Festivals are important occasions that bring people together to celebrate and enjoy. During these special times, various activities take place, each with its own charm.
In many Western countries, when a fancy-looking Christmas tree is set up in the living room, it indicates that the holiday season has begun. People then start to decorate it with colorful lights and ornaments (装饰品). One of the highlights of Christmas is the delicious dessert—Christmas pudding. It's a traditional dish that many families look forward to having on Christmas Eve.
Hosting a festival party can be a lot of fun but also requires a lot of preparation. The host has to make sure that there's enough food and drinks for all the guests. For example, at a New Year's Eve party, the host might prepare a variety of snacks and arrange for some fireworks to be set off at midnight. The colorful fireworks light up the night sky. They look really beautiful and make everyone feel amazed.
In China, the Spring Festival is the most important holiday. At this time, family members who live far away come back home to get together. During the Spring Festival, people have a lot of traditional ways to celebrate. The lion dance is one of them. People wear bright and colorful lion costumes. Then they move the lion's head and tail around, just like real lions do.
When it comes to festivals, people often have different requests. Some may request traditional music to be played at the gathering, while others may request special dishes to be added to the menu. Regardless of these requests, the common goal is to create a warm and joyful atmosphere.

The Chinese New Year is all about starting things anew. So, in the week leading up to the festival, people do a thorough cleaning of their homes to get rid of bad luck. This should all be done before New Year's Day though, as showering is not allowed on the day! At the same time, it is also not allowed to sweep or throw out garbage until the 5th day of the festival. This is because people don't wash out the good luck! There are also a few nonos during the Chinese New Year, which everyone should avoid doing for the 15 days. It is a taboo to get a haircut, argue, swear, say unlucky words, use scissors or knives and break things.
The New Year's Eve meal is still the most important of the year for Chinese families, and throughout the 15 days, it is common to go to different relatives' houses to share food. These feasts are abundant and delicious, with a variety of traditional Chinese food and special wine.
There are different practices and celebrations on each of the festival's 15 days. For example, it is believed that the God of Wealth comes down on the 5th day of the New Year, so people pray to him and set off firecrackers in his honor. The 15th and final day of the New Year festival is known as the Festival of Lanterns, so people hang paper lanterns on the streets and their homes, and carry them on parade.
There are also different symbols used during the Chinese New Year, each one with its own meaning. For example, it is common for red envelopes to be filled with money and given to children or adults with no job. Usually, these red envelopes are gifted by established married couples to their single friends, or from elders to the children. Their purpose is to transfer the fortune and luck from the givers to the receivers.
During the festivities, there are dancing dragon performances, as the creature is believed to bring good luck, good fortune, and prosperity (繁荣). Flowers, tangerines, and oranges are displayed as a sign of good luck and wealth. Decorations are red, made of paper and shaped like a diamond (钻石), and usually have writing on them referring to luck and prosperity.
