Livestream through channels such as Amazon Live and QVC is a popular way to sell goods online. In a session that lasts between 5 and 10 minutes, someone promotes a product. Viewers can then readily buy it by clicking on a link.
Researchers analyzed 99,451 sales cases on a livestream selling platform and matched them with actual sales cases.
To determine the emotional expression of the salesperson, researchers used two deep learning models: a face detection model and an emotion classification model. The face detection model discovers the presence or absence of a face in a frame of a video stream. The emotion classifier then determines the probability that a face is exhibiting any of the six basic human emotions: happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, fear or disgust.
We wanted to see the effect of emotions expressed at different times in the sales cases, so we counted probabilities for each emotion for all 62 million frames in our database. We then combined these probabilities with other possible aspects that might drive sales—such as price and product characteristics—to judge the effect of emotions.
We found that, perhaps unsurprisingly, when salespeople convey more negative emotions—such as anger and disgust—the volume of sales went down. But we also found that a similar thing happened when the salespeople display high levels of positive emotions, such as happiness or surprise.
A likely explanation, based on our research, is that smile can be disgusting because it lacks true feelings and can reduce trust in the seller. A seller's happiness may be taken as a sign that the seller is gaining interests at the customer's expense.
We also found that the negative effects on sales are the strongest when people express emotions in the middle rather than at the beginning or the end of sale. A potential reason for this finding is that the middle is typically when the salesperson offers more details about the product, and it's likely that viewers are turned off by emotions at this point.

Over 85% of adults in the United States report spending more time reading news on their mobile devices than on traditional print media. This isn't that surprising, considering how easily accessible news stories are on our smartphones, as well as the higher level of exposure to news, in general, by means of social media.
But we don't just consume news on our phones. Smartphones are used to study, read books, and look up new information. But a recent study raises concerns about the tendency of a smartphone version of page-turning. The findings suggest that reading on electronic devices actually reduces our comprehension
For this study, researchers made groups of participants either read on a smartphone or a physical printed text. After participants finished reading, they answered ten comprehension questions. The results showed that participants who read the printed version of the text answered more comprehension questions correctly, but brain activity increased regardless of what medium the individuals read from. Participants who read the printed text also sighed more often compared to those who read from a smartphone.
While these findings suggest that reading on a smartphone actually lowers reading comprehension when compared to reading on paper, it's important to keep in mind that the study's sample size was only 34 participants. But past research has made similar claims.
One study found that even just having a smartphone within reach can significantly reduce cognitive (认知的) ability. Smartphone usage has also been linked to sleep disruption and imbalances in brain chemistry. “We generally praise the benefits of technology, but often ignore the negative impacts on brain health,” says professor Shaheen Lakhan of California University of Science and Medicine.
For anything of importance that requires a high level of processing and understanding, Lakhan recommends printing out the content. “If this isn't practical, start off with a deep breath before reading anything on your phone,” he says, “make sure distractors (干扰) are turned off both within your phone and in the general environment, like background noise.”

29.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The steps of the study.
B.The results of the study.
C.The purposes of the study.
D.The advantages of the study.
30.Why does the author mention the previous similar research?
A.To support the new study.
B.To explain the new study.
C.To question the new study.
D.To make up for the new study.
答案:A

B.Using smartphones at the right time.
C.Keeping breathing deeply when reading.
D.Staying focused when reading on phones.

How would you go without your smartphone? For many of us, our smartphone is the first and last thing we look at every day. We depend on it to perform a number of tasks and connect with our friends and family. But have we become addicted to our phones?
Certainly, the inventor of the first mobile phone, American engineer Martin Cooper, thinks we might be. In a BBC interview, he suggested people quit scrolling (刷屏) and “get a life”. But of course, once we start scrolling or watching videos, we just can't kick the habit. Psychologist Jean Twenge says we feel regret for “checking our phone again and again if we're waiting for a text or getting really into social media then kind of, looking up and realising that an hour has passed.”
But does it matter if we make the most of this technology? Possibly, because like medicine, the problem appears when it is withdrawn. A study from King's College London found young people couldn't control the amount of time they spend on their phone. Such behaviour means that people become “anxious” or “upset” if they are not allowed to be on the phone continuously, which can cause anxiety and mental health problems.
Interestingly, another study by the London School of Economics Science suggests we don't just look at our phones when we receive text or email messages. The people they studied felt an automatical (自动的) need to check their phone, just as a smoker would light a cigarette.
One solution could be an app that rewards students for time spent away from their phones. Another choice is changing your smartphone to a dumbphone that has none of the things that turn your attention away. But mainly, perhaps, we just need to look up more and reconnect with the real world!
32.What is Martin Cooper's attitude to focusing on smartphones?
A.Uncaring. B.Doubtful.
C.Unclear. D.Unacceptable.

33.What does the underlined word “withdrawn” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Stopped. B.Increased.
C.Offered. D.Saved.
答案:A
根据画线词下文“Such behaviour means ... and mental health problems.” 故选A。
34.What is the author's key suggestion in the last paragraph?
A.Concentrate on studies.
B.Get a reward for offline time.
C.Buy a new smartphone.
D.Contact with the real world.

Dear Editor,
I'm writing to tell you something about how the students use the Internet. As we all know, the Internet is playing an important part in our daily life. Many of us students often read news at home and abroad and learn foreign languages by ourselves on the Internet. Sometimes we send emails to our families as well as our friends. Besides, we listen to music, enjoy films and play computer games on it. We can even do shopping without leaving our homes.
However, it has its disadvantages. Many students waste too much time playing the electronic games, which has a bad effect on their studies. What's worse, the bad information on the Internet does great harm to them. I hope every student can make use of the Internet properly for their studies.
Yours truly,
Li Hua
The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss's attention on December 16.
He was hiking behind his ranch (牧场) in Patagonia, Arizona, a town near the US-Mexico border, when he found a balloon on the grass. Heiss walked towards it with his dog, thinking he would pick up something useless and throw it away.
That was when he noticed the balloon was connected to a piece of paper. “Dayami”, it read on one side, in a child's writing. Turning the paper over, he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. “My Spanish isn't very good, but I could see it was a Christmas,” he said.
Heiss was attracted. He thought that maybe a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the kid who had sent this one.
It would be difficult, but he believed he could work it out. About 32 kilometers to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico. “Based on the prevailing wind (盛行风), I was pretty sure that's where it came from,” he said.
Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is good at Spanish and helped him translate the list. The elderly couple figured out that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, clothes and some art supplies.
Heiss then posted on social media along with some photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl's family. A few days passed with no useful information provided; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, he decided to send a message to Radio XENY, a radio station based in Nogales.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away.
Arriving at the Radio XENY offices with presents, the elderly couple finally met the excited little girl.
To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away. They brought good news that they had located the eight-year-old girl, Dayami, and her family. He felt so happy and excited that he wanted to see the little girl at once. He went shopping with his wife. In order to buy all the presents on the list, they went to many places. With their efforts, they bought everything on Dayami's list. Thinking of the happiness of the girl, they were very tired, but very happy.
Arriving at the Radio XENY offices with presents, the elderly couple finally met the excited little girl. Heiss gave the presents to the girl and said, “Merry Christmas!” The little girl received the presents in surprise and hugged Heiss tightly. With a bright smile on her face, she said, “Thank you, Santa Claus.” “We now have friends for life,” Heiss said. Since then, he and the girl's family have become friends. Although they don't see each other often, they send presents to each other every Christmas.
