Ben Francis didn’t become wealthy through a family inheritance (遗产). Instead, the CEO and co-founder of Gymshark used his earnings as a Pizza Hut delivery guy to buy a sewing machine and start his fitness apparel (服饰) company at 19.
Eleven years later, his effort eventually paid off. Francis, 30, who has a reported net worth of $1.3 billion, joined Forbes’ billionaires list. His achievement is amazing: The list’s average age is 65 years old.
Originally, Francis and co-founder Lewis Morgan launched Gymshark as a website selling fitness supplements. But after getting fed up with his ill-fitting clothes, Francis suggested pivoting the company.
Francis and Morgan bought a sewing machine. The pair brought Gymshark to a bodybuilding exhibition in 2013, but didn’t have any money to spend on advertising. On a whim (一时兴起), they decided to give popular fitness YouTubers free products. “My heroes were on YouTube, ” Francis said. “So it would be so cool if my heroes could come to be with Gymshark at this event. I didn’t really think that much about it. ” Some of those influencers went on to wear the apparel on their channels, launching Gymshark’s sales to $45,000 per day, up from just $450.
Francis quit the CEO role in 2017. “CEO was not the right role for me when I was in my early 20s,” Francis said. “That I’d started a business that had grown very quickly didn’t mean I was the most qualified chief executive.” He spent the next four years supporting leadership roles within Gymshark — including chief product officer and chief marketing officer — to learn more about the ins and outs of the business, before returning as CEO in2021.
That year, the company was valued at $1.45 billion. Still, the company’s billion-dollar valuation is a small-percentage of the market value of competitors like Nike and Lululemon. “I really think Gymshark can be the UK’s answer to those brands,” Francis said. “But that’s not saying that the UK is where it starts and ends for us. We also want to be a truly global brand.”
4. What makes Ben Francis special on Forbes’ billionaires list?
A. His age. B. His wealth.
C. The way he succeeded. D. The business he took up.
5. What does the underlined word “pivoting” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Taking control of. B. Making the best of.
C. Making changes to. D. Attaching importance to.
6. Why did Francis and Morgan offer popular fitness YouTubers free products?
A. To win the support of Forbes’ billionaires. B. To build a good relationship with YouTube.
C. To popularize their products in a cheap way. D. To sing the praises of their heroes on YouTube.
7. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Gymshark: From a website to a big company
B. Gymshark: Taking the lead in fitness clothing
C. Francis: Starting the UK’s fastest-growing company
D. Francis: From a Pizza Hut delivery guy to a billionaire

