is full of struggles. Sometimes, we simply want to avoid them. But even when our minds are constantly telling us that we should call it a day, we can still keep on going. The solution is the Cookie Jar.
The Cookie Jar method was created by one of the toughest men alive David Goggins.

9. According to the rules introduced on July 24, ________.
A. primary students in grade one and grade two have no homework after school
B. junior high school students should do their homework for more than 90 minutes
C. out-of-school classes can’t teach any knowledge in school textbooks
D. during summer vacations, junior students can have subject classes outside schools
10. In Chu Zhaohui’s opinion, taking part in out-of-school subject classes can ________.
A. help children stay fit
B. have a positive effect on children’s mental health
C. increase some families’ extra spending
D. help children learn better at school
11. What is parents’ reaction to the new rules?
A. Some parents feel anxious about their children’s study at school.
B. They want their children to take part in more out-of-school classes.
C. They all think it is hard for them to accept the rules right now.
D. Some parents have new worries for they have no time to keep their children company after school.

Rolling hills and endless green grasslands – those pictures often appear in our mind when we think of the country lifestyle. When outdoor activities were limited in many countries across the world during the pandemic (疫病), social media(媒体) seemed to be filled by pictures of village life.
C. A man who lives in a heavily polluted city.
