Making decisions on your own is hard enough, but when other people take part in and try to pressure you one way or another, it can be even harder. People who are your age, like your classmates, are called peers. When they try to influence how you act, to get you to do something, it's called peer pressure. 10 Peers can have a positive influence on each other. Maybe another student in your science class taught you an easy way to remember the planets in the solar system. Maybe you got others excited about your new favorite book, and now everyone’s reading it. These are examples of how peers positively influence each other. Sometimes peers influence each other in negative ways. For example, a few kids in school might try to get you to cut class with them. Your soccer friend might try to convince you to be mean to another player and never pass him the ball. 11 It is tough to be the only one who says “no” to peer pressure, but you can do it. Paying attention to your own feelings and beliefs about what is right and wrong can help you know the right thing to do. You've probably had a parent or teacher advising you to “choose your friends wisely”. Peer pressure is a big reason why they say this. If you choose friends who don't cut class, smoke cigarettes, or lie to their parents, then you probably won't do these things either, even if other kids do. 12 If you continue to face peer pressure and you're finding it difficult to deal with, talk to someone you trust. Don't feel guilty (内疚) if you've made a mistake or two. 13 1.For whom is the passage most probably written? A.Teachers. B.Parents. C.Students. D.Doctors. 14 2.How are both Paragraph 2 and 3 developed? A.By space. B.By time. C.By stories. D.By examples. 根据第二段中的“These are examples of how peers positively influence each other. 以及第三段中的“For example ... pass him the ball.” 15 3.Which of following may help deal with peer pressure? A.Taking up more relaxing hobbies. B.Helping others who are in trouble. C.Spending more time with classmates. D.Choosing friends with no bad habits. 16 4.What is the best title of the passage? A.Friendship B.Selfconfidence C.Peer pressure D.Making decisions 17 B Art and science may seem like opposite things. One means the creative flow of ideas, and the other means cold, hard data—some people believe. In fact, the two have much in common. Now, a study finds art can help students remember better what they learned in science class. Mariale Hardiman, an education specialist at Johns Hopkins University, noticed that students who used art in the classroom listened more carefully. They might ask more questions. They might volunteer more ideas. What's more, students seemed to remember more of what they had been taught when their science lessons included art. To prove that, Hardiman teamed up with some researchers and six local schools. 18 In the experiment, the researchers worked with teachers in 16 fifthgrade classrooms. They provided traditional science lessons and artfocused ones. In the artfocused ones, they might sing the information instead. The team randomly (随机地) divided the 350 students into either a traditional science classroom or an artfocused one. Students then learned science using that way for the whole unit—about three weeks. When they changed to a new topic, they also changed to the other type of class. This way, each student had both an artfocused class and a traditional one. Every unit was taught in both ways, to different groups of students. This enabled the researchers to see how students did in both types of classes. 19 The team found that students who started off in traditional classes performed better after they moved into an artfocused class. But those who started in an artfocused class did well even when they went back to a traditional science class. These students appeared to use some of the art techniques (技巧) after going back to a traditional class. Classroom teachers reported that many students continued to sing the songs that they learned after finishing the unit. “The more we hear something, the more we retain it,” Hardiman says. “It suggests that the arts may help students apply creative ways of learning on their own.” 20 5.What is the purpose of the study? A.To offer great ways to teach art lessons. B.To find a way to help students learn better. C.To see if art and science have a lot in common. D. To prove art might be useful for science learning. 21 6.What were the students required to do in the experiment? A.Take two types of classes. B.Learn three units in total. C.Learn two topics for three weeks. D.Choose what they would like to learn. 以及“This way, each student ... both types of classes.(通过这种方式,每个学生都分别上了一个艺术主导式课程和一个传统课程。 故选A。 22 7.What does the underlined word “retain” in the last paragraph mean? A.Improve. B.Express. C.Remember. D.Finish. 根据第二段中的“What's more ... local schools.” 23 8.What is the text type? A.A research report. B.A book review. C.A short story. D.An art introduction. 通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中的“Now, a study finds ... in science class.” 故选A。 Heated arguments and cold silences usually happen between parents and their children.