Evolution(进化) can bring extraordinary makeovers (变革). Today’s songbirds evolved from the wingless dinosaurs that wandered millions of years ago. But some creatures seem to be unchanged—in other words, escape natural selection. The coelacanth, a modern-day fish, looks almost the same as its 410-million-year-old fossils.
Scientists have long wondered how these species (物种) do so. It has been assumed that natural selection keeps some species unchanged by selecting for average qualities (stabilizing selection) rather than selecting for more extreme qualities(directional selection)that would cause a species to change.
But a study published in the National Academy of Sciences USA conflicts with this idea, showing that evolution constantly offers different qualities to those seemingly unchanging animals to improve short-term survival. In the long term, though, “all that evolution cancels out (相互抵消) and leads to no change,” says the study’s lead author, James Stroud.
Stroud and his colleagues studied lizards (蜥蜴); all relatively unchanged for 20 million years. The researchers caught members of lizard groups every six months for three years. They measured each lizard’s head size, leg length, mass and height, as well as the size of its sticky toes (脚趾头), noting which individuals survived. He saw clearer evidence of directional selection: some lizards with unique characteristics, such as stickier toes, survived better.
“The study offers a good explanation,” says Tadashi Fukami, an ecologist studying evolution at Stanford University. Many new qualities are evolving in the short term, but they don’t provide a crucial advantage over the long term. In other words, species staying unchanged may simply have found the best possible combination of qualities for lasting success in their environment. So what happens when the lizards’ environment changes more dramatically? To help answer this bigger question, Stroud is still making trips to visit the lizards.
8. Why does the author mention the “coelacanth fish” in paragraph 1?
A. To show the power of evolution. B. To add evidence to natural selection.
C. To give an example of unchanged species. D. To prove species’ extraordinary makeovers.
9. What’s the focus of paragraph 2?
A. Unsolved mysteries. B. A common belief.
C. A sharp contrast. D. Unique Characteristics.
10. How did Stroud conduct his research?
A. By analyzing lizard fossils. B. By tracking research objects.
C. By explaining stabilizing selection. D. By categorizing(分类) qualities of lizards.
11. What will Stroud probably do in the future?
A. Make trips to visit lizard experts. B. Summarize average features of lizards.
C. Reveal the best combinations of qualities. D. Examine lizards under extreme conditions.
D
Starting in the 1950s and 1960s, Japan began developing a reputation for its longevity (长寿). By the 1970s, the Japanese were the longest lived of any population in the world. Although genetic and cultural factors like diet certainly contributed to the long life span of the Japanese, it was the country’s kaihoken, or universal health care, that was largely responsible for improving quality of life and increasing the country’s life expectancy. In recognition of 50 years of kaihoken, the medical journal Lancet recently published a special issue exploring Japanese longevity. Unfortunately, it’s not all good news.
Even though Japan continues to have the highest life expectancy in the world, it is on track to be outpaced (超过) by other long-lived countries, like Sweden, Italy and Australia. Researchers believe that relatively high rates of tobacco use, changes in diet that have raised body-mass index, and the rising rate of suicide are contributing to Japan’s slowing declines in rates of adult mortality (死亡率). “If recent trends continue, other nations are likely to achieve lower rates of adult mortality than Japan,” said Professor Christopher Murray of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington, Seattle. He added that Japan’s universal health care system may not be quick enough to address mounting 21st-century health problems. “In an age of economic stagnation (停滞), political turmoil (混乱), aging populations and inadequate tobacco control, Japan does not seem to be effective in addressing its new set of health challenges. It will take more than universal access to a low-spending, high-volume health system to tackle these challenges. ”
Physical illness is not the only drag on the country’s life expectancy: more than 30,000 Japanese people take their own lives each year, perhaps the continuing aftereffect of the 1997 financial crisis. Still, the biggest health challenge facing the Japanese is related to lifestyle factors like cigarette smoking, obesity and uncontrolled blood pressure — all of which contribute to chronic (慢性的) health problems that tax (使负重担) the public health care system. That system is already strained (使不堪忍受) by the demands of an aging population and by injuries associated with recent natural disasters.
12. By the 1970s, Japan had the highest life expectancy mainly because the Japanese _______.
A. possessed exceptional genes for longevity
B. benefited from the universal health care system
C. were more careful with the quality of life
D. paid great attention to diets and physical health
13. What do we know about Japan’s life expectancy according to the second paragraph?
A. Some negative factors are affecting it. B. It has been outpaced by other countries.
C. Higher rates of tobacco use threaten it most. D. It always goes down with the financial crisis.
14. What does Christopher Murray think about Japan’s universal health care system?
A. It can help solve most health problems facing Japan in the future.
B. It should be completely replaced by a new set of system as soon as possible.
C. It may not be effective enough to deal with new challenges in this century.
D. It has to get more financial support from the government.
15. What’s the author’s attitude to Japan’s public health care system according to the last paragraph?
A. Optimistic. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Worried.

A 5. C 6. C 7. D

根据第二段中“Francis, 30, who has a reported net worth of $1.3 billion, joined Forbes’ billionaires list. His achievement is amazing: The list’s average age is 65 years old.(30岁的弗朗西斯净资产达13亿美元,登上了福布斯亿万富翁榜单。他的成就令人惊叹:榜单的平均年龄是65岁。)”可知,本·弗朗西斯在福布斯亿万富翁榜单上特别之处在于他的年龄。 故选A。
根据第三段中“Originally, Francis and co-founder Lewis Morgan launched Gymshark as a website selling fitness supplements. But after getting fed up with his ill-fitting clothes, Francis suggested pivoting the company.(最初,弗朗西斯和联合创始人刘易斯·摩根将Gymshark作为一个销售健身补品的网站推出。但在厌倦了自己不合身的衣服后,弗朗西斯建议对该公司进行pivoting。)”可知,由于厌倦了自己不合身的衣服,弗朗西斯建议对公司进行改变,因此pivoting在此处意为“改变”。故选C。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“On a whim (一时兴起), they decided to give popular fitness YouTubers free products.(他们一时兴起,决定给受欢迎的健身YouTube博主免费产品。)”以及“Some of those influencers went on to wear the apparel on their channels, launching Gymshark’s sales to 45,000 per day, up from just $450.(其中一些有影响力的人随后在他们的频道上穿上了这款服装,使Gymshark的日销售额从450美元飙升至45000美元。)”
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“Ben Francis didn’t become wealthy through a family inheritance (遗产). Instead, the CEO and co-founder of Gymshark used his earnings as a Pizza Hut delivery guy to buy a sewing machine and start his fitness apparel (服饰) company at 19.(本·弗朗西斯并不是通过家族继承而致富的。相反,这位Gymshark的首席执行官兼联合创始人在19岁时用他做必胜客外卖员的收入买了一台缝纫机,并创办了他的健身服装公司。)”可知,文章主要讲述了本·弗朗西斯从必胜客外卖员成长为亿万富翁并创立Gymshark公司的历程,因此D项“Francis: From a Pizza Hut delivery guy to a billionaire(弗朗西斯:从必胜客外卖员到亿万富翁)”最适合作文章标题。故选D。

