A When Kurt Benirschke started collecting skin samples from endangered animals in 1972, he didn't have a firm plan on what to do with them. As a researcher at the University of California San Diego, he believed that one day these samples would be used to save these animals. A few years later, he moved his collection to the San Diego Zoo, and called it the Frozen Zoo. For a long time, it was the only project of its kind; however, in recent years, similar conservation efforts have spread globally, and tools that Benirschke didn't yet have are now available. Today, the Frozen Zoo is the world's largest animal cryobank (生物冷冻库), holding samples from over 10,500 individual animals from 1,220 species, in the hope that one day science can bring them back as a species. The Frozen Zoo's advanced technology is the key to its success in saving species from extinction. By using cryopreservation techniques, the zoo can store cells and tissues from endangered animals. The stored genetic material can be used for research, breeding (繁殖) programs, and potentially even cloning or genetic engineering to restore endangered species. By protecting the genetic heritage of endangered animals, the Frozen Zoo provides hope for the survival of species that would otherwise be at risk of dying out, and the preservation of Earth's precious biodiversity. It has inspired the establishment of similar cryobanks worldwide, expanding efforts to conserve endangered species. These cryobanks contribute to the global network of genetic resources, improving cooperation and knowledge exchange. By demonstrating the potential of technology in the preservation of biodiversity, the frozen zoo serves as a powerful tool in raising awareness and driving change. The Frozen Zoo is like a time capsule, preserving the genetic heritage of endangered species for future generations. It reminds us about the importance of conservation and offers a window into a world that could otherwise be lost forever. 1.What do we know about the Frozen Zoo? A.It is the world's oldest and largest animal cryobank. B.It started with a detailed plan led by Kurt Benirschke. C.It is a project to explore the evolution of animal species. D.It was established to protect animals in the San Diego Zoo. 根据第二段中的“For a long time, it was the only project of its kind”和“Today, the Frozen Zoo is the world's largest animal cryobank (生物冷冻库)”可知,“冷冻动物园”是世界上最古老、最大的动物冷冻库。故选A。 2.How does the Frozen Zoo save species from extinction? A.By expanding their natural habitats. B.By raising their survival rate with genetic technology. C.By preserving their genetic material for further research. D.By innovating breeding techniques to increase their population. C。 3.Why does the author mention “time capsule” in the last paragraph? A.To stress the importance of the Frozen Zoo. B.To explain the urgency of saving endangered species. C.To prove the potential value of preserving biodiversity. D.To show the necessity of cooperative conservation efforts. A。 4.What words could best describe the Frozen Zoo project? A.Costly and controversial. B.Profitable and instructive. C.Conservative and effective. D.Pioneering and significant. 根据第二段中的“For a long time, it was the only project of its kind”可知,冷冻动物园率先开启并引领了通过冷冻来保护濒危物种免于灭绝的方法。 D。 B I always listen to my local public radio station while I'm driving. My focus often changes as I stare out at the road ahead. But I became fully attentive on a recent morning once I realized the entire newscast was dedicated to local wildlife. There was something about the pack of some 30 to 50 javelinas (野猪) that ruined a golf course near Sedona, Arizona, followed by talk of the recent sighting of a jaguar (美洲虎), a species that ranged across Arizona and Sonora, Mexico, until construction of the border wall blocked the way. Finally, there was an update on Mexican wolf reintroduction efforts in New Mexico and Arizona. The results were mixed: Nine of the wolves had died or been killed recently. As I sat in my car, listening to the news, I felt helpless, even mournful. What would it take for most of us to understand that the javelinas' behavior on that heavily irrigated golf course in the desert was a sign that maybe the course shouldn't be in the desert to begin with? The way I saw it, the javelinas weren't invading (入侵) the site; they were reclaiming it. After all, the javelinas' needs—for food and space—are more basic than a few privileged humans' desire to play golf. As for the Arizona Mexican wolf pup reintroduction effort that I heard about in the news, for the past 25 years, scientists have been working hard to restore the native wolf population, and yet are unable to remove its greatest threat. Today, almost 250 Mexican wolves are believed to be in the wild, and every year, humans illegally kill one out of ten. The wolf recovery effort is necessary, but it's extremely difficult because we humans keep getting in the way. I need to tackle my helplessness, because helplessness leads to no longer wanting to take care of what matters most. Therefore, I think that it must be a good sign that my local news now regularly covers the challenges of coexistence and possible solutions to our problems. That's progress and fuels my hope. 5.What is the morning news about? A.Dangers of local wildlife. B.Efforts to reintroduce wildlife. C.Issues of humanwildlife coexistence. D.Distribution of wildlife around the world. 根据第一段中的“But I became fully attentive ... local wildlife.” C。 6.Why did the javelinas destroy the golf course according to the author? A.To meet basic needs. B.To protect the desert. C.To oppose golf playing. D.To attack human beings. 根据第三段中的“The way I saw ... to play golf.(在我看来,野猪并没有入侵这个球场;它们正在收回它。毕竟,野猪对食物和空间的需求比少数特权阶层打高尔夫球的欲望更基本。)”可知,野猪摧毁高尔夫球场是为了满足它们的基本需求。故选A。 7.What do we know about the Mexican wolves? A.They are bound to go extinct. B.Humans threaten their survival. C.Their number has greatly increased. D.10% of them have been reintroduced. B。 8.What is the author's attitude to the challenges mentioned in the last paragraph? A.Unclear. B.Negative. C.Optimistic. D.Indifferent. 根据最后一段中的“Therefore, I think that ... my hope.” Animals are living creatures and most of us often forget about this. That's all. Thank you! [精彩范文] Good morning! I'm honored to stand here to deliver my speech, whose theme is “When the buying stops, the killing can, too”. As we all know, our planet is our beautiful home, where wildlife and humans should have lived together harmoniously. However, more and more wildlife is faced with extinction, whose habitats are becoming smaller as new roads and railways were built. Even worse, to make profit, hunters are killing wildlife. Many animals are being butchered to meet buyers' need, causing their population to drop increasingly. It's high time that we should change our way of life and stop hunting wildlife. If everyone boycotts buying any products made from wildlife, the killing can stop, too. Only when we learn to exist in harmony with nature can we stop being a threat to our planet. That's all.