C 9. B 10. B 11. D
根据第一段中的“But some creatures seem to be unchanged — in other words, escape natural selection. The coelacanth, a modern-day fish, looks almost the same as its 410-million-year-old fossils.(但有些生物似乎没有变化——换句话说,逃避了自然选择。腔棘鱼,一种现代鱼类,看起来几乎和它4.1亿年前的化石一样。)”可知,作者提到“腔棘鱼”为了举一个“未发生变化的物种”的例子。故选C。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Scientists have long wondered how these species (物种) do so. It has been assumed that natural selection keeps some species unchanged by selecting for average qualities(stabilizing selection) rather than selecting for more extreme qualities(directional selection)that would cause a species to change.(长期以来,科学家们一直想知道这些物种是如何做到这一点的。人们一直认为,自然选择通过选择平均特征(稳定选择)而不是选择会导致物种变化的更极端特征(定向选择)来使一些物种保持不变。)”可知,整段核心围绕这一“普遍认知”展开,因此段落重点是一种常见观点。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Stroud and his colleagues studied lizards (蜥蜴); all relatively unchanged for 20 million years. The researchers caught members of lizard groups every six months for three years. They measured each lizard’s head size, leg length, mass and height, as well as the size of its sticky toes (脚趾头), noting which individuals survived.(Stroud和他的同事研究了蜥蜴,这些蜥蜴在2000万年的时间里都相对没有变化。研究人员每六个月捕捉一次蜥蜴群体的成员,持续了三年。他们测量了每只蜥蜴的头部大小、腿长、体重和身高,以及它粘性脚趾的大小,并记录下哪些个体存活了下来。)”可知,Stroud是通过追踪研究对象来进行研究的。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“So what happens when the lizards’ environment changes more dramatically? To help answer this bigger question, Stroud is still making trips to visit the lizards.(那么,当蜥蜴的环境发生更剧烈的变化时会发生什么呢?为了帮助回答这个更大的问题,Stroud仍在前往拜访蜥蜴。)”可推知,Stroud未来可能会研究“环境剧烈变化(极端条件)下的蜥蜴”。故选D。

C. Supportive. D. Worried.
B 13. A 14. C 15. D

根据第二段中“Researchers believe that relatively high rates of tobacco use, changes in diet that have raised body-mass index, and the rising rate of suicide are contributing to Japan’s slowing declines in rates of adult mortality (死亡率).(研究人员认为,相对较高的烟草使用率、导致体重指数上升的饮食变化以及自杀率的上升,是导致日本成年人死亡率下降速度放缓的原因。)” 故选A。
根据第二段中“He added that Japan’s universal health care system may not be quick enough to address mounting 21st-century health problems.(他补充说,日本的全民医疗保健系统可能不足以迅速解决21世纪日益增多的健康问题。)”
根据最后一段中“Still, the biggest health challenge facing the Japanese is related to lifestyle factors like cigarette smoking, obesity and uncontrolled blood pressure — all of which contribute to chronic (慢性的) health problems that tax (使负重担) the public health care system. That system is already strained (使不堪忍受) by the demands of an aging population and by injuries associated with recent natural disasters.(尽管如此,日本人面临的最大健康挑战是与吸烟、肥胖和血压失控等生活方式因素有关——所有这些都导致了慢性健康问题,给公共卫生保健系统带来了负担。这个系统已经因为人口老龄化的需求和与最近自然灾害有关的伤害而不堪重负。)”可知,作者认为日本的公共卫生系统已经因为人口老龄化的需求和与最近自然灾害有关的伤害而不堪重负,由此可推知,作者对日本的公共卫生系统持担忧态度。故选D。
